Quirky fun for the young 4 out of 5 stars.

"Bark, George" is typical Silverstein, innocuous on the surface, somewhat subversive within the depths. The child I read it to loves it, and has it memorized, and the adults find the unexpected ending very amusing. A bit of all right...

this book outshined the toys on christmas morning 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was loved by my three nephews (one is 4 and the twins are 2). I was already their favourite aunt but I think I actually moved up a few notches on the scale with this one.

On my one week stay with my sister, I read this book to my nephews at least once per day. The four year-old liked it so much that we performed a show with puppets for the whole family based on this book.

Editorial Review:

"Bark, George," says George's mother, and George goes: "Meow," which definitely isn't right, because George is a dog.

And so is his mother, who repeats, "Bark, George." And George goes, "Quack, quack."

What's going on with George? Find out in this hilarious new picture book from Jules Feiffer.

A lovely book, in every way 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is terrific. It has an inspiring message that can be used to talk with kids, even young ones. The book is well-written and done with careful thought--pages can be skimmed with really young kids, while older kids can read the full text. The art is magical. I recommend this book highly.

Top inspirational holiday gift for children, 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the perfect gift to give children. Tells an inspirational story of a young boy in Africa who starts his own business and then helps others. Any child who has run a lemonade stand will be inspired.
Also has an interactive website [...] where kids can play games and help the poor each time they win. Hours of fun and good deeds at the same time.

Excellent story with a moral! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a real life story turned into a children's book to inspire hope the belief that EVERYONE can achieve if they keep trying. The book, based on the life of Dr. Kwabena Darko, "The Chicken Man" of West Africa will inspire your children to great things. A must have for any children's library.

Brilliant! Written at 3 reading levels. 5 out of 5 stars.

One Hen is not only a picture book to be read to non readers in one sentence per page, but a beginning reader's book. It is also written on the right hand side at a grade six and up level. The challenge to become involved actively in microfinancing on the final pages, has adults setting up the website in schools, libraries and book stores, enabling all to become involved in the win-win world of microfinancing. No wonder it has won business awards as well as literature kudos.

It's the real thing! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am a newspaper columnist and substitute teacher. I was subbing in a fourth grade class and due to a sudden shift in schedules, I had about 20 minutes to fill. I saw Fletcher's book on the chalk ledge and thought I'd read a chapter and make my own professional commentary. When I read the part about collecting ideas in a "ditch," I pulled my writer's notebook out of my coat pocket and shared all my little bits and pieces with the kids. It just so happened I'd recorded incidents that had happened in that school. What great support for my "real life" lesson.

Editorial Review:

Writers are like other people, except for at least one important difference. Other people have daily thoughts and feelings, notice this sky or that smell, but they don't do much about it.

Not writers. Writers react. And writers need a place to record those reactions. That's what a writer's notebook is for. It gives you a place to write down what makes you angry or sad or amazed, to write down what you noticed and don't want to forget. . . .

Deserving of the Newbery 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This biography on Abraham Lincoln is balanced perfectly, a great blend of basic information and detailed facts, without ever becoming irrelevant or too deep. Photographs enhance this effect, including a page that shows the effects of age on Lincoln's face throughout his presidency, and historical artifacts like posters and handwriting samples. This is the perfect Lincoln primer for someone just starting research, or for a middle school student with an assignment.

Rating applies to binding only 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My one star rating applies only to the condition of the book and not its content. I would rate the content 5 stars! I highly recommend the book but I ordered a hardback copy two different times and the binding was falling apart on first opening. I had to return one and am in the process of returning the second. Amazon replied immediately to my concerns and pulled the hardback edition until the problem could be solved.

Editorial Review:

A description of the boyhood, marriage, and young professional life of Abraham Lincoln includes his presidential years and also reflects on the latest scholarly thoughts about our Civil War president.

Excellent, Fascinating Tale of Adventure! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful book and is captivating from the very first chapter.

It is the adventure filled tale of one man and one 12 year old boy who go west during the California Gold Rush to seek their fortunes.

This is an EXCELLENT story, full of historical fact and fascinating descriptions of a very colorful time period in US history.

The main characters are both outstanding - they are a testament to what can happen when someone works hard, maintains their moral standards, and keeps a positive attitude.

This is a purely outstanding book for kids and adults alike!!!

A Hit! 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book aloud to my class of 4th graders and they loved it! This book had humor, suspense, and positive messages. It also gave me the opportunity to teach a little about the history of the Gold Rush. A definite hit!

The only artist I know who can create condensation with fiber 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If there were a librarian lobby out there, I would seriously suspect that Denise Fleming was held under their sway. How else to explain the fact that every book she creates fits your average children's librarian's needs to a tee? Whether she's using her one-of-a-kind humor and artistic technique to teach kids about colors as in "Lunch", providing a particularly original animal readaloud as found in "Barnyard Banter", or writing the number one BEST toddler storytime picture book, "In A Small Small Pond", the woman practically caters to your average librarian's every desire. "The First Day of Winter" is no exception to the rule. Utilizing a technique that incorporates everything from colored cotton fiber and hand-cut stencils to squeeze bottles, "Winter" provides the perfect wintertime readaloud book, especially for those with a hearty singing voice.

Written to the tune of "Twelve Days of Christmas", "The First Day of Winter" is a joyful tale of the building of a snowman. So the book begins with, "On the first day of winter my best friend gave to me ... a red cap with a gold snap". With each consecutive day the snowman is slowly built up and up. It gets two bright blue mittens, 3 striped scarfs, 4 prickly pinecones, etc. Some of these additions are alliterative and some just fun to say like, "5 birdseed pockets". With each addition of food or sustenance, winter animals cluster closer and closer to the snowman. When the last verse (it doesn't go as far as twelve) results in 10 salty peanuts it is clear that the snow"man" is actually a rather nice snow"woman". Our last images in the book are of her walking off to have a chat with another snowfellow at the top of a nearby hill.

There's such a sense of satisfaction when you read this book aloud. Even if you don't sing the words you still get a smack of enjoyment from pronouncing the words, "red cap with a gold snap". Adults can decide whether or not they want to sing "5 birdseed pockets" as you would "5 gold rings" or just keep the verse the same as the others. As always, Fleming is far more inclined to be colorful rather than dull. From the ribald blue of a blue jay to the cheery conglomeration of a bunch of different scarfs, this is as visually arresting a book as any Fleming has come up with yet. Now I cannot tell you how many times I've been approached by a library patron who wants a good snowy winter book for their kids, but without any specific holidays mixed in. Until now I've relied heavily on Ezra Jack Keats's, "The Snowy Day", and Lois Ehlert's, "Snowballs". With the publication of this book, I can now also heartily thrust "The First Day of Winter" into these parents' waiting arms with a kind of haphazard glee. A fabulous addition to any cold weather collection and a fun readaloud to boot.

Editorial Review:

A cozy, cumulative book to warm a cold winter day

Alive with swirling snow and lots of outdoor fun, the first ten days of winter bring special gifts for a special friend. This cumulative tale will have children chanting along as they discover all the trimmings needed for the most perfect snowman ever!

We love Corduroy! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Corduroy books are my daughter's (15 mo) favorites and this one is no exception. She still wants me to read it to her everyday even though the "snow days" are over for the year. The size is great for a toddler and the story is just the right length.

Cute, simple book 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for a toddler. My 18mth old will love it (Christmas present). It is simple with colorful pictures.

Editorial Review:

Join Corduroy and his friends as they zip down a hill on their sleds, build a snowman, and have a snowball fight! It’s a winter wonderland with a steaming cup of hot chocolate to warm everyone up at the end of the day.

This brightly colored shaped board book is perfect for the youngest fans of Corduroy, one of the best-loved characters in children’s books for nearly forty years.

Knights, Magic, Quests, and Little Singing Books 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Cornelia Funke has a winner with Igraine the Brave. Just right for the lovers of fairy tales, magic, or fantasy, on the sweeter side of "Harry Potter". Igraine is a spirited and loyal heroine, who uses her brain and her skills to help the people she cares about. The narrative was tight and engaging, with just enough whimsy to remind me of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles and some of Lloyd Alexander's light-hearted quest tales. This book is readable for any kid who can tackle the likes of Ramona Quimby or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Editorial Review:

Princess Igraine dreams of becoming a famous knight just like her great grandfather, but the truth is, life at the family castle is rather boring. Until the nephew of the baroness-next-door shows up. He's got a dastardly plan to capture the castle and claim as his own the wonderful singing spell books that belong to Igraine's magician parents. To make matters worse, at the very moment of the siege, her mom and dad botch a spell, turning themselves into pigs! Aided by a Gentle Giant and a Sorrowful Knight, it's up to Igraine to be brave and save the day--and the books!

Love it 5 out of 5 stars.

Our two-year old has fallen in love with this book. We checked out from the library and after renewing it three times bought our own copy. It teaches kids about opposites or things in relation to each other in a really cute way.

Easy Read, Possible Boredom 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book is certainly an easy enough read for an advanced 3 yr old, but could also be easily boring. Not much excitement or surprise from page to page to keep an active child with a creative imagination occupied for very long.

It's a day care favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I operate a home daycare with children in the age range of 1-8 and the younger group 1-4 LOVE this book. The children seem to stay engaged and focus on finding the green sheep. It's great for color recognition.

Editorial Review:

There are red sheep and blue sheep, wind sheep and wave sheep, scared sheep and brave sheep, but where is the green sheep?

The search is on in this cozy, sheep-filled story from acclaimed author Mem Fox and popular Australian cartoonist Judy Horacek. Complete with sleepy rhymes and bright illustrations, this book is sure to delight children of all ages, from the very young to those just beginning to read.

Loved by My 2 Year Old 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My 2 1/2 year old adores this book. In fact, I have had to make a rule of no more than twice a day. He calls it the "laundry book". I must disagree about the caged bear scene being frightening. My son specifically requests the caged bear scene and is obviously not scared in the least. It is a sweet tale of a little girl and her little bear. I love how the author uses some big words in a children's book. My son's vocabulary has grown exponentially!

Entertaining-but maybe not for young toddlers 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I thought the book was entertaining and cute, and an introduction to what goes on at a laundromat. However, I don't think I would get this book for a young todder (under 4) due to the fact that there was one scene where Corduroy is alone in the dark of laudromat, inside a wired laundry cart, and he looks terrified. The picture is very scary and sad. I think it's too much for a little kid. But overall, it's cute, and the ending is good.

Editorial Review:

Don Freeman's classic character, Corduroy, is even more popular today then he was when he first came on the scene over thirty years ago. These favorite titles are ready for another generation of children to love.
