Sing it, Baby! 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 28 people found this review helpful.

The Little Drummer Boy by Ezra Jack Keats is a beautifully illustrated book with the words to the popular Christmas song. Each page contains only one or two lines of the song and so is perfect for younger children. The song is about a little boy who is told to bring a gift for the birth of Jesus, but he replies "Baby Jesus, I am a poor boy, too" and so he plays his drum for him instead. This is a simple story about giving from the heart. Singing the words is a perfect way to interest a reluctant child in books and also perfect to coax reluctant dads (or mums) to sing to their children. The music is written out at the end of the story if you aren't familiar with the tune but it would be easier to listen out for it at Christmas. This book is one the most requested in our household and, of course, we sing it all year long.

Editorial Review:

A procession travels to Bethlehem, bringing gifts for the newborn baby Jesus. The little drummer boy comes along, although he is too poor to bring a present fit for a king. Instead, he plays a song on his drum for the Christ Child. Within the little drummer boy's seemingly simple gift lies the true spirit of Christmas. Ezra Jack Keats' vivid, jewel-toned artwork perfectly illustrates this classic holiday carol. Music for the song appears at the back of the book.

"Keats evocatively portrays this story." -Publishers Weekly

Details kids 4-8 don't need to be concerned about 1 out of 5 stars.

I was very disappointed in this book. I, guess, as a musician I was hoping for more emphasis on music and not twelve pages on bathing, showering, shaving, putting on underwear...well, you get the idea. It's the first Reading Rainbow book I have not liked at all. I had planned to give this to a friend's children but I defintely will not.

Editorial Review:

"It is almost Friday night. Outside, the dark is getting darker," and here and there around the city ninety-two men and thirteen women are getting dressed to go to work. First they bathe and put on their underwear. Then they don special black-and-white apparel. Then when the one hundred and five people are completely ready, each takes a musical instrument and travels to midtown. There, at 8:30 tonight, they will work together: playing.

In these pages Karla Kuskin and Marc Simont combine their talents to give us a delightful and unusual inside view of one way an orchestra prepares.

One Of The Last Of The Good Nancy Drews 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This review concerns the original 1953 edition and the revised 1969 edition. Nancy goes on the trail of the ruthless Velvet Gang, bold criminals that steal valuable jewels and art from the homes of wealthy people while the owners are throwing parties. The gang members use velvet masks to conceal their identities. This was a very good book that kept me interested from begining to end. The book is well-written (the original, at least) and is loaded with action. George is kidnapped, as are Nancy and Bess and Nancy is constantly coming face-to-face with the gang. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I highly recommend it to all fans of Nancy Drew.

The amazing review of The Clue of the Velvet Mask 5 out of 5 stars.

I enjoyed this book. I have always liked Nancy Drew books because they are easy to understand. While you are reading this book you can expect Nancy to solve the crime. You can also expect her to get in some sort of trouble. I conclude that if you are a Nancy Drew fan, you will like this particular book.

Another Winning Nancy Drew Book 5 out of 5 stars.

As always, Carolyn Keene comes through with another winning Nancy Drew book! The pages will fly as you race to the thrilling conclusion!

Editorial Review:

From the author/illustrator of The Scrambled States of America, here is a fun-filled introduction to teeth."Before the principal's announcements, will you all please stand and recite our pledge: 'I pledge allegiance to this mouth and to the dentist who takes care of us. And to the gums on which we stand, strong and healthy, with toothbrushes and toothpaste for all.'"It's time for tooth school and Dr. Flossman is excited to meet the incoming class of 32--eight incisors, four canines, eight premolars, and twelve molars, including the four wisdom teeth. There's just so much to learn--from brushing and flossing to dentin and pulp to every student's nightmare: tooth decay!Best read with a toothbrush in hand, this hilarious book is full of interesting facts (for instance, George Washington's teeth were not made of wood, despite popular belief) and a classroom full of quirky characters. Young readers will laugh their way to a better appreciation for those pearly whites that beckon them to brush. And from there it's just a short hop to flossing.

The Moss Covered Mansion 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

The Nancy Drew Collection is incredible! As a collector, I enjoy each of the stories. I love the older originals in particular. They contain more substance and much better writing. I feel the newer ones read like comic books. The older ones challenge us at times to pick up a dictionary. Also, these now make great history books as we read about chains that were put on the tires after a rain because most the roads were dirt. We read of a time of typewriters, telegraphs, telephones (no cellphones)and in the earlier ones no mention of television! Some people are offended because of the so called racial slurs. I don't see anything racial about it. This is our history and these kind of folks did and still do exist whether you are speaking about how black folks speak or folks from lower class neighborhoods may behave. These books are true to what is real. There are crooks in poor neighborhoods! And how many poor but good folks has Nancy helped? Black folks often did service jobs. My own mother had a black cleaning lady. I see nothing wrong with that. Any person regardless of color or race can be anything they choose to be in America. Nancy is just real (outside of the fact that her heroistic feats may be a bit more than the average girl could attaint to). We can not condemn her for being born with a silver spoon. We can certainly learn from her as she was brought up to work hard and respect others despite her wealth; and she even attends church on Sunday! Nancy is the empitomy of good values and love for others. I hope Nancy is around for many, many more years for young people to enjoy. I grew up with Nancy and as a collector, she is still my best girl.

you'll relish this one 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

As a child I delighted in the Nancy Drew series, and I've re-read the books at various times since. "The Secret in the Old Attic" is a well-plotted, satisfying thriller in which Nancy finds the manuscripts for some songs which will help to restore the fortunes of her elderly friend, Mr. March, and his young granddaughter. Nancy's chums, plump and frilly Bess and her tomboyish cousin, George, help Nancy in her investigations. Hannah Gruen is on hand to provide cocoa and comfort. Nancy sits down at the piano and plays some of the songs, demonstrating yet another of her fine abilities.

All-American girl Nancy shines as she solves the mystery and brings the criminals to justice. Young readers will be entranced. Highly recommended.

One Of The Best Of The Series 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This review concerns the original 1944 edition and the revised 1970 edition which closely follows the plot of the original, with a few small changes. Elderly Mr. March approachs Nancy seeking her help to find his deceased son's unpublished sheet music. Mr. March desperately needs the money to care for his granddaughter, Susan. Unfortunately, a thief has been secretly entering the March house and stealing whatever songs that he can find and publishing them himself. I really enjoyed this book. In my opinion, it is the second or third best of the series (I can't decide between it and The Bungalow Mystery; The Hidden Staircase is my #1). I found it to be well-written, highly descriptive, and had quite a bit of action. The climax of the book, when Nancy finally finds the music and is confronted by the thief, is perhaps the best scene of the series for its originality, excitement and suspense. The only thing that I did not like about this book, was how the thief was caught because Nancy had pretty much nothing to do with actually capturing him.

Editorial Review:

First published in 1944, this mystery finds Nancy searching for some unpublished musical manuscripts which she believes are hidden in the dark, cluttered attic of a rundown mansion.

My favorite Nancy Drew book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love all Nancy Drew books but this was my favorite! It was so interesting I couldn't put it down! I read it when I was little and I could read it over and over!

What A Dull Book 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Nancy receives a moonstone as a gift from an anonymous person. Mr. Drew enlists Nancy to help him with his latest case. The Bowens, a missionary couple, have recently returned from Africa and have been looking for their granddaughter without success. The girl went to live with her other grandmother in the town of Deep River after the deaths of her parents when she was a baby. However, the grandmother died shortly after that and all trace of the girl has been lost. When the girls arrive in Deep River they see Moonstone Castle in the distance and decide to explore it. This was a very boring book with a dull mystery and almost zero action. The summary in the book suggests that the castle is haunted, but that is never really mentioned in the book itself. Nancy doesn't do any brilliant detective work to find the missing girl, instead she basically stumbles upon her. I'd only recommend getting this book to complete your set.

Brrrrr, I need some warmth after reading this!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was excellent. I found it a refreshing change from traditional Koontz books. The imagery he promotes through his words literally left me chilled...in a good way, however. I placed myself in the situation of being stuck in bitter cold on an iceberg in the North Pole, and it creeps me out. I just imagine the bone-chilling weather, and it brings the story alive. A great story recommended to all of the avid Dean Koontz readers out there...be sure to include this oldie in your reading!

Incredibly Suspenseful! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I honestly could not put this book down from start to finish. This book was a bit different than many of Koontz's books in that it had no horror or no bizarre characters that he writes so well. Instead, it was just flat out non-stop suspense from beginning to end. Wow! It really was incredible.

I love Dean Koontz, but this book surprised me in a good way. I was just blown away.

It is definitely worth reading. Give it a try, and if you like this one, read Intensity by Dean Koontz next.

Get a clue with Nancy Drew! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is totally awesome! Nancy Drew is one of my fave detectives of all time. This was the first Nancy Drew book I bought and I liked it so much. This book will teach you some of the basics of sleuthing. From trying to analyze finger prints to creating and cracking codes this book has it. But the only disappointment I had with this book is that some of the topics are so limited. But still it's a great keepsake for all of you nancy Drew fans!

Nifty Little Addition to Nancy Drew Books and Movies 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a neat little book. The format as a Detective Club run, of course, by Nancy herself, in which she shares sleuth know-how with her friends and club-members. It's filled with serious and not so serious detective tech. I can't wait until my granddaughter gets old enough to sit still for a reading, or to read it herself! Course, one of the payoffs for me was getting a snapshop (from the web) of the latest Nancy Drew movie heroine reading from this very book.

Editorial Review:

Nancy Drew loves to share her tips for solving mysteries with the Detective Club, a group of her friends from River Heights. Get the scoop on Nancy’s sleuthing secrets—like what your handwriting says about your personality, how to identify fingerprints, and even how to catch a ghost! Get a clue with Nancy Drew!

An Exciting Fast-paced Mystery 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This review concerns the original 1948 edition as well as the revised 1967 edition which is a shorter version of the original. A widow seeks Nancy's help after she is robbed of a fortune in jewels. It seems the woman's deceased husband's spirit instructed her to bury the jewels in the forest to prevent them from being stolen from her home. Nancy is certain that the woman is the victim of a clever group of swindlers. Her investigation puts her into contact with several young women who are being cheated out of their hard-earned paychecks and leads her to abandoned Blackwood Hall. There, Nancy encounters an eerie, glowing ghost that inhabits the mansion. This is definately one of the best Nancy Drew books. The mystery is interesting and the story is fast-paced and well-written with lots of action. I really enjoyed the middle chapters, particularly the first two times Nancy investigates Blackwood Hall and meets the ghost. The whole book is great and a must-read for fans of the series.
