Editorial Review:

Finding all the fascinating scientific sites to visit throughout America can be a daunting task. This guidebook does all the work for you. The first in a series of travel books that will celebrate science and technology in America, Astronomy and Space Exploration describes astronomy and space-related museums and attractions that conventional travel guides tend to ignore. So, gas up the car, grab some snacks for the road, and get started on the voyage. Written in clear, easy-to-read language, Astronomy and Space Exploration lists more than 50 of the most important and intriguing astronomical and space-related sites in the United States. The book encompasses both popular and obscure places of interest, all of which are open to the public. Grouping the attractions by theme such as Native American astronomy, optical and radio telescopes, NASA and space exploration, and space rocks Duane S. Nickell provides a scientific and historical overview of each theme followed by detailed descriptions of the related sites within that theme. With over 40 illustrations, the book gives readers a visual understanding of what they will experience at most of the sites. For those readers who want to use the book as a trip planner, Nickell also includes a state-by-state listing of the attractions and identifies must-see exhibits at many of the space museums featured. Travelers and armchair tourists alike will be entertained by the illustrations and scientific descriptions of these out of this world attractions.

Beautifully presented if obviously biased 3 out of 5 stars.
23 of 36 people found this review helpful.

DK produces the most arguably beautiful travel books currently available. The maps, graphics, architectural renderings, photographs and overall layout are beyond reproach and most appealing and informative. Why not five stars? I'm not sure where the blame lies, be it with the writers or editors, but this guide is deeply flawed in its biased content. Though not openly sympathetic to the island's communist government, it is nevertheless more than obvious that the person(s) responsible, are more than a little enamored with that country's socio-political ideology. In describing pre-revolutionary Cuba, the guide takes a cynical stance, perpetuating the myth that Cuba was nothing more than an American subsidized den of iniquity, populated by gangsters, prostitutes, gamblers and grown ineffective with rampant corruption and illiteracy. Though all these things were certainly true, the book fails to provide a balanced perspective of that period in the country's history and that's where its inherent failure lies. The Cuban revolution, though tragic, horrible and seemingly endless, is a part of World history in general and Cuban history in particular, and, therefore, should not be ignored, but by the same token it need not be given such idolatry treatment in a travel guide, which, in my opinion, should be an unbiased reference tool, meant to educate the traveler on a country, its history and people in a clear, concise and informative manner, free of personal prejudices and/or beliefs. This guide is filled with non-stop descriptions of revolutionary monuments, sites, people, and history. That in and of itself would be fine if weren't done so with such obvious appreciation for all that it represents. In describing Che, the author writes "Though Che suffered from asthma, he had an iron will, loved books as well as sports, and had a great spirit of sacrifice, he could appreciate beauty and was a perfectionist but had a sense of humour. He was a man of action who also found time to meditate on reality and write." One would think the author was describing Robin Williams and not one of the 20th century's most controversial figures. Though he certainly may have been all the things described in the book, it doesn't give a complete and accurate portrayal of the man. That was one example, but the book is plagued with socialist fawning that ultimately proves to be an ineffectual tool. Though the author is free to appreciate, love, praise, support, condemn, ridicule whatever he/she may choose, be it political, religious, artistic, etc. or a combination thereof, it should not be done through a travel guide. It's a genuine shame because, otherwise, from an aesthetic perspective, there's just nothing out there that even comes close.

Incomplete and heavy 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is the first book that I have read from back to front. I hiked the CT from Durango to Denver in 32 days from mid-August to Mid-September 2005 and this book was my main guide. I wanted to give this book 2 stars only, but because it actually brought me all the way, I decided on 3. What is the reason for this harsh judgement?

The reason is not, that I had to read it backwards! - Some people on the trail found it confusing to read it the wrong way, but I found the description of the trail adequate in most places. I got lost a few times when missing a junction, but this happened maybe once a week and is part of the game. In general the trail is extremely well marked. - No, I find the data in this book incomplete. Everything and more (except for scetches of trail towns) you will find in the tiny and cheap Trailside Databook from the same publisher. My my main complaints are, that this book
* has very little concrete information about water sources (!) and campsites.
* poor maps. The maps included are US Forest Service maps that show no elevation data (unlike USSGS topo maps). This makes it near impossible to figure out any geographic features. This also means you probably want to buy additional maps. This could easily cost you 100 bucks! Other guide books (PCT) include usable maps.
* has very coarse elevation profiles. Usually only 4 to 6 data points are given for each of the 28 segments. You might actually be walking uphill, while the elevation profile points down! In a time of computer generated elevation profiles this is inexcusable. (Even the displays at segment trailheads show _much_ better profiles.)
* gives elevation "gain" for each segment but no "loss" information. This is important if you have a bad hip or hike the "wrong" direction where "down" and "up" switch places.

The book is printed on very glossy, heavy paper. This means beautiful pictures are included. But it also means that most hiker tear out pages as they go to save weight. The paper does not burn well and can't be used as a fire starter at all.

On the positive side the book tries to teach you a little bit about the history of each of the 28 segments (usually one page). As I went on I really enjoyed reading them and got a feeling for the history (mostly mining and railroads).

The book is adequate as a guide. My recommendation for those planing a thru-hike: get the trailside data book from the same publisher (better get 2 copies, as I lost mine early and it was impossible to replace on the trail) and a set of good topo maps. You might get away without maps, as the trail is very well marked, but having them provides an additional layer of safety and a lot of interesting information.

Unfortunately worthless 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is full of not-enough information to bring on a trip and therefore has precious little extra room for you to do your own writing. The maps are such poor quality that you'll undoubtedly have a better one, and all the extra information is just not worth the weight. Better to bring a blank book along with a good map or guide book. Could be very good for kids if parents are already informed.

African Safari Journal 5 out of 5 stars.

This journal was wonderful!!!! It had all the information that I needed about the animals, had maps of the areas, translations for the various languages, space to enter all my thoughts, information about the people who were on safari with us, our personal information - everything!!! I'll cherish it forever!

Informative! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have been to Kenya three times and would not leave home without this book! Its a wonderful way to remember what you saw and what you need to take.

The only book an explorer of Africa needs to pack is really five books in one: wildlife guide, trip organizer, phrase book, diary, and map directory.

Engrossing, hilarious (sometimes) human nature book 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 16 people found this review helpful.

You wouldn't think of museums as providing the stuff for comedians, but I can see not enough people know about what actually goes on in these collosal monuments to human curiosity!
I came to this book by way of mystery writers (Preston and Child--Relic and Fairchild---The Bone Vault). So thanks guys for recommending this nonfiction read! Almost as quickly read as my mysteries.

The need for so many people to collect items, animals and even humans (would someone please stomp on Admiral Peary's grave for a while)! Geez. You wouldn't think people would be so obtuse as to not realize that living, breathing human beings do not belong in museums as specimens of a tribe or culture we do not know. But obviously the wealthy who often did the collecting, or those 'explorers' who put fame and glory above compassion had a problem with understanding basic human rights. And yes, if tribes ask for their ancestors back, the bones should be returned and buried. How would we all feel if someone went and dug up our grandparents and put their skeletons on display without concern for our need to respect them? You don't see museum guys going to dig up white American or English cemetary plots, do you?

Okay, off the soapbox. A fun read, well-written, well-researched. Preston went on to write several books using the museums as a somewhat creepy place, and frankly after reading this and other books, I don't think I'd want to be locked in the American Museum of Natural History. Pretty sure I'd freak out...too much past with too many ghosts attached to it. Besides, this place sounds like a mausoleum. Having just returned from visiting the Mutter Medical Museum in Philly with its assortment of bones, oddly shaped fetuses and a variety of other things like hands floating in some type of suspension fluid showing small pox at its worse...yikes, I don't know how much of this stuff I could take, and I took medical classes in the Morgue!

The history of the museum is fascinating...the fact that we are able to see so little of this makes me yearn to do exploring down in the 'tombs' and hallways in the presence of company and full daylight, thank you.

Streetwise San Diego Map - Laminated City Center Street Map of San Diego, California - Folding pocket size travel map with trolley lines & stations

This map covers the following areas:
Main San Diego Map 1:18,000
San Diego Area Map 1:55,000
Old Town Map 1:23,000
La Jolla Map 1:28,000

Welcome to San Diego, the second largest city in California. Mexico, the Pacific Ocean, the Anza-Borrego Desert and the Laguna Mountains surround San Diego and are all contributing factors to the ideal climate. With seventy miles of beaches, the Gaslight District, Sea World Adventure, LEGOLAND, La Jolla shopping and the San Diego Zoo; whatever your pleasure, San Diego is the ultimate playground for the whole family. To help get the most out of your visit, carry the STREETWISE® map of San Diego.

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Yes, the zoo is a must see. Over 4,000 animals, living in habitats that rival Mother Nature herself, create one of the best animal experiences you’ll ever find. The Panda bears, on loan from China, are a big draw, but there is so much to see here that even if you miss these black and white fluff balls your day will be full.

Balboa Park, where the zoo is located, has many other attractions you’ll want to include the Spanish Village Arts Center-35 art studios in a recreated Spanish town square, the Timken Museum-a jewel of a small museum with European Old Masters' paintings, House of Pacific Relations historic cottages host cultural festivals, San Diego Aerospace Museum take a simulated walk in space, The Old Globe and Junior Theatre-offering performances for all ages throughout, Hall of Champions Sports Museum-from Ted Williams to Tony Hawk, the San Diego Museum of Art-the regions oldest and largest, the Museum of Man-devoted to anthropology (more exciting than it sounds) and the Japanese Friendship Garden. That’s just a partial list. There’s also Butterfly rides, a carousel, lawn bowling, a miniature railroad you can ride and, of course, the Spreckles Organ Pavilion. Walk along the Prado Walkway around the Casa del Prado and admire the Spanish Colonial architecture. These buildings were part of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition celebrating the completion of the Panama Canal.

After Balboa Park, it’s nice to take the scenic drive marked by blue and yellow signs with a white seagull. This route will take you through a majority of the sites of San Diego and is a pleasant way to spend three or more hours touring the area. Or you can hop on the Blue line trolley and take a trip to Tijuana. The 45 minute trolley ride takes you right to the border crossing at San Ysidro, just across the border from Tijunana. Once you pass customs you can pick up the Border Shuttle (look for the big blue busses) and for $1.00 ride into the center of town. Don’t forget your passport if you plan to visit Mexico.

The area inset on the STREETWISE® San Diego Map will navigate you in and around the city region to places like San Diego International Airport, Pacific Beach, Coronado Island, Point Loma, La Jolla, and the University of California at San Diego. You’ll also find enlarged inset maps featuring Old Town and a detailed street map of La Jolla. A complete index of streets, hotels, points of interest, shopping, education, culture, transportation and parks is clearly listed on the map.

Our pocket size map of San Diego is laminated for durability and accordion folding for effortless use. I used the other book ( fee mining in the west ) on my last vacation. The books in this series are great. I love them. If you like to travel around and collect neat looking rocks, gems and minerals like we do, get these books ! The books give such good directions that I was able to locate a mine that had been closed due to the owners death. All evidence of the mine was removed but we still found it from the books great directions. Buy these books they are great !

Editorial Review:

Much more than a fee mining guide, this unique book is a treasure trove of interesting sites to see and things to do related to rocks & minerals, gemstones, crystals, fossils, gold and other treasures. Whether you are an experienced rockhound or prospector, or a family on vacation, you'll find fun, adventure and maybe precious gems, gold or other hidden treasures of man or nature. Organized by state, 270 sites are listed in 31 states throughout the northeast, southeast, and mid-west, including 75 fee digging sites, museums, cave and cavern adventures, tours and historic and natural points of interest.
