Two boys' review: A disappointing sequel to a fun pirate book 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This isn't a pirate book. This is a babysitting book with a guest appearance by Captain Braid Beard and his crew of seven.

What made the first book interesting -- Jeremy Jacob experiencing the highs and lows of life on a pirate ship -- is exactly why this book never takes off. The pirates come to Jeremy's house and there's just not much interesting to do or see there.

My sons -- ages 5 and 4 -- love to read about pirates during their bedtime. They'll ask me to reread their favorites but this book never garnered a second request.

In summary, I recommend "How I Became a Pirate" but advise you to leave this sequel on the shelf.

Editorial Review:

When the pirate crew turns up at Jeremy Jacob's house and accidentally wakes his baby sister, that wee scallywag howls louder than a storm on the high seas. Sure, there's buried treasure to be found, but nobody's digging up anything until Bonney Anne quits her caterwauling. So, quicker than you can say "scurvy dog," Braid Beard and his swashbuckling pirates become . . . babysitters? Blimey!

This hilarious companion to How I Became a Pirate reveals that minding the nursery can be even more terrifying than walking the plank--especially if you're a pirate.

Sabuda magic 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Robert Sabuda is a genius, no doubt about it. In this book there are dimensional fairies peeking from foliage, brownies hiding in corners, and trolls waiting to create trouble for passers-by. Some figures "magically" transform from one thing to another, just as we might imagine them to do in fairy tales. I give it only four stars because the engineering falls just a little short of the "wow" factor, and the text is somewhat depressing. Nonetheless, this and the Limited Edition version will certainly remain in my collection to be enjoyed for years to come.

Editorial Review:

Introducing a dazzling new series premiere! The world’s pop-up masters invite you to peek inside the fairy realm as it transforms before your eyes.

Open this entrancing book and meet Shakespeare’s Queen Titania, springing up with her silver wings aflutter. Further on, a crystalline elfin castle rises into the clouds, not far from some scary hobgoblins and trolls. And on a truly stunning spread, a humanoid magical tree spreads its branches to reveal a face within its foliage, while flowers unfold and rearrange their petals, turning into flower fairies. Visiting mythical beings around the world, from household brownies to the merfolk lurking deep below the sea, this breathtaking 3-D book, brimming with facts and fancy, will hold humans of all ages in its spell.

"Reader Beware, You're In For A Scare!" 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Yes that's right, gentle readers, the master of fright is back nearly after a whole decade with a new book series called Goosebumps: Horrrland for kids. The first new book is called "Revenge of the Living Dummy" and the second book is called "Creep from the Deep." The writing style is still the same, but that's what makes R. L. Stine so interesting. He wrties on kids level so that it is easy to read and undertand and his stories are so original and entertaining that I can't wait until the next book releases. (Which will be in June!) So, again, I'm very surprised that Goosebumps has finally awakened again after all these years! If Goosebumps: Horroland stays around long enough, it might be even better than the Harry Potter series, (in my opinioin!) but you never know if FOX might make an attempt to ressurect the show for the new series, (hey, I can dream, can't I?) So 'readers beware, you're in for a scare'!

Editorial Review:

Fright-master R.L. Stine invites you on an all-new, all-terrifying adventure!

The thrill ride begins when 12-year-old Britney Crosby encounters an old ventriloquist's dummy with a lively secret--and a wicked plan.

Just when she thinks the nightmare is over, Britney receives an invitation to an amusement park where everything is not as it seems. Who--or what--is summoning ordinary kids to HorrorLand? Britney and her friends must find out fast--or remain trapped forever in the scariest place on Earth.

Editorial Review:

Cookie Count is a mouth-watering book of lavish surprises -- a baker's bounty of ten pop-up spreads. Award-winner Robert Sabuda's intricate paper engineering, along with his whimsical art, creates a book that will be counted as a family favorite for years to come.

the potential in every thing 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"If I ran the circus" starts off with a boy and an empty lot. I had a lot similar to this near my childhood home. This book played perfectly into my wild imagination of what one could make out of a seemingly uninteresting place. It made me see things in a different way, the possibility that was in every place and every thing. This book is wonderful. Calm Sneelock is worked into the plan. (Isn't it just typical that kids think of shopkeepers as friends?) This book is a big part of my childhood and now I am happy to share it with my kids to help them see the potential in everything. One just needs to use a bit of imagination -- a lesson for young and old.

Charming, cheerful readers for little ones 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My kids and I came to know Little Bear through the cartoons on TV first. Perhaps part of the appeal of the books for my kids is that they know these stories well from the cartoon, but the books are much more engaging!

Best of all, unlike the cartoons, you have the amazing illustrations of Maurice Sendak. They give the books a timeless appeal.

Perfect to read to little ones, and an excellent reader for K-2.

Editorial Review:

As the Baudelaire orphans trudge up the dark stairway that leads to their new home, they can't help but wonder what lies above. Could this be the place where they will finally be safe?

In their luxurious new home, surely they will be able to relax. With some luck, Violet can finally enjoy inventing as a hobby. Unless, of course, she must invent a contraption in an attempt to free friends in danger. And Klaus may find time to enjoy reading in the Squalors' private library. That is, if he doesn't need the books to find one piece of vital information. And Sunny may be able to spend her time gleefully gnawing. Unless she needs to employ her extraordinary teeth to escape a terrifying trap.

What lies above is a mystery, but what is certain is that when you are living on the top floor of a tall apartment building, it's a long way down. The Baudelaires had best be prepared, just in case the penthouse apartment of 667 Dark Avenue presents a series of unfortunate events.

Goosebumps fan's favorite 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the favorite Goosebumps story of a 10-year old relative so I wanted to get her her own copy. She rates it highly.
A story of a young girl's experience at summer camp. Her peer problems seemed bad enough for her to think of faking her own death, but then her plan backfires and she almost drowns. Then she starts seeing things that cause her to act strange and increases her peer problems.
It is not my own interest and I feel kids today have enough strangeness in their lives without these scary things to wonder about, but perhaps they appreciate the safeness of their own world after reading about a more scary one.

Editorial Review:

Camp is supposed to be fun, but Sarah hates Camp Cold Lake. The lake is gross and slimy. And she's having a little trouble with her bunkmates. They hate her.So Sarah comes up with a plan. She'll pretend to drown -- then everyone will feel sorry for her.But things don't go exactly the way Sarah planned. Because down by the cold, dark lake someone is watching her. Stalking her. Someone with pale blue eyes. And a see-through body. . . .

Fun for kids. Tedious for adults 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

Ten Apples Up on Top is a good introduction to counting and addition for preschoolers. My 3-year-old loves it. He counts the apples on every page and never gets bored. Me, on the other hand - I would have liked the book to have more of a storyline.

Gosh I love this book! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Three animals compete in the first half of the book to see who can have the most apples on top of their head. During the second half of the book, they escape an angry mob, happily collide with an apple truck, and end up giving the entire town ten apples on their heads as well. (What fun! Ten apples up on top! We are not going to let them drop!)

This is a good book both for early readers, and for young children learning to talk. Very simple, rhyming vocabulary, of the sort with intuitive spellings (so much of English orthography is a mess...!)

Please note that I do not recommend the board book version at all. They cut out the entire second half of the book, as well as good parts of the first half. In addition, the board book is poorly constructed. Just wait and get the real version instead.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in color. A beginning Beginner Book, this ingenious story uses a vocabulary of only 75 different words. "A hilarious story in rhyme about a number of animals who could carry 10 apples on their heads."--Elementary English.

wonderful chidlren's story--with only one issue... 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The Cat In The Hat Comes Back (beginner books) is a great book for children just learning to read. The child is introduced to words that rhyme and the letters of the alphabet. The focus is clearly on children since the entire short story takes place while two young children are left at home while their mother goes "to the town." Moreover, the illustrations are wonderful.

The action begins when the two kids, one boy and one girl, are shoveling snow while their mother runs errands. Naturally, The Cat In The Hat returns to do more mischief and, quite conveniently, set up a story that teaches children the alphabet and rhyming words. After the cat makes a mess in the bathtub we are introduced to all his little helpers who are named from A to Z--great alphabet lesson! The story is made amusing for small children because the pink mess in the tub goes to their mother's dress, the wall and eventually all the snow outside! It's a silly premise; but it'll work for young children just learning to read. They'll like the humor of this.

Of course, Seuss also inserts plenty of words to teach children more vocabulary. Children are introduced to words like cold and warm, fun and done, dig and pig, news and shoes, whose and news--and more! Excellent!

I cannot help but notice that some people felt that the use of guns in the story (they help take away the pink snow mess) might lead children to conclude that guns are "OK." Unfortunately, these people have a good point. Dr. Seuss could have and should have used another method instead of guns to clean away the pink snow mess. I will take off one star for this: I would take off more but the rest of the book is so thoughtfully done that I can't go lower on my rating.

Overall, I recommend The Cat In The Hat Comes Back for parents to use as a tool to help very young children learn to read. The kids will love it; and hopefully some fond memories will be made when you sit down and read this with your children. I also recommend that you mention that guns are bad and maybe add that the guns in this book were special in that they couldn't hurt anybody.

All in all, great job, Dr. Seuss!
