Super Reader 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Rather than being raised by apes, it is wolves that fulfill for the family role for the young boy Mowgli after he escapes being tiger snacks.

Shere Khan will continue to be his antagonist, and he will gain advice and assistance from other jungle denizens as he grows to manhood.

This also has the pretty cool heroic mongoose tale Rikki-Tikki-Tavi.

Review of Jungle Book BARNES & NOBLE Version 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Since it appears that Amazon is combining the reviews for several versions of this book under one, I want to stipulate that I've read the Barnes & Nobel Classic version.

Actually comprised of 2 books, The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book, this is a collection of stories surrounding the jungles of India. A central character is Mowgli - a boy left in the jungle when his parents are frightened away and who is raised by wolves. His adventures as he grows up in the jungle are intriguing, frightening, enchanting, and certainly adventurous! This is NOT Disney! The way Kipling presents this material, it is easy to suspend belief and one could believe a boy was raised amongst the animals.

There are a host of other stories in each books that have nothing whatsoever to do with Mowgli, and that is fine. A couple even take the reader out of the jungle and into the frozen north - talk about a change of scenery! Still, Kipling keeps the reader fully engaged with the lives of animals and the effects of their environment.

A book of true escapism, but certainly not "just" for adults or children. Though the language might be a little more difficult to follow for younger children, older children should be able to stretch their imagination. And adults can fully appreciate the language of Kipling, which is rich and descriptive.

A thoroughly enjoyable read!

Editorial Review:

A retelling of a classic favorite combines watercolor illustrations with the story of Mowgli, a boy raised by a family of wolves and his adventures with Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther, and Shere Khan the tiger.

Editorial Review:

Fear, compassion, evil, courage, hope, wonder, the exquisite terror of not knowing what will happen on the next page to characters you care about deeply—these are the marvels that Dean Koontz weaves into the unique tapestry of every novel. His storytelling talents have earned him the devotion of fans around the world, making him one of the most popular authors of our time, with more than 200 million copies of his books sold worldwide.

If you are already a fan, prepare yourself to settle into a novel Dean Koontz considers perhaps his best work to date. If you are a brand-new Dean Koontz reader, buckle up for what will be a most breathtaking ride through the long, enthralling night of...

Christopher Snow is different from all the other residents of Moonlight Bay, different from anyone you've ever met. For Christopher Snow has made his peace with a very rare genetic disorder shared by only one thousand other Americans, a disorder that leaves him dangerously vulnerable to light. His life is filled with the fascinating rituals of one who must embrace the dark. He knows the night as no one else ever will, ever can—the mystery, the beauty, the many terrors, and the eerie, silken rhythms of the night—for it is only at night that he is free.

Until the night he witnesses a series of disturbing incidents that sweep him into a violent mystery only he can solve, a mystery that will force him to rise above all fears and confront the many-layered strangeness of Moonlight Bay and its residents.

Once again drawing daringly from several genres, Dean Koontz has created a narrative that is a thriller, a mystery, a wild adventure, a novel of friendship, a rousing story of triumph over severe physical limitations, and a haunting cautionary tale.

Really Good Book Lindsay V, Miller Place, N.Y. 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I chose to read this book because my mom had told me that the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories was a good series of books. By the cover of the book I had thought that it was going to be about the typical scary haunted house book but it wasn't. Before I read the book I never imagined that it would have been this good. The main character of the book is a young lady named Nancy Drew. Nancy is invited along with her friend Helen to come and join their friend Emily and her fiancé on their wedding day and stay at the inn that they own called, Lilac Inn. In the book someone breaks into Nancy's house and steals her charge plate and some articles of clothing. They are using the charge plate to impersonate Nancy. The impersonator has been stealing all other sorts of things also from the inn. Nancy discovers thatsomeone is trying to impersonate her so now she is on the hunt for her impersonator/burglar who is causing all problems for Nancy. While on their stay Nancy and her friend Helen come to beleive that the house is haunted. Nancy and Helen think that the house is haunted because of the noises and mysterious things that are happeining. I suggest you read the rest of this book to find out who impersonates her and why. This was a very suspenseful book and I enjoyed reading it, it was one of those books where you couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next and there was not a boring moment in this book. This was really good book and that is why I gave it 4 stars.

One sweet mystery! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Young readers being introduced to chapter books will adore Scream for Ice Cream -- a wonderful Nancy Drew mystery. Nancy, Bess and George are The Clue Crew, and they can solve any mystery using deductive reasoning and a super sense of fun and friendship.

When an ice cream company in River Heights announces a contest to pick the best recipe for a new flavor, Nancy is sure that her idea for Clue Berry will be a winner. But something goes wrong. A special recipe disappears, and it looks like Nancy and friends will have a lot more on their plate than mere ice cream!

Carolyn Keene's books have been entertaining readers for generations, and the Clue Crew series provides a great introduction to the world of mystery!

Editorial Review:

How can a contest this sweet turn so sticky?

Nancy and her friends think there is nothing more fun than ice cream in the summer. So when they find out that the owners of the local ice-cream factory are hosting a contest, the Clue Crew can't wait to enter! Contestants must come up with brand-new flavors. And they can use whatever ingredients they want! Nancy is sure that her entry -- Clue Berry -- will win!

But when a friend's secret recipe goes missing, Nancy suspects that someone not-so-sweet is up to no good.

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's Magic 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this book for my two nephews, ages 5 and 7, because I had such wonderful, vivid memories of the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle series as a child(I am now 45!); I wanted them to experience it as well. I was an avid reader as a child(I still am)and was exposed to hundreds of titles and have many favorites that I read to my children and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle still stands out in the top 10 and I still get a smile on my face when I remember reading about the little girl that had radishes growing out of the caked on dirt on her arm because she refused to take a bath!

Editorial Review:

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle has a trick up her sleeve

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle loves everyone, and everyone loves her right back. The children love her because she is lots of fun. Their parents love her because she can cure children of absolutely any bad habit. The treatment are unusual, but they work! Who better than a pig, for instance, to teach a piggy little boy table manners? And what better way to cure the rainy-day "waddle-I-do's" than hunt for a pirate treasure in Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's upside-down house?

An Exciting Adventure 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This review concerns the original 1935 edition and the revised 1972 edition which is completely different from the original. In the original, Nancy wins a piece of land in northern Canada in a radio contest and almost immediately people are trying to buy the land from her. Could it be valuable? Determined to see the land for herself, Nancy, along with her friends Bess and George, set out for the remote wilderness of northern Canada. Along the way the three girls meet an authoress who tells them a sad story of how she was kept apart from her first love many years ago. Upon arriving at her land, Nancy finds that a ruthless group of swindlers is trying to steal her land from her. How Nancy reunites the authoress with her first love and outsmarts the group of swindlers makes for a rather interesting story. This really isn't a mystery story, it's more of an adventure; however, it is quite an exciting book. The story grabs your attention very quickly and there is plenty of action. The northern Canadian setting is used very effectively. The end of the book was very good, as it displays two of Nancy's best qualities, her courage and her willingness to sacrifice something that is hers to help someone else. Unfortunately, this edition is not the one found in new book stores; however, if you ever find it at a used book store, buy it, you won't be disappointed with it. In the revised edition, Nancy goes to the Ohio River area of Illinois to search for a hollow oak. Legend has it, that in the 1600s a French missionary hid a treasure in a hollow oak but was killed before he could reveal its location. This version isn't bad. The book kept me interested throughout but it never had me so engrossed that I couldn't put it down. I would recommend reading this book, but I enjoyed the original version so much more.

Timeless Nancy Drew 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Considering that the Nancy Drew series is 78 years old, I would say that it has stood the test of time. If you're not into the original series from 1930-1979 (56 books in all), there have been many updates and additional series spawned from this character. You may think old when you see these books, but the stories are great, there's always a little edge of danger, cliffhangers on each chapter and it shows young ladies a strong, independent character with drive and smarts. Plus, there's just a great vibe you get from handling the slim hardcover novels and looking the painted illustrations on the cover.

Editorial Review:

Teen sleuth Nancy Drew has been solving mysteries and delighting fans for over 60 years. You won't believe her daring escapades and narrow escapes.

What better way to introduce a girl to Nancy Drew then with the first 6 titles published in the series? This starter set includes; The Secret of the Old Clock, The Hidden Staircase, The Bungalow Mystery, The Mystery at Lilac Inn, The Secret of Shadow Ranch, The Secret of Red Gate Farm -- all at a great price.

In this remarkable and beautiful anthology featuring the likes of Maurice Sendak, Robert Sabuda, Rosemary Wells, and Eric Carle, twenty-three of the most honored and beloved artists in children’s literature talk informally to children—sharing secrets about their art and how they began their adventures into illustration. Excellently written, but too scary for my 4 year old 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I had ordered this for Hanukkah 2006, but luckily I took a sneak peak first. My daughter, aged 4, would find this far too scary. Despite its inappropriateness for the younger, more sensitive reader, it is excellently written and very well illustrated. I have not returned it, but it'll be a while before it comes down from my shelf.

Second grade class gives a rave review 5 out of 5 stars.

I recently read this to a spellbound group of second graders. They so obviously enjoyed it and hung on the plot and dialogue, page after page. The teacher smiled a broad smile throughout and I have to say, it was a pleasure for me to reread it while I read it to them. So add about 20 more high marks to this WINNER from Eric Kimmel. I'm about to check out his other Hershel story as well.

Best book ever for read alouds! 4 out of 5 stars.

I've read this story to elementary age children for years. First graders to fifth graders, they are captured from the very first word and sit spell bound till the last. I guess the secret is that I love reading it as much
as they love listening.

Top Grade! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Let's Go Rock Collecting is an excellent book in the Let's Read and Find Out Science Series. My son started with this book when he was 4 (he's now 5). It has great illustrations that capture a child's attention and actual photos of the various rocks described so that the child (and parent) can identify a few basic rocks.

One thing that is really great about this book is the simple illustrations to educate the reader about the Earth's Crust and Solid Rock Layer. There are simple diagrams of:

1. The components of a Volcano
2. Moh's Scale of hardness
3. The formation of sedimentary rocks
4. Metamorphic rock process

The book also ends with a practical suggestion that kids will love and that's how to begin your own rock collection and start to identify the rocks you have.

NOTE: Depending on your view of the age of the earth, you may like to know that this book utilizes millions of years in its descriptions.

Editorial Review:

Holly Keller has created vivacious new paintings for this favorite Reading Rainbow title about geology. Readers follow two enthusiastic rock hounds around the globe as they add to their collection. Along the way they will learn how sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks are formed. From the Egyptian pyramids to Roman roads, from the diamond ring on your finger to the pebbles under your feet'rocks are everywhere!
