Classic 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a good book about the adventures Corduroy goes on in order to find a button. He *doesn't* find a button, but that's all right - a little (African-American, if that's relevant) girl takes him home anyway. "I like you just the way you are!"

I do find that Corduroy's dialog is a little sappy, and it's somewhat weird to me that he can actually talk to Lisa, but it's still a good book.

Two boys' review: Simply, a classic 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I couldn't imagine our children's bookshelf without

The Cat in the Hat
Green Eggs and Ham
The Lorax
How the Grinch Stole Christmas

This silly story centers around self-responsibility. The children panic because they know their mother won't be happy if she comes home and find the house a mess. The fish fluctuates between being an annoyance and a voice of reason.

The story stars a well-meaning cat who tries to release the children from an afternoon of boredom. He brings excitement, which quickly devolves into chaos...or so it seems.

This is a fun bedtime story, nothing more, nothing less. My sons weren't looking for a debate about latch-key children and abandonment. We'll leave those reviews to the sociology graduates.

If your children enjoy this book, I also recommend, "The Cat in the Hat Comes Back."

Editorial Review:

To accompany the release of the live action movie of The Cat in the Hat, starring Mike Myers, HarperCollins are proud to present Dr. Seuss's original, classic tale of the coolest, hippest cat in history! When the Cat in the Hat steps in on the mat, Sally and her brother are in for a roller-coaster ride of havoc and mayhem! The Cat can rescue them from a dull rainy day, but it means lots of thrills and spills along the way. The wonderfully anarchic Cat in the Hat is one of the most popular characters in children's fiction, and this book is ideal for budding readers to tackle on their own.

I am ambivalent about the whole series 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am a bit ambivalent about this series. On the one hand I completely disagree with those reviewers that complain that this book sets bad behavioral standards. Common! If your child needs to be reminded that we do not punch friends that call us names, you are in trouble. Don't blame the book. This is something we covered early in preschool. But we all feel like doing this from time to time. So, it is easy to identify with Junie B. and laugh about her and with her. Some moral lessons of the series are neat. I liked the one about Job Day, where all kids wanted to be somebody "rich and famous", while Junie B. decided to become a janitor, because janitors save people and paint and unlock things.

However, I am somewhat concerned about the language. The language used in this book is persistently grammatically incorrect (e. g. "bited","it was very too big", "worser", "I quick run...", and worst of all "Me and my friend.."). The intention is to make Junie B. sound like a real kid, but I think Ms. Park is overdoing it a bit. In any case, i am sure that if your child reads just a few of these books it will not ruin their grammar, but if they get really hooked up on them and read the entire series, some language damage control might become necessary. In any case, my daughter seems to filter all this wrong language, and reads the words as they should be and not the way they appear...

I just wish there was a series out there, that would have nice real life stories, funny and not preachy, written in a good grammatical language.

GREAT BOOK 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is my favorite out of the first four. The reason I like the fourth book the best is because it has the most details. For example J.K. Rowling described the dragons that Harry fights against very well. She does it well because she uses examples skin color and various things like that. Another reason I like this book the best is because it has a lot of action. One example of action was when Harry had to fight a giant spider. Another moment of action was when Harry had to fight the dragons. Also there was an example of action when Harry had to fight the merpoeple. The last moment of action was when Harry fought he-who-must-not-be-named. The last reason I liked this book was because of the vocabulary. It was interesting how the cruciatus curse came from the Latin stem cruc. Another vocabulary word I learned was Yule which meant Christmas. Also my favorite vocabulary word was hippogriff. A hippogriff is a half horse half eagle. The reason I chose the word is because it sounded cool. These reasons are why I think it is the best book out of the first four Harry potter books.

First time reading through 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Yes, this is my first time reading through the chronicles of Narnia. This book was very exciting. Every page after page, I felt if I was really there from the first to the last page of the book. This is one of the most exciting books that I have ever read. I would encourge all of the adults plus children to read because you don't have to be young to enjoy this book you can be old as a parent or a grand parent and still feel excited about reading a novel like this.
It comes to my attention that this book is not in the order that the author has wrote it in but I have to say it makes an excitable story to read. This would make perfect birthday/christmas presnt for anyone who loves to read.

Fantastic 5 out of 5 stars.

These books are a must read for people of all ages. These books are an excellent way, especially for children, to introduce or become introduced to the ideas Christianity. In addition to that, they are excellent sources of entertainment. They are very fun to read and once you pick them up you will probably find them very hard to put down. Wonderful books to read for yourself or fantastic to give as gifts. There aren't enough good things I can say about these books.

Great recognition gift 4 out of 5 stars.

We use this book as a completion/graduation gift for a summer program for high school students that gives them experience in working at a university-level research project. The program is called SHARP. The book edition is hardback with a color-embossed jacket, so it will hold up as a keepsake, and the kids use it as they would a yearbook--collecting autographs and keep-in-touch messages from their friends and teachers.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. "Don't be fooled by the title of this seriocomic ode to success; it's not 'Climb Every Mountain,' kid version. All journeys face perils, whether from indecision, from loneliness, or worst of all, from too much waiting. Seuss' familiar pajama-clad hero is up to the challenge, and his odyssey is captured vividly in busy two-page spreads evoking both the good times (grinning purple elephants, floating golden castles) and the bad (deep blue wells of confusion). Seuss' message is simple but never sappy: life may be a 'Great Balancing Act,' but through it all 'There's fun to be done.'"--(starred) Booklist.

I love this book - it's a fun, quick read and I love the author's sense of humor. My daughter is 2 1/2 and is a little luke-warm on the book, but I love it.

Great book for babies 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is one of those "what do farm animals say" books, except that some of the animals are a bit... weird (rhinoceroses? Singing pigs?), so Hilarity Ensues.

This is, like many of Boynton's works, a very short book, perfect for babies and for toddlers with a low attention span. Unfortunately, the short length means that your kid will more-or-less outgrow it by pre-k (except as an occasional filler), but that's the price of having a book your baby will sit through.

Editorial Review:

Serious silliness for all ages. Artist Sandra Boynton is back and better than ever with completely redrawn versions of her multi-million selling board books. These whimsical and hilarious books, featuring nontraditional texts and her famous animal characters, have been printed on thick board pages, and are sure to educate and entertain children of all ages.

Huckleberry Finn 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Huckleberry Finn is a classic. Simple as that. It provides a look into what life was probably like for a 19th century boy. It was different than the life of children today, because today life centers around education. Back then, it was a regular thing to play hooky, even though they got in trouble for it when they were caught. And when they were punished, usually it was with a beating instead of `You're Grounded!'.

The book shows us how badly slaves were treated. They weren't even considered humans! It was like they didn't have feelings, and didn't see things the same way white people did. They way the slaves actually did think was odd. It was sad to see that they could slap a slave for no reason, and the slave would accept it either because they were used to it or they thought that whites were better than them.

Huck Finn is rather unrealistic in the aspect of adventure. I'm guessing most boys back then didn't run off with an escaped slave to Cairo. The way that Mark Twain wrote the book was different than other first/second person books I've seen. The dialogue was very much like the 19th century southern Mississippi talk. Sometimes it got hard to decipher what a paragraph in slave-speak meant because it was so obscure.

All in all, Mark Twain's writing style is different than the traditional Southern book, but that doesn't detract at all from the story. I liked it!

Editorial Review:

'Cordially hated and dreaded by all the mothers of the town because he was idle, and lawless, vulgar, and bad - and because all their children admired him so', Huckleberry Finn, the fourteen-year-old son of the town drunkard, joins runaway slave Jim on an exciting journey down the mighty Mississippi River on a raft.

Great series 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

His Dark Materials is a really good series of books. I've never been much for fantasy, nor have I read a lot of children's books. Harry Potter looks boring, so I've stayed away. My draw to these books started with a an e-mail forward last Christmas, one of those alarmist e-mails trying to convince me to boycott the movie due to its "atheist themes."...I wanted to see what all the controversy was about, what could rile up the e-mail mob.

Pullman's story is fascinating. Yes, his story does challenge authoritarianism and dogma. He does so in a way that not only entertains, but provokes thoughts, forcing the reader to challenge his beliefs on human nature. The story isn't necessarily anti-God, as much as it deconstructs the mythology we've created around the worship of God. This theme isn't in any way heavy handed...the story is also one of two children growing up and developing their own worldview.

Despite all the symbolism and controversy, these are 3 very good books that were fun to read.

Editorial Review:

Now, for the first time, the HIS DARK MATERIALS Trilogy is available in a trade paperback edition. All three books in the His Dark Materials trilogy-- THE GOLDEN COMPASS, THE SUBTLE KNIFE, and THE AMBER SPYGLASS--are available in a new complete boxed set featuring the trade paperbacks. New material is available in all three books: The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife feature black-and-white chapter-opening art by Philip Pullman himself; The Amber Spyglass features chapter-opening quotes from the likes of Milton, Donne, Blake, Byron and the Bible, which did not appear in hardcover.

Learn Your Lesson to Care About Your Family Too 5 out of 5 stars.

Knuffle Bunny is two of my students' favorite book. Check out their reviews below:

Learn Your Lesson to Care About Your Family Too

When Trixe went to the laundromat she put her Knuffle Bunny down to help her father. Knuffle Bunny was her favrite stuffed animal. Then they went back hom. Trixie noticed her Knuffle Bunny was gone. When she got home her mother said "Where's Knuffle Bunny!" Then they ran back ot the landromat. Then they found her. This book Knuffle Bunny is for people that only care for their stuffed animals.

I think that because Trixe got happier when she found her nuffle bunny, and shejumped up and down and screamed "nuffle bunny!"

Another reason I think that is because they had to run all the way back to the laundromat just because of Knuffle Bunny. Instead of just letting it wash, and she made her father hurt himself.

Another reason I think that is because she made her dad stick his head in the washing mashine while the mashine was still on.

If you only care about your stuffed animal, then get off your bottom and run to the library hury up before it closes "go...go...go!"

Trixie and Knuffle Bunny

Trixie goes to the laundromat with her dad. Trixie sees she does not have her bunny knuffle bunny. She started to cry and drag her feet. Then her dad saw the same thing she did not have Knuffle Bunny. Her dad helped her look for it he went crazzy for it. Then her dad looked and looked for the bunny in the wash. Then he found it. When trixie gets it out of the wash she screams Knuffle Bunny wich were her frist words. That is how I know Trixie loves her stuffed bunny Knuffle Bunny. And it is special to her.

One reason I know Trixie loves Knuffle Bunny is because she cries really loud when she does not have it. She also cries all the way to the hosue for him. She also would not leave the house with out Knuffle Bunny.

Another reason I know is because Trixie makes her dad look really hard. She talks Knuffle Bunny everywhere with her. That is how I know she loves Knuffle Bunny.

The last reason Trixie is excited when she gets Knuffle Bunny back. When Trixie got Knuffle Bunny, Trixie said her first words which were "Knuffle Bunny" because she loves him. Trixie is very excited when she gets her bunny back.

This is how I know Trixie loves Knuffle Bunny.

Editorial Review:

Trixie, Daddy, and Knuffle Bunny take a trip to the neighborhood Laundromat. But the exciting adventure takes a dramatic turn when Trixie realizes somebunny was left behind . . .

This 2005 Caldecott Honor book uses a combination of muted black-and-white photographs and expressive illustrations and tells a brilliantly true-to-life tale about what happens when Daddy’s in charge and things go terribly, hilariously wrong.
