Middle elementary school.

I cannot remember a single one of these fables, which is because Lobel created them. They are fun with unexpected twists and wonderful morals.

Per usual, Lobel has superb, interesting, expressive, and fun illustrations. There is one illustration for each fable.

I'm 21, going on 22 in April, but this was always one of my favorite books (next to Shel Silverstein's Where The Sidewalk Ends). My favorite was Cat and His Visions. My mother would read it slowly and deliberately, licking her chops like the cat would. I noticed that there was also a note in the discussions area that someone's child had nightmares - I ALWAYS had nightmares, but THIS BOOK MADE ME WANT TO FALL ASLEEP BECAUSE I LAUGHED SO HARD that it made me sleepy! I wish I had been able to dream about the cat and his fish - but then again, we had two cats at my house. We actually had a house fire and our two cats died in '98 or '99, but I still have great memories of laying on my bed with my mom, sister, and our kitties, reading fables. And I honestly think I'm a better person because of the lessons that are taught - I always was read Aesop's fables in school to the point where I was almost sick of them, so having this and Shel's book were wonderful, wonderful.
And for any of you parents out there, YES, IT DOES MATTER IF YOU ARE DRAMATIC with the reading. You may be too embarrassed now, and you may be again when your kids are older, but from the time they're born to the time they are about 12, go for the gushy stuff - yes, it's crazy to think of MY mother acting like THAT, or hugging me or anything, but deep down it makes me so happy. Just don't suffocate the kids! ;)

I re-read this book from my childhood and I'm very disappointed with particular messages Madeleine presents to children. I think enough has been said about stars (angels?) being conceived as witches to "play a joke" on everyone and the centaur appearance of the other "angels". No matter what the rest of the story conveys, I am completely revulsed by the notion she presents that Jesus was a fighter. He is not a fighter, but represents peace & love spreading the word of the Father on this earth for all to follow. Also, Jesus has already won the battle for us. All of these ignorant statements in this book by Madeleine need to be pulled before I will even think about looking at this book or sharing it with others.

Gossamer contains both a delightful story about learning to use one's gifts to ease human suffering and a rich metaphor of the workings of the human psyche. Mysterious creatures of the night, more like angels than faeries, flutter and flicker through the objects of our lives finding fragments from which to form dreams to bestow on us. In this gentle story, a young apprentice dream-giver discovers how to use her gossamer touch to find the right fragments to give healing dreams to an abused and angry eight-year-old boy. Lowry has deftly interwoven the story of the young boy and his elderly foster mother with the story of the young dream-giver and her elderly mentor. While kids will identify with the struggles of the youngsters, grown-ups who work with kids will find inspiration in the work of the dream-givers. "We do such important work," says Thin Elderly. "Sometimes we forget that." Thanks, Ms. Lowry, for a wonderful story that will entertain, enlighten and give new strength to readers of all ages.

Learn the value of friendship with one of the most delightful duos in all of children's storytelling! Perfect bedtime stories or beginner's reading books, kids love the animorphed amphibians and funny adventures. Buy one and you'll have to get them all!

My daughter's nursery is decked out in Frogs, so the discovery of these books made them books we had to consider. They are fun and the illustrations are grest. At eleven months she is too young to read them herself, but we read them to her - and she enjoys them. The stories are simple with a central theme - do good for others, treat your friends with respect, help your firends when they need help, laugh, and aporach life with adventure. These are great virtues to instill in young minds. If the books were made in cardboard stock, Teah would be even more happy with them - as it is she frequently grabs one of them when it's time for her bedtime story - and great bedtime stories they are. By the time she starts to read she will know the stories by heart, but that's ok - fond memeories of bedtime stories like these should help her build a lifelong interest in reading on her own.

When I was growing up I owned very few books thankfully I went to the library often but out of the few books I did own this was one of them! I finally introduced it to my own little girl and its as timeless today as it was 25 yrs ago. Any reader is sure to fall in love with sweet little Miss Suzy she has a heart of gold!

This was my absolute favorite book when I was a little girl. I discovered it in first grade at my school's library. I just loved the tall oak tree where Ms. Suzy had her little house. My parents purchased a copy for me to have at home. Everything about this book stuck with me into adulthood. Many, many years later I just had to get it for my little girl, I know that she loves it too. I was so happy to see that it is still in print and children are still enjoying this adorable story.

This novel is profoundly overrated. I read it as a child (probably of ten or eleven) and loved it, as I had loved A Wrinkle In Time, but re-reading it as an adult of forty (and now an English teacher), I must say that A Wind In The Door is heavy-handed, didactic, clumsy, and just plain smug in its willful avoidance of good storytelling and readability. L'Engle beats you over the head with Christian allegory that doesn't really go beyond a very vague sort of early '70s "love EVERYONE" vibe. Characters appear and are immediately recognized as "good" or "evil," and don't even get me STARTED on the dialogue. Honestly, if this had been written by one of my students, I'd send it back with "Do people REALLY ever talk like this?" in red pen. After reading what L'Engle wrote about J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter series: "I read one of them. It's a nice story but there's nothing underneath it. I don't want to be bothered with stuff where there's nothing underneath. Some people say, "'Why do you read the Bible?'' I say, "Because there's a lot of stuff underneath,'"
I can't honestly say that she, herself, shows anything specific underneath. Her writing is smugly vague, full of odd certainties and gaping plot holes. I will admit to still finding A Wrinkle In Time fairly worthwhile, but it suffers from many of the same issues.

It is November. When Meg comes home from school, Charles Wallace tells her he saw dragons in the twin’s vegetable garden.  That night Meg, Calvin and C.W. go to the vegetable garden to meet the Teacher (Blajeny) who explains that what they are seeing isn’t a dragon at all, but a cherubim named Proginoskes.  It turns out that C.W. is ill and that  Blajeny and Proginoskes are there to make him well – by making him well, they will keep the balance of the universe in check and save it from the evil Echthros. 
 
Meg, Calvin and Mr. Jenkins (grade school principal) must travel inside C.W. to have this battle and save Charles’ life as well as the balance of the universe.

If you are scared of being alone, well, you might pick Frog and Toad All Year by Arnold Lobel. Find out if Toad will ever learn how to be alone.

In the beginning, Toad was so nervous to be alone in the sled. So Frog was behind him. There was a big bump and Frog fell out. Toad was still on the sled. And he went by himself all the way to the bottom. Toad learned that being alone is not that bad, and you don't have to be scared.

If you like this book you might pick others in the series. There is Frog and Toad are Friends and Days with Frog and Toad.

I found this book, when I started looking for the Pippi books I remembered from my childhood. Pippi is still as fun and entertaining as ever. I enjoyed reading the stories as an adult as much as I enjoyed them as a child. The book is beautiful with wonderful drawings. This is one of the rare books, where the illustrations bring to life what I imagined. I will enjoy it for many years to come!

Wonderful series of books, however... 5 out of 5 stars.

I was recently reminded of the Betsy-Tacy books I loved so much when I was a young girl. You can not imagine my horror at seeing the current editions' illustrations of the girls, though. Part of the original books' charm was the simple illustrations. Whoever decided to change them should be ashamed. Ashamed and fired. Seriously.

Contact me if you want to join a campaign to have the real drawings returned to future editions of these timeless classics so many of us loved so much.

As both an author and reader of fiction, I was impressed with The lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Maybe it is because I have always enjoyed a book that could hold my attention and make me think at the same time. In a nutshell, the characters are believable and yet a little out of the ordinary and the story line interesting. Give this book a try.

Although I read the story as a child, I recently listened to the audio book during my commute to work. The reader does a fantastic job creating a distinct voice for each character and I thoroughly enjoyed the story all over again. I recommend that anyone who read the story as a child, revisit it again with this fun audio version.

Mr. Lewis' whimsical style creates a fast paced, fast read fairy tale. Woven throughout the book are Christian themes, however, I believe you can still thoroughly enjoy this book even if you are not a Christian. I believe it can be enjoyed by all ages and would be a wonderful book to read to young children. I look forward to reading the rest of the Chronicles of Narnia series.

The story is about four siblings that are sent away from London during the Nazi Germany bombing campaigns during WWII. They go to live with a professor at his large and strange house in the country. During a rainy day it is discovered that a wardrobe in an empty room leads to the new and strange land of Narnia. The four siblings then go on the adventure of their lives.

I'm a 35 years old male and I don't know why, but I had never read any of The Chronicles of Narnia books by Mr. C.S. Lewis. After reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe what a shame it has been to not have read them before. My wife and I saw a trailer for the upcoming `Chronicles' movie by Disney, Prince Caspian. We both thought it looked interesting and decided we should watch the first movie being The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe before seeing Prince Caspian. After reading some of the reviews of the book I decided it would be worth the time to actually read each of the books before seeing the corresponding movie which brings me to the place of reading The Lion... this weekend. Books are almost always better than their corresponding movies and I think it's important, if possible, to read the books first so your imagination can take over and you are not placing the faces and voices of the movie characters into the reading realm. I highly recommend this book and will be reading the rest Mr. Lewis' Chronicles series.
