The Original Love and Logic 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I believe it was my third grade teacher that began reading these to me, and instantly I was hooked. Betty MacDonald is an authoress who can write to both adults and children with fine hilarity, and her character Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle makes Mary Poppins look like a moron. I find her the progeny to the Love and Logic system. The book is filled with multiple stories about kids with various, common behavior problems. Concerned parents call up Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle who then doles out a hilarious but effective cure. It's fairly scripted, but the stories are cute and funny just the same.

Editorial Review:

Everyone loves Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle lives in an upside-down house ans smells like cookies. She was even married to a pirate once. Most of all, she knows everything about children. She can cure them of any ailment. Patsy hates baths. Hubert never puts anything away. Allen eats v-e-r-y slowly. Mrs Piggle-Wiggle has a treatment for all of them.

The incomparable Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle loves children good or bad and never scolds but has positive cures for Answer-Backers, Never-Want-to-Go-to-Bedders, and other boys and girls with strange habits. ‘[Now] in paperback . . . for a new generation of children to enjoy.’ —San Francisco Examiner Chronicle.

Classic 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I originally read this way back in jr. high and sadly only remember being entranced by it--not recalling any of the plot. I finally got around to the rereading and recalled why I had the original feeling of enchantment. This is one good book.

Kit Tyler is a sixteen-year-old girl who leaves Barbados after her grandfather's death for the more austere world of Puritan New England to say with her aunt's family. But Kit is completely unprepared for the ways of these people. Even so, she manages to grow in unimaginable ways as she connects with people with whom she would have never seen herself.

And it's not a simple moralistic book. It's a book about a girl coming of age. Unlike other books of the Puritans, there are no villains, just those who are different and it's amazing to see Kit come to understand that.

The characters are entrancing and dimensional, the setting is described in an honest prose that only shows Speare's love of New England.

It deserves its Newberry.

Editorial Review:

Kit Tyler is marked by suspicion and disapproval from the moment she arrives on the unfamiliar shores of colonial Connecticut in 1687. Alone and desperate, she has been forced to leave her beloved home on the island of Barbados and join a family she has never met. Torn between her quest for belonging and her desire to be true to herself, Kit struggles to survive in a hostile place. Just when it seems she must give up, she finds a kindred spirit. But Kit's friendship with Hannah Tupper, believed a witch by the colonists, proves more taboo than Kit could have imagined and ultimately forces her to choose between her heart and her duty.

Find love or die in the pursuit 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Master of the castle, enchanted to find love or die to the curse, negotiation for love, a beast and then a gentleman, a hero to ward off the wolves, two finding each other and coming together on their own, a villainous Geston, and Belle confessing her love to a dying prince. Time is short, man must find love whether he wants to or not, too survive. Without love man's escape is death; he is desperate to find a woman who brings love, caring, and warmeth to his castle. A warrior well proven in battle, a slayer of his enemies, a builder of fortress strong, a man who confides weakness in none other, a bringer of fear and terror; he must find love or die; he must champion and win the heart of his woman. Death and lack of love combine into the awful monster.

Pride and Prejudice shares a central theme, a powerful Lord, devoid of love, must find love or perish in despair; "if not Belle then who will he find to love him"; a prisoner of love, harsh terms, and brutal commands of control; a disclosure of vulnerable secret revealing hidden secret; a champion against evil rescuing the dame in distress; a soften of heart, a dinner, and a delightful dance; escape from reality through tales of excalibers swords, a Camelot story. The prince thought to possess love but instead discover that he had to win love. Love could not be commanded or possessed, it had to be freely given. The prince fell helplessly in love with the independent mind of Belle.

Phantom of the Opera, a transformation from peasant girl to princess; to love is to be human; all are confined to roles more robotic, slaves within their domain to an ungrateful master; song and dance of the cups, forks, and saucers.

Cinderella, the beast dies but the prince lives again happily ever after. The love of a father siding with Belle, believing in her, an eccentric fellow of no following, a genius before his time, a lost fellow in the woods, a man to be rescued by his daughter.

Lancelot and Quinivere, the forbidden love between a Queen and her servant; the noble house falling for the love of a peasant; both forbidden by code and culture

Editorial Review:

A strange imprisonment

Beauty has never liked her nickname. She is thin and awkward; it is her two sisters who are the beautiful ones. But what she lacks in looks, she can perhaps make up for in courage.

When her father comes home with the tale of an enchanted castle in the forest and the terrible promise he had to make to the Beast who lives there, Beauty knows she must go to the castle, a prisoner of her own free will. Her father protests that he will not let her go, but she answers, "Cannot a Beast be tamed?"

Robin McKinley's beloved telling illuminates the unusual love story of a most unlikely couple: Beauty and the Beast.

Great Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Bob Books series have been great for my homeschooled five year old. He has gone from just knowing his basic letter sounds to reading or attempting to read most everything he can get his hands on in about four months. These books were great for practice and building his confidence. I highly recommend the series.

must buy for the beginner reader! 5 out of 5 stars.

These books are marvelous for getting your grandbabies to read ...I pretend I don't have a clue about STINK or his sister and they also EXPLAIN to their less than with it Grandma WHAT the book is about ...I'm a firm believer in READING and these help me create an atmosphere of pleasure while reading for my girls. They also share with their friends so it has a ripple effect in book discussions with their peers ...

Harry Potter yes, but this is a great series to interest children in reading more at a younger level and with more variety. Back to the old days of a lead female character, a great inspiration for girls. Especially "tweens."

Terribly over-rated 2 out of 5 stars.

This would have been a decent magazine article, but it's not substantial enough to be a book. It is also a bit simplistic, though the message is well-meaning and comes from the heart.

A BEAUTIFUL STORY FOR THE CHRISTMAS SEASON 5 out of 5 stars.

A BEAUTIFUL STORY WHICH REFLECTS LOVE AND UNSELFISHNESS. A GREAT BOOK TO READ DURING THE CHRISTMAS SEASON AND TO GIVE AS A GIFT. RICHARD PAUL EVANS IS ALWAYS TOPS AT WRITING. A BOOK YOU CAN READ TO YOUR CHILDREN.

Everyone should HAVE to read this for Chirstmas. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This has to be the most touching, heartwarming books I have ever read about Christmas. I think that everyone should HAVE to read this book. It really makes you think about what Christmas and family is all about. It strikes a few cords in all of us. I love the fact that the Bible has a place in this book also.

It is a very, very fast read so even those who don't read much can make it through quickly. (I read it within 2 hours before church one Sunday morning.)

By the way, once you read this one you will WANT to read the next to that follow; The Timepiece and The Letter. They are wonderful as well.

Editorial Review:

"Whatever the reason, I find that with each passing Christmas the story of the Christmas box is told less and needed more. So I record it now for all future generations to accept or dismiss, as seems them good. As for me, I believe. And it is, after all, my story." So begins The Christmas Box, the touching story of a widow and the young family who moves in with her. Together they discover the first gift of Christmas and learn what Christmas is really about. The Christmas Box is a Christmas story unlike any other.

If you have a quirky kid....... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My son from an early age marched to a beat of a different drummer. We discovered this book when he was 5, and it was a great thing in his life. I was recently asked to name the most influential non-religious book in our lives and believe it or not this was it. Tacky helped our son believed that there was a place in the world for both the straight-laced run-of-the-mill kids and the more creative types. He is leaving to college today, his third year , and I just had to write this review in thanks. Our son has a lot of self-esteem and this book helped him find it. If you have a quirky kid, this book is a must. If you have a 'normal' kid, but they have a quirky friend this is a good book too, because it doesn't put down either sets of people, or penguins as the case may be. We of course have the whole book memorized and can make any of us smile by starting any of the phases in the book. If we save one of the children's books in our library, Tacky would be by FAR it.

Editorial Review:

Tacky's perfect friends find him annoying until his odd behavior saves the day.

Complex 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This was a very interesting book. As I read it I felt like Toad was a `Prodigal Son', who came back only far enough to receive acceptance, then returned to his bad habits till he was in trouble again.

It reminded me much of myself, playing at being Christian before really giving Christ all areas of my life. Like Toad I would repent, but then not really change.

Rat was wise and resourceful, Mole was tender and caring and awe-full like a child yet also very wise. Badger is like a wise mature old mentor or guide, sent to give direction, and lead one to find one's own purpose in life.

Yet the mix of Animal and Human society just did not make sense to me. It felt like a badly planned Narnia novel. It did not explain how the animal and human worlds came to interact and share a language or culture.

But over all it was a fun read even if dry in some spots.

(First written as Journal Reading Notes in 1999.)

Editorial Review:

An imaginative classic follows the friendship of Mole, Rat, Mr. Toad, and Badger as they share adventures and struggles alongside their river home.

Editorial Review:

What is way cooler than a story about Stink? Three of them — all tucked together in one hilarious boxed set. No lie!

I bought this for my daughter to give to my husband/her dad on Father's Day this year. She seems to like it, and enjoys when he reads it to her. It is a short, straightforward story that is easy for her to follow, and she likes to point out all the little spiders and grasshoppers lurking in the corners of every page.

I find the illustrations to be quite goofy, and not so easy of the eyes, as the characters are all so raw and odd looking - so it's appeal is sort of lost on me. But, it gets it's point across, showing a special time spent between a dad and his child, so I guess it serves it's purpose. : )

Editorial Review:

This well-loved Little Critter picture book has become a modern classic. It's the tale of a father-and-son camping trip filled with Little Critter's mistakes and good intentions. In spite of difficulties, however, the happy father and son manage to put up their tent, catch fish for dinner, and sleep beneath the stars. In spite of minimal text, the story is full and rich, with endearing illustrations from start to finish.
