Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel Guide: Sicily (Dorling 4 out of 5 stars.
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

The Eyewitness Travel Guide for Sicily was my 10th in this series. We travel a lot and when we return home to look at our many photos that we have taken, the book is a tremendous help in indentifying these photos.

We also keep a daily diary when we travel and the concise wording in the guide helps add to the documentation and color of our journals.

I have used many guides in the past but the Eyewitness guide for Sicily and other locations is a must!

Editorial Review:

The guide that shows you what other travel books only tell you!

Sicily is the largest region in Italy, the largest island in the Mediterranean, and three different seas wash its shores. With more than 700 full-color photographs and easy-to-use 3-D aerial views, DK's Eyewitness Travel Guide: Sicily beautifully illustrates why this area is considered the heart of the Mediterranean. A special section on Palermo highlights the Museo Archeologico Regionale, the Palazzo Abatellis, the Piazza Marina, La Gancia, and more. The four sections on Sicily allow you to explore the 14th Century Chiesa Matrice in Erice, the Castello di Lombardia at Enna, Taormina on the Ionian Coast, and the old cities of Noto, Modica, Caltagirone, and Ragusa. Throughout the book there are wonderful photographic guides to the delectable cuisine, fine wines, and nightlife that make this an invaluable reference for anyone.

Amazing 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

These books tell you all about the story behind Disney World like Pirates Of the Caribbean's Never ending game of chess.

Fun read, but scratches the surface. 4 out of 5 stars.

I love to read about the designing and background to the evolution of the Parks & Pavillions. Each one gets 2-4 thin pages. I'm still looking for the book that gives the depth that Jason Surrell did for his "Pirates OTC" book.

Because I love Epcot 5 out of 5 stars.

If you love Walt Disney World and enjoy a little behind the scenes trivia, then this book is for you. Beautifully printed with pictures and lots of insights to how my favorite park has evolved. Fun stuff to pass the time with.

Editorial Review:

Second in this line of pocket-size paperbacks, this one answers the question: "What would it be like to walk through Epcot with an Imagineer by your side?" The Imagineering Field Guide to Epcot provides that experience: pointing out details and telling stories, back stories, and Imagineering insights never before heard, condensed into a portable, easily referenced park guide. These user-friendly, beautifully illustrated guides are innovative and entertaining books that will enrich the guests’ time at the happiest places on earth.

Editorial Review:

You can get to Europe, even travel around it, without help. But without a little pre-trip planning, you’ll make mistakes – wasting both time and money. This book won’t tell you where to go, but it will give you the tools to custom design the best possible journey for your time frame and budget. There are some things, such as rail passes, volunteer projects or cooking courses, that need to be booked in advance. This book will explain which things to plan for, which are best done on the fly, and how to do it. It will also help you pack what you need, so you don’t end up carrying around items you never use and give budget tricks and skills so you can save £5 - £15 per day with minimal effort (which can add up to £900 on a two-month trip). Essentially, this book contains the sort of information you could probably figure out on your own after about four or five years on the road. Just seems a little easier to get it in an hour or two.

Prepare for the adventure with The Rough Guide First-Time Europe.

Not really DC 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have been living in DC for the past 2 years and bought the LP as a gift for a friend. As a resident, let me tell you ... this guide falls MUCH below expectations. Published in 2001 Feb, it does not take into account any of the new security regulations, road closures, etc. Futhermore, the listings for restaurants, bars and clubs is not only prehistoric, but also very "old-school" ... none of the hip DC places are included. I would supplement this by checking Washington Post's website - they are much better. Cheers,

Great for your first, second and third time. Very thorough 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is my second summer living in Washington, DC during an internship and about my fifth time here. I have visited just about every major site that is accessible by public transportation, and some that aren't. I bought this book because it includes a blurb about the history of some of the major sites, sidetrips into Maryland and Virginia and lots of decent restaurants for a student on a budget. Perhaps it includes a bit too much info on traveling to DC (how to get there, visa info, etc. etc.) but it's a guidebook for the outsider primarily.

Editorial Review:

Includes detailed coverage of the US capital's greatest museums and monuments; the scoop on where to go after dark, from the dignified Kennedy Center to down-and-dirty punk rock dives; a range of accommodation options; special sections on architectural tours, black history and travelling with kids; and day excursions.

A great introduction to tourism 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This text provides a great overview of the tourism industry, from what tourism is to its organization to the theories that help fomulate such a diverse industry. This book should be studied by every student studying tourism.

Outstanding blend of theory and implementation 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book offers a fusion of theory and practical advice that is directly relevant to managers - an area where many current tourism texts fall short. It is both strategic and tactical, providing readers with a broad overview of the tourism environment as well as implementable ideas for improving business performance. I have read and enjoyed the original version by McIntosh, and the new insights from Ritchie and Goeldner add new depth to an already exceptional read.

Look around. You'll find no book in the field as thorough and well written as this.

I really like this book!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is very insightful on both, aspects of tourism and travel, as well as the financial affects that tourism can play on a country's economy. The authors seem to know what they're talking about and they're very good at relaying their knowledge to their readers in a concise way.

Great to carry on the go 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My wife and I love the Top 10 series. We always buy a Frommers or Rick Steves book for the trip's planning, but the Top 10 is a must for the trip itself. It'll fit in a pocket (a long one), and will provide quick and easy references to the most important sights, as well as maps and public transportation routes.

Take this with you! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is ideal in many ways. Read it before you travel - it reviews all of the highlights that you'll want to see while in Venice. It also explains and diagrams the public transportation system, a useful thing to know in advance of your arrival.
This book is a great size to take along while touring the Venice area. I referred to it often because navigating Venice can be a lot like trying to find your way around a labyrinth!
A nice feature of this book is that it cross-references topics in a variety of ways. If you want to see sights in a certain geographic area, you can look things up that way. However, if you have a special interest, like churches, art galleries, or whatever, the book is organized so that you can easily look up your specific interest and locate the sights you want to see throughout Venice. The book lists the entrance fees to the major attractions, as well as the days and times when they open and close.
Another nice feature of this book is the variety of historical information it contains on all manner of things Venetian - from gondolas to glass blowing. My husband and I used this book on our first trip to Venice and truly found it invaluable. I highly recommend it.

Route 66: Traveler's Guide and Roadside Companion 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The companion I did not find as helpful and did not use it on my trip down route 66. The book that this companion goes with was enough. I found the route 66 map from AAA a better companion with the book and is what I used on my trip.

Route 66 Essential 5 out of 5 stars.

Good to have with EZ66 Guide 4 out of 5 stars.

The Route 66: EZ66 Guide for Travelers is a must but the Collector's Edition: Roadside Companion, with the Corvette and Model "T" picture on the cover is Great to have too. Also nice to include Here It Is! The Route 66 Map Series to make the collecton complete!

A great book! 4 out of 5 stars.

I wasn't really very interested in Route 66 until my wife and I got interested in it during a trip to Arizona. We found this book and it became vital to finding sections of the old road and looking for certain landmarks along the way. When we moved from Texas we used this book to follow part of old Route 66 and we had a great time of it. Well worth the effort to find it!

Fascinating read 5 out of 5 stars.
52 of 53 people found this review helpful.

What makes this book stand out for me is the eyewitness reports, which are dotted throughout as you read this account of the D-Day landings. They bring alive the personal experiences of those who fought and help the reader appreciate the scarifices made.

The book is a nice mix of the history of this particular military campaign, and what the traveller to Normandy can hope to see today. This means the book is a good read for either the armchair military buff or the interested tourist.

Lots of photos and clear maps also add to this very good and highly readable book.

Editorial Review:

A new kind of guidebook. Each title in the series gives comprehensive information about: -- Major battles and battlefields -- Memorials, sites, cemeteries, and statues -- How to get there; what to see -- Contemporary eyewitness accounts -- Maps and then-and-now photographs The Traveller's Guides help us understand what it was like to have endured the ordeal of combat. Through their own words, we learn the feelings of those young men and women of many nationalities who fought and died. What were their private thoughts and fears? Their personal memories? Contemporary eyewitness accounts woven into the fabric of each title, give the series an immediacy and vividness that marks a new departure in guidebooks. This book covers the period from June to August 1944 when the Allies stormed ashore, fought their way through the brocage country of Normandy, and eventually broke out through the Avranches gap.
