A wonderful book 4 out of 5 stars.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl is about Charlie, a generous boy whose family is very poor. Charlie hopes to win admission to Wonka's fabulous chocolate factory which is finally open to five people. I enjoy how Roald Dahl describes imaginary characters and the interesting machines in the factory. At the factory, Charlie meets four other children who have one thing in common: they all represent naughty children in one way or another. The other children can be described as sassy or obsessed or bulging or lazy. They are all extremely unhelpful, and they expect other people to do all the work for them. Charlie is different. He is helpful, and he works hard to make his family happy. I think that there should be a scene that shows Charlie making a good choice in the factory instead of just standing there watching other kids make bad choices. I think that the book is good for readers in second to seventh grades because it is a complicated story with exciting and unpredictable characters. I liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory so much that I chose to read the sequel!

Editorial Review:

The gates of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory are opening at last . . . and only five children will be allowed inside.

Disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.

I was hoping to get a nice factual primer on American History when I ordered this book. What I got was a writer projecting his political bias on as many topics as possible. I'm kind of a hybrid Rebuplican/Democrat so I'm far from a right winger. But the left wing slant of this book is obvious and obtrusive from the get go. If this guy wants to impose his political beliefs on others, he should try fiction because history is too important to become an interpretive exercise.

I couldn't recommend this author less.

Editorial Review:

Who really discovered America? What was "the shot heard 'round the world"? Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: Did he or didn't he?

From the arrival of Columbus through the bizarre election of 2000 and beyond, Davis carries readers on a rollicking ride through more than 500 years of American history. In this updated edition of the classic anti-textbook, he debunks, recounts, and serves up the real story behind the myths and fallacies of American history.

This book is a wonderful adaptation of the famous tale.

It is art as much as a book, and like others I would recommend reading this book to younger readers (as oppossed to letting them handle it)

I have always loved pop up books since I was a child, and this one is one of the best.

A Wondrous Pop-Up Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a truly excellent version of Lewis Carroll's classic. The 7 two page spreads are gorgeous. The first spread contains Alice reading, the White Rabbit, and the tree that the White Rabbit is walking away from; its dimensions are 11 inches wide and tall, and 8 inches deep. The full text is contained in a mini-book embellishment with each spread. These mini-books are astonishing! They're very colorful with additional pop-ups. This is simply a stupendous book that I recommend highly! Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: A Pop-up Adaptation

Editorial Review:

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is Robert Sabuda's most amazing creation ever, featuring stunning pop-ups illustrated in John Tenniel's classic style. The text is faithful to Lewis Carroll's original story, and special effects like a Victorian peep show, multifaceted foil, and tactile elements make this a pop-up to read and admire again and again.

read it to kids - edition is for grownups, but the stories are for everyone! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This volume gathers Curious George and the six original books in the series:

1) Curious George
2) ...Takes a Job
3) ...Rides a Bike
4) ...Gets a Medal
5) ...Flies a Kite
6) ...Learns the Alphabet
7) ...Goes to the Hospital

I was given this as a nostalgic birthday gift a few years ago and was greatly charmed. I don't even think I read all of those when I was little, so it was sweet to see them again after so many years. Curious George is the story of the "man in the yellow hat" who has brought back an inquisitive and mischievous monkey, Curious George. The stories usually involve a jungle-raised monkey getting into all kinds of trouble in the city, but all ends well and George comes home safely in the end - and no one really can stay mad at him.

This book is a handsome edition with a good binding and high quality printing. (The colors look good, etc.) I don't really like the glossy pages for book that will be loved to pieces by a child, but if you want this for a gift edition, it's perfect. I suggest having this as something you would read to a child, since it's kind of big and you wouldn't want to drop it on a grown-up foot.

Editorial Review:

"This is George. He lived in Africa. He was a good little monkey, and always very curious." With these words, H. A. and Margret Rey introduced the world to Curious George in 1941, and the world has loved him ever since. The tales of this cheerful and resilient little hero have kept generations of readers enthralled and entertained. Now, in recognition of the sixtieth anniversary of his debut, Houghton Mifflin proudly presents a special edition of George"s best-loved adventures.

With an introduction by critic Leonard Marcus, a retrospective note by publisher Anita Silvey, and a cataloged history of the Reys by curator Dee Jones, this collection offers a fun and fascinating portrait of a classic character and his unique creators.

Editorial Review:

A gothic tale becomes all too shockingly real in this mesmerizing magnum opus by the acclaimed author of FEED.

It sounds like a fairy tale. He is a boy dressed in silks and white wigs and given the finest of classical educations. Raised by a group of rational philosophers known only by numbers, the boy and his mother — a princess in exile from a faraway land — are the only persons in their household assigned names. As the boy's regal mother, Cassiopeia, entertains the house scholars with her beauty and wit, young Octavian begins to question the purpose behind his guardians' fanatical studies. Only after he dares to open a forbidden door does he learn the hideous nature of their experiments — and his own chilling role in them. Set against the disquiet of Revolutionary Boston, M. T. Anderson's extraordinary novel takes place at a time when American Patriots rioted and battled to win liberty while African slaves were entreated to risk their lives for a freedom they would never claim. The first of two parts, this deeply provocative novel reimagines the past as an eerie place that has startling resonance for readers today.

Stop and smell the flowers... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is not a review, others have done that excellently, it is a memory. When i was eight, Ferdinand was my favourite. Thirty eight years later and unremembered until finding it just now, the flashback was so intense i could hardly finish reading the Amazon review through tears of nostalgia. I smelled the flowers and felt that simple happiness that Ferdinand radiated all over again. If you want your child to enjoy a great yarn, be engaged by intense illustrations, learn to be peaceable and stay true to themselves, and have a powerful remembrance of a book later in life, get them "The Story of Ferdinand".

A series addition you'll be thankful to get your hands on 5 out of 5 stars.

Thanksgiving. A time for friends, family, a long-awaited break from the pressures of school, and giving thanks for everything we have received over the past year. Or so it should be. For Waverly Owls, Thanksgiving is a time to kiss classes goodbye, party until the wee hours of the night, find solace in a long weekend, and avoid the drama of our oft-times bizarre and aggravating families. Just ask It Girls Jenny Humphrey, Tinsley Carmichael, Callie Vernon, and Brett Messerschmidt.

Jenny Humphrey never thought that Tinsley Carmichael would turn into someone she could call a friend, but over the past few weeks, the two of them have blossomed into bosom buddies who share secrets, give each other advice, and gossip about guys. Throw in Southern Belle Callie Vernon, and you've got yourself the Three Musketeers. Callie, Jenny, and Tinsley all think that they're destined to have a delightful three-day weekend in the city, but things go horribly wrong the minute they arrive in NYC. For one, Jenny's apartment is full of bald-headed, robed Hare Krishnas who are creepier than words can describe. Tinsley's parents have left town without any forewarning, abandoning her with no sign of an available hotel room anywhere. Callie, on the other hand, is destined for the time of her life. She's about to meet up with her beloved boyfriend, Easy Walsh, on the top of the Empire State Building. With no place to crash, the trio head to nerdy Yvonne Stidder's place to party like it's 1999. But partying isn't the only thing on the menu. Tinsley is determined to win back the affections of flirty freshman Julian McCafferty, Jenny is longing to put the memories of her relationship with Easy in the past, and Callie is simply eager to hook up with her soul mate once again.

Brett, on the other hand, is looking to simply stir up trouble for her new in-laws back in New Jersey. Spending the long weekend in her animal print McMansion, Brett knows that her Thanksgiving is going to be ruined, but when she discovers that she has the power to teach her future in-laws a lesson they'll never forget, she ceases the opportunity. Guess they'll soon learn that tangoing with an It Girl is never a good idea.

The closing pages of TEMPTED left me salivating to learn what would happen to our favorite It Girls - Callie, Jenny, Tinsley, and Brett. INFAMOUS picks up right where that storyline left off, providing new drama, gossip, and adventures for our favorite characters. As usual, Jenny is her typical naïve self; but with the assistance of romance expert Tinsley by her side, she may refrain from making the same "love" mistakes she's made in the past. Tinsley, while constantly trying to maintain a hard exterior, has finally met her match in Julian McCafferty - a boy who proves he may just be the one to tame our favorite wild child. Brett, having been exiled to Jersey, shows readers that, even when you're away from the city you can have a good time - at the expense of others. And Callie, with all her wild dreams of the picture perfect wedding to Easy is living proof that maybe, just maybe, distance doesn't make the heart grow fonder, but, rather, makes the memory of your current love dim with each passing day. Once more, Cecily von Ziegesar has penned a novel that is both delicious and sinful. With the IT Girls by your side, it's impossible not to have a holiday you'll never forget. A series addition you'll be thankful to get your hands on.

Editorial Review:

When Jenny Humphrey confessed to a crime she didn't commit- starting the rampant fire that burned down Miller Farm-she thought her life at elite Waverly Academy was over. But her last minute escape from expulsion made Jenny the most talked-about girl in school. What nobody knows is who saved her. Now at the annual Halloween masquerade ball, she has a plan to unveil her secret admirer.

Callie Vernon knows who her Prince Charming is: Easy Walsh. But when he discovered she and Tinsley Carmichael tried to get Jenny kicked out, Easy dumped her on the spot. Now Callie is dressing up as Cinderella in hopes of winning back his heart. Can she convince Easy she's the one before the clock strikes midnight? Or will her glass slipper-and her heart-be permanently broken?

Everyone wants a fairy-tale ending. But there can only be one It Girl.

My daughter's favorite book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The summary: This book is a great combination of thick board pages, big cartoon people, bold colors and vivid images, and interesting interactive flaps. It's great for holding a babies attention and getting them engaged.
My daughter is 6 months old, and this has been her favorite book since she was 4 months (which is a really long time in baby age ). At first, she just watched me lift the flaps and her eyes would get wide. It was the only book that retained her attention. Now that she's a little older, she loves to try to open and close the flaps herself. Also, the colors are vivid and the pictures are interesting and bold, so she can stare at one page for several minutes and remain interested.
I've bought several of the other books by the same author that are the same theme: Where is baby's belly button; where is baby's mommy; Daddy and me. She likes all of them, but this is her favorite. Every page has a big picture of a child, which seems to be part of the tremendous appeal. And I like it too, so I don't mind reading it 4,000 times! :-)

Editorial Review:

Baby is bundled in a mountain of clothes! Peek under the flaps of clothing to find out what's underneath, and play this fun peekaboo book again and again!

Toddlers love nothing more than pointing out their heads, shoulders, knees, and toes! Lift the flap of a shirtsleeve to discover the elbow, pull up the boots to discover the wriggling toes! With child-appealing language and striking collage paper illustrations, Marion Dane Bauer and Karen Katz capture a child's fascination with his body and all of its wonderful parts. This book is a perfect addition to Karen Katz's flap board book series.

Grandchild far away???? 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My granddaughter is only 20 months old and lives in Australia. I live in Philadelphia. I have actually seen her in person only 3 times since she was born. We "meet" on line about once a week with webcams ready. Although she speaks well, she's not quite ready for a full discussion. But, when she came to visit at 16 months, she really knew me instantly!

I had the idea that we could "read" together, so I ordered several Dr. Seuss books - 2 of each - from Amazon.com. She gets to choose the book, and I have my copy near at hand. We can not only read, but I can also point out the various pictures.

Last week, when reading "Hands Hands Fingers Thumb," I decided to bring out an African drum I have in the house. My daughter brought out one she had at her house, and my granddaughter and I played the drums together. "One thumb, one thumb, drumming on the drum. Dum ditty dum ditty dum dum dum." We were both laughing hard and had a great time. It was the first time I felt we were able to play together. Thanks, Amazon!

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 18 month old son loves this book! He watched me do the movements as I read it and now he does them on his own when I read the book! Very cute and interactive.

Eric Carle does it again! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Our 20 month old and 3 year old boys love this Eric Carle gem. It combines beautiful pictures of animals with simple rhythmic text showing body parts and actions -- turning heads, bending necks, raising shoulders, arching backs and others. Best of all, it allows active participation by imitating what is on the page. We have purchased quite a few books but this one is magic.

Good "move around" type of story 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In this book, various animals and children move parts of their body and encourage other children to do so.

Eric Carle is truly a master of this kind of text. Each spread follows the same repetitive structure - "I'm a $ANIMAL and I can $VERB my $BODYPART - can you? I can do it!" - which makes it very suitable both for young children learning to speak and older children figuring out how to read.

The only part I don't like is at the end, when the little boy says to his parrot (in a neat turnaround) "I am I, and I can wiggle my toe". It doesn't sound very idiomatic to me - I would say, in normal speech "I am me", or perhaps (in the form followed in the rest of the book) "I am a child" or "I am a person" or "I am a human".

This book is also, obviously good to encourage kids to move during a rainy-day storytime, or to let them move if they always are fidgeting during storytime.

Editorial Review:

Are you ready?
Here we go!
Move yourself
From Head to Toe

I can do it! That's what kids will say when they wiggle, stomp, thump, and bend across the pages of this book. Laughter and squeals of delight will abound as boys and girls (and their elders, too!) participate in the action.
