This is a wonderful book with lovely illustrations. It is a favourite of my daughter's since childhood and she was thrilled to have her own copy for her 16th birthday!

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. An apple pie is easy to make...if the market is open.

But if the market is closed, the world becomes your grocery store. This

deliciously silly recipe for apple pie takes readers around the globe to gather

ingredients. First hop a steamboat to Italy for the finest semolina wheat. Then

hitch a ride to England and hijack a cow for the freshest possible milk. And,

oh yes! Don't forget to go apple picking in Vermont! A simple recipe for apple

pie is included. "Libraries should consider purchasing multiple copies since

every preschool and primary-grade teacher in town will want a copy to

read."--(starred) Booklist.

Editorial Review:

"Until this century, most children's poetry was either syrupy sweet or overblown and didactic, and tended to talk down to its readers. Contemporary children's poets have thrown all that condescension and moralizing out the window, and write with today's real child in mind."
- from the Introduction by Jack Prelutsky

Here in one gloriously illustrated volume are 211 wonderful poems that represent the best this century has to offer. From sibling rivalry, school, monsters, food, and just plain silliness, to such ageless themes as the seasons, Who am I?, and the many moods of childhood, this is a collection that begs to be read aloud and shared with the whole family. The poems, from every decade of this century, showcase 137 famous poets.

Selected by Jack Prelutsky, America's leading children's poet, and illustrated by award-winning watercolorist Meilo So, this useful and beautiful gift is a splendid way to end the century -- or start a new one. Truly a book that families will cherish long after the millennium excitement is over, The 20th-Century Children's Poetry Treasury is a joyous companion volume to the best-selling The 20th-Century Children's Book Treasury.

Mighty Robot, Mighty Reader 5 out of 5 stars.

Reading is so hard, why even bother to try? For a ten year old brainiac who just can't make sense of the written word, Ricky Ricotta is a beam of light in the darkness. It's simple enough, not too silly, and it's a "Chapter Book". Still have to "make" him read, but this author has made him not dread it quite so much.

Editorial Review:

It's Ricky Ricotta's birthday, and as a special treat, his parents are taking him and his Mighty Robot to see dinosaurs at the museum. Too bad they've also invited Ricky's little cousin Lucy--she's a real pest! When they get to the museum, all the dinosaurs are missing their heads . . . because an evil spacebunny from Jupiter has used the dino DNA to create Jurassic Jack Rabbits! Now it's up to the entire Ricotta family, including Lucy, to stop them from taking over the planet. With their easy-to-read language and action-packed pictures, the Ricky Ricotta books are ideal for beginning readers.

This is a wonderful book ! My grandaughter's teacher had the kids read it in class. I made a thunder cake and took it in for the class when they were done. The receipe is in the back of the book. They loved it and it was a lot of fun. Also, a good book for children afraid of thunder storms. I highly recommend it.

My dad used to read this book to me when I was a little girl. I LOVED IT!! I will always remember him making very noisy and obnoxious (but entertaining!!) thunder "sounds" - he was so funny and I will always, always, always remember him reading this book to me. I have NEVER been afraid of thunder.. maybe it was because of this book?? I highly recommend Thunder Cake for anyone looking to have a great time with their child!! They'll remember it forever!

Editorial Review:

Everyone knows that the world is flat, and supported on the backs of four elephants. But weren't there supposed to be five? Indeed there were. So where is it?...

When duty calls. Commander Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork constabulary answers. Even when he doesn't want to. He's been "invited" to attend a royal function as both detective and diplomat. The one role he relishes; the other requires, well, ruby tights. Of course where cops (even those clad in tights) go, alas, crime follows. An attempted assassination and a theft soon lead to a desperate chase from the low halls of Discworld royalty to the legendary fat mines of Uberwald, where lard is found in underground seams along with tusks and teeth and other precious ivory artifacts. It's up to the dauntless Vimes -- bothered as usual by a familiar cast of Discworld inhabitants (you know, trolls, dwarfs, werewolves, vampires and such) -- to solve the puzzle of the missing pachyderm. Which of course he does. After all, solving mysteries is his job.

The Wump World 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I love everything Bill Pete ever wrote - except this book. And I'm an environmentalist! There is nothing joyful or entertaining within the pages of this entire book and kids' books need that so kids will want to read them again and again and grow to love to read. You can teach kids to take care of their world without inventing a creature and giving it a horrible existence to pound a kid over the head with the fact that we're passing on to them a damaged world.

Who are the real 'wumps'? 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Cute characters giving a very strong message about looking after the planet. Great way to introduce young children to having an environmental conscience. Highly recommended.

Favorite children's book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As with other reviewers, this was one of my favorite books as a child. I read a lot then, and still read a lot now. The Wump World was one of a handful of books that I had as a child that I kept all these years. The story is sad (and somewhat disturbing in fact) in the middle, as the Pollutions destroy the planet, but the story ends with distinct hope for the future, that the world can renew itself.

Bill Peet writes wonderful stories. If you like the Wump World, check out some of his other books. He also did a lot of work for Disney animation, including The Sword in the Stone and 101 Dalmatians. You see his name a lot on old Disney films.

Editorial Review:

The Pollutians invade the Wump World and turn the green meadows into a concrete jungle.

A Must Have For All Toddlers! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My daughter is 15 months old and LOVES this series. Although I do not think it is the most exciting book (and she has tons!) kids LOVE it. The pictures are simple but colorful and the text is easy for her to understand. She picks out this book night after night. I would very highly recommended any of this series.

Big dog and little dog are the BEST! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My son loves these books, and I must say this is one of my personal favorites. If you have a toddler you must get this book. You cant help but smile each time you read it and your child with love it.

Our family loves this book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After checking this book out from the library multiple times and maxing out the allowable renewals each time, with no sign of our ten-month-old son getting tired of it, we knew we had to buy this book. The bright, bold graphics really grab his attention--he will crawl over to pull the book off the shelf on his own, and loves to play with it even when we aren't reading it to him.

It helps that we have a "big dog" and two "little dogs" in the family, so the story means something to him. For the adults, it's a clever and funny little story that will ring true to any dog owner. It continues to amuse us even after dozens and dozens of repeated reads.

Editorial Review:

The sweet personalities. lasting friendship, and hilarious antics of Big Dog and Little Dog will delight young readers when they go on a walk with their owner and get into some trouble.

Delightfully charming 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A witty fairy tale with plenty of action and wit, written for children but thoroughly absorbing for adults. Be careful: it skewers organized religion.

Editorial Review:

In a world whose seasons are defined by Christmas sales and Spring Fashions, hundreds of tiny nomes live in the corners and crannies of a human-run department store. They have made their homes beneath the floorboards for generations and no longer remember -- or even believe in -- life beyond the Store walls.

Until the day a small band of nomes arrives at the Store from the Outside. Led by a young nome named Masklin, the Outsiders carry a mysterious black box (called the Thing), and they deliver devastating news: In twenty-one days, the Store will be destroyed.

Now all the nomes must learn to work together, and they must learn to think -- and to think BIG.

Part satire, part parable, and part adventure story par excellence, master storyteller Terry Pratchett’s engaging trilogy traces the nomes’ flight and search for safety, a search that leads them to discover their own astonishing origins and takes them beyond their wildest dreams.

Editorial Review:

Started by Seuss, finished by Jack Prelutsky, and splendiferously illustrated by Lane Smith, this is the children's book publishing event of the year! Big--56 pages--and bursting with energy, here is a joyous ode to individuality, starring an unsinkable teacher named Miss Bonkers and quirky little Diffendoofer School, which must prove it has taught its students how to think--or have them sent to dreary Flobbertown. Included is an introduction by Dr. Seuss's longtime editor explaining how the book came to be and reproducing Dr. Seuss's 1989 original pencil sketches and hand-printed notes for the book--a true find for all Seuss collectors. In Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! Jack Prelutsky and Lane Smith pay homage to Dr. Seuss in their own distinctive ways. The result is the union of three one-of-a-kind voices in a brand-new, completely original book that is greater than the sum of its parts. For all of us who will never forget our school days and that special teacher, here is a book to give and to get.

One of Bill Peet's best stories 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This charming story is certain to bring a smile to your face. I love it even more than my son does. The drawings are delightfully done. Bill Peet is one of the very rare children's book authors who are able to produce both an excellent story and great pictures. All of his books are good, but some are better than others; Cyrus is one of his best.

You don't see kids' boks like this too often. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've read elsewhere that this book is about resisting peer pressure. That sub-story is over in the first few pages and really does little but set the scene. What this story is really about is courage, self-sacrifice, and the protection of innocent life against a world that often is far too dangerous. Many adults could benefit from giving this a read and taking it to heart, and yet it's not preachy or over the heads of the children it is targetted towards. Add to this the absolutely gorgeous colored-pencil artwork (Bill Peet worked for Disney for a while; his character designs give the original 101 Dalmations and the Sword in the Stone much of their charm) and some truly memorable characters, and you have my favorite children's book, ever.

Editorial Review:

A shark accuses Cyrus of cowardice because he won't sink any ships. The kindly sea serpent almost succumbs to peer pressure, but learns at last to be himself.
