Boring and Unclear images of Produce 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My son will read just about anything. He devours books. But not this book. This is probably the only book on our bookshelf that has never requested we look at or read. This book has no text, just watercolor paintings of the fruits and veggies. But the images are not all that easy to differeniate from one another. If, like an infant, you had not yet experienced this produce, I think that you would be unlikely to link the pictures in the book with the real thing in the grocery store or garden. I was disappointed with this book, as is my son, apparently.

Wonderful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is great for infants on up! It is bright and introduces fruits and vegetables not always encountered in baby food. Our toddler is now learning her alphabet and it is perfect! It also has given her ideas of new things to try.

L is for Lois--our 4 year old's favorite author 5 out of 5 stars.

Everywhere we turn we find Lois Ehlert books. From our local library to our boys' school book bag, Lois' books keep popping up. As I write this, our twin 4 year old boys are downstairs with their daddy getting ready for sleep while they guess away with enthusiasm at the contents of Eating for Alphabet book, all fruits and veggies. The illustrations are wonderful; the large type is perfect for children who are learning their letters and words. What is best about several of this inspired writer's books is the focus on growing the foods we eat and imparting that to our kids. Our boys' first choice is Lois' Vegetable Soup book. Eating the Alphabet is a close second. In this crazy, over-processed world, all of Lois' books are fun, inspired and offer the gift of a much easier and simple-pleasure world for our children to enjoy and cherish.

Editorial Review:

While teaching upper- and lowercase letters to preschoolers, Ehlert introduces fruits and vegetables from around the world. A glossary at the end provides interesting facts about each food.

This book is so cool. You just got to read this book. You'll laugh your pants off. You just got to read this book.

A Fish Out of Water 4 out of 5 stars.

When my son was a little boy, this was his favorite book. He wanted to take it out of the library so many times that I finally bought a copy and gave it to him for Christmas.

My little grandson is two years old and he has 3 goldfish. I thought the book would be appropriate for him -- and he loves it.

Editorial Review:

A little boy who overfeeds his goldfish begins an adventure that brings even the police and a fire engine to cope with A FISH OUT OF WATER. Beginning readers will delight in this fast moving story. 'I can read it all by myself' is the Beginner Books motto, and behind it is an understanding of how important it is for children to take pride and pleasure in their early reading. Beginner Books have been designed to appeal directly to children through the use of humour, rhyme and bright pictures that can be 'read' even by the non-reading child. Some Beginner Books are simple stories, others are hilarious nonsense: both types have been designed to give children confidence and make them want to go on reading.

"Summer" is much more fun! 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book for my three boys (aged two to four) hoping it would be as good as the most excellent book "Summer". Sadly, "Snow" is not in the same league. Indeed, it's a bit on the boring side, with forced sounding rhymes that aren't nearly as much fun as those in "Summer". My boys never ask me to read it. Summer, on the other hand, is a frequent, favorite request.

Still, it fits winter and the drawings are enjoyable. While not a must have it still has a place in our library.

Good Classic Fun 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book as it is a classic from my childhood and was excited to read it to my two year old son. He also enjoys it and I imagine will like it even more once we get some snow here and he can relate more to the images in the book.

An old favorite... 5 out of 5 stars.

This was a favorite childhood book for me and I was thrilled to be able to buy it for my boys (2 and 4) this Christmas. It has quickly become a favorite of both, especially my two year old. Here's to many happy readings!

Great book, but beware... it's a small board book 3 out of 5 stars.

The book is great, like most Dr. Seuss. But, I somehow didn't notice that I was buying a small board book. So, take note. I was trying to purchase for my 1st grader, and these are more toddler appropriate.

OK Book 5 out of 5 stars.

My son isn't really into this book, yet. It doesn't really rhyme which is why I think he likes most of the other ones. However, I just got if for him and have only read it maybe twice, so I am sure after a few more times, he will like it.

Editorial Review:

The Breadwinner brings to life an issue that has recently exploded in the international media — the reality of life under the Taliban. Young Parvana lives with her family in one room of a bombed-out apartment building in Kabul, Afghanistan. Because he has a foreign education, her father is arrested by the Taliban, the religious group that controls the country. Since women cannot appear in public unless covered head to toe, or go to school, or work outside the home, the family becomes increasingly desperate until Parvana conceives a plan. She cuts her hair and disguises herself as a boy to earn money for her family. Parvana’s determination to survive is the force that drives this novel set against the backdrop of an intolerable situation brought about by war and religious fanaticism. Deborah Ellis spent several months talking with women and girls in Afghan refugee camps in Pakistan and Russia. This suspenseful, timely novel is the result of those encounters. Royalties from the sale of The Breadwinner will go toward educating Afghan girls in Pakistani refugee camps. “A potent portrait of life in contemporary Afghanistan, showing that powerful heroines can survive even in the most oppressive ... conditions.” — Booklist

Great for teaching shapes and colors 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My son adores this book. He started looking at the colorful pictures/shapes when he was about 1 and his interest in the book has not waned, but only evolved. At some point, he liked the book so much, I bought several of the author's other books (Planting a Rainbow, Fish Eyes, Color Farm, etc.) and he was on a Lois Ehlert kick for a while where he'd only want to read and flip through her colorful and innovative illustrations. This book is ingenious in the way the author uses cut-outs to form shapes of different animals and then builds upon those primary shapes (starts out with circles, square, triangle) by using more complex shapes (hexagon, rectangle, etc.) to form images of other animals, while reinforcing the shapes used to form the animal image from the previous page.

I highly recommend this book and this author...also get "Planting a Rainbow."

Editorial Review:

Shapes and colors in your zoo, lots of things that you can do. Heads and ears, beaks and snouts, that's what animals are all about. I know animals and you do too; make some new ones for your zoo.

My favorite artwork 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I had this book as a child. It still has my favorite artwork of any of the children's books. The picture of the sleeping world, the hot dog stand, the approaching train with the truck stuck on the tracks are all etched in memory.

Eastman was a formidable children's author. His illustrations for Go Dog Go! and A Fish Out of Water were both marvelous too. And the junked car in Are You My Mother - way spooky, you understand why little bird ran away.

Good book, good read, kids pick up language quickly 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am not wildly excited by this book, as an adult reading it, I find it quite dull. However, I do think it is worth the effort, the language my pre-schoolers have picked up from this book is amazing. It makes a lovely game out of reading and my children really pick up on that.

It is the story of Sam the owl and Gus the naughty firefly. Sam wants to play, but Gus just wants to have fun. First they have a great time, but then Gus goes off to be naughty. He makes trouble for the planes in the sky by writing misdirections with his light, then he writes 'free' outside a cinema. When he makes the Hot dog stand into Cold dosgs, he meets his match. The hotdog man catches Gus and puts him in a jar. However Gus ends up saving the day when he tells a train to stop! and the hotdog mans truck is safe.

The fun which Gus has with writing, and the fun story keeps the children's interest. It really invites discussion about the story, and it also gets them trying to read the words and spell them out. A great book for kids.

Memories 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My son received this book on his third birthday - in 1977. My three year old grandson recently discovered the tattered and torn copy that I had saved. He immediately fell in love with it and proudly annouces that it is "Daddy's favorite book." I'm not sure which "boy" will be more excited when the new copy arrives but in the meantime it has brought back a flood of memories for this Grandma. What a joy!

Big Dog...Little Dog (A Bedtime Story) 5 out of 5 stars.

It is a great book for children. My daughter is now 21 years old and is pregnant with our first grandchild. We used to read this book to her as a child. Along the way I misplaced the book, and she wanted another copy to read to her child. Her dad nicknamed her "Fred" after one of the characters in this book.

I Love Fred & Ted 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Like many of the other reviewers, this was a favorite story of mine as a child back in the 70's. I am THRILLED that it is still in print and, (judging from the reviews here on Amazon), has a strong "following." The sweetness of the story is in its simplicity. I have already bought one copy as a gift, and I intend to spread the word of 'Big Dog, Little Dog' as gifts in the future as well.

Wonderful book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My children have loved this book. With the pictures of the plants there are names next to each one. My kids liked to point and say the names of all of the flowers.

Pretty pictures and educational too!

Informative and Colorful. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book would be perfect for a child who enjoys helping their parent with a garden, or a child mastering their color knowledge. It briefly explains the process of how a garden is started from seed/bulb, shows the growth of different colorful flowers and name the most common garden flowers. The pictures are basic but bold and color fills the pages which allows you to appreciate the next step in the process and the next page in the book.

A big hit with my toddler 5 out of 5 stars.

My 1 1/2 year old loves this book. She even calls it the Rainbow book. I bought it because I am really into gardening and she loves flowers. It is a great book to teach colors as well.

Editorial Review:

This educational and enjoyable book helps children understand how to plant bulbs, seeds, and seedlings, and nurture their growth. “The stylized representations of flower species are labeled throughout, allowing young children to get an idea of how each flower type contributes to the rainbow effect.”--Booklist

Not PD's Best... 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this for my niece because I always liked PD's other books as a child and this is one I hadn't seen. I previously bought her "Flap Your Wings" which is a great, fun little story, so I thought this book would be as good. It's not. It's kind of dumb, really, and there are a few things that I really don't like for little kids. First, Mrs. Bird says she "hates her nest" and she gets her way and they move. Teaching kids to say they "hate" something to get their way? Nope. Second, toward the end, Mr. Bird thinks his wife is DEAD. He thinks she's been eaten by a cat. Wow. That's bad for little kids, right? No warning there, as PD's other books involve dogs in race cars, teaching an alligator to fly, or looking for your Mom. Dead wife? Yikes. Why couldn't he just wonder where she went? Why make him think she's been digested by a cat? It's not even consistent with the story!
I should have read the book before reading it to my niece, but there was a time crunch. I give it a 3 because even though I'm not sure it's so good, she really likes it. The second time I read it to her, I edited it so that it wasn't so harsh. She's 2.5 years old, and even after 1 reading she could answer questions about the story. So as a learning book, it's right on par. I just wish they would edit it a bit. Change Mrs. Bird's objection, and take out the cat page, and it's a much better book for toddlers!
But honestly, I would recommend "Are You My Mother" "Go Dog Go" and "Flap Your Wings" and say leave "Nest" for another day...

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. Mr. and Mrs. Bird's search for a "better" nest leads them to some peculiar spots.
