Fraud 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Buyer beware--this is written "in the style of HA Ray," i.e. by a faceless corporation and is illustrated by "Vipah Interactive" and was apparently written in the mid-90s. In other words, it's a scam. The story and illustrations both lack the charm and creativity of the original Curious George books--please avoid this attempt to cash in on the original.

Fun story 4 out of 5 stars.

My 18 month old loves to have this book read to her. She enjoys seeing George make pancakes, and especially loves when he adds blueberries. It is a cute book, and reminds me of those I read as a child.

My kids love this book 4 out of 5 stars.

While not as cute and creative as the original Curious George books, this one is decent. My kids don't mind at all and they love to read it over & over again.

Editorial Review:

Every year George and the Man with the Yellow Hat attend the pancake breakfast to benefit the children's hospital. Always curious, George finds his way to the pancake table. After making some of the most interesting pancakes the crowd has ever seen, George gets into even more monkey mischief. Activities include coloring, fun facts, and funny faces pancake recipe.

A Wonderful Book for a Beginning Reader! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My 1st grader just loves Henry and Mudge books. They are "chapter" books-- and not "baby" books. But, they are easy to read. (Easier than Magic Tree House, for example.) Plus, this series appeals to both boys and girls (but especially boys).

Note: you might want to purchase Henry And Mudge First Book before this book or with this book. It introduces the characters used in the rest of the series.

Enjoy!

NEPHEW & SON LOVED THESE BOOKS 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My nephew Wyatt Condon who is now 9 loved these books when he was in second grade. Now my youngest son Ramon who is 7 and in the second grade now loves them. He loves the stories, the illustrations and they are easy to read but not too babyish for children in 1st to 2nd grade. Henry and Mudge books are loved and enjoyed by both of these cousins.

Editorial Review:

What's wrong with Henry's new tree house?

In Henry and Mudge's twenty-first adventure, Henry's Uncle Jake has built him a tree house. Henry loves tree houses, but Mudge can't climb trees. What fun is a tree house if you can't share it with your best friend?

The Stars; A New Way to See Them 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great book for beginning star gazers. It is easy to read and does not overwhelm me with scientific information...just helps me find the stars and constellations and learn their names.

Best teaching astronomy book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The book is fun and easy. It is as good for adults, like me, as it is for any youth interested enough to use it. I have had more fun using it than any of my three large telescopes.

If you want to be able to go at night, look up and "know" the sky this book is a must. The constellations are drawn with shapes that make prefect sense. Once you use the book to find the shapes in the sky you will be able to find them on other nights without any problem because the shapes make figures that are very easy to remember. Taking the book out for 10-20 minutes a week is enough to learn the whole sky in less than a year. The only reason for it to take that long is because it takes a year for all of the constellations to cycle through. Anyone using this book will visually know the sky better than more than 90% of professional astronomers.

Now when I go out at night and look up, it is like looking at a group of old friends. You don't need to search for them you just know them when you see them.

If you want to learn the sky and constellations you can be confident this book will easily teach you.

Editorial Review:

The Stars: A New Way to See Them. By H.A. Rey. This remains our all-time favorite guide to learning the constellations. Written for older kids and adults, its simple style has made it a top seller for more than 40 years. Classy cartoon illustrations and star charts round out this fine guidebook. 160 pages, softcover.

My seven year old grandson loves this series! These books are well written and have topics that are interesting to kids, as well as informative. The stories are exciting and children can learn from them. Kids can understand and relate to the dialogue.

A great series 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter loves this whole series. They can be read by a 3rd grader without too much trouble and even while in the 2nd grade my daughter could figure out most of the books. They keep the same characters for the whole series and so kids can get attached to them. We will be in big trouble when we reach Z.

Level 2 readers are for kids reading independently 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Level 2 readers are for kids reading independently and Henry And Mudge And The Big Sleepover provides another Henry and Mudge story with fine short chapters, varied sentence structure, and adventure. Here Henry is invited to a sleepover party and nighttime adventures seem to assure nobody will get to sleep, especially when a father decides to participate. Sucie Stevenson's drawings are fun embellishments.

Cute story 3 out of 5 stars.

Nothing special. My 7 year old read it with no problem. She enjoys it and reads it regularly.

Editorial Review:

Henry and Mudge are going to a sleepover at Patrick's house! There's pizza and popcorn, games and monster movies...and Mudge even has his own sleeping bag (he's too big to share Henry's). But will anyone at this sleepover ever get to sleep?

Daughter loved it! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I wanted to get a beginner's chapter book for my almost 6-year-old daughter. I thought about Junie B. Jones or the Magic Tree House series, but I was turned off by Junie's poor grammar (or at least the author's attempt to make her sound like a "real" 6-year-old), and by the Magic Tree House's female character being "dreamy" while her brother was "logical". This book managed to avoid those caveats, while still being an entertaining read for my daughter. I wasn't sure at first if she could follow a chapter book on her own, with illustrations only appearing every 3 pages or so, so I read her the first two chapters last night. This morning, the first thing she reached for was that book. Instead of getting up and watching Saturday morning cartoons, she sat in bed, ate a banana, and finished her new book. I couldn't ask for anything better.

Editorial Review:

A is for author....  Dink writes to his favorite author, mystery writer Wallis Wallace, and invites him to visit Green Lawn. To Dink's amazement, Wallace says he'll come! But when the big day arrives, Wallace is nowhere to be found. The police think he just missed his plane, but Dink suspects foul play. It's up to Dink and his two best friends, Josh and Ruth Rose, to find the famous writer--before it's too late!

Henry and Mudge and the Forever Sea 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I picked this book out at our local library for my two year old daughter because she loves dogs and the beach. It turned out to be such a big hit that I am buying it! She of course can't read, but enjoyed the story and pictures very much. She loves Mudges playfullness and had just been to the beach recently so she could relate to Henry and his father playing in the water. The length of the story is just right also for her. It's a wonderful book and we are buying two more from the series besides this one!

Great Beach Reading for the Younger Set 5 out of 5 stars.

This particular books captures the essence of going on a trip to the beach: the anticipation, the long drive, the waves, the crabs. This book would also make a good read-aloud for a younger child about to go on a trip to the beach.

Note: you might want to purchase Henry And Mudge First Book before this book or with this book. It introduces the characters used in the rest of the series.

With this Level 2 focus on independent reading skills, kids will more readily move from beginning reader to enjoying more complex tales with paragraphs and short chapters. What better place to start than with Henry and Mudge & The Funny Lunch, Cynthia Rylant's zany story of kids determined to put together the best Mother's Day lunch ever ? against all odds?color drawings add to the appeal.

another Henry and Mudge 4 out of 5 stars.

Another Henry and Mudge... we love the series (have everything offered in paperback), but this one wasn't quite up "Henry and Mudge and the Green Time" or "Henry and Mudge and the Happy Cat". My son, nevertheless, wants to make me a funny lunch next Mother's Day. If you love the series, get it. If you are new to Henry and Mudge, start with some of the first books in the series.

Editorial Review:

Every year Henry and his dad (with help from Mudge, of course) make Henry's mother a funny lunch for Mother's Day. Shopping for their juicy, crunchy surprise is fun, and preparing it is even more fun. But sharing it with Henry's mother is the most fun of all!

Not as Good as the Other George Stories 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

My son LOVES trains, and he also loved the Curious George movie. He has several of the books based on the Rey's style, and the PS2 Curious George game.

Curious George Takes a Train is the first George book I've bought "sight unseen" (from Amazon.com). However, since my son loves both trains and George, I felt it was a great fit.

Granted, my son seems to like the book. Out of the four books illustrated/written in the Rey tradition, my son owns three by Martha Weston. The other--Curious George Goes to a Chocolate Factory--is illustrated by Vipah Interactive.

Weston is heavy on the black charcoal as it is (as seen in the shadowing of books like Curious George Visits a Toy Store), but she is *especially* heavy with the black illustrations in Curious George Takes a Train. In fact, it often looks as if a child has taken a black crayon and (no lie) colored vertical streaks of black right on top of the people!

It's very unattractive, in my opinion, but kids don't seem to notice these types of things. I also felt that the story was a bit harrowing for a George tale (a little boy runs from his father after a toy train, the gate closes behind him, and the boy almost goes out in front of the tracks--but George saves his life.)

The story is a bit quick...it goes from the Man with the Yellow Hat strolling off with Mrs. Needleman in the station to George climbing up and messing with the numbers and letters on the train schedule--and then off to saving the boy!

If your child is a train enthusiast who likes George, he/she will likely enjoy this book. However, as far as stories go--and illustrations--there are better books in this series, in my opinion.

Editorial Review:

Curious George heads to the train station to take a trip with the Man with the Yellow Hat, but when he tries to help out the station master, he gets himself into trouble. George finds himself a hiding place—only to discover that his help is really needed when a little boy's toy train is about to fall onto the tracks. NEW on inside and back covers: connect-the-dots, fun facts, and telling time activities.
