Editorial Review:

The road across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela in the northwest was one of the three major Christian pilgrimage routes during the Middle Ages, leading pilgrims to the resting place of the Apostle St. James. Today, the system of trails and roads that made up the old pilgrimage route is the most popular long-distance trail in Europe, winding from the heights of the Pyrenees to the gently rolling fields and woods of Galicia. Hundreds of thousands of modern-day pilgrims, art lovers, historians, and adventurers retrace the road today, traveling through a stunningly varied landscape which contains some of the most extraordinary art and architecture in the western world. For any visitor, the Road to Santiago is a treasure trove of historical sites, rustic Spanish villages, churches and cathedrals, and religious art. To fully appreciate the riches of this unique route, look no further than The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago, a fascinating step-by-step guide to the cultural history of the Road for pilgrims, hikers, and armchair travelers alike. Organized geographically, the book covers aspects of the terrain, places of interest, history, artistic monuments, and each town and village's historical relationship to the pilgrimage. The authors have led five student treks along the Road, studying the art, architecture, and cultural sites of the pilgrimage road from southern France to Compostela. Their lectures, based on twenty-five years of pilgrimage scholarship and fieldwork, were the starting point for this handbook.

Explore New York 5 out of 5 stars.

Great guide to quirky shops, less well-known sports and odd bitss of history. A joy to read and to guide your explorations.

best kept secret 5 out of 5 stars.

I have an armload of NYC guides and this one is a delight to read. It is a love affair with the big apple and a great addition to a standard get around the city type book

Editorial Review:

This guide draws on the knowledge and familiarity of its resident author, naturally a New York expert. Highlights include the quintessential Village bookstore, vintage saloons, a cinematic tour of Brooklyn, a celebrity deli, and a Hasidic dairy bar above the city’s most famous diamond exchange. Also revealed are New York’s best-kept secrets, from a dockside fish restaurant where the famous rub elbows with fishermen, to the American Museum of Natural History as seen through the eyes of Holden Caulfield. Contributions from Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Cunningham, neurologist Oliver Sacks, journalist Anna Quindlen, folksinger Pete Seeger, and dozens of other luminaries are also included. Beautiful comprehensive maps keyed to entries, a subtle "nonguidebook" look, and two ribbon markers make this a unique traveler's companion.

I've hiked almost all fo these 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I've hiked almost all of these hikes using this book. About half are accurate, the other half, forget it. You cannot find the trailhead. I was pissed off alot of the time because I drove miles out of my way and couldn't find the trail. Also, this book is old and the topography has changed quite a bit. SOme of his strenous hikes are not, but usually it is the other way around. He needs to drive these roads again, some of the "well graded" dirt roads are horrible, rough and rocky. Don't even think of going to White Mountain Tanks near Phoenix, it is a zoo. The Picacho Peak site was great, though.

Original and Well Researched 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Let's face it, when it comes to hiking books, by-and-large they're not the most researched publications in the world. They tell you where to begin a hike, where to end, and a bit about what you'll see along the way, but almost nothing beyond the author's own observations.

Ruins Seldom Seen is the first hiking guide I've seen that is truly different. In addition to the usual practical information, the book provides information on the history of ancient Native American pueblos, cliff dwellings and rock arts sites. You learn which Indians occupied specific archaeological sites, when they were occupied, and what purpose the sites served (not all ruins were used for habitation). Clearly, the author has done his homework. If you don't believe it, just check the bibliography, which contains page after page of research papers written by professional archaeologists.

It's also refreshing to read a book about Indian ruins that isn't obsessed with "glamour" sites in the Four Corners area. Actually, the book does contain quite a few chapters on Anasazi cliff dwellings and rock art sites in New Mexico and southern Utah, but the emphasis is on ruins in Arizona that you've probably never even heard of let alone seen. I was amazed to learn there are cliff dwellings in the Sierra Ancha Mts., Superstition Mts. and other places in central Arizona that are every bit as fascinating as those further north. As for the many "hilltop pueblos" covered in the book, I was equally amazed to learn that so many of them even exist in the Grand Canyon state. Anyone who is not aware of such places has clearly not done THEIR homework.

Because of its originality wealth of historical information, I give the book Ruins Seldom Seen and enthusiastic "thumbs up."

    Editorial Review:

With more than 500 illustrations and numerous gallery floor plans, this invaluable guide is a mini-museum between two covers, offering visitors all they need to make the most of their visit to the world's largest art museum.

Encyclopedic in its scope and exhausting in its magnitude, the Louvre has vast collections ranging from the 6th century b.c. to the mid-19th century. Its impressive architecture goes back 800 years, to its origins as a fortress guarding medieval Paris. In its contemporary incarnation, recently reconfigured and rebaptized "The Grand Louvre," it spreads over four levels and boasts more than 30,000 works of art; its galleries, shops, and offices occupy some 1.6 million square feet, of which some 645,600 are dedicated to exhibitions.

Such daunting dimensions can make the museum feel like an endless labyrinth to uninitiated visitors. For them, The Pocket Louvre is a unique and essential resource, including: A handy user's guide with information about access to the museum and its many services, from cafs to a post office to shops. Suggested itineraries for visits of varying lengths and for visitors with differing interests. A history of the Louvre and its architecture. A history of the collections. An illustrated catalog of 500 masterpieces, all in color, with useful brief commentaries.

    Editorial Review:

The best-selling Most Beautiful Villages series now takes colorful, romantic, vibrant Spain as its subject. Traditional architecture and dramatic natural settings place these villages among the most unspoiled and appealing in Europe. Pretty Romanesque churches dominate mountain communities in the Asturias and the Pyrenees; walled hamlets rise from the high plains of Castilla; literary and artistic associations enrich the beautiful remains of Moorish Andalucía.

More than thirty village gems are featured here. From Galicia to the Basque country in the north lie picturesque fishing villages. Patient exploration in the heart of the country reveals such delights as Pedraza's arcaded square seen against a backdrop of snowcapped mountains, or La Guardia's mighty defensive walls towering above the vineyards of Rioja. In the east, the whitewashed houses of coastal Cadaqués have become famous as an artists' colony, while El Palmar is renowned for its paella. And in the villages of Andalucía, like Medina Sidonia, the traces of Moorish civilization can be found.

The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain is completed by special sections on local culinary delights, as well as listings of places to stay and eat and sights to visit. 266 color illustrations.

Much more than a travel guide 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 26 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the most useful guides I've ever read. Virginia was host to nearly 1/3rd of all Civil War engagements, and this guide covers them all like a mini-history of the war. Unlike travel books that are organized geographically, this guide organizes them chronologically. Each campaign is prefaced by a detailed overview, followed by concise (from 1 to 4 pages, depending on the battle's importance) but engrossing descriptions of the individual engagements. These descriptions make this a great book to browse through when you're not in the car. Most sites' summaries touch on their condition--whether they're threatened by development (as too many are) and whether they're in private hands or protected by the park service.

But the maps are where this book really stands out. Each battle features a very clear map designating army positions and historical roads, as well as historical markers (the author also wrote the /A Guidebook to Virginia's Historical Markers/), parking, and visitors' centers. Best of all, though, many battles are illustrated with paintings or photographs of the sites, and the point-of-view of these pictures is marked on each map!

Colonial Mexico 2nd edition 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I think this is an excellent book. I was delighted to find a guidebook that focuses on such an under appreciated topic. It is well researched and well writen. It describes many of the major colonial towns in central and southern Mexico. It provides a brief history for each town, describes the significant buildings, as well as near bye attractions. The maps are accurate and easy to read. It will be one of the few guide books that I bring on my next trip to Mexico.

A great and informative book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Ok, go and buy this book. I am saying this because it is indeed a good read on Mexico and its historic towns and not just because this author devotes 16 pages to my adopted town of Guanajuato!

    Doug Bower
Author: THE PLAIN TRUTH ABOUT LIVING IN MEXICO

    Editorial Review:

The intriguing colonial heritage of Mexico is profiled in this detailed and informative guide. Chicki Mallan leads readers through cities such as San Miguel de Allende, Merida, and Veracruz, revealing 500-year-old churches, Spanish haciendas, and imposing palaces in styles ranging from neoclassical to Mudejar. She also emphasizes distinctive areas to shop in each city. Past and present are celebrated with coverage of festivals, indigenous arts and crafts, and photos taken by Oz Mallan.

Engrossing, hilarious (sometimes) human nature book 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 16 people found this review helpful.

You wouldn't think of museums as providing the stuff for comedians, but I can see not enough people know about what actually goes on in these collosal monuments to human curiosity!
I came to this book by way of mystery writers (Preston and Child--Relic and Fairchild---The Bone Vault). So thanks guys for recommending this nonfiction read! Almost as quickly read as my mysteries.

The need for so many people to collect items, animals and even humans (would someone please stomp on Admiral Peary's grave for a while)! Geez. You wouldn't think people would be so obtuse as to not realize that living, breathing human beings do not belong in museums as specimens of a tribe or culture we do not know. But obviously the wealthy who often did the collecting, or those 'explorers' who put fame and glory above compassion had a problem with understanding basic human rights. And yes, if tribes ask for their ancestors back, the bones should be returned and buried. How would we all feel if someone went and dug up our grandparents and put their skeletons on display without concern for our need to respect them? You don't see museum guys going to dig up white American or English cemetary plots, do you?

Okay, off the soapbox. A fun read, well-written, well-researched. Preston went on to write several books using the museums as a somewhat creepy place, and frankly after reading this and other books, I don't think I'd want to be locked in the American Museum of Natural History. Pretty sure I'd freak out...too much past with too many ghosts attached to it. Besides, this place sounds like a mausoleum. Having just returned from visiting the Mutter Medical Museum in Philly with its assortment of bones, oddly shaped fetuses and a variety of other things like hands floating in some type of suspension fluid showing small pox at its worse...yikes, I don't know how much of this stuff I could take, and I took medical classes in the Morgue!

The history of the museum is fascinating...the fact that we are able to see so little of this makes me yearn to do exploring down in the 'tombs' and hallways in the presence of company and full daylight, thank you.

Dinosaurs in the Attic is a chronicle of the expeditions, discoveries, and scientists behind the greatest natural history collection every assembled. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have used the reviews while on several different trips, to Las Vegas, San Diego, and in Southern California. A lot of this info could not be found elsewhere!

A word of advice to lucky purchasers of this book however--do double check, call ahead, and make sure your destination still exists! I have made several blunders as well assuming that a place was open for lunch when many are nightspots only.

That said, a great guide (and check out the inside of the Hanalei/Red Lion Hotel in San Diego--the bartenders make a mean scorpion in a nifty souvenier bowl!!)

    Editorial Review:

This completely updated and expanded guide to tiki culture in North America and abroad lists, describes, and reviews every known tiki bar, Polynesian restaurant, and other site of interest to fans of “Polynesian Pop.” From tiki godfathers such as Edgar Leeteg and Don the Beachcomber to contemporary tiki artists like Shag and Bosko, this resource covers all things tiki in prose that is witty, entertaining, and essential for anyone who has ever stepped up to a bar, glanced up at the pufferfish hanging from the ceiling, and ordered a Singapore Sling. An expanded offering of recipes for classic cocktails, a larger glossary of tiki terms, and more resources for buying tiki goods and artifacts are included in this revised edition. Reminiscences of famous points of interest that have closed are provided for the completist, for historical perspective, and for those seeking information on the current status of a favorite tiki site.
