Junie B - elf girl 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Another story in the series by Park! Keeps you laughing - and will take you down memory lane as Junie B. gets ready for Christmas & will remind you of ALL those "fun" lyrics we made up to Christmas songs! She's still irrepressible & even though her language is "becoming more adult" there are still enough "Junie B.-isms" to keep you in stitches. If you're collecting the series, get going to the cash register!

Great Holiday Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Junie B. does it again...she makes us laugh during one of the most memorable holidays in a young child's life!! We see a soft side of Junie B. which rarely shows itself, but allows us to get to know her that much more AND teaches us a life lesson! My daughter and I loved reading this together!

Editorial Review:

It’s holiday time, and Room One is doing lots of fun things to celebrate.
Like making elf costumes! And singing joyful songs! Only, how can Junie B. enjoy the festivities when Tattletale May keeps ruining her holiday glee? And here is the worst part of all! When everyone picks names for Secret Santa, Junie B. gets stuck with Tattletale you-know-who! It’s enough to fizzle your holiday spirit! Hmm . . . or is it? Maybe, just maybe, a Secret Santa gift is the perfect opportunity to give May exactly what she deserves.

I first met these Junie B. Jones books when tutoring elementary school students, They horrified me. When a book is presented to a child she assumes as she/he has every right to do, that these books are worthwhile. These books though, are filled with serious grammatical errors, poor punctuation, wrong spelling and slang. Sentence fragments abound in astonishing quantities, confusion in the correct use of parts of speech shows up repeatedly, mixing objects and subjects occurs again and again, and misspellings pop up. Stylistically also, the writing presents a poor example for young students to follow. A large proportion of the sentences commence with 'And', while the majority of paragraphs contain no more than one sentence each. The writing is choppy in a misguided effort to simplify the language, but the result of having sentence fragment after sentence fragment ends up confusing meaning. Do not use these books for children whose primary language is not English. Do not use them if you want your students of any origin to learn how to write well and read well-crafted prose. The presentation of a book to a child is a serious matter, for as you do it, the child assumes you are presenting something good, of which you and the school approve. They believe that they can safely emulate the kind of writing they read there. Excellent books throng in the market which commit none of the grammatical offenses of the Junie B. Jones books, and yet are funny and light-hearted, with delightful characters.Junie B. herself is depicted as an abusive young lady, happy to treat acquaintances and even friends and family with offensive dismissal and verbal abuse. She's never given any consequences for these behaviours. I personally do not like the example Junie B. sets, but it is the murder of the English tongue that I cannot bear. Books of this low standard are why neither Johnnie nor Junie can write.

Wordy, Poorly Written and Mired in Cliches 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Eragon's story is basically a Star Wars narrative set in a Tolkien fantasy world, while ripping off other fantasy elements from other works (and I'm only a very casual fantasy reader).

Indeed, Eragon is so lacking in originality that it is remarkably predictable; I ended up predicting almost all the plot twists, including the end of book two - before I even finished book one (just add the Star Wars like narrative with Eragon's accurate, not-ambiguous-enough Prophecy scene and you can figure out the rest).

Eragon's success lies partly with its hype but mostly with the public's (mostly the youngsters) apetite for fantasy, which has escalated thanks to Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings films.

While many may think Eragon is impressive for a 19 year old, it really isn't once you're aware of the multitude of teen fantasy nerds writing their own fantasy epics - two of my friends are among them, and you can find their works on the internet (granted, most of them are utter garbage, but the better works are as bad as Eragon). The only reason Eragon got published while being so unpolished is because his parents own a publishing company.

All in all, Eragon isn't terrible, just lengthy, mildly entertaining fluff for those who like anything fantasy and have time to kill.

Editorial Review:

Fifteen-year-old Eragon believes that he is merely a poor farm boy—until his destiny as a Dragon Rider is revealed. Gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a dangerous tapestry of magic, glory, and power. Now his choices could save—or destroy—the Empire.

Pass this book on from generation to generation! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a lovely book that comes in a sturdy, decorative, open-eneded box to protect the volume. Besides containing all of Beatrix Potter's wonderful children's stories, it has all of the original illustrations in one volume. This is the perfect "bedtime story" book, and it sits on the nightstand next to my 11-old-granddaughter's bed. She reads the stories to her 3-year-old sister every night, and is planning on continuing the tradition with her 1-year-old brother. She told me that she is enjoying the stories as much as her little sister!

I purchased this book as a gift for their family, and, as a proud grandmother, I can't think of anything that costs so little and yet gives so much. I would recommend this book for anyone! I am going to purchase another copy for my own house, just in case I have guests who show up with little ones. It's a perfect addition to anyone's library, and I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

This complete and unabridged collection contains all 23 of Beatrix Potter's Tales in one deluxe volume with all their original illustrations. The stories are arranged in the order in which they were first published to enable them to be read in proper sequence, as several are linked together by events and characters. A section at the end of the book contains four additional works by Beatrix Potter that were not published in her own lifetime.

I bought the first, second and third boxed sets of Junie B Jones books for my granddaughter, who is 5. She can read them, but also likes for her mom to read them to her at night before she goes to sleep. They are funny, interesting and just a whole lot of fun for one so young!!

Encouraged my son to read 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Although this isn't a great work of literature by any means.....it encouraged my 1st grader to read! He had to get everything Dave Pilkey wrote. He read all summer long! He's in 2nd greade now and has moved on to chapter books, but every once and a while the Captain Underpants books come off the shelf again!

My 10 year old has always enjoyed Dav Pilkey books..... 4 out of 5 stars.

My son has enjoyed listening to Dav Pilkey books for years. We would read them to him as an infant, toddler and now he loves to read them himself. He has read the books Dav Pilkey wrote for school age children, all of them. The "Book O' Fun" books, he really has appreciated the activities included in the fun pack books, based on "The Captain Underpants Series." He is especially fond of the step by step examples given for drawing the different characters. We would recommend any of Dav Pilkey books. Your child can grow with the wide range of creative books Dav Pilkey has published. I suggest parents browse Dav Pilkey's various book collection and maybe even give him a try.

Editorial Review:

Fans of Dav Pilkey¹s Captain Underpants series will have tons o¹ fun with this activity book featuring George, Harold, Captain Underpants and the bad guys from the first four books. Readers can test their knowledge with puzzles, games, cool comics, drawing tips, trivia, and more! They can also create their own comic strips, just like Dav Pilkey does. And of course there are plenty of cheesy jokes, guaranteeing lots-o-laffs!

My husband loved the books!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

The Inheritance Cycle is great and I am looking forward to the next book! 5 out of 5 stars.

(10-year old)
I enjoy this series because I've always loved magical books with just a pinch of mystery. The author also created a world where dragons or other animals, magical or non-magical, could communicate with humans. That supports my love for animals and my interest in magical animals. All the books so far have also demonstrated that you have to keep going at something to become an expert at it. The Inheritance Cycle series has surprises around the corner and twists at the end. This book is one of the greatest books I've ever read, mostly because the author has such a creative imagination. I think everybody should at least try this series.

A Value Purchase of a Fantastic Fantasy Series 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent way to purchase the initial two books in the ongoing Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini.

My only quibble is the boxed set has no additional features to entice a reader who has previously purchased the books separately. Though it seemingly eliminates one market of readers/collectors, the avenue is open for those wishing to explore the books at a nice price.

Cornwall Middle School-sixth grader 4 out of 5 stars.

By Noah

Brian's winter by Gary Paulsen is great, suspenseful, intense, and enjoyable book. It is an awesome book especially if you like adventurous or survival books. In this book Brian endures many animals such as a skunk who he becomes very fond of her and names her Betty he also comes to face with wolves, deer, and the most dangerous one of them all a moose which attacked him during his hunt. Brian uses his knowledge of the wilderness to survive. He also uses his memories too help design bows, arrows, and even arrowheads. He got used too living in the wilderness so he worked on new hunting techniques. He also learned how too make his shelter more secure by packing the walls with mud making it water tight and nearly air tight. This is a great sequel to the book Hatchet. Brian is a great character considering he gives the book a lot of suspense. During the time Brian was in the woods he learned many useful things such as how to carve an animal which is a good thing considering he as improved his hunting skills. The book Brian's winter was a great book I would definitely recommend it to anyone who liked Hatchet or likes adventurous or survival books.

Editorial Review:

In Hatchet, 13-year-old Brian Robeson learned to survive alone in the Canadian wilderness, armed only with his hatchet. He was rescued at the end of the summer. Brian's Winter begins where Hatchet might have ended: Brian is not rescued, but must build on his survival skills to face his deadliest enemy--a northern winter.

WHY WOULD YOU ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO READ THIS?? 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 20 people found this review helpful.

My daughter got this for her birthday. I hated this book!! The story is fine. Maybe kids might get something deep from this but I doubt it. From the first page, the characters are all dark and ugly to each other. There is no respect shown for any authority figure in the book from parents to teachers. There is no love or respect between any siblings. There are plenty of cuss words throughout the book. There are illusions to a child/teacher inappropriate relationship. There is a whole discussion about God d---- people to h---. The words in this book can't be typed in this review, so why would you allow your child to read them?? The death of the child holds no meaning, because I didn't feel anything for any of the characters and there's no great lesson in the death either. There are lots of references to killing people "by the childen"! Such things like "I'd like to kill him/her" said repeatedly, like it's ok to say that. The parents are portrayed as insignificant and stupid. There are illusions that the boy may turn out gay because he draws. There are lots of mean remarks about fat people. I have no idea how this book got an award and why it has 800 star reviews. I only know I am sick that my daughter got this book as a gift and read it before I checked it out. There is nothing edifying in this book whatsoever and I'm probably on damage control for the next 6 months with my child.

Editorial Review:

All summer, Jess pushed himself to be the fastest boy in the fifth grade, and when the year's first school-yard race was run, he was going to win.But his victory was stolen by a newcomer, by a girl, one who didn't even know enough to stay on the girls' side of the playground. Then, unexpectedly, Jess finds himself sticking up for Leslie, for the girl who breaks rules and wins races. The friendship between the two grows as Jess guides the city girl through the pitfalls of life in their small, rural town, and Leslie draws him into the world of imaginations world of magic and ceremony called Terabithia. Here, Leslie and Jess rule supreme among the oaks and evergreens, safe from the bullies and ridicule of the mundane world. Safe until an unforeseen tragedy forces Jess to reign in Terabithia alone, and both worlds are forever changed.

In this poignant, beautifully rendered novel, Katherine Paterson weaves a powerful story of friendship and courage.
