Nancy Drew for 2nd / 3rd grade 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

My daughter just started second grade and she is already on the third book in this series. They are funny, well written and perfect for her reading level (she reads at her grade level) I love that fact that she is getting an introduction to the Nancy Drew characters, as I loved this series when I was a girl and in a couple of years she can read all my old Nancy Drew books herself. I highly recommend this series.

Super Nancy solves a great mystery 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is about a girl who invites Nancy to her house for a sleepover birthday party. The next morning the girl's favorite doll is gone, but she doesn't tell her parents. Then her Dad asks her to bring her doll to a tea party the next day. Can Nancy find the doll in time? Read the book to find out. This book is good for an 8-year-old because Nancy is eight years old in this book.

Editorial Review:

Eight-year-old Nancy Drew has her first case to crack! Can you help?

Nancy and her two best friends, George and Bess, are so excited! They have been invited to Deirdre's sleepover party! There will be pizza, cake, and even a pajama fashion show. But the most exciting thing is that the party has a City Girls doll theme. All of the guests are bringing their dolls with them!

But then Deirdre's City Girls doll -- Hollywood Heather -- goes missing. Is her sleepover ruined? Or is there a detective in the room who can make sense of this mystery?

Nice Copy of Original Book 4 out of 5 stars.

I did have to get this third party because it wasn't available when I went to order it. I am glad to add it to my collection. Putting aside what is obviously wrong with it (the derogatory portrayal of the African-American servant) this is a pretty good mystery story. It is much different than the seventies version I had read before, not just the language, but even the storyline changed, with both the elimination and addition of characters. My only problem is the big gold seal on the front of the dust jacket. If this is supposed to be an accurate reproduction of the original book, it should not be "defaced" with a seal stamped on the front advertising "The Originals." I would have preferred that be put inside the book. I did enjoy the internal advertisements of other series in the end pages.

The Hidden Staircase 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was for my grandaughter. I read it before giving it to her and found it to be very entertaining and appropriate for my 8-year old grandaughter. She is reading it now and enjoying the book very much.

AN absolute necessity for the Eloise lover 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for my granddaughter, and almost couldn't give it to her because I wanted to keep it for myself! It has the traditional Eloise stories, which are great, but the real jewel here is the back section of the book. In this section you'll find photos of many of the Eloise products through the years, and a lovely history of the little girl and how she grew to be America's most precocious, most lovable six year old.

Editorial Review:

Here is everything you need to know about

Eloise

who is celebrating her 50th anniversary though she is still not a day over six. In the front of this book we have printed the original Eloise story & pictures and in the back of it there are sketches and stories by Mr. Hilary Knight (the Artist) and photographs of Miss Kay Thompson when she was young and fabulous and rawther like Eloise and absolutely loads of informationthat you simply cawn't cawn't cawn't get anywhere else. Here's the thing:

Whether you are just about to fall in love with Eloise or have already baked her a cake you ought to have this book. (Charge it please and thank you very much.)

don't give up! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book had a huge impact on me as a child.

Everyone told the boy his carrot seed would not come up. Even the adults. My reaction was this: adults know everything, so why is this boy still trying? I was truly surprised when the carrot seed sprouted, and I clapped and cheered. My next reaction was this: maybe *I* shouldn't give up, even when other people tell me to. This is one of the greatest lessons I've ever learned.

I read this book to my own kids now, and they love it as much as I do.

the carrot seed 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a wonderful portrayal of perserverence and faith. Delightful to young and old!

Editorial Review:

Everyone is certain it won't grow, but a little boy remains confident inhis carrot seed's potential. Watch as he carefully plants, tends to, and eventually harvests a carrot whose size is in direct proportion to his unflappable faith in it.

Great read for all ages 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If there is a main character for the book it is Misselthwaite Manor. If there is a present theme is that we (metaphorically speaking) can all unlock our secret garden and make it grow and make a world which we can invite others into.

The story examines a series of characters from Mary Lennox, Dicken Sowersby, Martha Sowersby and of course Colin Craven as they find their lives revolving around the gardens and the moores of a place located in Yorkshire England as they find 'the magic' of the place managing to provoke life changing lessons for all of them.

Like her other book 'The Little Princess', the book starts off in India, and like 'Little Princess', Mary suffers the death of her parents and finds herself trapped in England but that is where the novels part ways. Instead we are immersed into a world of robins, flowers, gardens and shimmering fog and springtime activities. Mistress Mary is cast among a world she barely understand but must learn to survive in. She unlocks mysteries, gets new friends and changes the life of another -- Colin forever.

Both my daughter and I enjoyed the novel until the very end where it decays a bit into endless exposition as Colin begins his scientific experiments. The ending itself almost leaves open a sequel as several character issues find themselves a bit hanging in a lurch but the focus is not on any one single character -- mistress Mary pretty much drops out of the novel halfway through it. It is on the world around us and how it can change us if we let it. We all have beautiful secret gardens in all of us if we are willing to find them and share them with others and in the world of today, that's a great message.

Editorial Review:

One of the most beloved children's books of all time and the inspiration for a feature film, a television miniseries, and a Broadway musical, The Secret Garden is the best-known work of Frances Hodgson Burnett. In this unforgettable story, three children find healing and friendship in a magical forgotten garden on the haunting Yorkshire moors.

A Waste of Time 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I think the book The View from Saturday was a waste of time for the writer. The theme was not so interesting and the characters had no personality. It is not a book I recommend to people.

This book was confusing and did not explain the story so well. On every other page there was a new scene. In the book the author did not explain when the characters went to the academic bowls. Some of the characters did not have a personality although Juilan was my favorite because of his differences. He is different because on the first day of school he wore knee socks and shorts and to the other characters and school that was weird. Another part I thought was a little strange was the theme. If you drink tea with your friends your personality will change.

The book is not worth reading.

Editorial Review:

Did Mrs. Olinsky choose the four members of the sixth grade Academic Bowl Team, or did they choose her--and one another? Four stories-within-in-a-story, interspersed with the ongoing narrative of the team's triumphant march to the state championship, introduce each member of the team in his own her own voice, and bring the dynamics of the group into focus .

Editorial Review:

A reproduction of the first edition of THE SIGN OF THE TWISTED CANDLE, as it was originally published in 1933. For readers who met Nancy Drew before 1959, this is the book they remember.

they are just as good as they were when I was 10 years old!!! Nancy and her convertible!!! :-)

Strong and determined young female characters, very rare for the 1930's. Excellent female role models. 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was in elementary school most of the boys read books in the Hardy Boys series and a lot of the girls read books in the Nancy Drew series. While I have read many of the Hardy Boys books, this is the first Nancy Drew book that I have read. I spent a lot of brain cell electricity contrasting the two series as I went through the pages. In the Hardy Boys series their father is a detective and in the Nancy Drew series her father is a lawyer. Nancy has two best chums, the plump Bess and the masculine George. They go everywhere together sharing adventures and concerns.
While there is some boy interest in this book, the girls do not fawn over the fact that an attractive male their age is present. That is an aspect of the story that was impressive. The girls are business-like, trying to solve the problems at hand and determine who is guilty of what. The crime is the apparent arson destruction of a house owned by a wealthy man who has made a lot of enemies. Nancy and her friends are there when the house explodes and Nancy sees a man fleeing the scene. He is the prime suspect, as he is an inventor whose invention was stolen by the owner of the house. Since the owner has disappeared, there is a suspicion of murder.
One common thread in this book and the Hardy Boys series is that the local police are incompetent simpletons. They start with a simple theory and refuse to deviate from it, even when it appears to be wrong. Of course, Nancy and her pals solve the mystery and the innocent man is spared a jail sentence. Nancy and her friends are also portrayed as very good-hearted, as they befriend a young girl and her mother who are obviously poverty-stricken.
While reading this book, I kept the historical context in mind. This book was written in 1932, a time when women were still very much considered the "weaker sex." Yet, Nancy drives skillfully and generally avoids accidents, the men are the ones who drive foolishly and recklessly. The girls are all portrayed as being competent and capable, not shrinking from the prospect of danger. Nancy's father is portrayed as being supportive of her endeavors and makes very little attempt to shelter her from the nastiness of the world. Strong female characters were a rare thing in the literature of the 1930's, a fact that makes this book a trailblazer in many respects.

Editorial Review:

Nancy uses a lost diary to exonerate an innocent prisoner.

Things Every Child Should Know 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a child I read these wonderful stories, read them to my child and now he's reading them to his children. How can you get through life not knowing how the Elephant Got His Trunk or how the Camel Got His Hump. In these days of uncertainty, these questions beg to be answered. Even now, and I'm 60, I can quote passages from this book to unenlightened friends and have gotten some of them to read this to themselves and grand children. For so many years, Kipling was out of favor, it's nice that a new generation of children are reading these wonderful stories.

Just So Stories for Little Children 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Very poor quality. There are symbols and characters in the text. Also, there are picture captions inside the text with no pictures. There are page numbers and the book title in the middle of the text. The first letter beginning each story is missing. No stars, sorry, even though I had to give them one because the computer won't let you do it otherwise. I did read these to the children, but wow, it was hard figuring out what to leave out and what to leave in because the pictures (that aren't there) have captions in the text. Really bad.

A collection of the well-known stories, including "How the Whale Got His Throat," "The Elephant's Child," and "The Butterfly that Stamped."

Great book... terrible narrator 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I love Dean Koontz and always have, and while this is a great book the narration is TERRIBLE. I'm not sure why they'd choose a narrator that has a lisp, but they did. So now I can't concentrate on the story, because I'm too busy listening to the narrator lisp. I'd recommend reading this book as opposed to listening to it!

Could've been 4 stars, but... 3 out of 5 stars.

This is the 4th Koontz book I've read, and I think it is the best Koontz book I've read yet. The monster was very far-fetched, but I liked the characters and much of the story.

a great beginning, but nothing then on. 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I had high hopes from the description in the book's jacket, but after a riveting beginning the reveal of the "villain" left me astonished and quite disappointed. The rest of the book was cheesy, bordering on humorous and just not up to Koontz standard. Find a different one.
