Editorial Review:

When we last saw George and Harold, they were about to take their pet pterodactyl Crackers back to the Cretaceous period. But things didn't work out quite as they had hoped. They've entered an absurd alternate reality where teachers are nice, kids are allowed to read banned books, and the cafeteria food doesn't smell like dirty diapers. Even worse, they've discovered alternate versions of themselves--Evil George and Evil Harold--who plan to unleash some preposterous plans on Piqua, Ohio. Now it's up to George and Harold to defeat the evil twins and THEIR superhero, Captain Blunderpants!

"If we Fail, the Luarin will see to it that we Cannot Rise Again..." 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The last time we saw Alianne of Pirate's Swoop was briefly in Wild Magic (Immortals), as a little girl of about five. Now she's sixteen, and the true product of her parents: Alanna the King's Champion and George Cooper, the King's Spymaster. Although she's eager to take her place amongst the adults of her world, honing her gifts as a spy, she's also perfectly content to spend her time relaxing, flirting and mischief-making - much to the disappointment of her mother.

After a particularly uncomfortable squabble with her mother over her prospects for the future, Aly decides to sail her boat to her friends' estate for a while till her fiery mother cools down. However, Aly didn't count on the pirates prowling the coast, who capture her and put her on sale as a slave within a few pages! This of course, is where the story really starts. Aly is approached by the trickster god Kyprioth, who ensures that she is sold to a decent family in the Copper Isles, his homeland. He makes a wager with Aly: if she keeps the children of the Balitang family safe throughout the summer, he'll return her to her family.

The political situation on the Isles is dire: centuries ago the white-skinned luarins invaded, subjugating the dark-skinned rakas to slavery. Kyprioth has been unable to act in his peoples' defense until now, and he wants Aly to help him put a raka back on the throne, saving the Isles from the mad machinations of the royal Rittevon family. According to his prophesy, the potential-monarch he has in mind is one of the two Balitang girls: Saraiyu or Dovesary, whose lineage connects them to both the luarin Rittevons and the old raka queens. They seem like the perfect candidates for the throne, ushering in a time of co-habitation between both races.

But first Aly must get them through the summer, a task easier said than done when one takes into account the political maneuverings of the royal family. It's too complex to even begin to outline in a simple review, but needless to say, there are plenty of intrigues, romances, betrayals, murders and inheritances that keep Aly on her toes. Throw in a meddling trickster god, a crow-turned-man named Nawat who has his eye on Aly (and confused as to why she doesn't appreciate him trying to feed her bugs), and racial tensions on both the luarin and raka side, and Pierce crafts another fantastic story that pits a young, headstrong, intelligent heroine against the problems of the big, wide world. Pierce goes out of her way to portray the basics of spy-craft, including code-breaking, disguises, diplomacy and making friends in the right places, lending a realistic air to the proceedings. Unlike her mother, Aly is more used to getting what she wants through humour, trickery and espionage, and as much as I love Alanna (who was first introduced to us in Alanna: The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness)), her daughter is much more enjoyable to read, what with her self-deprecating nature and her wicked sense of humour.

As well as this, Pierce is careful to mix in the shades of grey into what could be a (literally) very black-and-white situation. Although the luarin people unfairly took control of the raka lands during the invasion, Pierce makes it clear that Aly and Kyprioth's efforts are not to eradicate luarin presence in the Isles, but to establish peaceful and equal rights between luarin and raka. Meanwhile, Aly struggles with the mistrust and foreboding of several raka servants, who are none too pleased to find that their god's envoy is a white-skinned luarin. Trying to win the trust of several raka servants in the household is another challenge for Aly, as is trying to keep her temper at bay when luarin royals insult her newfound friends. Into all of this comes the character of Nawat - the crow who has had himself turned into a human to better help Aly - like a breath of fresh air, who cares nothing for the colour of one's skin and whose innocence personifies the ideal way of looking at the world.

Furthermore, Pierce several opportunities to take a careful look into family dynamics, specifically those of the Coopers and the Balitangs. Although we only get a short glimpse of the Coopers at the beginning of the novel, what we see is promising: Aly takes more after her father than her mother, and her lack of motivation means that she and Alanna have a somewhat prickly relationship. Meanwhile, her father is not at all happy with the idea that his only daughter wants to take up spying, despite the fact that he taught her everything she knows. Sadly, we don't get to see Aly's brother Thom or Alan (her twin, which was a relationship well worth exploring), although throughout the course of the book, Pierce treats her fans with visions of what is happening in Tortall in Aly's absence, including updates on Daine and Numair, Keladry, Raoul and Buri, and several other familiar faces from previous books, most of whom make up the members of Aly's extended foster family. Such appearances won't mean much to those who have not read any of Pierce's previous books, but to those who are long-time fans, it's a treat!

Meanwhile, in the Copper Isles, Pierce presents the rather odd Balitang family, made up of the liberal-yet-strict Duke Mequen, his daughters Sarai and Dove (the daughters of his first wife, a member of the raka nobility), his second wife Winnamine (a luarin noblewoman) and their younger children. Sarai and Dove, as the potential heirs to the throne are opposites in temperament and nature, but are both intelligent enough to understand their responsibilities and use their strengths in the pursuit of peace: for Sarai, it is her beauty and charm, for Dove, it is her watchfulness and quick wits. But the real gem is the characterization of Winnamine, a woman who is a loving and concerned stepmother who is struggling to maintain control over her headstrong stepdaughters and understand the ways of the raka people. How often do you come across stepmothers who *aren't* trying to kill their husband's offspring? She's a great character, and between the four of them, the Balitang family soon have Aly - and the reader - deeply concerned about their fates.

In both cases, it's a realistic and honest look at familial relations that are often strained, but ultimately loving, and provide striking contrast to the deceitfulness and danger of the royal family and their court.

"Trickster's Choice" is the first book that Tamora Pierce has written in two parts, not four, as in the case of Song of the lioness, The Immortals and Protector of the Small (First Test, Page, Squire, Lady Knight) making it rather thicker than usual. Make sure you have its sequel Trickster's Queen (Aliane) on hand to complete Aly's tale.

Editorial Review:

Tamora Pierce brings readers another Tortall adventure! Alianne is the teenage daughter of the famed Alanna, the first lady knight in Tortall. Young Aly follows in the quieter footsteps of her father, however, delighting in the art of spying. When she is captured and sold as a slave to an exiled royal family in the faraway Copper Islands, it is this skill that makes a difference in a world filled with political intrigue, murderous conspiracy, and warring gods. This is the first of two books featuring Alianne.

Keladry of Mindelan is now a knight! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Keladry of Mindelan, having achieved her goal of becoming a knight is disappointed at how things are turning out. The war between Tortall and Scanran is growing and before Kel knows it Lord Wyldon is assigning her to a refugee camp where she will lead it and take charge. Kel doesn't want to at all. She wants to be in the battle where she is truly needed but Wyldon disagrees and in the end Keladry goes to the refugee camp.

But Kel does not want to be there. In her Ordeal, it told her to go after a man named Blayce who is killing children in order to make killing machines that are tearing Tortall apart. What to do?

Read 'Lady Knight'! It's a great ending to a great series.

Dare to be different 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My 4 yo son enjoys this book and I enjoy its message. Essentially, that message is "Be yourself. Don't conform just because other people want you to." The story is fun and the illustrations are whimsical. I look forward to purchasing more books by Pinkwater.

Great kid's book about being different 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm an elementary school art teacher and I use this book every year! I love Pinkwater- he's so fabulously wacky and this story doesn't disappoint. I have my kiddos draw pictures of the house of their dreams, too. We have princess houses and underwater houses and candy/ice cream houses- it's great fun!

A great book about believing in your dreams 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book about following your own dreams, dancing to your own tune, believing in what drives you, all done in a really engaging book. The marker drawings are great--I love how you can see the marker lines. It's humorous and wonderful and wild. Share it with your kids!

When Mr. Plumbeans' house is splashed with bright orange paint, he decides a multi-colored house would be a nice change. This favorite story of creativity and individuality is back by popular demand. Full color. Reissue.

Disc Dis-Oriented 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Rincewind the non-magical wizard is a stock character in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Rincewind (one knows he is a wizard because it says so on his pointy hat) specializes in cowardice and running away. He is the complete anti-hero, the ultimate pawn of Fate and whatever god is having a bad day in Discworld's home of the gods, Dun Manifestin. Any book with Rincewind in it is sure to be fine satire.

Rincewind began his career in a double novel story THE COLOR OF MAGIC and THE LIGHT FANTASTIC at the end of which he is presented with the Luggage. I always picture the Luggage as an old fashioned steamer trunk with a lot of little feet along the bottom edge. The Luggage is vicious. Anyone who has ever wrestled with a suitcase will understand.

In INTERESTING TIMES, Rincewind is summoned to the Discworld's equivalent to the Orient. Terry Pratchett seems to have consumed a whole series of "samurai" novels combined with a course on Chinese history and regurgitated it back up as this very funny tale of how the five noble families of the Counterweight Continent contend for the Empire: the Hongs, the Sungs, the Tangs, the McSweeneys and the Fangs.

Yes, you heard me right. The McSweeneys. In this fine satiric fantasy the reader can learn about the Art of War and also how Luggage gets made. This is wicked fun for literate readers!

Editorial Review:

"May you live in interesting times." -- Ancient Curse

Another outrageously clever installment in the Discworld files, Interesting Times reminds the world why Terry Pratchett is considered the best fantasy and humor writer in the English speaking world.

When a carrier albatross arrives from the Counterweight Continent with an Urgent Request for a "Great Wizard," Rincewind is "volunteered." Along his absurdly delicious travels, he meets a colorful band of characters only Terry Pratchett could compile. Their mission is to either defend or destroy the Forbidden City of Hunghung. The instructions are not entirely clear.

In this international bestseller, the funniest writer in fantasy strikes again with a rollicking tale of murder and mayhem in Discworld.

"The funniest parodist working in the field today, period." -- The New York Review of Science Fiction

My daughter is 17 months old and I am now buying this book for the second time because she has already overused her old one. At one point she was just bringing me pages and seemed so disappointed when all I could do was turn the cardboard over. I eventually had to just throw the pages away and get a new one.

Excellent for infants! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 8-month old loves these books. The pictures are simple but endlessly fascinating to him, and the message is simple and clear. I read this, "Yummy-Yucky" and "Quiet-Loud" every day to him and he never tires of them. (I cannot say the same for every book I want to read to him.)

Sooooo cute!!!!!!!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Bingeley-bingeley beep! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Among Discworld fans, it's a well-known rule that you musn't read his stuff on the bus. People tend to regard as strange those among their fellow passengers who giggle as they read. Giggling is always a hazard with Pratchett, as is interrupting other people's activities and forcing them to listen to you reading a passage out loud. This one features Commander Sam Vimes and Vetinari the Patrician, two of my favorite recurring characters, as they try to deal (each in his characteristic way) with a territorial dispute that wants to become a war. Klatch, only a short distance across the sea, is a sandy country full of turban-wearing camel-riders who also invented astronomy and vindaloo, which gives the author lots of opportunities to show up rampant nationalism for the insanity it is. (I suspect he was thinking of the First Gulf War here, as well as British attitudes toward immigrant Pakistanis, but there is also considerable relevance to the present war in Iraq.) Vimes vehemently resists being a military man (cops are NOT the same as soldiers) but finds himself involved anyway. And Vetinari has no use for the social and economic waste of war. Plus, there's the political sub-plot, and Corp. Nobbs's search for a lady friend of his own, plus the questionable ability of Leonard of Quirm (inventor and artist extraordinaire) to deal with the so-called Real World. Pratchett is a genius of comedy -- in the sense of the Human Comedy.

Editorial Review:

In these wildly eccentric adventures, Britain's best-selling living novelist mines a rich seam of comic fantasy that takes us to the Edge -- and beyond.

I was first introduced to this book by a second grade student who told me Dav Pilkey was his favorite author. I was just impressed that a second grader knew an author much less had a favorite one. After I read this book and Dogzilla, Pilkey became my favorite too! I now purchase the two books frequently to read to kids of all ages. I usually end up giving the copies to some "lucky" kid in the crowd, and I always purchase more for my next reading visit. KIDS LOVE PILKEY!! (and so does this adult)

Editorial Review:

Doctor Varmint and his beautiful assistant, Rosie Rodent, have made--and captured--a stunning scientific discovery: the mighty Kat Kong. But when he breaks free from his shackles and tears through the streets of Mousopolis, there's no stopping his terrifying rampage. Is anyone clever enough to halt this massive meowing menace?

I wish I could write like this! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Calling Doctor Amelia Bedelia by Herman Parish, like all of his Amelia Bedelia books, is hysterically funny. Parish's use of expressions confuse Mr. Rogers' maid, Amelia Bedelia, throughout the entire story. Poor, silly, Amelia Bedelia never realizes how confused she really is. She takes everything anyone says literally, so when her boss Mr. Rogers says "jump in the car", she thinks that he actually means to sit in the car and jump.
In this story, Amelia Bedelia goes to the doctor. However, when she gets there the nurse asks for Amelia Bedelia's help with the patients. A woman who calls the doctor's office to complain that she has "caught a bug" is told to "let it go" by Amelia Bedelia. She proceeds to tell a woman who has hives to bring some honey to the doctor's office. She looks at a bank's clock to take a patient's temperature and she tells a boy to draw his own blood onto a piece of blank paper. A boy says that he is at the office for a test and Amelia Bedelia tells him that he must go to school.
No matter what Amelia Bedelia did for most of the book, she is a hit when she "treats" the patients to ice cream! This is not exactly what the nurse had in mind when she said to treat the patients, however, Amelia Bedelia comes out looking like a hero!
Amelia Bedelia is entertaining to the adults who read this story to children because we have an even better sense of Amelia Bedelia's silliness. I love reading this story to my second graders and they love hearing it!

Editorial Review:

Funny bones

The doctor is out! But Amelia Bedelia is ready to help a crowd of grouchy patients. Along the way she doses out some of the best medicine of all -- laughter, of course!
