Frightfully funny! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Arriman the Awful, a wizard of great power and darkest evil, has grown bored with his life. Realizing that he needs a son to carry on the cause of darkness and evil, Arriman searches for a suitable wife. Only a witch of the darkest evil will serve, but which witch? The obvious course of action is found, a competition in evil witchcraft, with the witches in formal evening gowns!

Among the witches, though, there is one who nobody expects to win, the pretty and (most shockingly) white witch Belladonna. Alone among the witches, Belladonna has fallen in love with Arriman. When the exceedingly evil Madame Olympia, who has already married and done away with five husbands, Belladonna realizes that she must be blacker than she has ever dreamed of being if she is going to win the contest and save Arriman. But how?

This book is frightfully funny (pardon the pun)! The characters are interesting and funny; the storyline slides along keeping you glued to the pages. This is a great book, suitable for all ages. I highly recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

'This kind of fun will never fail to delight'. - Philip Pullman. 'Find me a witch!' cried Arriman the Awful, feared Wizard of the North. Arriman has decided to marry. His wife must be a witch of the darkest powers - but which witch will she be? To find the most fiendish, he holds a spell-casting competition. Glamorous Madame Olympia performs the terrifying Symphony of Death and conjures up a thousand plague-bearing rats. The magic of gentle Belladonna, the white witch, goes hopelessly wrong. She produces perfumed flowers instead of snakes. And bats roost in her golden hair instead of becoming blood-sucking vampires. Poor Belladonna longs to be an evil enchantress - but how? This is shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal.

Easy to read and good! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I look forward to reading this book every year because the children always love it so. It is a sweet, simple, and yet engrossing tale of a little girl who lived many years ago. She was going out West with her family on a wagon train, when she is separated from them with only her horse, Anna, for company. Anna wants to go off with a white stallion and his wild mares, but she is torn between her desire for freedom and her loyalty to the Gretchen. The white stallion ends up saving the girl's life, and she is happily reunited with her family.

The White Stallion is just right for 7-9 year olds who want something longer than a picture book that is still easy to read. They will also like learning a little about wagon trains and the love between a girl and her horse. It is well-written and illustrated, and I happily recommend it.

a wonderful book, when you read it you know it must be true because of it being so unusual. I wonder if anyone out there has any historical information on this horse, because somewhere I read about this amazing horse in history in the Nebraska, Utah early days, he was talked about by the oldtimers, almost mythical, the stories were passed around the territory, by native americans, settlers . thank you

Carried away from her wagon train in Texas in 1845 by the old mare she is riding, a little girl is befriended by a white stallion.

Editorial Review:

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Writings, by Washington Irving, is part of the Barnes & Noble Classics series, which offers quality editions at affordable prices to the student and the general reader, including new scholarship, thoughtful design, and pages of carefully crafted extras. Here are some of the remarkable features of Barnes & Noble Classics:
New introductions commissioned from today's top writers and scholars Biographies of the authors Chronologies of contemporary historical, biographical, and cultural events Footnotes and endnotes Selective discussions of imitations, parodies, poems, books, plays, paintings, operas, statuary, and films inspired by the work Comments by other famous authors Study questions to challenge the reader's viewpoints and expectations Bibliographies for further reading Indices & Glossaries, when appropriateAll editions are beautifully designed and are printed to superior specifications; some include illustrations of historical interest. Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences—biographical, historical, and literary—to enrich each reader's understanding of these enduring works.

The first great American man of letters, Washington Irving became an international celebrity almost overnight upon publication of The Sketch Book in 1820, which included the short stories “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle.” These two tales remain his crowning achievement, but in addition to being a writer of short stories, Irving was also an acclaimed essayist, travel writer, biographer, and historian.

This volume showcases Irving’s best work across a variety of genres, including whimsical newspaper articles about New York society, the theater, and contemporary fashions; charming travel pieces that evocatively weave together history and legend; humorous stories and satirical essays from The Sketch-Book and its sequel Bracebridge Hall, and excerpts from A History of New York, considered the first great American book of comic literature. The author’s success enabled him to earn a living by writing alone, unheard of for an American at that time.

Irving’s energetic, often tongue-in-cheek prose style, together with his ability to blend roguish satire, pathos, and picturesque description, had a profound influence upon the popular culture of his day. His writings have become a cornerstone in the foundation of the American literary tradition.

Peter Norberg received his Ph.D. from Rice University in 1998. Since 1997 he has been Assistant Professor of English at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. A specialist on the writers associated with the transcendentalist movement, he has written and lectured extensively on Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, and the critical reaction to transcendentalism in the writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe.

If you love ballet then you will love this book 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I am an x ballerina and now my young daughter dances. She can't get enough of theis book and reads it over and over again. We loved the illustrations so much, that we wrote to Ms. Isadora and asked if she would sell us a piece of art from the book! The book simply but thoroughly explains ballet to a young child but to a novice as well. I am just thrilled that such a book is available!

Go Lili Go 5 out of 5 stars.

I just loved this book which I shared with my students at my ballet school. We had a joyous time going over every detail and I found it very helpful as a learning tool as well. I will give it as a Christmas present to my own children, who dance too. I think the illustrations were right on and I am so pleased with the book.

Editorial Review:

Lili loves to dance, and dreams of becoming a ballerina. In her ballet class she does stretches, works at the barre, and learns the five classical dance positions that are the basics for the roles she may dance when she is older. Enhanced by delicate watercolor illustrations, this lovely book is the perfect introduction for boys and girls who want to learn more about ballet. Full color.

Very creative!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book was really good! I was waiting for the next Harry Potter book to come out when I saw this book. I was really glad I got it. It wasn't just filler. I really liked the way Eva Ibbotson made a whole different world, but it still felt like that world might actually be there. In Island of the Aunts, she shows how important it is to conserve nature and it's wonders. She was able to give that message without being depressing, like other books sometimes are.

Amazingly hilarious! 4 out of 5 stars.

Once you pass by these kinds of books, you might think to yourself that you would never try to read them until you had absolutely nothing left to do. That was the same for me. I sat one day staring at my shelf of books, and decided that I would read it, but if I thought the first page would be pure torture, I would just drop it. Five minutes later, I sat with my eyes glued to the book, laughing at paragraphs with clusters of witty humor. It seemed like I was tumbling through a dimension where common sense hailed magic, and where good always taught a lesson to evil. Don't worry; you'll see Eva Ibbotson's stories unfold right before your own eyes once you experience this book.

Editorial Review:

Whether searching for a lost prince, having a contest for the wickedest witch, or caring for an oceanful of fantastic creatures, Eva Ibbotson's characters are sure to enchant. Now fans can immerse themselves in her world, a place of endless amusement and adventure.

Another Great Isadora Book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Another great Isadora book to add to our private library. I am so impressed by her capturing of reality for young children. I share these books at the school where I teach in Chinatown in New York City. My son, 4, really gets in to all her books because he loves her illustrations. Keep them coming!

Editorial Review:

This companion to the beloved Peekaboo Morning takes children through the evening of the same adorable toddler, who plays peekaboo with everyone from his grandparents to his puppy, until it’s finally time to snuggle into bed with his blankie. Visual clues leading into each page turn, the repetition of the phrase “Peekaboo, I see . . .” and Rachel Isadora’s gorgeous illustrations combine to make a wonderful read aloud for young children.

Eva Ibbotson is just pure magical. Dial-A-Ghost not only makes you laugh and slap your knee, but it also teaches valuable life lessons. Read it. That's all I can say.

Dial-a-Ghost 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book because it's about GHOSTS. The author of this book writes many ghost stories such as The Secret of Platform13 or The Great Ghost Rescue. I would compare this book to the Scary Stories Series. The author puts several interesting pictures in the book. The character I like the best is the dad of the Watson's family. I like him because he's a doctor and because he works for the navy. A really good part of the story is when Oliver sees Adie's hands go threw the closet door.

I think lots of people should read this book because if they don't
Believe in ghosts, after they read this book they'll believe in them. If I had to give this book a rating I would give it ***** stars because of all the time the author succeeds in making it scary and tries to make the pictures look good. Another good thing is all the good words the author uses in it. A scene that is very good is when the mom of the Watson's family is about to get her daughter and...Boom! ... a bomb falls right on the house and every single one of the family dies. I think any person who likes scary stuff should read DIAL-A-GHOST.

Editorial Review:

The Dial-a-Ghost Agency finds good homes for ghosts. And Fulton and Frieda Snodde-Brittle are looking for a few frightening ghosts to "accidentally" scare their young cousin and heir, Oliver, to death. The ladies at the Dial-a-Ghost Agency have the perfect match: the Shriekers, two bloodstained and bickering horrors. But thanks to a mix-up at the agency, the Wilkinsons, a kind family of ghosts, arrive instead. Can they put a stop to the Snodde-Brittles' schemes before it's too late?

Editorial Review:

Drawing on a true story, an award-winning author and illustrator present a picture-book tribute to the beauty and mystery of the ocean, and to the mesmerizing creatures that may frolic there.

It came from the sea, from the lonely sea,
It came from the glittering sea.

In a small Massachusetts fishing village in August of 1817, dozens of citizens claimed to have seen an enormous sea serpent swimming off the coast. Terrified at first, the people of Gloucester eventually became quite accustomed to their new neighbor. Adventure seekers came from miles around to study the serpent and aggressively hunt it down, but the creature eluded capture. The Gloucester sea serpent was then, and remains now, a complete mystery.

Reviving the rhythms and tone of a traditional sea chanty, M.T. Anderson recounts this exhilarating sea adventure through the eyes of a little boy who secretly hopes for the serpent's survival. The author's captivating verse is paired with Bagram Ibatoulline's luminous paintings, created in the spirit of nineteenth-century New England maritime artists.

Perfect for Aspiring Dancers of All Ages 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Author illustrator Rachel Isadora's Ballet ABC book is as magically elegant as the dance itself. Each letter introduces a ballet term. Each drawing illuminates the term in graceful pastels. Isadora once studied at the School of Ballet and danced with the Boston Ballet. Her passion for the dance lives on in her books. Don't miss the glossary after letter Z for Zipper: it helps the reader pronounce unfamiliar phrases and elaborates on word origins. For example, P for Pas de chat (pah duh SHAH) is a French phrase meaning "step of the cat." T for Tutu, a costume made of several layers of tulle, was originally an underskirt worn under heavier fabric. My preschool daughter adores this book, along with Ballerina! by Peter Sis. On Your Toes will surely win applause from your own aspiring dancer.

Editorial Review:

A Ballet Company dances ... across the pages of this sparkling picture book, inviting you behind the scenes and illuminating ballet terms from A to Z.

A Ballet Company dances ... for the very youngest of dancers as well as for ballet fans of all ages.
