We love Mudge! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

These funny, easy to read chapter books are a favorite in our house. Henry and his drooling dog, Mudge are the best of friends and love one another tremendously. In this story, Henry and Mudge learn to love a bedraggled cat that looks like "mushed prunes". The illustrations add to the humor of the story.

one of our favorite Henry & Mudge stories 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of our favorites - for the whole family. We like the humor and thoughtfulness of the story. This one is on our top 10 list from the series

My Daughter Loves This 5 out of 5 stars.

Another in the series of Henry and Mudge's adventures. My little one loves this and the rest of the books. I would recommend this for a first/second grader. The stories are interesting and challenging to read for that level. She loves them.

Editorial Review:

Henry and his 180-pound dog Mudge are best friends forever. And in this eighth book of their adventures, they make friends with a scruffy but lovable cat.

never too old for a party 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Mr. Putter really wants to have a party for his birthday but he thinks that he is too old. He waits and waits for his friend from next door to come over with a surprise! When she arrives he finds that his birthday wish has come true. She brought cake, balloons and a gift! Happy Birthday Mr. Putter!

The cartoon- like illustrations in the book are really funny. Tabby is a cute kitty that always has a cute expression on her face.

This is a great book for early readers. There are pictures on every page and only a few sentences to each page as well.

Another wonderful Mr. Putter and Tabby 5 out of 5 stars.

Mr. Putter decides he wants to celebrate his birthday in spite of being "too old" to do so. The humor comes to you through the story and the drawings.

Editorial Review:

Mr. Putter is sure he is too old for birthday celebrations. And that means he's also too old for model planes and balloons and candles and cake. So on his special day, he invites Mrs. Teaberry and Zeke over for a quiet cup of tea. But--good heavens!--what could possibly be taking them so long to arrive?

Wonderful illustrations - George is back! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

For those who don't already know, Curious George is the beloved monkey hero of H.A. Rey's children's books. Mr. Rey (along with help from his wife Margret) wrote and illustrated seven of the Curious George books. The "original seven" are available individually or all-in-one as part of "The Complete Adventures of Curious George, which should be the first "George" books one should read - they are still the best by far. But for true fans of Curious George, those seven books just aren't enough. Since H.A. Rey's passing away several years ago, attempts have been made to continue the series; some more successful than others - but none really matching the originals. Often those "new adventure" books have been formulaic and even poorly illustrated. Although I haven't read all of the "new" George books, one of the better ones is "Curious George's Dream" - that's one of the few I thought was worthy of the "originals", even though still not quite up to the H.A. Rey standard. So how does this latest effort, "Curious George in the Big City", compare?

Well as you could tell from the title I used here, the illustrations are fabulous. Martha Weston is not only a talented illustrator, but it's clear that she loves Curious George - and has made every effort to re-create the world that H.A. Rey brought to life so brilliantly. While it would be impossible for her to "be" H.A. Rey, these drawings are as close to the originals as anyone could ever hope. Yes, when I look at these drawings, I know that George is back! Almost every picture is incredibly well drawn; George is very cute and expressive (looking very much like the George in "CG Takes a Job" and later H.A. Rey books), and the background settings look as though they were drawn by H.A. himself (highest possible praise!). As far as the story goes (which was evidently NOT written by Ms. Weston and is uncredited), well it's formulaic and not nearly as creative as the stories of H.A. Rey's "original seven". At least the prose does follow the original H.A. Rey writing style (beginning each story with "This is George", etc.). The plot is definitely lacking in this one (compared with the originals), but the for serious CG fans, the drawings are worth the price of the book. In fact the cover illustration alone is worth the price: with George waving from the top of the Empire State building (a nod to "King Kong"?) with all of New York City including the WORLD TRADE TOWERS(!) in the background. It's hard not to get emotional seeing this cover, considering what happened the very month this book was first published (September 2001). But seeing the cover takes us to a happier, more peaceful time, that's something George has always been able to do for children and everyone else - to provide a calming effect and make us smile, even when we deal with so many difficult times. Yes - thanks to Martha Weston, our George is back, and the World Trade Towers are back too. For that we can be very thankful, and should buy this book! I hope that Ms. Weston will continue to illustrate George's further adventures; perhaps it would be even better if she wrote the stories as well. I'll bet even H.A. and Margret Rey would approve.

Editorial Review:

While holiday shopping with the man with the yellow hat, George is accidentally swept away on a tour of the big city. Though he has fun seeing the tourist sites and all the sparkling decorations, what he enjoys most is being back together with his best friend.

Monkey Paints Room by Christopher and Daddy 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

News Flash!

In the skyscraper apartment building yesterday a monkey hired to wash windows painted a woman's apartment to look like an African jungle. Hired by the elevator man, he was warned not to get too curious but to stick to his work.

At first the monkey, at the time of this report we do not yet know his name, worked without even looking in the windows. But when he got to an apartment being painted, according to the painters we questioned, he got too curious, stopped working, and watched the painters.

When the painters left for lunch the monkey entered the apartment and used their paint to recreate his native African environment on the walls and furniture coverings of the apartment, complete with palm trees, butterflies, birds, two leopards, one zebra, one giraffe, grass, bushes and a portrait of the "artist" playing in the trees.

Returning from lunch the painters discovered the monkey finishing his creation. The painters, with the apartment owner and the elevator man, chased the monkey down the fire escape.

Forgetting that concrete was much harder than the African jungle ground, the monkey made a foolish leap to the pavement and broke his leg. An ambulance arrived and took the monkey to the hospital where, at press time, he is receiving medical treatment pending identification.

The woman whose apartment he painted said, "He got what he deserved! Making my apartment into a jungle, indeed!" and the elevator man added, "I told him he would get into trouble (if) he was too curious."

If you want to learn not to be too curious, to see how a monkey got hired as a window washer, to find out whether the monkey survives the hospital and to enjoy all of the other funny stuff this little monkey does, then read "Curious George Takes a Job!" A very funny book!

Very educational 5 out of 5 stars.

Reviewed by Cayden Aures (age 4) and Mom for Reader Views (12/08)

"Clouds" is part of the "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series" of books. In it you will learn about all of the different types of clouds, the meanings of their names, and what kind of weather they will bring. At the end of the book are more facts about clouds and instructions for a project to make your own cloud.

Cayden: "I liked learning about the different kinds of clouds. All of the ones that are high in the sky start with the `Cirr' sound. I can't remember how to say the one that bring bad storms because it is a really hard word but I know what the cloud looks like. The book said that if you see one to run inside fast because it will cause a bad storm. I really liked that you read this book to me mommy. Thank you for teaching me about clouds!"

Editorial Review:

Do you ever wake up and wonder what the weather will be? Instead of turning on the TV to find out, you can just look out your window at the clouds. How do you know what type of clouds can forecast a change of weather? Read and find out.

A New Look at Magic 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When a person who has read numerous novels of fantasy and science fiction first begins to read "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" it may be difficult to align with J.K. Rowling's universe. Rather than build upon existing mythology, J.K. Rowling started from scratch and created a self-consistent universe unique from all others. The result is that some readers may initially attempt to fit their paradigms of magic, wizardry and witchcraft to Rowling's story, and become frustrated until they wipe away those paradigms. It is for this reason that children enjoy Rowling's universe so well. They have yet to acquire the preconceived notions of adults, and Harry Potter is so fun to read that they fall into the story immediately.

When Harry was a baby he encountered Voldemort, considered to be an evil wizard. Voldemort was nearly destroyed in the encounter and Harry Potter became famous, even though he was removed from the world of magic until he turned 10 years old. Unfortunately, Harry's parents did not survive the encounter and thus Harry came to live with his cruel aunt and uncle, both "muggles" who despised and denied the existence of magic.

Harry Potter is stereotypical of the classic nerd. He wears broken glasses, his clothes fit poorly, and he is put down by his aunt and uncle. Into this rather mundane and pitiless world comes a mysterious letter from a place called "Hogwart's. " Suddenly Harry realizes there is more to the world than living under the stairs, and we travel the road to knowledge and a better life with Harry because we want to BE Harry.

Harry attends the first year of seven years at Hogwart's school, and learns there is a world of magic that exists all around, but which is protected by a multitude of resources lest muggles become alarmed. Harry learns much about magic and that there are mysteries in the world of magic that affect him. Harry also begins to learn the amount of magical ability that he has inherited from his parents, and that with that power he has the ability to control the outcome of situations.

J.K. Rowling has written a book that compares favorably with other children's book. Her characters are likable and accessible, and her world is fun. There are moments of amusement and moments of fear, and children of all ages should find this book a treat. Highly recommended reading for anyone over the age of 8 years old.

Adorable and fun! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Henry buys a spy kit. He and his dog, Mudge, canvas the neighborhood to "flirt with danger" and "steal secrets". One day Henry finds a secret code and is determined to crack it. Funny, adorable, irresistable Mudge is a favorite at house! He can even get my reluctant reader eager to see what happens next. Easy reading level with short chapters gives the hesitant reader a real sense of accomplishment.

NEPHEW LOVED THIS ONE TOO 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought a bunch of these for my 9 year old nephew who was 7 and he loved them. This one he really liked. He enjoyed reading about the adventures of Henry and Mudge. These books are fun, enjoyable, entertaining, and easy to read. I've read some myself and my son Ramon who is now in second grade loves them too. His cousin loves them as a second grader now he loves them. These are great starter books to help kids on their way to reading. They really motivate kids to read because of the funny, and entertaining stories.

Editorial Review:

With his new spy kit and his faithful sidekick Mudge, Henry is ready to look for clues, steal secrets, and flirt with danger. One of the first things Henry and Mudge find is a coded message -- could there be another spy in the neighborhood?

In this book Henry and his big dog, Mudge, enjoy the escapades of fall. One of the best in the Curious George series. 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In this story George and his friend visit the zoo to see a new exhibit. George witnesses a zoo keeper feeding the seals and decides it would be fun to share his snack with the other animals. Because George can't read the signs by the animal cages he doesn't know that you should not feed the animals. After giving the zoo keepers a merry chase he is caught and told that feeding the animals things they shouldn't eat can make them sick. George feels bad and makes up for it by helping the zoo keepers with the new exhibit. Excellent story and introduces a number of different animals for children to identify.

Editorial Review:

When a cuddly koala takes an interest in George's snack at the zoo, George is happy to share. In fact, George is happy to share with ALL the animals! Following a trail of peanuts, the zookeepers soon catch up with George and discover this little monkey is good for more than just mischief. The adventures of Curious George continue in an all-new series beginning in fall 1998 with eight new stories. Written and illustrated in the style of Margret and H. A. Rey, the books will appear in paperback (8 x 8") and hardcover editions and will feature the art of Vipah Interactive, the animators of HMI's Curious George CD-ROMs.
