The Adventures of Captain Underpants (The first epic novel) 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Captain Underpants started in book 1. It all began when a mean old principal named Mr. Krupp made 2 students, George and Harold, his slaves for pulling a big prank. Until they got a 3-D hypno ring and messed with Mr. Krupp's brain, and told him he was a famous super hero named Captain Underpants (Even though he had no super powers). So he goes off in his undies and tries to fight villainous bad-guys. When all of the sudden he ran into some robots trying to steal gems. Will he get them? Buy the book to find out. I give this book a 5 star because it is humorous and fun for children to read.

Editorial Review:

When Dav Pilkey began drawing pictures of an underwear-clad, wedgie-giving superhero as a second grader, his teacher said, "You'd better start taking life more seriously, because you can't spend the rest of your days making silly books!" Luckily for us, Dav didn't listen, and Captain Underpants was born. Now, kids everywhere can enjoy this special edition of the book that started it all--with an awesome lenticular cover and a super-cool value-added component that's so amazing, so fun, and so top-secret that you'll just have to buy it to find out!

Lovely and enchanting book 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Created by classic former Disney artist Bill Peet, Whingdingdilly is a fun and beautiful book featuring an endearing hero, Scamp the dog. Scamp, unhappy with being a "plain" dog, wishes to be more interesting in order to attract attention and be more popular. A disastrous encounter with a witch turns Scamp into a fantastic creature known as a whingdingdilly, which has to be seen to be believed. During the course of his adventures, Scamp learns that popularity isn't all it's cracked up to be and that he is loved for just being himself. Filled with Bill Peet's wonderful artwork, this is an absolutely charming book that belongs in everyone's collection of books for young readers.

It Struck a Chord With An Adopted Child 5 out of 5 stars.

Bill Peet's THE WHINGDINGDILLY was our very "unbookish" oldest son's favorite book as a child. At age four he wanted my wife or me to read it to him over and over again. (And he enjoyed pronouncing the title of the book when he asked.) By age six or seven he was reading it to himself and his younger brother. To him there was something absolutely captivating about it. My theory is that, because our oldest son was adopted, from an early age he had unverbalized concerns about his identity. And THE WHINGDINGDILLY is about identity, and being happy with who you are. This child is now 31 and recently had the pleasure of introducing his older daughter to this great book (a present from her grandparents!).

Editorial Review:

Scamp learns to be content with his dog's life when Zildy the kooky witch turns him into a whing-dingdilly.

I love this book I did a book report on it. But I can't give it all five stars.I think if a little kid read it it would make them think that you can act like her.But I have to present my book report in two days. I love
this book though!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Junie B. Is A Hit With My Three! 5 out of 5 stars.

Our children love all the Junie B. books. The Junie B., First Grader (At Last!) was a hit with all of them. Our son related to the story because both he and Junie B. were First Graders - At last! at the same time.
His two sisters have also enjoyed the world of Miss Junie B. and I know you will too! It is an added bonus when both brother and sisters share an enjoyment in reading the same books.

Editorial Review:

A Junie B. Jones Book, #18

Hurray, hurray for a brand-new school year!

Only, for Junie B. Jones, things are not actually that pleasant. ’Cause first grade means having to get used to a whole new classroom. And a whole new teacher. And a whole new bunch of strange children. But here’s the worst thing of all: when Junie B. tries to read words on the chalkboard, she can’t seem to see what everyone else is seeing! Is it
possible she might actually end up wearing glasses?

A fitting conclusion to the series 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is the final chapter in Pierce's Circle of Magic series. When Briar discovers a street urchin with a strange new disease, he is quick to notify his teacher, Rosethorn. The sickness, later dubbed the Blue Pox, begins to spread and soon becomes a widespread epidemic. As hundreds of people die, Briar must work together with Rosethorn and Dedicate Crane to find a cure for the new disease. When Rosethorn catches the sickness, Briar races against time, desperate to find a cure before his teacher dies.

By the time this book rolls around most of the characters have been fully developed enough to be able to explore the plot more fully. As a result this book focuses mostly on the suspense of the race against time and on Briar's relationship with the usually aloof Rosethorn. Rather than dealing wholly with magic, the quartet of young mages is forced to face nature; in this case a plauge. This is by far the best of the series, it is worth it to read the other three just to get to this one. A true fantasy classic, don't miss out!

Editorial Review:

The stunning conclusion to the Circle of Magic quartet finds the young mages Sandry, Daja, Tris, and Briar facing their greatest challenge yet—a devastating plague that is sweeping Emelan.

Brother's aren't so bad after all 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This story, based on Polacco's on experiences as a child, tells how Tricia's older brother does everything faster and better than she can, but soon she discovers that brothers aren't so bad after all, at least sometimes. The pencil and marker cut-out illustrations show Polacco's expertise with the media, highlighting the expressions on the characters' faces and giving a glimpse as to the lengths young Tricia will go to try and best her brother. This autobiographical story looks at one facet of Polacco's life, one that most children can relate to and understand, that is, if they have rotten older siblings like Tricia's.

My Rotten Redheaded older Brother. 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved this book! It was hilarious! Trisha has a very mean older brother named Richard. Richard could do everything better than Trisha. He could: sit the longest, burp the loudest, get the dirtiest, run the fastest, climb the highest, and throw the farthest. Trisha was so angry! She wanted to be better at something than Richard. When she saw a shooting star she wished for something she could do better.
Her wish comes true-but you'll have to read the book to find out how!
Patricia Palacco is a great story teller. Sometimes she writes funny books and sometimes she writes sad and thoughtful books. All of her books are great!
by Rachel from Stockbridge Central School.

Editorial Review:

Patricia's freckled-faced older brother is always showing her up. Then he rubs it in with that extra-rotten, weasel-eyed, greeny-toothed grin of his. But one day, after Patricia finds something at which she can beat Richard, she becomes one of his biggest fans. Full color.

Like this series of books 5 out of 5 stars.

My, almost 7 year old, was having trouble reading this summer. Basically, he wanted nothing to do with it. Then, someone recommended this series of Ricky Ricotta's books and he finished 2 books in one week!

I highly recommend for any student who would rather be on the computer in or front of the t.v. The pictures keep them engaged, as well as the short chapters and funny titles.

GREAT Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My son is 7 years old and absolutely loves these books. When he started reading this series we took turns reading (he would read two pages and I would read one page). He enjoys Ricky and his robot so much that he will just pick up the book and read alone. This is a great series to get boys interested in reading. Dav Pilkey is one of my son's favorite authors thanks to Captain Underpants and Ricky Ricotta.

Editorial Review:

Not for Children!!/Parent review 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I asked his teacher for a copy of this book and a the next one the class was reading
"Dogsong". I ended up going before the schoolboard to have this book removed from the class.

Dogsong is about a 14yo boy who drops out of school and assists in a suicide. The book contains misleading timelines. It takes place in the 1980's. There is reference to
poligamy,
suicide,
assisted suicide,
9+ cats of animal abuse,
cannabolism,
self mutilation,
mercy killings,
killing an unborn child...

"A mother sits with a strangulation string to kill her starving children",
a young teenage girl tries to kill herself becuase she is unwed and pregnant. She gives birth to a stillborn child "from the folds of her skin". She births with "her body writhing forwards and backwards" and delivers right in front of this 14yo boy. He takes the baby out into the snow and leaves it there for the animals to eat. He doesn't even try to wrap it or bury it. Both kids meet no consiquences for killing the baby, let alone all the other illegal acts.
There is also a reference about cannabolism;"Old mother can we eat you until the deer come bacK?.The dear came back that day and we did not have to eat our old dear mother."

The two kids head north as far as they can go implying they will live together with no mention of marriage. The book ends before they reach their destination. This isn't even a good versus evil book. I can't belive it was even allowed to be rated as young adult fiction.

No child should read this book! There isn't a director in Hollywood that would put these images into a film. My son and several other children in his 6th grade class are reading alternate reading material.

As parents we monitor what they see on tv, internet, and in video games. I never thought I would have to monitor what my child read in school. This book really bothers me weeks after I read it and went before the board. Reviews say it is enviromental and about survival. The boy has a father. He left his father to live with an older man. He drops out of school. He thinks there is a lack of game because of the snowmobiles. He wants to help bring the old ways back to the Inuit people, but instead of trying to change his people he decides to run with a dog sled as far north as he can possibly travel.

I wonder how the Inuit People feel about this book.

Editorial Review:

Inspired by an Eskimo shaman, Russel Suskitt takes a dog team and sled to escape the modern ways of his village and to find his own "song" of himself. "Enough gritty realism to satisfy the most adventure-hungry readers."--School Library Journal.

Or can he? 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Johnny Maxwell, an ordinary boy who has to deal with a possible divorce of his parents, is thrust into an adventure where he has to save an alien race. Not only does he have to deal with the divorce, but he also has to save the aliens while he is sick. Johnny's friend Wobbler, a computer hacker, gives Johnny a copy of the game, "Only you can Save Mankind," a game where you are the last person left to kill of the alien Scree Wee fleets. After nearly beating one of the hardest levels, a message appears on the screen, apparently sent by the attacking aliens. They surrender and ask for safe conduct. Johnny agrees having no idea what he is getting into.

This book is a very interesting with apt humor and it nicely explains Johnny's school life and his likes and dislikes. I also think that Wobbler is represented well. Another thing this book does is show what kids really do instead of what their parents think they do. Terry Pratchett does a good job with this aspect and handles how Johnny matures in the end of the book and does what he has to, not what is easy.

Editorial Review:

It's just a game . . . isn't it?

The alien spaceship is in his sights. His finger is on the Fire button. Johnny Maxwell is about to set the new high score on the computer game Only You Can Save Mankind.

Suddenly, a message appears:
We wish to talk. We surrender.

But the aliens aren't supposed to surrender—they're supposed to die!
