A Meaningfull Read 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Zia is a great book to read. I haven't read Island of the Dolphins, but Scott O' Dell made it possible to still understand the plot of the previous story. The story moved a bit fast for me though, sometimes I got lost, and I was like, "Wow. Zia's already here? What happened to...?" But overall, the story had a very interesting plot. I found it sad that Karana dies just a while after she gets saved from the island. But I realize the Karana dying is very important since it makes Zia realize that Karana died for something. For her beliefs. And this causes Zia to look for what she believes in, where she belongs, what her identity is. I think Scott O' Dell did a good job at making a unique plot with a message that gets the reader to think.

Very deep and moving 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book, and I love Zia, but it is very sad. Zia is very strong and determined, but she doesn't care for anything but Karana. She closes her heart to everyone but Karana - even before she actually meets her, she only thinks of her and only wants her. And then... she finds herself all alone. Even her younger brother, who loves her so much, leaves her, because seeing that there is no place for him in Zia's heart, he gives his heart to the sea. It's also sad that Father Vicente's good intentions don't work out because they are not practical, and that means there is no way at all for the Indians. They can never become what the Europeans want them to be - and in the way they are there is just no place for them in the new world the Europeans have created.

The Adventures of Odyssues 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is the story of Athena and Odysseus. Odysseus was trying to get home to Ithaca, but Poseidon, the sea god, was giving him the hardest time of his life. All the gods were angry at Odysseus because he blinded the Cyclops, Poseidon's son. All of Odysseus' warriors were destroyed.

Odysseus' son is going to go look for him. Other men wanted to marry Odysseus' wife to get his land and his money, but she did not want to marry anyone else.

This book is really good to read for any age. It is interesting to learn about the different gods and goddesses in the story and how they act with Odysseus. If someone reads the story to you, like our teacher did, it feels like you are actually in it. If you want to learn more about Odysseus, the gods and goddesses, and his journey, read the rest of the books in the series.

Editorial Review:

For nearly twenty years, Odysseus has fought terrifying giants and monsters, weathered the loss of his men, and angered gods and goddesses. Now he is trapped on the island of the alluring sea goddess, Calypso. Back in Ithaca, his wife, Penelope, and their son, Telemachus, are desperately warding off the suitors who want to marry Penelope in order to take control of Odysseus's island. Then a visit from a mysterious stranger gives Telemachus the courage to confront the suitors, and to head off in search of his long-lost father. Could the stranger be the gray-eyed warrior goddess, Athena?

Editorial Review:

Here is a brand new edition of the classic anthology of nursery rhymes--over 500 rhymes, songs, nonsense jingles, and lullabies traditionally handed down to young children. Included are all of your favorites, ranging from "Yankee Doodle Came to Town" and "A Frog He Would A-Wooing Go" to "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep," Jack and Jill" and "Old Mother Hubbard." And complementing the rhymes are nearly a hundred illustrations, including reproductions of early art found in ballad sheets and music books, which highlight the development of children's illustrations over the last two centuries.

With each piece, Iona and Peter Opie introduced a wealth of information, noting the earliest known publications of the rhyme, describing how it originated, illustrating changes in wording over time, and indicating variations and parallels in other languages. Moreover, in the general introduction, the Opies discuss the different types of rhyme and the earliest published collections, and they address such questions as who was Mother Goose and whether or not individual rhymes originally portrayed real people. For this second edition, the notes have been updated and extended in light of recent scholarship, providing an unrivaled wealth of literary and bibliographic information.

The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes is now more than ever an indispensable reference source for scholars and book collectors as well as a volume to be treasured by parents and children alike.

My son started reading this series from Mary Pope Osborne but this book was missing from the libary. We purchased this book from Amazon, it was here in 3 days. This series was great for my 10 year old that does not like to read. It was easy to read and understand.

The Odyssey of a book review 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is full of information about Odsseus adventure so far. This is really one of those books in a series when they tell you about the other books. If you read this book you have to read the others in the series. It gives you an example of Odessus treachery at sea.

In these books based on episodes from Homer's Odyssey, Mary Pope Osborne brings to life the exciting adventures of one of the greatest heroes of all time.

I really really like this book and have read it several times. I hope other readers won't be intimidated by the creepy cover and title because trust me, if you read this you'll want your own copy. This book is really exciting and suspenseful.

A good , rollicking adventure 4 out of 5 stars.

Measle and the Dragodon is the sequel to the successful Measle and the Wrathmonk and the second in Ian Ogilvy's epic Measle series of book which chronicle the adventures of Measle Stubbs. These books are very entertaining as they are a bit like Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events but with magic. The second book is sort of an epic, quest type of story in which Measle is living with his doting parents in glam Merlin Manor when they are kidnapped by a gang of Wrathmonks [mad warlocks] who want revenge for the death of Measle's ex-guardian, Basil Tramplebone [he got what he deserved]. The Wrathmonks take Measle's parents to the Isle of Smiles, a sinister abandoned theme-park in the middle of the ocean. The Wrathmonks are being manipulated by a creature whose name isn't revealed but who is the last survivor of a powerful race of beings known as the Dragodons. Now Measle must go on a quest to the Isle of Smiles, into the catacombs and engage the Dragodon in an almighty battle with the fate of the world at stake.
A dramatic climax, a good villain, a convincing plot and rather disgusting [Roald Dahl disgusting, not vulgar disgusting]humour make Measle and the Dragodon an entertaining book to say the least. I'm currently on the third in the series, Measle and the Malockee.

Editorial Review:

Tom Barton and his Uncle Jack live on the edge of danger, smuggling goods under the very nose of the king's searchers. Shrewd, brave, desperate at times, they make run after run across the Channel, braving rough seas, heavy winds, and a growing restlessness among their countrymen. All Europe is aflame with the writing and preaching of Martin Luther.

Tom and his uncle come into contact with another man, William Tyndale, whose work and prayer is to put an English Bible into the hands of the common people. While Uncle Jack sees only the profit in a religious Reformation, it is Tom who sees in Tyndale's work the dawning of a new age and a new way of life for himself and England.

William Tyndale was the hawk that dare not hunt by day. Hunted, hated by many, a fugitive in several countries, this humble man's pen changed the course of history. For modern Christians, he is the symbol of scholarship and courage, determination and meekness. For Tom Barton, he was father and friend, teacher and comforter, and the first true testimony of Christ in a godless age.

A Fantastic Dark Fantasy Story 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I first this book when I was about 12, and it remains on my shelf to this day (I'm now 35.) I highly recommend it for kids who enjoy fantasy books. Yes, it's dark and has genuinely creepy moments in it--but I see no reason that should discourage young readers or their parents, as it's an extremely engaging tale of a little girl battling the forces of evil. Resourceful girl characters are in short supply in children's fantasy literature, so this shouldn't be passed over.

The issues raised in another review here (regarding the unhelpfulness of adult authority figures in the book, and Ellen's bad descision to accept a ride from a stranger) would be points well taken if this were a book for 5 year olds. However, any child old enough to read and appreciate this book should be well past the point of learning that policemen are generally good and that hitchhiking is unwise. Give kids some credit! And give them good books, like this one.

Editorial Review:

Ellen awakens one morning with a mysterious silver frown on the pillow beside her. What magic powers it possesses she has not yet discovered, but the sudden changes in her life are unmistakable: her house is burned down, her family has disappeared, and a man in a dark uniform is stalking her. Can Ellen ever find her family? Can she use the power of the silver crown to thwart the powers of darkness? What diabolical force hides inside the mysterious castle in the woods?

Sanitized Pablum 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Why did she shorten a number of the poems/ditties? This reads like my radio scanning the first 10 seconds of each station. These poems were written with lots of verses, why not include them?

And I don't particularly enjoy the sanitizing of the What Are Little Boys Made Of poem. Why not read it in the original? Wouldn't it provide an interesting opportunity to discuss gender stereotypes to appropriately aged children, instead of dumbing it down for them?

I did like My Kindergarten, though.

Editorial Review:

An exuberant companion to the bestselling nursery rhyme collection, My Very First Mother Goose. "A magical selection" enthused The Times about My Very First Mother Goose, the first collaboration between Iona Opie, the leading expert on children's lore and literature, and Rosemary Wells, one of the finest of all living picture book artists. Now, the two have teamed up again to produce this equally captivating volume for the very young. With over fifty-five favourite nursery rhymes, each illustrated with glorious inventiveness and vitality, this book fairly sings out, "Mother Goose is back - and so is the magic!"
