Too expensive 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

My two older daughters are infatuated with the series Why Some Cats are Rascals ( Book 3). They have all three books from the series and cannot wait for more to come. The most recent addition to the collection was Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World. Following the girls infatuation with the cats I bought "If You Give a Cat a Cupcake" for my almost three years old son. Unfortunately the magic did not work. My son had some passing interest in the illustrations but did not care much about the story... Since he is not able to write a review I decided to do it on his behalf.
I must say that I am disappointed by the fact that this book was practically a waste of money when my son is concerned, especially that I found it rather expensive. I think publishers should find a way of making books more affordable for parents on a low budget, especially when small kids are concerned. Maybe hardcover is not such a good idea for small kids after all... "Why Some Cats are Rascals" are paperback and for that reason much more affordable. On a positive side I find the illustrations in "If you Give a Cat..." indeed very appealing.

Editorial Review:

If you give a cat a cupcake, he'll ask for some sprinkles to go with it. When you give him the sprinkles, he might spill some on the floor. Cleaning up will make him hot, so you'll give him a bathing suit . . . and that's just the beginning!

The lovable cat who first appeared in If You Give a Pig a Party now has his very own book! Written in the tradition of the bestselling If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond's newest story will show everyone that Cat is where it's at!

THE TALE OF A VERY PUSHY MOUSE! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is the first offering of a wonderfully delightful series of like stories for children. If You Give a Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff and illustrated by Felicia Bond tell the story, and the problems you might run into, if you should happen to give a overly active and demanding mouse a cookie. The story begins with a young boy innocently setting by his sidewalk in front of his house. A hungry mouse comes along and the problems begin.

This is a progressive type of tale, where one act of generosity keeps growing and growing. "If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. When you give him milk, he'll probably ask you for a straw. When you give him a straw, he will ask........." And it goes on and on and on until the poor kid pretty well has a completely trashed house and is exhausted trying to fulfill the escalating requests and the subsequent mess the requests ultimately cause. A pushy mouse and cookies, we find, are not a good combination!

The text is delightfully simple and keeps you turning the pages, page after page. You actually find you self wanting to see what the little rodent is going to ask for next. The story is simple and there is no bang, bang, crash crunch plot nor ending. The only problem I find in this aspect is that in this day and age, I find some children (and even more adults), who have the attention span of ferrets on coffee and if the story is in the least bit mellow, their minds simply cannot track. This is a minor problem though, if it is indeed a problem.

The art work by Felicia Bond is quite well done and goes perfectly with the text. The pictures are simple to understand, cute and quite eye catching. I liked them.

This is one of in a series of books by this team. Others include If you give a Moose a Muffin, If you give a Pig a Pancake, If you take a Mouse to the Movies, If you take a Mouse to School and If you give a Pig a Party. All are as well done. I have noted in reading this book and others in the series that the kids love them and will always ask for repeat readings.

Editorial Review:

This is a best selling book by Felicia Bond and Laura Numeroff. This is the story of the consequences of giving a cookie to an energetic mouse that runs the host ragged, but young readers will come away smiling at the antics that tumble like dominoes through the pages of this delightful picture book.

Superior letdown 4 out of 5 stars.

Each book in this series has been something of a surprise. Each one occurs in a different "part" of "The House of the Architect". Up to now, only a tag at the end of the previous volume has given the reader any hint as to the location in the House of the next volume's story.

But Saturday has been hinted at as the master intriguer against Arthur, the Rightful Heir to the Kingdom. She has masterminded the demise of many, including former Key Holders, and nearly Arthur himself on multiple occasions, sacrificing Saturday's Dusk in the second book to set up one such attempt. She was prefigured as a mover and shaker before we knew even the names of most of the other six Days. So I expected the real fireworks to fly in this volume, even though there would clearly be one more to go - Sunday. True, the reasons behind Saturday's destruction of others are made clear, even to her destruction of whole portions of the House. Still, the level of circles within circles found in the earlier volumes is missing here. Once Arthur manages to get to the Upper House, it seems only a matter of time before he subdues Superior Saturday, clearly the most powerful of his enemies.

Yes, there is a cliffhanger at the end, and some uncertainty about the subduing. And we are certainly left with mystery regarding Lord Sunday. I just felt disappointed at the denouement, but perhaps the last volume will show that I was mistaken, and Saturday still has a role.

I can't wait, which shows that I still enjoyed the whole series to date!

Editorial Review:

The secret of his own identity.

The identity of The Architect.

The complete Will of the House.

The fulfillment of his fate.

Arthur Penhaligon is getting closer and closer to these things... but not without risks, conflict, and adventure.

Best Charlie Bone Book, Yet 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Charlie Bone and the Beast is an intriguing book, and - though it is a fairly quick read - it will keep you interested the whole time.

The sixth Charlie Bone book in the series, Charlie Bone and the Beast starts with a new student starting at Bloor's Academy: Dagbert Endless, a boy whose endowment is to control the tides. It soon becomes clear, however, that he is NOT on Charlie's side. Unfortunately (yet inevitably, it seems), Charlie must be his mentor at Bloor's Academy. Dagbert soon makes quick work of insulting almost all of Charlie's friends, and turning them away from him.

Charlie Bone and the Beast has several plot lines, but the main one is how Charlie must reunite with his friends to find Asa Pike, who switched sides in the last book. Meanwhile, the Bloors are plotting to lure Bone and his friends into a trap. And all the while, a mysterious knight is appearing, and one of Charlie's new friends who is surely on his side is becoming mysterious.

I personally like books with intricate plot lines, and this book is a real page-turner. You'll recognize the characters from other books. I am also very glad that Jenny Nimmo doesn't waste too much time going over the other books in plain site for new readers - she blends it fantastically into the book without disturbing the story.

Editorial Review:

Life should be perfect for Charlie now that his parents have been reunited. But mystery and adventure always find him. This time Asa, a fellow classmate who changes into a beast at dusk, and Charlie's sometime-enemy, is missing. His parents seek out Charlie for help. Manfred is holding Asa captive in a forest cave and now Charlie needs the help of the Flames to rescue his classmate.

Manfred has also taken the new endowed student, Dagobert Endless, under his wing and Charlie is highly suspicious of the pair. Can the Flames and Charlie rescue Asa without being caught by Manfred and Dagobert?

Familiar Territory, That Charms Without Much Depth. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I don't think I'd recommend this as a substitute or alternative to the Harry Potter books, but instead as a primer for some younger teens who aren't quite ready for Potter's world. Thematically is runs along a similar course: Boy who's lost his father in this case, comes to terms with the fact that he's has an extraordinary gift. Charlie is capable of looking at a photograph and hearing the voices within, and what was happening at the time the picture was taken. Soon his nasty Grandma Bone who is crafted from the same school of the Dursley's from Potter's world, ship him off to Bloor's Academy, a much less detailed and vague Hogwarts. A mystery is revealed that Charlie with his new friends must solve, while the various other characters align with either the good or the bad. Its charming, and engaging enough however simplistic much of the writing might be. Still for a younger teen there would be much to engross them, and with multiple subsequent books, the writing will hopefully mature along with Nimmo's protagonist.

Editorial Review:

The fabulous powers of the Red King were passed down through his descendants, after turning up quite unexpectedly, in someone who had no idea where they came from. This is what happened to Charlie Bone, and to some of the children he met behind the grim, gray walls of Bloor's Academy. Charlie Bone has discovered an unusual gift-he can hear people in photographs talking! His scheming aunts decide to send him to Bloor Academy, a school for genius's where he uses his gifts to discover the truth despite all the dangers that lie ahead.

I like magic and fantastic stories very much and this one is very good...everything you can imagine of a book and with an excellent message about family values and how to confront common family problems.

Great for kids under 13... :)

A Great 2nd book in this series 4 out of 5 stars.

For you Harry Potter Charlie Bones is a wonderful substituion. Charlie Bone and the Time Twister is a great book. Charlie Bone finds out more about his endowment and more about his evil aunts. He meets a boy from the past and goes on another journey to save someone he doesn't even know. This book is better then the first, with new characters and new endowments.

My son is hooked! 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought my 10 yr old son the first two of this series and it has taken him a month to finish them- he is hooked! I am about to order the next couple in the series as he is dying to get back to reading. It doesn't get much better than that!!

a good fantasy 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I love to read. I read a wonderful fantasy called Charlie Bone and the

Time Twister. The book was written by Jenny Nimmo. The author must

have a good imagination to think of special powers.

The book begins with a young boy named Henry from the 1900's

playing marbles. Henry was sent to the future when his brother rolled the

time twister. Henry was sent ahead 90 years where he meets a boy named

Charlie Bone. Henry asked Charlie to help him get back to his own time.

You have to read the book to see if Henry made it back.

Charlie Bone and the Time Twister is one of my favorite books. I

would refer it to fantasy readers. It is kind of like the Harry Potter books

because of the special powers.

Survival of the fittest (i.e. person with the largest ears) 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Shhh! Don't make so much noise. I don't want you to scare it off. What I am holding in my hand, at this very moment, is something so rare and precious that I'm afraid to make any sudden movements for fear of startling it. What we are witnessing is the very rarely sighted Phyllis Reynolds Naylor stand alone children's book. It's not part of a series or the first in a great long line of "Roxie" books. No sir. This here's an only once-in-a-lifetime glimpsed... what's that? You want to point out that Ms. Naylor has produced AT LEAST twenty-four stand alone novels for kids in her lifetime? Oh fine. Be like that. I was trying to make a point about how many series titles Naylor has produced since she began writing (six series with forty-four books in total by my count). It's amazing she has time to eat, let alone come out with anything of quality. I guess that's the most striking thing about Ms. Naylor. Some authors who shall remain nameless (unless you e-mail me, and then I'll spill everything) write tons of books and their quality goes down. Ms. Naylor writes tons of books and if anything they get more and more original and enjoyable. "Roxie and the Hooligans" is just the latest example.

"Roxie Warbler was neither fat nor thin, short nor tall, pretty nor plain, smart nor stupid". Her ears, on the other hand, were extraordinary. Large and lovely, they unfortunately attract attention from the wrong sort of people. Hooligan-type people. For you see, at Roxie's school are four nasty bullies (or hooligans) that like nothing better than to tease poor Roxie whenever they get the chance. And as intolerable as such a situation might be, it's made all the worse when the hooligans and Roxie accidentally wind up on an abandoned island when an attempt to glue underwear to Roxie's head goes awry. Now our heroine is trapped with the four people she fears the most on an island where there are murderous cutthroats who are perfectly prepared to kill ALL the kids if they can get their hands on them. Roxie hasn't any food or any water, but she does have one thing. A cool head and lots of knowledge from the book, "Lord Thistlebottom's Book of Pitfalls and How To Survive Them". Everything is up to her.

There's a certain level of readership that gets ignored time and time again by publishers and authors alike. In my library system they're called Young Readers. They're the kids who have progressed to chapter books, but they still need simple words, pictures, and large fonts to help them through their reading. Books for this group exist, but they aren't always that ... um ... good. Lots of series books like "The Chronicles of Droon" or "A to Z Mysteries" fall under this definition. So you can imagine how happy I was to find "Roxie" not only a delightful read, but a rather thoughtful one as well. Characters begin as stereotypes (Roxie excluded) and then grow small souls for themselves through their sufferings. The book also has the amusing idea of having Roxie repeat advice taken from Lord Thistlebottom's book when she has the need. If I were to summarize this book, I might call it the practical application of all those how-to-survive-a-crocodile type books that adults seem so enamored of.

Now as a children's librarian I often get requests from concerned parents asking me to recommend books for their children that talk about dealing with bullies. This, obviously, would not be the first book to leap into anyone's head. Be that as it may, it's a great anti-bully statement. Naylor acknowledges right up front that for those kids that don't conform to the rigid sameness of their peers, they are bound to wind up bullied in some way at some time. The hooligans, however, are given their humanity when they constantly find themselves relying on their earful companion. Accompanied by amusing illustrations by artist Alexandra Boiger (of the recent smash hit picture book title, "While Mama Had a Small Little Chat) the book is pure enjoyment through and through. For any kid that likes adventure, cutthroats, and kids surviving on their own, this is a great read. And you know what? If Naylor wants to make this a series and add another chapter to Roxie's adventures, I don't think I'd mind one bit. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Do not panic.

Lord Thistlebottom's Book of Pitfalls and How to Survive Them has taught Roxie Warbler how to handle all sorts of situations. If Roxie's ever lost in the desert, or buried in an avalanche, or caught in a dust storm, she knows just what to do. But Lord Thistlebottom has no advice to help Roxie deal with Helvetia's Hooligans, the meanest band of bullies in school.

Then Roxie finds herself stranded on a deserted island with not only the Hooligans but also a pair of crooks on the lam, and her survival skills may just save the day -- and turn the Hooligans into surprising allies.

Title: Shiloh
Publisher: Aladdin Paperbacks
Author: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Date: Paperback edition 2000

This is a fantastic book for all ages. Shiloh deals with important ethical issues that anyone can relate to. I especially recommend this book for middle school students, as I think they will find its message especially compelling.

In 1990, Shiloh won the coveted Newbery Award. It is a quick fiction read, with only 156 pages. According to Scholastic, the book is at a Grade Level equivalent of 4-6, a Lexile Framework of 890, or a 5.6 Reading Level.

Shiloh tells the story of Marty, an eleven-year old boy living in rural West Virginia. His family has close relationship and strong values. Living in the country, there is an established set of social norms that all families live by. When Marty stumbles across a young beagle hiding behind a bush, he is forced to grapple with these strict social norms in his quest to define right from wrong.

After spotting the Beagle, Marty notices that the dog won't stop following him. The dog is skinny and desperately in need of a meal and some love. After coxing the dog into his arms, Marty quickly falls in love with his new found friend. He names him Shiloh, and because of his owners apparent neglect and abuse, Marty vows to take care of him.

Marty quickly discovers that the dog belongs to ornery man by the name of Judd Travers. After taking care of Shiloh for some time, his parents discover the dog and demand that Marty return him to his owner. In spite of his better instincts, Marty returns Shiloh to Judd Travers.

Adding to the plot, Shiloh manages to escape again and find his way back to Marty. This time Marty is faced with a difficult ethical dilemma: should he return the dog to his abusive owner, or should he defy his parents to keep and protect Shiloh?

After an accident in the woods, Marty's parents once again discover his secret. Despite their growing affection for the dog, his parents demand that he return the dog again to its rightful owner. At this point , Marty is so desperate to keep the dog, he offers to do almost any thing for Judd, so long as he can have Shiloh back.

The book is riveting and keeps the reader engaged all the way to the last page. The characters are well developed; the reader truly feels Marty's pain as he grapples with his difficult situation. This book is a must read for all animal lovers or anyone learning to make difficult decisions.

As a caveat, children without a rural background may have trouble understanding or relating to Shiloh. The book uses beautiful imagery to describe the scenery of rural West Virginia; however, this may not appeal to someone who grew up in an urban setting.

My son loved it 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I bought the book because my 4-year-old son had been on the receiving end of some of the unfriendly behaviors that are the basis of the book. My son loves the book. Aside from the fact that he gets the author's premise (reasoning rather than reacting), he just genuinely enjoys it. He laughs out loud at some of the situations in the book. It didn't trigger the meaningful discussion I'd hoped we'd have about bullies (unbridled parental optimism on my part there!), but it's made for a lot of fun bedtime reads.

King of the Playground 4 out of 5 stars.

The King of the Playground
By: Phyllis Renolds Naylor

This book can inspire little kids to stick up for themselves. It teaches little kids that a bad situation can always turn out good. A friend is always around the corner.

There are a lot of funny exaggerations.
On page 23 Sammy chases Kevin in a tank.

The illustrator did a good job of elaborating the colorful pictures.
On page 2 the author did a really good job of explaining his spider-man shirt and his horseshoe pants.

The writer really captured the roll of an elementary school bully.
On page 3 Sammy kicks Kevin off the monkey bars.

My opinion on this book is that it is a good lesson to stick up for yourself. There is always a friend out there for you. You just have to compromise a little bit and you will find someone.

Editorial Review:

"Kevin repeatedly faces the terrorist tactics of Sammy, the self-appointed king of the playground. . . . Kevin returns home each time to an encouraging conversation with his father, (who helps) Kevin use his wits in an imaginative showdown with Sammy. . . . Humorous and realistic."--The Horn Book.
