This book gives a nice review of Savannah, from history, to where to stay, what do do, where to eat. It's very compact and will be easy for us to carry along on our trip next week to Savannah.

Savannah guide book 4 out of 5 stars.

Recently did a girls trip - the guide was very helpful. We planned lots of our trip prior to our arrival - restaurant suggestions were particularly helpful.

Nice overview.... 4 out of 5 stars.

I just returned from Savannah, and took this guide along. It fits very nicely into a back pocket or purse. It provided a great overview of the area with maps and good descriptions of many of the restaurants (including dividing them into price ranges).

The author couldn't have been more spot-on in describing one River St. bar (hint: they specialize in frozen drinks), and the description made my wife and I laugh out loud.

We followed one of the mapped out walking tours described in the book and it made for a wonderful Saturday afternoon. Given its portability, it can't cover every restaurant, bar or shop, but if you cross-reference what the author recommends against others' opinions- SouthernLiving.com, connectsavannah.com (Savannah's alternative news weekly), and TripAdvisor.com, you'll find many of the same restaurants listed, with similar descriptions.

Purchase the book in advance of making your lodging reservations, as there are a number of bed and breakfasts listed, as well as many hotels.

Yes, there are many references to the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," but given how much it's helped tourism in the area and how many people want to see the places described in that book, the author is just giving the people what they want. I enjoyed the references: I wanted a guide that covered those locations, but not one that focused solely on "The Book" (as it's known to many locals), and this guide provided a nice compromise.

The only drawback I found is that it doesn't list as many restaurants as I'd have liked, but again, given the space limitations, it couldn't. As you walk the streets, you'll stumble across some great little places on your own, and that's half the fun of "exploring" the town.

I consider the guide to be money well spent.

Invaluable 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I used this book for my second trip to Rome and it was absolutely invaluable. I wish that I had it for my first trip. I am a person who only cares about the Ancient Roman artifacts and this book literally has ever one listed by region that you have access to. If you decide to use this book bring along a highlighter and check off the sections that you complete, by the end of the day you will be amazed at how much you have seen. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Editorial Review:

Capital and showcase of the Roman Empire and the center of Christian Europe, the city of Rome is the largest archaeological site in the world. Here, Amanda Claridge presents an indispensable guide to all significant monuments in Rome dating from 800 BC to 600 AD. Included are such breathtaking structures as the Capitoline Hill, the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Mausoleums of Augustus and Hadrian, the Circus Maximus, and the Catacombs. Divided into twelve main archaeological areas in central Rome, and four in Greater Rome, this accessible guide provides a detailed overview of the sites, as well as historical reference tables listing archaeological periods, emperors, and principal surviving buildings. The introduction offers an assessment of Roman achievement along with its status as the capital of the Roman Empire, and explains Rome's survival as the world's most complex archaeological site.

Editorial Review:

Europe Beyond Your Means is a hilarious and satirical travel guide focused on understanding Parisian culture and enhancing the overall experience of visiting one of the world's most celebrated cities. Complete with travel suggestions, witty observations and relevant narratives of a nature that you won't find in typical travel literature, this book is guaranteed to augment any visit to Paris. By pointing out the endearing quirks of the French and the throngs of tourists who visit each year, Europe Beyond Your Means takes readers through the essential vacation steps of packing, arrival, necessary activities, cultural realizations and the difficult acceptance of having to eventually return home. This book is written for those who seek the most out of travel by trying to grasp the local culture and do not always feel accounted for by guides propagating the widely popular "ten-dollar-a-day" approach. In short, Europe Beyond Your Means is a must have companion piece for any erudite traveler to Paris who wants to laugh a little along the way.

"You can't be a beacon if your light don't shine." 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Lighthouses have fascinated me for over 60 years. Although never seriously smitten by these structures,I will always go out of my way to visit one whenever I get the chance. I grew up in Nova Scotia which seemed to have a lighthouse around every bend in the roads along the coast. They are always an excellent place to stop for a picnic lunch. I lived in New Jersey for a few years and again many lighthouses were nearby. My favorite was the Highlands Twin Lights in Navesink, which I visited often.I now live near Toronto, and my Birding trips often lead me to lighthouses which ring lakes Ontario,Erie and Huron.Other Birding trips along the East Coast ,Cape Hatteras,Southern Florida and California are continually providing new and exciting lighthouses. I have never made a list of all I've seen;but the total must be well over 100.I often thought it would be fun to photograph,or maybe even draw them as a hobby;but just never get around to getting serious about it.
So,when I come across a "Lighthouse" book,I am always interested;and there are many around.
This book is very different for several reasons. It is more than just a bunch of pretty pictures. As its title says,it is an encyclopedia. It covers many aspects of lighthouses, including, history, preservation, lots of technical information, examples from many countries, hints on photographing them as well as their present status.Of course, any one of those subjects could fill numerous books. This author alone, has written 14 books on lighthouses, so one can't expect everything about all lighthouses to be found in this one book
With that in mind,I have the following comments;
The quality of the paper, printing and overall construction of the book is top of the line.
The photographs range from mundane to excellent. This hit me as surprising. For instance Robert's photo of the Crisp Point Light on page 174 pales in comparison with his supurb photograph of the Dunkirk Light on page 177 .Again, we see the same thing with the Pigeon Point Light on page 222 and the Point Area Light on page 223.Then, we get those amazing photographs by Jean Guichard. You gotta wonder if he ever took a poor or average snapshot. Then again,I must admit ,the photo of the Peggy's Cove Light left me cold.Is this the best of the millions of photos taken of this super-famous lighthouse? Quite a few photos are attributed to magazines, the Coast Guard,Harbour Lights, etc.,which are very average.Again, there is the excellent photograph of the Port Bill Light,England ,courtesy Harbour Lights on page 235.The otherwise great shot of the Portland Head Light,on page 236, by Roberts, makes one wonder if it was Roberts or someone in the editing room who lost the top of the lighthouse.
I was also somewhat disappointed over the part on "Lighthouses around the world".There were none that I can recall from such coastline countries as Russia,China,India,Japan .

In spite of my comments, this book is an excellent resource for anyone with an interest in lighthouses. It would be a good companion to "Lighthouse Spotter's Guide" by Michael Rhein which I have already reviewed.

Editorial Review:

Packed with a wealth of fascinating facts and engrossing history, as well as full-colour and vintage photographs, this stunning volume contains everything a lighthouse lover could ever ask!"The Lighthouse Encyclopedia" is a one-stop resource offers a wealth of information on: the unique history of lighthouses; key figures and their contributions; over 150 lighthouses from around the world; and much more!

Don't buy for Texas 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I gave this four stars because most of the book is awesome and we've good experiences with the other additions. My wife and I love to travel to natural hot springs and we bought this after visiting most of the springs in the Northwest US.
We bought this edition just to get some idea of the springs in Texas. There is only one listed though which is pretty inaccurate. Nothing in the Austin area is included but the stuff in Hawaii was right on!

the classic hot spring book 4 out of 5 stars.

If you like hot springs, this is the book for you! The most information in the easiest format to follow. The directions are better than most other books like it, Really I haven't found a hot spring book that compares, this one has been around a long time and it's still the best. Also has been revised so its up to date.
