It's a crying shame... 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 20 people found this review helpful.

...these books are not known in this country. I, for one, brought my Moomin book with me from the former Soviet Union, and I fully intend to indoctrinate my future children into the Moomin Religion (even if they will have to learn Russian just for that). Tove Jahsson (who passed away last year, sadly) created a wonderful world, full of adorable and memorable characters.

The Moomins are...well, G-d knows what they are. They are little hyppopotamus-looking cute things that walk on their hind legs, live in the picturesquee little valley (and in houses, of course), do all the things that humans do (or that humans do in children's imagination) and wear hats. Sometimes. In fact, there is even a story about a magic hat somewhere. But I digress.

Muumi-Troll, the protagonist, is your average kid. Or a teenager. He has a Muumi-Mother, and Muumi-Father, and two best friends: Sniff (who looks like a rat and is a terrible coward--but always manages to overcome it at the last possible moment) and Snusmumrik (who looks like a duck and is a Traveler). He has a love interest, Froeken (Miss) Snork (Snorks are similar to Moomins, except that their color changes together with their mood), who has an obnoxious brother, you guessed it, Snork. There are also Hemul, who, like all Hemulen, wears his aunt's old dress (don't ask), and the Muskrat (I think that's what it is). There are predicaments and dangers and wonerful adventures.

The Moomins are known--and beloved--in all of teh world, from their native Finland, to Russia to Japan. Hopefully, the States will come around at some point--and Harry Potter (no offense, I love HP) will tremble in his shoes.

Editorial Review:

The magic of Tove Jansson's bestselling "Moomin" picture book has been re-crafted in English to launch "Sort of Children's Classics" (for readers from four to infinity). Follow Moomin's adventures in verse, through amazing full colour, cut-out pages as he helps Mymble find her little sister My.

Editorial Review:

Annie's mother has special powers.

Annie's mother is a master at drawing out secrets.

Annie's mother is the one and only, the irresistible Madam Caterina.

Annie and her mother come to Peach Hill, the latest in a string of towns where Mama sets herself up as a spiritual adviser who can put people in contact with the "dearly departed." Fifteen-year-old Annie is Mama's invisible secret weapon—she gathers important information about clients by pretending to be an idiot. After all, people will say anything in front of an idiot.

But Annie isn't invisible, she's smart as a whip, and she longs to break out of this role and into a real life with friends and school. Annie may be under Mama's spell—but not for long.

Lost in translation no longer 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

After hearing Sendak speak of the tragic fate that has befallen the fairy tale, I immediately went online in search of the Juniper Tree collection, a seventies-era translation of Grimm's fairy tales that professed to be true to the originals.

According to Sendak, modern adaptations of fairy tales lack the vigor and violence of the originals, which themselves were adaptation of the spoken-word. Call it Disney-fication, but new translations seemed to candy-coat old tales into generic rubbish. Sendak said that he took on this commission in order to rejuvenate the fairy-tale genre. And I can only find success in the venture. The new translation adds spice to fairy tales that I have heard countless times, in addition to adding many more obscure fairy tales to a reader's collection. And Sendak's beautiful black and white illustrations certainly don't hurt the package. His characteristic drawings add life and excitement to the written word.

Definitely get this copy instead of any cheesy new version of a fairy tale. It's not as violent/different from normal fairy tale editions as I expected, but the change is significant enought to have warranted this translation. And sure, there isn't a Sendak illustration on every page, but kids need something to look forward to in a book, don't they?

Editorial Review:

A one-volume hardcover edition for the 30th anniversary

Originally published as a two-volume set thirty years ago, The Juniper Tree is distinguished first by the selection of stories. Lore Segal and Maurice Sendak have jointly culled 27 from
the 210 in the complete collection, and their contents page presents a fascinating critical statement. The translations are another distinguishing quality of the Segal/Sendak edition. Both translators have been painstakingly faithful to the German texts; they have not cut, “retold,” or bowdlerized. In addition, Segal and Jarrell bring to their renderings of Grimm the grace and precision that are characteristic of their own original prose. This must-have edition for every home library is jacketed and cloth-bound and has a bookmark ribbon.

Redwall Journal Attractive, yet a Bit Disappointing 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Brian Jacques's books have long been popular with young readers, incluidng myself. Now he invites fans to become the Recorder of Redwall Abbey themselves with this journal, and encourages readers to write about secret thoughts and dreams for "you are the recorder now."
While this is a welcome treat from Jacques's and a fun insperation to start writing, the journal is spiral bound and not of the best quality...

A Redwall Masterpeice. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Once again, Brian Jacques has created another wonderful window of opportunity for young fans, (like me!), to express there feelings about the series. A clever cover portrays Redwall Abbey in perfect harmony.

Editorial Review:

For years, Brian Jacques' words have been winning children everywhere. Now the legendary creator of the Redwall epic turns the tables, inviting his readers to become writers with a journal of their very own. Echoing the times of Redwall, this special book features a velvety cover, a die cut window, and spot art throughout. And with a quote from Brian himself, young writers will be inspired to fill the pages. A must for every Redwall enthusiast, and for writers of all ages.

Once again Brian Jacques through his creatures has shown us that courage, devotion, honesty and integrity are not outdated. This is a good read for adults as well as children.

Wonderful and Professional recordings! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful rendering of Eulalia. They've used different voices for each character instead of the single monotonous narrators voice. It's got music, colour characters and vivid imagery.

Well worth every single penny!

What do you teach your children? 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 25 people found this review helpful.

Lets see... Betsy Ross did not make the first flag.

...George Washington may or may not have
a) chopped down a cherry tree,
b)thrown a coin across a river,
c) been a great leader.

...George Bush may or may not have told a lie about Iraq.
...All computer programmers may or may not have souls the size of a mouse's.

What do you teach your children?

I cannot believe people are squabbling over whether Chief S* (*for those who may or may not want to use the Anglicized name) in fact said something like or unlike the lovely verse in this book.

This book is for young children. If you are interested in presenting profound and beautiful words to your kids along with interesting pictures, both of which might very well incite conversation BUY THIS BOOK. If you want guaranteed facts, read them the newspaper. No Wait. That won't do either. Then read them MCSE Guides and Cram Course material. Raise children who think XP is a good idea.

Really folks, get a life and remember the target market for this book is not historians. REMEMBER that to a 4 to 8 year old you CANNOT subtract a larger number from a smaller one.

Heck, I read my children books about talking mice. This is a lovely book. Five Stars.

Editorial Review:

"How can you buy the sky? How can you own the rain and the wind?" So begin the moving words attributed to a great American Indian chief--Chief Seattle--over 100 years ago. They are words that eloquently capture the central belief of Native Americans: that this earth and every creature on it is sacred. It is this belief that inspired Susan Jeffers' extraordinary full-color paintings.

guess how much i love this book 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

we have two children who are four and six years old, probably around the same age of your children if you are looking at the prospect of buying this book. born and raised in manhattan, i happen to be bilingual and have been teaching our children spanish from birth -- no easy task but an enriching one. Out of all the books i've purchased -- many which are duds with poor illustration and content -- adivina cuanto te quiero is by far their favorite spanish day and bedtime story. i thank the publisher and that adorable long eared bunny for making my task so much easier and pleasurable!

One of the warmest books for children 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

In my house, my children have well over one hundred books, but this is one of their favorites. It has humour, tendernes, and, above all, shows the children "How much I love you" with a little of humour. The story and the pictures are simply beatiful. When I kiss my children, saying goodnight, after reading this book, there`s allways a special kind of loving and relaxation in them. I definitely give it a 5 stars, must buy.

Touching story 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Maybe because I had a grandfather that was my buddy, or maybe because the story is cheery and well written--my 5-year-old girl and I loved reading this book together. And now she wants to try fishing with her grandpa. But she says she'll steer clear of the worms too.

Editorial Review:

It is summer on the lake, and Sara wants to fish with her granddad and his special fishing buddy. She promises that she will keep real quiet so she won’t scare the fish, that she can row a boat without making it turn in circles, and that she can bait a hook . . . maybe. Granddad is convinced and they take a boat out on the water together. There, Sara meets the best fisherman on the lake, learns all of her granddad’s fishing secrets, and creates some of her very own.

Lyrical with touches of spot-on humor, this story captures the fun and loving relationship between a granddaughter and her grandfather, and their interaction with the natural world. Glowingly radiant artwork brings their relationship to life as Sara learns that sometimes the best fishing buddy is not always who you expect!

Unthinkable 1 out of 5 stars.
17 of 27 people found this review helpful.

I am a thirteen year old reader who is simply outraged. Having not read this book, I suppose that I shouldn't be writing this, but I hope you read it anyway. To rewrite such a marvelous book as Hitty is simply scandalous. There is absolutely no point in destroying a masterpiece. The oringinal book is so rich with character. Why should we need to "update" a book about a doll that was already old-fasioned from the original publishing date?
On principle, I would never read this book.

Editorial Review:

Based on the 1930 Newberry Award Winner

On a cold Maine night in 1829, an old peddler carved a small doll out of a piece of mountain ash wood. Her name was Hitty and she was no ordinary doll.

Hitty's first owner, Phoebe Preble, takes her from Boston to India. From the hands of Phoebe Preble, Hitty travels on with a snake charmer, a Civil War soldier, a riverboat captains daughter, and a former slave. Along the way she meets presidents and painters, relating each adventure in vivid detail.

Rachel Field's masterful novel Hitty: Her First Hundred Years was first published in 1929; it was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1930. In this full-color adaptation, the award-winning team of Rosemary Wells and Susan Jeffers has taken Hitty down from the shelf and dusted her off for a new generation of younger readers. The short, fast-paced chapters and pictures on every spread bring life to this beloved classic, and make it perfect for sharing with the whole family.

I like Olie! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I like this book very much, but it's not as much of a favorite for the 2 year olds that I bought it for. They enjoy the board books more. I think part of the problem is the funky type that the words are written in. The other part may be that I'm willing to let younger hands be rougher with board pages than I am with paper pages. I'm a big fan of Olie.

Olie turns huge! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I love this book. I love it because it teaches children a lesson. It teaches them that you will grow up some day and it does not matter when. I recommend this book for the ages 4-7 because they will fall in love with it.

Big,Bigger,Biggest, Olie! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The story Big Time Olie is about Olie who wants to get bigger because he isn't the right size for anything. Olie uses the shrink-and-grow-a-later to make him bigger. The problem is that he makes him self to big. Finally, his parents come and shrink him back to size. Olie learns he should be happy with his size. I think this is a great book for kids of all ages. I recommend this book to anyone who loves Rolie Polie Olie and his adventures.

Editorial Review:

"I'm a little bit bigger, not a little bit smaller. I'm a little bit taller—I'm growing Rolie up!"

If Rolie Polie Olie grows a little every day, when will he be big enough?
