I've bought 8 of these over 20 years 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this for my daughter and later I bought it for friends' children. I'll probably search for it for my grandchildren too. You can probably guess that I like it! Buying for kids is such fun because you get the wow factor, and then you get to see whether they really take to it by reading/playing with it. Kids don't fib about this stuff, do they! I can report 100% success. The enthusiam they have for all the hidden messages, cards, games is so sweet. This truly is a gift that grows and grows on them. See also the Christmas Postman - 5 Stars!

Note - if you have to get a used one, verify all the bits are included. The book wouldn't work without those.

Lost & Found... 5 out of 5 stars.

excellent young adult fantasy thriller 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Like many sixteen-year-old high school students, Erin Misrahe struggles to belong to any crowd, but she is different. When stressed out sweet Erin turns into violent Shevaun; she hurts those nearby and when she reverts back to prime ego, she has no idea how she got where she is and what she did to others. Diagnosed by doctors as a mental illness, she is sent to the hospital and medicated.

When she is released and enrolls at Nefershen Public High School where Erin makes friends with fencing team member Marissa who she see shift into a tigress. Assumed that she had another psychotic incident, Erin is back at the ward. When she awakens she is in a different place with a man claiming to be her husband Adjila the witch and that she is Shevaun the vampire. They want to know why Erin and Shevaun switch places so they can end that tie if necessary by killing the human teen.

This is an excellent young adult fantasy thriller that anchors the exhilarating story line in the mundane human realm through the beleaguer teen's high school, family, and even the psycho ward; yet also insures the fantasy world once she crosses over (with readers) feels genuine. The cast is solid in both environs especially Erin. Amelia Atwater-Rhodes's fabulous tale is all about reality is in the eye of the beholder.

Editorial Review:

Sixteen-year-old Erin Misrahe just wants to be like everyone else in her new school. But Erin has more to worry about than passing AP Chemistry or making friends. In times of stress, she has always been overcome by her alter ego, Shevaun, whose violent behavior wreaks havoc on those around her. Erin can never remember anything about these episodes, and she’s grateful to have been spared them for a while.

But when a protective friend comes back into Erin’s life, he insists that Shevaun is a vampire who actually exists apart from Erin. Shevaun has dangerous allies, like the handsome witch Adjila—and they’re determined to sever Shevaun’s connection to Erin once and for all.

Editorial Review:

The Newbery-winning fantasy series now available in gorgeous new paperback editions!

Since The Book of Three was first published in 1964, young readers have been enthralled by the adventures of Taran the Assistant Pig-Keeper and his quest to become a hero. Taran is joined by an engaging cast of characters that includes Eilonwy, the strong-willed and sharp-tongued princess; Fflewddur Fflam, the hyperbole-prone bard; the ever-faithful Gurgi; and the curmudgeonly Doli—all of whom have become involved in an epic struggle between good and evil that shapes the fate of the legendary land of Prydain. Released over a period of five years, Lloyd Alexander’s beautifully written tales not only captured children’s imaginations but also garnered the highest critical praise.

The Black Cauldron was a Newbery Honor Book, and the final volume in the chronicles, The High King, crowned the series by winning the Newbery Medal for “the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.”

Henry Holt is proud to present this classic series in a new, redesigned paperback format. The jackets feature stunning art by acclaimed fantasy artist David Wyatt, giving the books a fresh look for today’s generation of young fantasy lovers. The companion book of short stories, The Foundling is also available in paperback at this time.

In their more than thirty years in print, the Chronicles of Prydain have become the standard of excellence in fantasy literature for children.

clumsy translations / great stories 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 15 people found this review helpful.

There are many better translations out there, so there is no excuse to produce something that reads badly. I was disappointed and bought another edition. Mine is being resold on Amazon. I hate these bogus "classics."

The Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales, Deluxe Edition (Literary Classics) 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Excellent edition, however I had hoped to receive one with colour plates rather than the black and white plates. This was my only disappointment. The book was luxuriously bound and beautifully put together. All the stories are there, and it is funny how ones memories can play tricks as I thought the description in the story The Tinder Box described one of the dogs as having 'eyes like saucers' when the book texted 'eyes like teacups' or 'eyes like towers'. I am in no position to argue, but the story still remains magical.

Worth having this in any serious book collection, but as the pages are quite fragile I would suggest avoiding letting children having free run of this in case it gets damaged, perhaps until they are at least about 8 with advanced reading capabilities.

Editorial Review:

Here are all 159 tales written by Hans Christian Anderson, the master Danish storyteller, accompanied by illustrations from Arthur Rackham, Hans Richter, and other. These cherished tales include:

• "The Little Mermaid"

• "Thumbelina"

• "The Emperor's New Clothes"

• "The Snow Queen"

• "Ib and Little Christina"

• "The Princess and the Pea"

Not the Best Copy of a Beautiful Story 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

"Take care my skirt don't trip you up..."
"Don't Meg pull fair?"
"Oh, yes she tries to but she don't love Bethy as I do..."
If you're looking for a copy of Little Women with lots of colorful illustrations don't buy this copy there are none.
If you're looking for a copy with extra information about the author don't buy this one there's only a very short paragraph at the end about Louisa May Alcott that comes after the 15 "book discussion" type questions that are not very useful to an independant reader.
I was not impressed with the wording of this Sterling Publishing edition of this beloved children's classic. I've read other editions of Little Women and don't remember the word don't being used so poorly throughout the novel as it was in this edition. Are these the original words of Louisa May Alcott or don't people know how to use proper English back in the 1860's?

Editorial Review:

The beautiful Meg, artistic tomboy Jo, doomed Beth, and selfish Amy: since the publication of Little Women in 1869, these four sisters have become America’s most beloved literary siblings. Louisa May Alcott’s rich and realistic portrait has inspired three movies and stirred the emotions of countless young girls. Set in New England during the Civil War, the novel follows the adventures of the March sisters as they struggle to pursue their dreams.

Good 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I was required to read this book for school and couldn't help having a bad attitude towards it. At first I expected it to be boring and drawn-out but found something much different. This novel shows a girl change in her thoughts, feelings, appearence, and overall self. After an exciting and mysterious voyage on a feared ship whith a twisted crew and captain charlotte finds herself with a whole new perspective. This book has great descriptions, you feel like you know Charlotte very well, it is a little confusing because of the references to the setting of a ship that most people are not familiar with, but shockes you with a surprise ending. Fabulous story that you will thorouly enjoy reading!

Editorial Review:

An ocean voyage of
unimaginable consequences

Not every thirteen-year-old girl is accused of murder, brought to trial, and found guilty. But I was just such a girl, and my story is worth relating even if it did happen years ago. Be warned, however: If strong ideas and action offend you, read no more. Find another companion to share your idle hours. For my part I intend to tell the truth as I lived it.

Although simple in design and message, this book is great for exploring affection, emotions, and simple communication. Because of its simple story line and subject matter, it's completely engrossing whether I'm reading it to my daughter or she's turning the pages by herself. One of our favorites, especially since it provides an excuse to sit down for an extra hug.

Why would you inflict this book on a child at Christmas? 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The art in this book is truly beautiful and does an excellent job of conveying the sad, joyless life the Little Match Girl has versus the warm, colorful life of those around her.

But this book is really not appropriate for a young child. We received it for Christmas for our 4-year-old daughter. She won't read it until she is old enough to find it in the library catalog all by herself, if I can help it.

I read over some of the other comments about how this is the saddest Christmas book they have ever read, and how important it is to expose our children to the importance of empathy and action for people in need. I agree that these are very important morals to teach our children - but maybe you should try action (soup kitchens, food pantries, adopt-a-family) instead of making your child sob right before bed.

Hans Christian Anderson is an amazing writer and I look forward to introducting my child to his stories (unadulterated by Disney) - but when she is a tween and can handle learning about Anderson's milleau and how that influenced his writing.

This book is especially inappropriate for non-religious families. I am an atheist and found the "child finds comfort in arms of grandmother as she dies and is scooped into heaven" message to make this story even sadder.

Your mileage may vary. At the very least, I recommend upping the age range to 7-8 years old.

Editorial Review:

Fearful of returning home to a violent father without having sold enough matches for the day, the Little Match Girl remains on the street resigned to warming herself by lighting matches. With each match, she sees a vision—a warm stove, a table laden with hot food, a beautiful Christmas tree decorated with lights leading up to the sky, so high that one becomes a shooting star. According to her grandmother, each shooting star is a person who had recently passed on and is now heading to heaven. Her next strike brings a vision of her grandmother—the only person in the world who ever loved the Little Match Girl—who takes her away in her warm embrace to heaven. The classic ending is intact here and accompanied by gentle, sensitive illustrations—children will return to this stirring tale often to understand its tragedy and the valuable lessons within.
