The Best (most controversial, honest &funny)novel in the history of Canada 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I love everything about this novel;it's hilarious, controversial and culturally accurate;I think both the novel and film are excellent-and I can't decide whether I prefer the book or the film.If you only see the movie, you miss out on terrific lines-and insight into Duddy's Uncle Benjy, who I gotta go with as my favorite cultural insight from any novel,"There used to be...some dignity in being against the synagogue. With a severe orthodox rabbi there were things to quarrel about. There was some pleasure. But this cream-puff of a synagogue, this religious drugstore, you might as well spend your life being against the Reader's Digest. They've taken all the mystery out of religion"(p.126).And gems like this give the character's(particularly in the Kravitz family) a real honest two dimensional character.Without it,the novel is reduced to Duddy's grandfather's motto:"A man without land is nothing".Obviously, this is not as easy-morally or otherwise-that simple;I wish Richler had writtten a sequel-and I like to think that Virgil, the epileptic he "uses" and Yvette, who tells Duddy she's
through speaking to him, would've come around.Richler-who was criticized as a self-hating Jew-doesn't deserve the label;I love his honesty, accuracy and sense of humor.

Editorial Review:

From Mordecai Richler, one of our greatest satirists, comes one of literature's most delightful characters, Duddy Kravitz -- in a novel that belongs in the pantheon of seminal twentieth century books.

Duddy -- the third generation of a Jewish immigrant family in Montreal -- is combative, amoral, scheming, a liar, and totally hilarious. From his street days tormenting teachers at the Jewish academy to his time hustling four jobs at once in a grand plan to "be somebody," Duddy learns about living -- and the lesson is an outrageous roller-coaster ride through the human comedy. As Richler turns his blistering commentary on love, money, and politics, The Apprenticeship Of Duddy Kravitz becomes a lesson for us all...in laughter and in life.

A wonderful book! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 5-year-old son thinks it is good because it teaches how the food gets digested. My 8-year-old daughter thinks she learned a lot from the book. I personally enjoy reading it too!

Digestion from Start to Finish 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is about a diner cook who loves to eat healthy food and we find out what happens to that food in this well written and illustrated book by Paul Showers and Edward Miller. There are little experiments and up close photos of digestive organs which can delightfully gross out your child while one reads and learns about this important system of the body.

My 4 year old daughter wants to be a doctor when she grows up so I am always on the look out for books about the body. I love all of the "Let's-Read-And-Find-Out Science" books and they have several very good books available regarding how the body works.

Editorial Review:

What happens to a hamburger and all the other food we eat? Digestion! In your mouth, your stomach, and your intestines, food is turned into bones and muscles and energy for your body to use. Carrots and peaches, eggs and pickles, all make you strong and healthy and help you grow.

An exciting children's boating adventure 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is the fifth of Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and Amazons" tales, although, in fact, it features not a single member of either the Swallows or the Amazons. Nor, indeed, is it set anywhere near the English Lake District. Instead, it describes the Norfolk Broads boating adventures of the two D's (first introduced to the reader in the previous book, "Winter Holiday").

The tale is set in the children's Easter holidays, just a few months after the events of the preceding book. In it, Dick and Dorothea are anxious to learn the rudiments of sailing so that they can take a more active part in the fun when they next meet up with the Swallows and Amazons. Dick is also keen to do some bird watching. It is almost inevitable, therefore, that soon after arriving in Norfolk, they find therefore themselves tangled in up in (and helping out with) the troubles of the Coot Club - a group of local (boat-mad) children dedicated to the protection of the Broads' unique bird population.

Ransome loved the Norfolk Broads with a passion that possibly even exceeded his love of the Lake District. In this book, he paints a portrait of Norfolk, its waterways and the people who live on or by them, making plain his love for this unique environment and its way of life. The story centres on his concerns over their continuing destruction through ever-increasing tourism (and the increasingly thoughtless actions of its visitors), a major problem even 65 years ago. (It is far worse now, of course!) Unlike his Lake District stories, this one uses the real names of the places that feature in it and revels in describing them. Indeed, the book reads almost like a guidebook at times, although you barely notice this, for it is never anything less that engaging in its content. As always, Ransome combines both narrative and instructive content with consummate ease, tempered here with an excitement to the events that unfold. He weaves a tale that is as enthralling and captivating as ever, that will appeal to lovers of good tales whatever their age. The author's own pen-and-ink drawings are as charming as ever, too.

This is one of the few Swallows and Amazons books that can be read earlier in the sequence than it appears (if you really must) without major detriment to either itself or the earlier stories (except, perhaps "Winter Holiday"). You do need to have read it before most of the ones that follow it, however, as the events described here feature heavily in later ones.

Editorial Review:

It all started with a coot's nest. Dorothy and Dick meet Tom Dodgeon, Port and Starboard, and three pirate salvagers all members of the Coot Club Bird Protection Society. When one of the coot's nests is disturbed by a shipful of Hullabaloos-rude holiday boaters - trouble begins. Frantic chases, calamitous boat collisions, and near drownings fill the pages of this exciting fifth addition to Ransome's classic children's series.

Some Very Good News 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It was a very good book. I like the characters because they are pretty and it is fun to hear their thoughts. The characters have good ideas. I also like books with pictures, they help me figure out what is going on in the story and this book has several pictures. I really liked the Junie B. Jones books and was looking for other books to read. I finally found the Cobble Street Cousins series and really enjoy them.

Editorial Review:

"Rebecca Rupp's magical tale . . . radiates a glow as golden as the dragon's scales." — BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE

Hannah, Zachary, and Sarah Emily are spending the summer at their great-aunt Mehitabel's house on faraway Lonely Island. There, in a cave hidden high above the ocean, they discover a fabulous creature: a glittering three-headed golden dragon with a kind heart, an unpredictable temper, and a memory that spans 20,000 years. Transported by the magic of the dragon's stories, the children meet Mei-lan, a young girl in ancient China; nineteenth-century cabin boy Jamie Pritchett; and, in more recent times, Hitty and her brother, Will, who survive a frightening plane crash on a desert island. In this fluidly written novel, Rebecca Rupp exploreswhat three children from the present learn from the past - and from anunlikely but wise and generous friend.

Wonderful Books for Little Girls 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My six year-old daughter loves this series and this new Cobble Street Cousins book was so enjoyable for her. The distinct and unique personalities of Lily, Tess, and Rosie are so intriguing to my child and these girls and the adult characters in this series are such wonderful role models for little girls. My daughter carefully studies the details of the beautiful illustrations, and talks about Lily, Tess, and Rosie as if they are her friends.

A JACOB TWO-TWO REVIEW 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Jacob Two-Two is one of the most imaginative stories I've read in a while. It reminds of being a kid in my carefree days. I have actually watered my mom's flowers an hour after she had and flooded her flowerbeds.
Basically, the story is about a 6 year-old boy who repeats everything twice just to be heard because he's the youngest out of five. Because he wants to be helpful, he wants to run an errand for the first time. He goes to Mr. Cooper, the greengrocer to get two pounds of firm, red tomatoes. After insulting Mr. Cooper (he didn't really insult Mr. Cooper, Mr. Cooper was just teasing him, but Jacob doesn't know that), he ran into Richmond Park to hide from the police. He was afraid the police might send him to jail for insulting a big person. Then, in Richmond Park he falls asleep into a crazy dream with the Hooded Fang, two super heroes, and a children's prison.

Editorial Review:

Poor Jacob Two-Two. Not only must he say everything twice just to be heard over his four brothers and sisters, but he finds himself the prisoner of the dreaded Hooded Fang. What had he done to deserve such a punishment? The worst crime of all – insulting a grown-up! Although he’s small, Jacob is not helpless, especially when The Infamous Two come to his aid.

Take your child to the circus and never leave the couch! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I love ALL of these H.A. Rey "Lift the Flap" books. They are just well done and appealing. His art work is so innocent and perfect for children, a rare thing in this modern world of distorted, cartoon caricature-type art so prevalent in children's books today. I have 3 children, ages 19, 10, and 4 and ALL of them loved these books at certain times in their childhoods. In this one, it is very colorful and varied in its pictures of what you would see at the circus. It is one of our favorites in this series. I have never given this book to a child and not seen the child enthralled by it and going through it again and again, opening the flaps each time. If you are looking for a sure-fire hit for a small child (2-6 or so) then get this book. They can enjoy it themselves, and even if it becomes a favorite that mom and dad have to read over and over and over....(it's happened to me lots of times!), Mom and Dad will love it too, because it is not too long to get tired of. It is a very good price, and while a paperback, I find it sturdy. Our first set was bought 14 yrs. ago or so, and just now we had to replace them. These new ones are made of much sturdier paper. I guarantee you will like this book! And your child will too.

In Peril on the Sea 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 11 people found this review helpful.

You don't know how lucky you are to be able to simply order this book; I had to contact a bookseller in London to buy it when I was 16. This one completed my set of "Swallows and Amazon" books, and maybe that's why I love it so much. Live the adventure that starts as just a wonderful, if tame few days and nights onboard a small sailing boat and turns into a struggle for survival, and a journey of growth, as each of the four children learns his or her own weaknesses and strengths. A children's book for all ages.

Editorial Review:

In this latest adventure (following Pigeon Post, winner of the Carnegie Medal), the Walker family has come to Harwich to wait for Commander Walker's return. As usual, the children can't stay away from boats, and this time they meet young Jim Brading, skipper of the well-found sloop Goblin. But fun turns to high drama when the anchor drags, and the four young sailors find themselves drifting out to sea - sweeping across to Holland in the midst of a full gale! As in all of Ransome's books, the emphasis is on self-reliance, courage, and resourcefulness. We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea is a story to warm any mariner's heart. Full of nautical lore and adventure, it will appeal to young armchair sailors and season
sailors alike.

Great Way to Teach Emotions 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book was not at all what I expected. At first I wasn't sure I would like it, but the response from my one year old son was excellent. He really enjoys learning about all the different emotions George feels. We also spend a lot of time talking about being naught and getting a time out. I think it helps a little with understanding.

Delightful! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Accompany George on a tour of feelings and emotions where he is sometimes sad, and sometime silly. "Are You Curious," explores the curiosity of children in an amusing and delightful way, "Have you ever been naughty, so that you need a time out?" This entertaining little board book will hold your babies interest through colorful illustrations and simple text. Birth and up.

The twins loved it! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

We bought this book for our slightly-more-than-2-year-old twin grandsons, and they loved it. At this age, they're more interested in identifying the pictures than following the story, but that's ok. There's something about the monkey image that is endlessly fascinating to them. All two-year-olds love monkeys. Go for it!

Editorial Review:

Do you ever feel like George? Are you curious? Are you mischievous? Curious kids can read along with their parents to see if they behave like the monkey best known for getting in and out of mischief.
