Wonderful Wizard is Wonderful 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book as a birthday present for my Dorothy-obsessed 3-year old and she LOVES it. I was a little worried that it would be seriously abridged when I read that it only had 16 pages, but no need to fear. Within each page is a chapter of the book so there is plenty of story. It takes almost an hour to read it to her but it is well-worth it.

Sabuda Does It Again 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Robert Sabuda is a master of the pop-up book and this is the second one I purchased of an adaptation of a famous children's story, and once again it does not dissapoint.

A good telling of the story combined with some incredible pop-ups, the one of the Emerald City makes you feel like you are in the story.

If you are a collector or have children you must get at least one of these books. Make sure you read it with the younger ones to show how books should be handled properly, though make sure they really understand before letting them use the book on their own.

Editorial Review:

Robert Sabuda has created a resplendent pop-up version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original publication. This glorious edition is told in a shorter version of L. Frank Baum's original text, with artwork in the style of W. W. Denslow. With sparkling touches of colored foil and Emerald City eyeglasses, this classic tale is certain to find an honored place on the family bookshelf.

Puppy Love with a Twist! A Top 20 Book of the Year! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Animals don't get much more emotional than Pigeon; this bird makes manipulation fun! He (Pigeon could be a she, but I'll use the male pronoun here) postures, poses, plays coy, makes these goo-goo eyes at you, and says -- unknowingly--the most preposterous things, all because he REALLY wants a puppy.

Mo Willems, the master of simplicity, conveys all the avian non-verbals with eyeball placement, stance, two wings (acting as arms) and tiny legs, eyelids, and just a few lines to suggest motion. With those simple elements, Willems creates an absolutely adorable bird, in part I suspect because his still growing body, and the transparency of emotion reminds us of our own youngsters.

Pigeon's verbal tactics complement his physical melodramatics. Pigeon vacillates between coy, indirect pleas, and foot-stomping demands, switching from one emotion to another in split seconds! Pigeon directly address the reader, emotionally involving the audience in an intimate, just-between-you-and-me tone. For example, you or your youngster may be quite familiar with THE PROMISE:
"Oh, don't worry. I'll take care of it. I promise I'll water it once a month."

Another favorite is THE GUILT TRIP:
"Oh... I get it. You don't want me to be happy, do you?" You don't want me to take a piggy back ride on my puppy...!"

Pigeon's pleas are funny because his bargaining is so obvious, his facts so wrong, his emotions so labile, and the purity of his expression so fresh and loveable. Willems captures all of this in a style that follows Poe's dictum that every element in a story should be there for a reason. The story has a socko surprise ending: The puppy finally arrives, however, Pigeon discovers it's a BIG dog, and he is aghast! As fast as you can say "...That wet nose! The slobber! The claws!," pigeon changes his mind--now he's all sincerely lovelorn (hearts surround his words) over getting a walrus! The endpapers show a crate addressed to "The Pigeon" containing "ONE WALRUS."

Perhaps like no one else working in kids' picture books, Willems little gems speak directly to small kids, and bring a twinkle of recognition to adults. They're clever, knowing, and extremely funny. By the way, Willems' extraordinary talent has not gone unnoticed, his books have won two Caldecott honors, and his writing for "Sesame Street" earned him six Emmys. He's an all-time favorite, and your young toddler to kindergarten-age kid will love any and all of Willems' work. You will too!

Editorial Review:

He really, really, REALLY wants one. He'll take really good care of it! What's the matter--don't you want him to be happy?

The latest book in the best-selling Pigeon series is the funniest one yet.

clever and a nice addition to Christmas tales 4 out of 5 stars.

I used to teach 5th grade and first read this to my class when it came out as a newspaper feature. I purchased 4 copies this season to share with young family members.

Book is Blessing for A Bad Day 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a book about miracles and perspective. 'You don't always get what you want, but you get what you need,' a wise songwriter once wrote. This book is the perfect gift for anyone who feels that things NEVER turn out right for them. Like me. I bought this book for myself because I love Lemony Snicket. I've already read it several times and I laugh in exactly the same spots every time. I had a horrible day today -- NOTHING went right -- and I came home and read this book. Perspective changed. Mood improved. Try it. You'll love it.

Fun for parents and kids 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I love this book - it's very clever and very funny, yet still heartwarming with a very positive message. I thought the Lemony Snicket books were dark, and while this has a little darkness in it, it's much more optimistic then I expected. This isn't for very young children (it's bit verbose for my 3 year old), but it's now my 5 year old's favorite. Good plot twists and great language for a kids book.

Editorial Review:

This is a story about a lump of coal who can think, talk, and move itself around.

Is there a more charming holiday tale to behold? Probably, but Lemony Snicket has not written one.

A story to pass down! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My mother bought this story for me in 1995. I used it originally for a story telling speech tournament which I won first place for. She then kept the book until I had my own daughter 2 years ago. My daughter LOVES this book, I'm thinking if I should have it laminated. It is her "princess book". She loves this book so much she is going to be a dragon for halloween! (interesting that she chose to be a dragon and not a princess) We rotate this book with about 5 other Robert Munsch books she adores!

Paper Bag Princess 4 out of 5 stars.

Fabulous and empowering in a not so subtle way...perfect for little girls. Only negative, lacked story development.

A must for any girl's library 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The Paper Bag Princess, by Robert Munsch, is a must for any girl's library. On the first page, we are introduced to Elizabeth, a princess who lives in a castle with expensive princess clothes, who is going to marry a prince named Ronald. Then comes the shocker on the next page: "Unfortunately, a dragon smashed her castle, burned all of her clothes with his fiery breath, and carried off Prince Ronald."

Princess Elizabeth has to wear a paper bag as she goes off to rescue her prince. For most of the book, she uses her brain to outwit the dragon and rescue Ronald. But instead of thanking his rescuer, he haughtily scolds her for her unkempt appearance and tells her to come back "when you are dressed like a real princess."

Elizabeth realizes that he may look like a prince, but he doesn't have the heart of one, and the book concludes with a picture of her skipping off happily into the sunset with the line, "They didn't get married after all." I love Munsch for planting the seed with little girls that they should never settle for a man who isn't good enough for them. Yeah!

Editorial Review:

The Princess Elizabeth is slated to marry Prince Ronald when a dragon attacksthe castle and kidnaps Ronald. In resourceful and humorous fashion, Elizabethfinds the dragon, outsmarts him, and rescues Ronald--who is less than pleasedat her un-princess-like appearance. Full color.

Astonishingly Good 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Reading the first book was like opening Russian nesting dolls. Each revelation leads to yet another amazing revelation. I read the first book without any knowledge of what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised by this irresistable story. The mystery of Octavian and his mother's situation was revealed in such a compelling manner that one cannot hope to feel anything but compassion and wonderment. I can't wait to read book 2.

Editorial Review:

Volume II of the National Book Award Winner and NEW YORK TIMES bestseller — a stunning resolution to the epic tale that "fascinates, appalls,
condemns, and enthralls."

Fearing a death sentence, Octavian and his tutor, Dr. Trefusis, escape through rising tides and pouring rain to find shelter in British-occupied Boston. Sundered from all he knows — the College of Lucidity, the rebel cause — Octavian hopes to find safe harbor. Instead, he is soon to learn of Lord Dunmore's proclamation offering freedom to slaves who join the counterrevolutionary forces.

In Volume II of his unparalleled masterwork, M. T. Anderson recounts Octavian's experiences as the Revolutionary War explodes around him, thrusting him into intense battles and tantalizing him with elusive visions of liberty. Ultimately, this astonishing narrative escalates to a startling, deeply satisfying climax, while reexamining our national origins in a singularly provocative light.

Reaganomics for Kids! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This story revolves around a mouse who demands ever-increasing amounts of consumer items from an ever-increasingly exasperated boy. Cute pictures hide a terrible message of selfishness and class warfare boiling beneath American society. The whole book devolves into a crude political cartoon, where the boy symbolizes an innocent and hard-working tax payer while the mouse typifies a vile depiction of how the wealthy (or at least those who perceive themselves as wealthy) view the poor and needy. While the boy gives more and more to the mouse the mouse in turn asks more and more of the boy. It paints the situation as unjust and the mouse having little reason to ask for these handouts.

Terrible book. Don't read it to your kids.

perfect gift for kids 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

These books were recommended to me by my daughter, the mother of our 1-1/2 year old grandson. He has several books by Boynton and loves to sit and listen to them often. They are the perfect length for his age.

Editorial Review:

What a perfect gift. Perfect for baby showers. Irresistible for a newborn, or for a one-, two-, even a three-year-old’s birthday. Ideal as a set that grandparents, aunts and uncles, in-laws, and close personal friends of the baby (babies have close personal friends?) will find particularly perfect to give. Housed in a bold, happy slipcase are three bestselling Boynton on Board books: Barnyard Dance!, Oh My Oh My Oh My Dinosaurs!, and Pajama Time!

It’s the wonderfulest introduction to the world of Boynton—square-dancing pigs and sheep, wide-eyed dinosaurs, and a sleepy, PJ-clad menagerie. The books, which in their chunkiness present a deliciously tactile handful for little readers, sport die-cut covers that reveal a glimpse of the fun inside. And what fun it is! Big, bold, humorous, rhyming verses, and those ever-whimsical illustrations that have made Sandra Boynton one of America’s best-loved artists. A box of pure read-aloud pleasure.

Shockingly poor quality paperback books 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Ramona is one of my favorite characters in children's literature, so I sent this collection to my niece for her birthday.

When I arrived at my brother's house, and saw the poor quality of the books I was shocked. I have never given a child a book before that was made to fall apart after one reading.

Good-bye to my fantasy of her reading it over and over or giving it to a friend!

We love Ramona! 5 out of 5 stars.

These books are great. We got them for a co-worker who recently got a bad haircut that looked like Ramona. She remembered the books from when she was a kid. She loved reading them and feeling like a kid again. They arrived on time and and in good condition. Thanks.

As Wonderful as I Remembered 5 out of 5 stars.

I was so happy to find a Ramona collection to share something of my childhood with my girls. The books are every bit as wonderful as I remembered, even though they have different pictures now. Ramona is completely timeless and just as fun, mischievous and misunderstood as ever. My kids are now looking forward to reading the Ralph books so this has been great to get them more into reading.
