A little complex for a 6 year old 3 out of 5 stars.

These books are very complex. A lot of little "notations" accros the pages. My daughter is a little overwhelmed by it. More suitable for an 8 or 9 year old

Another delightful adventure on the magic schoolbus 5 out of 5 stars.

The magical Ms. Frizzle takes her class to the ocean in "The Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor." The bus transforms itself as needed, from a submarine to a surfboard and the class clothing changes with it from scuba gear to Ms. Frizzle's beachball sandels. The bus travels the continental shelf to the deep ocean floor and on to tropical coral reefs, with numerous excursions for children to examine the details.

The illustrations are filled with facts, labeled wildlife and wise-cracking children. The information is easy to swallow as well as interesting and the humor relies on lame sarcasm and a silly lifeguard -- kids should love it.

Sub-bus 5 out of 5 stars.

My 8 year old loves The Magic School Bus series of books (he does not like the show). He read this to me for reading but we also use them for science. In this book we look at the bottom of the ocean and each of its phases - shore, intertidal zone, continental shelf, continental slope, deep ocean, trench, mountain, island, reef. It has just enough ridiculous to make it fun. Recommended for ages 6-9 years and reading level 3rd grade.

Editorial Review:

Assuming they are simply going on an ordinary field trip to the beach, Ms. Frizzle's students enjoy a pleasant surprise when their teacher drives right into the ocean.

Good book bad CD 4 out of 5 stars.

I love his book and the original tape that goes with it of Bill Martin reading the book and the book being sang. Gwneyth Partrow should stay with acting or bed time stories. My students reacted better to my off key singing than to her sleept voice.

This particular book has an included CD. The CD sleeve was glued upside down to the back cover so that when you open the book it falls out of the book. It is not worth it to me to send the book back to the seller for replacement, but it does sour me on the Amazon experience.

Editorial Review:

Four decades ago, Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle collaborated on their first book together, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Since then, Brown Bear has become a perpetual favorite for generations of teachers, parents, and children, selling more than 7 million copies in various formats and languages.

To celebrate Brown Bear’s 40th birthday, this special anniversary edition is a larger size, has an updated cover, and includes an audio CD. Brown Bear fans will be able to read along with the story as it’s read on the CD and hear the author and illustrator talk about this beloved book.  We invite you to enjoy Bill Martin’s rhythmic text and Eric Carle’s stunning illustrations in a whole new way!

Just, no... 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The thing I didn't like about Elijah of Buxton is that I was having trouble with the slang... I understand that it added kind of a uniqeness to the book, but what's the use if you can't even READ the book? So that was a little bit bothersome. And also, there's not as much dialogue, (which for my prefrance, I enjoy lots of dialogue) and Elijah sometimes rambles a little bit throughout the book, which can sometimes get boring and endless.
I had to read this book for book club, and I ended up just skimming it, because I just really didn't like it... This is only my opinion. The one good thing about the book though, is that it's religious, and sends a very positive message to stay strong in tough times.

Editorial Review:

Eleven-year-old Elijah lives in Buxton, Canada, a settlement of runaway slaves near the American border. He's the first child in town to be born free, and he ought to be famous just for that. Unfortunately, all that most people see is a "fra-gile" boy who's scared of snakes and talks too much. But everything changes when a former slave steals money from Elijah's friend, who has been saving to buy his family out of captivity in the South. Now it's up to Elijah to track down the thief--and his dangerous journey just might make a hero out of him, if only he can find the courage to get back home.

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

Eric Carle is a favorite in our house, but this is one of his weaker titles. The illustration of the spider spinning her web barely changes from one page to the next, and there's no clever twist that "makes" the book, like in A Very Hungry Caterpillar. After reading it to our son once, he never seemed interested in looking at it again - but he does ask for Carle's other books often.

One of Hayley's Favourites 5 out of 5 stars.

My husband bought this book for our 9month old daughter, Hayley. She absolutely loves us to read it to her. She loves to feel the spiders web and will mimic the animal noises. What a great book!

The Very Busy Spider 4 out of 5 stars.

I have received and reviewed the book "The Very Busy Spider".
It is a very good book and nicely illustrated.

Editorial Review:

With over 300,000 copies sold since its publication in 1985, The Very Busy Spider is well on its way to becoming a modern classic. The raised lines for the spider, its web, and an unsuspecting fly allow both sighted and visually impaired children to follow the action. Full color.

Editorial Review:

Murderers, mob bosses, and convicts . . . these guys are not your average neighbors. Unless you live on Alcatraz. It’s 1935 and twelve-year-old Moose Flanagan and his family have just moved to the infamous island that’s home to criminals like notorious escapee Roy Gardner, Machine Gun Kelly, and of course, Al Capone. Now Moose has to try to fit in at his new school, avoid getting caught up in one of the warden’s daughter’s countless plots, and keep an eye on his sister Natalie, who’s not like other kids. All Moose wants to do is protect Natalie, live up to his parents’ expectations, and stay out of trouble. But on Alcatraz, trouble is never very far away.

Walk Two Moons 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Never judge a book solely on its cover. Wait until you read it. When the guy in ratty clothes drives by in a junk pile on wheels, don't assume he's poor. He may be the richest man in town. When it takes that socially awkward student in your class extra time to coherently put words together or complete an assignment, don't assume he's "learning disabled." He may have the most creative mind in your room. And when the single, redheaded woman who lives next door and keeps to herself, begins acting friendly and goes out of her way to be kind to you, don't assume she's an ax wielding murderer with something to hide. She may just care about you. This is a lesson that Salamanca Tree Hiddle learns all too well, in Sharon Creech's amazing Newbery Medal Winner, Walk Two Moons.

Sugar Hiddle left her home, husband, and daughter in Bybanks, Kentucky and set out by bus to Lewiston, Idaho without any real explanation and never returned. So Sal, Sugar's 13 year-old daughter, embarks on a cross-country trip with her grandparents to track her mother down and bring her home. Along the journey, Sal entertains her grandparents by telling them the story of her friend, Phoebe Winterbottom, whose story begins to weave itself around Sal's own tale. Like Sal, Phoebe has a mother with plenty of questions on her mind and like Sal, there are some hard truths to life that Phoebe will need to learn how to face.

The first time I finished this book, I was at a loss for words. I wondered how Sharon Creech managed to tackle such adult themes in such a kid-friendly book, because there are plenty of them scattered throughout these pages. The whole idea of writing a story for children about a woman who packs up her things and leaves her loving husband and caring daughter for no apparent reason, could be a dangerous path to tread along for a children's author. Think of the fear you could instill in your young readers. "What if MY mother left me without explaining why?" Add to this the possibility of infidelity (because I do believe that Creech KNOWS her readers are going to go there) and you have the ingredients for an extremely heavy, thought-provoking, and scary novel. However, Creech pulls this off impeccably by trusting that her children readers are able to handle the assumptions they will make through the course of reading this book. And parents remember, don't judge a book by its cover, or at least until you've read it. That's the point Creech is trying to hammer home. There's more to this story than what first meets the eye. Much more.

Creech takes the Native American proverb, "Never judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins" and lets it resonate throughout her novel. To truly understand and appreciate the intricate layers to Walk Two Moons, you need to be aware of this. It's this proverb that I feel, drives every decision Creech made when telling Sal and Phoebe's stories. It's this lesson that carries the plot. Which brings me to something I have to discuss but wish to do so carefully . . . the "surprise" ending.

My intention is not to give away too much of the story, (although by discussing it, I hope to entice you enough to pick up a copy for yourself) but to address a very popular critique of this novel and defend Creech's work. Many negative reviews of this novel claim that Creech "tricks" her readers with her ending and in doing so, loses some credibility in the unique "story within a story" method she's chosen to write with. I could not find this to be any farther from the truth. It is absolutely necessary that Creech "trick" the reader the way she does in order to really give her true message it's meaning. Without this ending, the book would fail to live up to it's own title.

In my opinion, Walk Two Moons is nearly flawless. It is one of the most engaging books I have ever read, and is a story that can affect so many people on so many different levels. It sounds cliché to say, but there really is something for everyone. There's mystery, (who is leaving the Winterbottom secret notes), there's suspense, (who is the Stranger), there's love, (will Sal and Ben become "more than" friends), and there's drama, (why did Sal's mom really leave Bybanks). Even reluctant readers in my 5th grade classroom poured over its pages, asking questions and searching for answers. It doesn't matter the grade, it doesn't matter your age, Sharon Creech's message will speak to anyone. Open your mind, open your heart, and let Salamanca Tree Hiddle settle inside to tell you the story of her mother, her friend, and her journey.

Editorial Review:

Gramps says that I am a country girl at heart, and that is true.

Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, proud of her country roots and the "Indian-ness in her blood," travels from Ohio to Idaho with her eccentric grandparents. Along the way, she tells them of the story of Phoebe Winterbottom, who received mysterious messages, who met a "potential lunatic," and whose mother disappeared.

Beneath Phoebe's stories Salamanca's own story and that of her mother, who left on April morning for Idaho, promising to return before the tulips bloomed. Sal's mother has not, however, returned, and the trip to Idaho takes on a growing urgency as Salamanca hopes to get to Idaho in time for her mother's birthday and bring her back, despite her father's warning that she is fishing in the air.

This richly layered novel is in turn funny, mysterious, and touching. Sharon Creech's original voice tells a story like no other, one that readers will not soon forget.

Excellent purchase 5 out of 5 stars.

My grandchildren love this story! The larger format board book is very colorful and easy for little hands to manage. I found it a real bonus to hear the author, Eric Carle, read his own work and the kids can listen and read along.

Children's Must Have 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is a must-have for any children's library and was a favorite for both of my boys. When my oldest son was four, he memorized the entire book, and so we built a puppet theater and puppets for his precious performances. I recently purchased the book again for a new one year old niece, and the now teenage boys love sharing the enchantment with our family's new little one. This sturdy board book version ensures that our little one will have pages in tact a few years from now when she's ready to memorize.

Editorial Review:

Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar is now available for the first time in a new, oversized board book format, perfect for storytime or for playtime. Plus, as an added bonus, it includes a CD of Eric Carle reading his classic story. This fine audio production makes a great listen, and is a fantastic new way to encounter this famous, famished caterpillar.

Buy the for the illustration 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

0670062766 This edition is illustrated by Lauren Child. It has large type and exceptional illustrations. The attached file for the "look inside" feature is absolutely the wrong one as of this writing -- 7/27/2008. I can't find a place to tell Amazon that. The illustrations on this version are unique. The pages are designed around inserted motifs and there are many, many unique full page illustrations. No matter how many other editions of Pippi you have, buy this one too.

Editorial Review:

In 1950, Viking published the original English version of Pippi Longstocking, the story of an irrepressible red-haired, freckle-faced girl who lived with a monkey and a horse, slept with her feet on the pillow, and found her way into the hearts of children all over the world. Now, Astrid Lindgren’s best-selling book has been given a sparkling new translation by the awardwinning Tiina Nunnally and delightful full-color illustrations by the critically acclaimed Lauren Child. This large-format gift book is sure to become the definitive edition of a favorite classic.

my type 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was awesome. I enjoyed every part of it, and I was interested in the topic about mediators. The only one thing that I do have to criticize about this book is that the main character isn't catholic. I am, so in many ways, I found her beliefs conflicting with my own. It was nothing too extreme, but I wasn't fully comfortable with it.
Although, the fact that the preist was the principal made up for it. The story line is well-written. I found Suze's character perfect in the way that she was realistic and not the type where the author just makes them perfect. If you're looking for something to enjoy, pick this book up. It is finish in a day material.

Editorial Review:

Suze is a mediator -- a liaison between the living and the dead. In other words, she sees dead people. And they won't leave her alone until she helps them resolve their unfinished business with the living. But Jesse, the hot ghost haunting her bedroom, doesn't seem to need her help. Which is a relief, because Suze has just moved to sunny California and plans to start fresh, with trips to the mall instead of the cemetery, and surfing instead of spectral visitations.

But the very first day at her new school, Suze realizes it's not that easy. There's a ghost with revenge on her mind ... and Suze happens to be in the way.

a mom's review.... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

beautifully illustrated, heartwarming childrens stories. Even though the Angelina stories are geared towards girls, my little boy, at 8, enjoyed these as well, especially when mom read to him. These are good stories to read to your child at bedtime.

The artwork is detailed and delightful to look at-you'll see new things each time you look, and children love that that every scene is filled with many little mice.

This Angelina story deals our hopes and dreams(in Angelina's case constant dancing)-to follow your dreams but at the same time know there is a time and place for fun, and a time to do your work. Each book is filled with wonderful life lessons told in a gentle, non preachy way.

I highly recommend this series for any child.
5 stars!

Editorial Review:

Angelina Ballerina is the picture book that first introduced Angelina to her adoring fans. This tiny dancer has proved to have enormous staying power—she has been a hugely popular character for more than twenty years. And Angelina’s popularity only continues to grow. She is even the spokescharacter for National Dance Week. With Katharine Holabird’s lively writing and Helen Craig’s charming illustrations, the original story about the feisty little mouse who wants nothing more than to dance still keeps young ballerinas leaping with delight.
