Daughter loves these stories! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

My 6 year old daughter just loves the Junie B. Jones stories, and as the person that reads them to her, so do I. The stories are entertaining, easy to read a chapter or 2 a night and the themes are something that a 5 or 6 year old girl can identify with.

Junie B. Jones should not be taken as Shakespeare! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Both of my children have grown up with Junie B. Jones. I am a certified elementary school teacher, and I get as much joy from Junie B. Jones as my kids do. We all laugh at her, and we all talk about how much trouble they would get into if they did the things that Junie B. Jones does. Children understand that Junie B. Jones is a character in a story. Children understand that the things she does are wrong. We should all be happy that Barbara Park has created a character who has inspired so many children to want to read! Afterall, isn't that the goal? We should get down off of our pedastools and realize that this is not Shakespeare or rocket science, and we are not going to create any criminals from reading about Junie B. Jones. What we will create are READERS.

Editorial Review:

Junie B. is a very grown-up little lady. So how come everyone treats her like a baby? It's not fair. But Junie B. knows just how to fix the situation. Her aunt Flo is getting married. What a perfect chance for Junie B. to show everyone how grown-up she is! Too bad she wasn't picked to be the flower girl in the wedding so she could really show off. But surely Junie B. can still find some way to get everyone's attention.

classic Parr 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Another great book from a great author. Silly illustrations & good text make fun reading with kids. This book follows the same pattern as Parr's The Mommy Book, The Daddy Book, etc. which makes it familiar for kids with the whole collection. Lots of fun for Grampie, too...a sweet gift to help announce a first grandchild!

My grandson loves this book and so does his grandpa! 5 out of 5 stars.

My grandson just loves this book by Todd Parr...the colors are so bright and the pictures so simple but pure. We read this to him almost everyday. His grandpa is delighted that we bought this book for him to share with his grandson.

A fun book about Grandpas! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book features grandpa's doing all kinds of different things in fun, colorful illustrations. I bought this book for my daughter to give to her grandpa for Father's Day. There is even a page at the end of the book for you to put a picture of grandpa!!

Editorial Review:

DESCRIPTION: With his characteristic vibrant illustrations and simple but poignant text, Todd Parr celebrates the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren. From dancing grandmas and hula-hooping grandpas to grandmas and grandpas in wheelchairs and in nursing homes, these two books are a tribute to all the different kinds of grandparents in the world.

Our family favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My mom saved the original book for me, and we purchased a new copy (paperback) only after our suitcase containing the original hardback was stolen (!) Our girls (ages 3 and 7) adore this book - and so do we.

The book tells about the different animals on the farm. Over several pages, for example, Mrs. Provensen tell about the four cats who live at Maple Hill farm: Gooseberry, who is a good mother; Eggnog, who is beautiful but not interresting; Willow, who is old; and Max, who is big, likes cottage cheese, but is not very clever with his claws. In a series of drawings, we see what the cats do around the farm. The girls love it - they laugh and giggle and listen intently.

The dogs, horses, sheep, and chickens all get similar treatment. We give this book to friends, as it is off the mainstream 'radar' of good books: we are sure they won't have it, and we are sure their kids will love it as our do.

Editorial Review:

Who lives at Maple Hill Farm?

Two dogs, five horses, a pig, some geese, lots of chickens, a few cows, a few goats, several sheep, and four special cats -- these are the animals at Maple Hill Farm.

With simple text that is both affectionate and wry, and irresistible illustrations that burst with personality, Alice and Martin Provensen bring their barnyard friends to life for the delight of animal lovers both young and old.

Oh I wish I were an Oscar Mayer Wiener........ 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've always been a sucker for the underdogs in life. This book is about a sweet one who in the end teaches us about the real meaning of friendship. I've learned never to judge a book by its cover. This may look like a typical silly book with no thought behind it, but it's so much more! You see, it's about Oscar the dachshund (or as my kids call it - a wiener dog) who just wants to fit in with the other dogs in the neighborhood. They're always teasing him, and it doesn't help when his mother calls him "My little Vienna sausage" or makes him a hot dog bun costume for Halloween. However, Oscar doesn't give up and ends up saving the day and his new pals in the end. Now, wait just a minute! It's not as sappy as it sounds. There are so many funny details in the illustrations and text to enjoy - like the sentence: "Then Oscar showed up, looking quite frank." (Cracked me up!) Be sure to take your time when you come to the classroom scene at Obedience School - hilarious! The teacher reading a book entitled "Dogs who Hate Fleas and the Fleas Who Love Them". I especially liked the dog standing at the chalkboard, writing sentences..."I will not sniff my neighbor". What a cute tale!

Editorial Review:

Oscar is short, like all dachshunds, and all the other dogs make fun of him. On Halloween he takes more ridicule than ever in his hot-dog costume, but one brave act makes him a Grade-A hero.

Review by Simon P.S. 39 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Junie B., a young 6 year old girl, acts like a brat. One day when she takes her precious mittens to school... "Oh no! Somebody stole my mittens!!" she screams.

At first she thinks just taking a teddy bear backpack from the lost and found in the princilpal's office is a good idea. But when the principal figures out what she is doing he says, "No teddy bear backpack."

So if you are the kind of reader that likes characters who have to solve tough problems, this is the book for you. This book is great for second graders. Most kids think it is funny. Check out other books in the series like Junie B. Jones and A Little Monkey Business.

Junie B. Is Not a Crook by Barbara Park is just the book for you if you are sneaky. The lesson is that you can't just be sneaky. Something bad might happen to you.

The problem is that Junie B. keeps finding things and not putting them in the lost and found. Read the book to find out how she fixes her problem.

Do like characters that make thier ideas work? Do you like clever characters? If you do then this is the book for you.

Children's Christmas Gift 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This was a great Christmas gift for three young children who are fans of Peter Rabbit. Provided several gifts for each, and they can pass around and share. The small size of the books are something very young children (around three or four years of age) really like and can handle easily. The carrying case was also a hit.

A great alternative to the fairy tales stories 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It is nice to read books for a 3 year old that don't deal with wicked witches trying to harm pretty maidens and prince charmings saving the day. After watching the movie about Beatrix Potter my little girl said she wanted to read the Peter Rabbit books and I ordered this set. Each book is the perfect size for little hands with lots of pictures of animals and a gentle story without traumatizing stories. What a change from the plots of Snow White etc. I like those stories but night after night she is bound to have nightmares.

Editorial Review:

This is an attractively designed gift box with handle and gold-style clasp, suitable for a child's nursery. Containing the first 12 of "Beatrix Potter's 23 Original Peter Rabbit Tales" - "The Tales of Peter Rabbit"; "Squirrel Nutkin"; "The Tailor of Gloucester"; "Benjamin Bunny"; "Two Bad Mice"; "Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle"; "Mr. Jeremy Fisher"; "Tom Kitten"; "Jemima Puddle-Duck"; "The Flopsy Bunnies"; "Mrs. Tittlemouse" and "Timmy Tiptoes". It is the perfect christening or birth-gift.

A wonderful imaginative tale 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I just picked up this book secondhand and it is my first introduction to Bill Peet and I am sure to get more of his books! It reminds me of an old fashioned fairy tale with kings, dragons and knights and is a fun way to introduce my 3 year old to these "magic" concepts. It is a nice story with charming pictures - Droofus gets separated from the other dragons and becomes a kind, grass eating dragon. The king wants his head as a trophy and puts out a big reward. Droofus gets discovered by a young boy who decides Droofus must be a good dragon since he did not hurt the lamb and so the boy does not betray Droofus. Later Droofus gets a chance to repay the boy by helping on the farm. Eventually he does get discovered by the king and the knights, but the boy comes up with a way for the king to have Droofus's head without chopping it off! A sweet tale with lots of little lessons about kindness tucked in.

Editorial Review:

Droofus the kindly dragon has a price on his head, but the small boy who befriends him refuses to sell him to the king.

Great Fun. With Pictures. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Terry Pratchett's "Wee Free Men" in its original form has already been a wonderful appendix to the main Discworld book series, "Wee Free Men" being the first of the books written about Tiffany Aching, a young witch in-training and friend to the pictsies (think of drunken, thieving, fighting pixies with Scots accents; but never never never refer to them as "pixies" -- it would be safer to call the Librarian a "monkey"). As with all the best books written for a "young people" audience, the book is immensely enjoyable by an intelligent adult. Even in its original, text-only version it was a great pleasure, and now that enjoyment is enhanced thanks to the vivid, evocative illustrations in this new edition. I suppose it is impossible for an illustrator to exactly match the visual impressions already held by a reader, but Stephen Player does a good job at capturing the spirit of the thing. In several cases, the illustrations are cleverly integrated into the text, not presented merely as decorations.

If a reader is new to Discworld, this would be a good introduction (some of the later Discworld novels in the main series benefit from a previous familiariy with that peculiar world, although it does not delve into elephants on the back of a giant, space-swimming turtles; but a couple of popular characters from the main Discworld novels are on hand). And for long-time Discworld fans, it is simply a delight.

Editorial Review:

There's trouble on the Aching farm: monsters in the river, headless horsemen in the lane—and Tiffany Aching's little brother has been stolen by the Queen of Fairies. Getting him back will require all of Tiffany's strength and determination (as well as a sturdy skillet) and the help of the rowdy clan of fightin', stealin' tiny blue-skinned pictsies known as the Wee Free Men!

Master storyteller and gifted comic Terry Pratchett is at his best in the adventures of Tiffany Aching and her tiny blue allies. Their first irresistible story comes to life in this lavishly illustrated edition, perfect for fans old and new.

Guts by Gary Paulsen 5 out of 5 stars.

Guts

Author: Gary Paulsen
Book review by Nate Scanlon

In Guts Gary Paulsen shares experiences from his own life. He has worked as an emergency worker where he helped people in plane crashes. On one of his adventures he came face to face with a moose. Paulsen used these experiences to write his books Hatchet and the other Brian books.

A marsh is where the story takes place in Guts. Brian had a lot of frustration trying to figure out how to find food. He wants to find a place to live to keep him safe from all the danger.

Brian is a smart and very confident kid. He is confident because he was confident about making it home. And he is smart because he built a fire.

The theme of this story is survival and self- Confidence. Brian has a lot of problems trying to find food and safe water. Some of the things Brian had to eat are things I would never want to eat. Brian also had to find shelter and wood to build a fire. He had to learn to live off the land too.

I think Gary Paulsen has had some pretty cool adventures. Some of the things he had to do were gross. If you have read Hatchet and the other Brian books you will like Guts.

Editorial Review:

Guess what -- Gary Paulsen was being kind to Brian. In Guts, Gary tells the real stories behind the Brian books, the stories of the adventures that inspired him to write Brian Robeson's story: working as an emergency volunteer; the death that inspired the pilot's death in Hatchet; plane crashes he has seen and near-misses of his own. He describes how he made his own bows and arrows, and takes readers on his first hunting trips, showing the wonder and solace of nature along with his hilarious mishaps and mistakes. He shares special memories, such as the night he attracted every mosquito in the county, or how he met the moose with a sense of humor, and the moose who made it personal. There's a handy chapter on "Eating Eyeballs and Guts or Starving: The Fine Art of Wilderness Nutrition." Recipes included. Readers may wonder how Gary Paulsen survived to write all of his books -- well, it took guts.
