Great for pre-schoolers! 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter is 3 and LOVES all of the Poppleton books. The three stories within one book combine fun and silliness with subtle points about friendship, sharing or kindness. Rylant's "Mr. Putter and Tabby..." series are also at the top of our Favorites List.

If you read the Poppleton series you will learn from how to he treats his friends and how his friends treat him. Do you want to be tough and helpful? Then read Poppleton. Even though Poppleton looses his temper sometimes, he is still a good character. So check for Poppleton in the library, at the store, or read it at school. Poppleton is the book for you.

Review by Maelle

If you want to learn about friendship, you should read Poppleton Forever. Poppleton learns if you're mean and you're sorry friends will usually forgive you.

If you ever thoght Poppleton doesn't loose his temper, you were wrong. He looses his temper in Poppleton Forever in the chapter Wallpaper. His friends didn't put up the wallpaper like he wanted. And Poppleton yelled at them. They were nice and came over just to help him. I don't think you should yell at your friends. It might make them not want to be his friends.

Read other Poppleton books. These are good for second graders and 6-7 year olds.

Editorial Review:

In three charming new stories, Poppleton the pig gets help from his friends when his new tree begins to wilt; when he catches a cold; and later, when he decides to wallpaper his house. Learning is great for Poppleton, but it's much better when it's done with friends. Full color.

Read to your Kids! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What can I say about the Henry And Mudge series? What can't I say about it? It's wonderful, delightful, sweet, and gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling when reading it aloud to your kids! I have read all of the books to my son when he was little and we both loved them. Mudge is big and lovabale and Henry is smart and kind and his parents give him good morals and values to live by. It's very funny and I would recommend this series (which are well into the 20's) for people with children between the ages of 3-5. I do have to say though, that I like the books that are illustrated by Sucie Stevenson the best. She draws Mudge with a much gentler expression to his face. All in all, I highly recommend Henry and Mudge! And if you do like this series, you may also enjoy the Mr. Putter series...also by Cynthia Rylant.

Editorial Review:

Henry and his 180-pound dog Mudge are best friends forever. And in this seventh book of their adventures, they spend a scary but reassuring day at the vet.

One of the best stories in the series 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I remember reading Peter Duck as a child and being a little disappointed. As a child the adventures of the Swallows & Amazons was best when they were as far away from adults as possible. Battling Uncle Jim / Captain Flint for his houseboat was one thing - going on a sea voyage with him in charge was quite another.

Re-reading the series as an adult, however, I see this in a whole new perspective. Simply put the actual story, and the story-telling, racks amongst the highest in the series. The scope of the book, running from the mouth of the broads which we come to love later in the series, right down to Crab Island in the Caribbean is wonderful. The intrigue and adventure is at a higher level to match too.

Arthur Ransome is one of the story tellers who believes in dealing with "bad people" head on - and in this tale, Black Jake and his crew are really some of the most despicable characters in children's literature. We always hope they will meet a sticky end. However, the writing is a little out of date now in terms of some derogatory words used for black people and Spaniards. I believe such language can be used as an important educational tool to explain why we no longer use these words (it should be noted that it is the rough characters that use these terms).

The book never comments on this as being "fictional". Of course they are all fictional tales, but this is fiction within fiction because we find out in other books that this was a tale made up by everyone. However, it is still written very realisitically and anyone with a love for sailing will find the chapters about the setup of the boat or the sailing down the North Sea and the English Channel wonderful.

Editorial Review:

The third book in Arthur Ransome's wonderful series for children, Peter Duck takes intrepid explorers John, Susan, Titty, and Roger Walker and fearsome Amazon pirates Nancy and Peggy Blackett onto the high seas. Under the command of the infamous Captain Flint (Nancy and Peggy's Uncle Jim), the children brave a real-life pirate and his cutthroat crew, fogy, sharks, and the ravenous crabs of Crab Island in the search of buried treasure.

Fun Installment in a Solid Series 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

A new kid on the block (staying in Dink's house!), a little action (a kidnap!), a little language lesson (French!), and a lot of teamwork (involving both children, parents, and authority figures) leads to another intriguing tale and a happy ending. Ron Roy's A-To-Z-Mysteries have proven quite successful in our household. I've now read all eleven installments to my four-year-old son, and he has found them immensely entertaining. Similarly, our best friend's daughter, an advanced elementary school reader, promptly consumed these books and deemed them enjoyable. Sure, like most of the chapter book series for little people, the plots tend to be marginally predictable -- conversely, these books weren't written for the parents (and the children seem to find the mysteries sufficiently compelling). I also find that, at a certain level, the fact that the characters in these mysteries are (reasonably) normal children confronting seemingly pedestrian criminals is a welcome break from my son's fascination with the preternatural and his preference for the less realistic (but highly entertaining) series such as the Secrets of Droon, Bailey School Kids, and the Magic Tree House. Also, unlike many of the series books, it does not seem critical to read the books in order (although we do). It's also nice that the protagonists -- Dink, Ruth Rose, and Josh -- play well together, think through difficult problems, exhibit good manners and, for the most part, display the type of vocabulary you won't mind if your children repeat.

Editorial Review:

K is for Kidnapped! Someone has kidnapped the king and queen of Socotra. For safety's sake, their son is staying with Dink until they are safe. But then the prince is kidnapped, too! Can Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose unmask the royals' enemies before it's too late? Or is the royal family of Socotra gone forever?

Where is the Jaguar's Jewel??? 1 out of 5 stars.

I didn't like this book . I disliked it because it was not a good book for a fifth grader. It's a good book for a first or second grader. The illustrations were my favorite part. They almost looked like cartoons, though they were a lot better looking. The illustrations were very suitable for the story. As you read it, you can tell it's fantasy.

I loved it, 5 out of 5 stars.

Series Review 5 out of 5 stars.

The "A to Z Mysteries" is very good. The series is about 3 kids: Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose. The author is Ron Roy. The kids solve mysteries. Book 10, "The Jaguar's Jewel," Book J, is my favorite. It is about Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose. They go to see a museum in Manhattan. There is a golden jaguar statue with gleaming red eyes. It has an emerald between its paws. Read the book to find out what else happens! The books are a little creepy. They have titles like "The Zombie Zone," and "The Deadly Dungeon."

Book J is my favorite because I love to go to museums. I enjoy this series because I have a Detective Agency. I enjoy my Agency.

Editorial Review:

Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose visit New York City! Dink's uncle is the curator of a museum with a dazzling new treasure--a statue of a jaguar cradling an emerald between its front paws. But when it's discovered that the emerald has been replaced with a fake, Dink's uncle is the chief suspect. He'll go to jail if Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose can't uncover the real thief!

Amazing New Book for Young Readers 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Pandora the cat; Seabold the dog; and Whistler, Lila, and Tiny, the orphaned mice, make-up the wonderful, Lighthouse Family. Together they live amongst each other in an old Lighthouse on the water, where they help to direct ships. However, one day Whistler and Lila hear the cries of a whale, a baby beluga whale named Sebastian, to be exact. Soon they have found that poor Sebastian has lost his Mother, and doesn't know where to find her. It's now up to Whistler and Lila, with the help of the rest of the Lighthouse Family, and a cranky old cormorant named Huck, to find Sebastian's Mother, and bring mama and baby together once again.

In this wonderful, adorable new series by Cynthia Rylant, we are introduced to various wonderful new animal characters, who are sure to rival those found in classics such as THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS. Each character is unique, and possesses his or her own quirks, yet they all share one thing in common, their love for each other, and caring nature. Filled with wonderful sketches by Preston McDaniels amongst almost every page, as well as a delightful plot that will please all young readers, THE WHALE is sure to be a hit.

Editorial Review:

Pandora, Seabold, Whistler, Lila, and Tiny have all been enjoying the love and comfort that being a family brings. It is a comfort they are unexpectedly reminded of when Whistler and Lila hear the cries of a lonely baby beluga whale named Sebastian. When they learn that he has lost his mama, the Lighthouse Family, with the help of a cranky but noble old cormorant named Huck, does all it can to bring Sebastian and his mother together again.

Great! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Having read all the books in English, I picked this up to see what I could make of it. It is extremely well-edited; it keeps the important plot points and preserves all the flavor of the original book. Reading it in French, I noticed some subtle (and really adorable) things that I missed in English, simply becuase I had to read more carefully. I kept my dictionary close at hand, but it really is written on the level of, probably, a 9-year-old.

"There will be light in every dark place" 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

In her usual lyrical style, Cynthia Rylant reminds us that all will be well as long as the important things in life are available: people who love us, pets curled up close, peach pie, and stars that shine. The rhyming text takes the readers through the year, outlining the constants that will come to pass: the stars will shine, flowers will bloom, birds will fly. And in her life-affirming worldview, Rylant reminds us that "there will be goodness...there will be grace." Beeke's soft watercolors illustrate family and friends and flowers and stars in all their colorful variety. This would be a lovely bedtime read-aloud -- or even a bedtime prayer -- for people of all ages.

Editorial Review:

Comforting affirmations of the goodness life offers.

Written in response to troubled times by one of the most celebrated children's book authors of all time, this comforting book is one that children and parents will want to return to when outside conflicts seem overwhelming. Rejoicing in the goodness of daily life with unforced spirituality, Cynthia Rylant's gentle verse becomes more powerful with each reading. Matching the pure reverence of the voice, Tiphanie Beeke's luminous watercolors bring a peaceful and uplifted feeling. Like a prayer, this is soothing at bedtime and is a meaningful gift for anyone facing a crisis or starting anew.

George on the move 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In this outing, the Man in the Yellow Hat gets George a bicycle to celebrate their third-year anniversary of living together. Riding the bike in front of their home leads George into a series of adventures that take him further and further from home. He starts off by helping the newspaper boy to deliver papers, and then becomes involved in floating paper boats down a little stream. After his bicycle is damaged in an accident, a traveling circus meets George and allows him to participate in their show for the night. While at the circus, he accidentally feeds an ostrich a bugle, and then redeems himself by tracking down and retrieving an escaped bear cub.

This book is a better than the series opener, and has the added bonus of including fairly detailed instructions on how to make a paper boat out of an old newspaper. The watercolor-style pictures are engaging, and the plot keeps moving along in unpredictable ways that should keep the interest of most children.

While I'm not a huge fan of this series, this is a decent book that should appeal to most kids.

Editorial Review:

When George, the monkey who lives with the man with the yellow hat, receives a bicycle as a present, his curiousity gets him in all kinds of trouble. Read by Barbara Bush. Book available.
