My son loves it! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My 10 month old son loves having this read to him. He really responds to the colours and seems to enjoy the language. Its fun to read and it gets memorised very quickly. The board printing makes it very durable as Harry loves to turn the pages.

Editorial Review:

BIG R, little r,
what begins with R?
Rosy's red rhinoceros.
R...r...R

From Aunt Annie's Alligator to Rosy's red rhinoceros to a Zizzer-Zazzer-Zuzz, learning the alphabet is bound to be fun with Dr. Seuss. And with this small, sturdy board-book version of his classic ABC book (Dr. Seuss's ABC), even the tiniest tots can indulge in a little alphabetical education. Each letter is featured with Dr. Seuss's unmistakably nonsensical illustrations and text: "Lion with a lollipop," "Camel on the ceiling," "Uncle Ubb's umbrella and his underwear, too." The youngest readers-to-be will get lots of letter practice with the repetitive use of each letter and the easy-to-memorize rhythmic rhymes. Soon your favorite preschooler will be reading this book aloud to you! (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

The First "Home Alone" Drama 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Two small children, left home alone on a deary, rainy day, are startled by a home intruder--a giant, talking feline who proceeds to trash the house! This book should have damaged us forever, but it remains deliriously funny. It is left to the fish to be the voice of responsibility and everyone knows fishes are all wet!

This 1957 book brought compelling drama and conflict to the easy reader section of the library. The glimpse through the window shows that the mother is returning! What will she find? Thing 1 and Thing 2 running through the house, banging their kites around? Disaster! No spoilers in this review...get your own copy!

Although this has been made into a movie and an audio tape, I point out that although it's a great story, it's meant to be a book that the child can read. Translating it into other media is a bit like cheating.

Two boys' review: Simply, a classic 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This silly story centers around self-responsibility. The children panic because they know their mother won't be happy if she comes home and find the house a mess. The fish fluctuates between being an annoyance and a voice of reason.

The story stars a well-meaning cat who tries to release the children from an afternoon of boredom. He brings excitement, which quickly devolves into chaos...or so it seems.

This is a fun bedtime story, nothing more, nothing less. My sons weren't looking for a debate about latch-key children and abandonment. We'll leave those reviews to the sociology graduates.

If your children enjoy this book, I also recommend, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.

I couldn't imagine our children's bookshelf without these Dr. Suess books, too:

Green Eggs and Ham
How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Fun for kids and adults! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I forgot how much I loved this book until I began reading it for my 3-year-old. She loves it, and I love reading it to her (unlike the ELMO books which our daughter loves and I dread). You really can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss. The illustrations are imaginative and the writing is really a work of genius in children's literature. I can't recommend this highly enough.

The Greatest American Philosopher 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a mom of a 24 and an 8 year old (I know . . . big surprise) I am firmly of the opinion that Dr. Seuss is the greatest American philosopher! In this book he urges us to try things that we may be afraid of or even repelled by. Many folks think this book applies only to food but I think he is urging us to be more brave in all avenues of life. We need to listen to those around us urging us expand our horizons. I believe that if we go for it and 'take a bite of the egg and ham' then we too will say "Thank you, thank you Sam-I-am."

A GEM!!! MY ALL TIME FAVORITE CHILDREN'S BOOK (moooooore stars!!!!) 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I got this one as a child, back in the sixties. My copy is in Dutch and although a little weathered it's not falling apart yet.
The copy I'm reviewing here is a reprint that misses several spreads, but sad though it may be, if you don't know about it you won't miss it.
Richard Scarry shows different "people" (animals in clothes), all kinds of professions, how they interact and how one depends on the other. And in doing so he introduces a child to society where we all depend on one another.
More than anything else he was responsible that I grew up to be free minded and open spirited person. Whatever a human being does for a living, if he/she does it with love he will make your day.
A policeman, a baker, a newspaper man, a writer, photographer or singer, the postman, the bus driver. We all depend on one another. And as long as we try our best to understand that and accept and respect our fellow citizens we will be on the right path.
His drawings are world famous. They're sweet and funny without being too simplistic. No matter what family, the rabbits, the mice or the pigs, even the worm, they're all lovely characters with different personalities.
It has always been my first choice as a gift for kids.

This has to be the best pop-up book I have ever seen. Totally awesome. And, very reasonably priced.

Fantastic Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is amazing and the pop ups are numerous. It is very educational. I could see this being used by students doing projects on dinosaurs. A lot of information is packed into the book and each one of the pop ups. I facinated my grandkids from age 3 to 12. I would buy this book or others like it again.

Editorial Review:

From the world's preeminent paper engineers comes an awe-inspiring tribute to the world's most beloved extinct animals and their 180-million-year reign on the planet!

More than 35 complex and stunning pop-ups include a massive T. Rex that springs out, flashing a startling jawful of jagged teeth. Turn the page and a ravishing raptor unfurls and appears to fly off the edge of the book.

This breathtaking pop-up book offers up-to-the-minute information on more than 50 dinosaur species. Six multi-layered spreads each feature one spectacular, large pop-up and several booklets of smaller pop-ups and text.

Editorial Review:

The ingenious Robert Sabuda returns for yet another inspired pop-up book, a follow-up to The 12 Days of Christmas and The Christmas Alphabet, that retells Clement Clarke Moore's classic yuletide rhyme.

Sabuda remains a master of the medium, constructing a series of varied and well-engineered scenes: Santa pops in and out of the chimney, beds fold out, a window shade rises and falls, and, in a clever nod to Moore's not-a-creature-was-stirring text, it's a family of mice who are receiving Santa's nighttime visit. A pull-out tab even lets readers interact, when Santa's sleigh glides out on the clouds and over an intricately realized village. It's hard to pick a favorite scene here, but you can bet that kids will love the book's pop de résistance, in which Santa's lead reindeer nearly fly right up your nose (if they don't knock you out of your chair first).

The book's first-rate production and lively pop-ups are enough to recommend it, but Sabuda goes one better by showing the thoughtful restraint to make most of the pop-ups almost entirely white. A few accents of color catch your eye (Santa's red suit and silver pipe), but--as befits such a dynamic book--the visual focus stays on the action. (All ages) --Paul Hughes

The Lemony Snicket Who Wouldn't Stop Screaming 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 44 people found this review helpful.

This is the worst children's book I have read for a long time, and that's saying something, considering the junk that is on a market which I try to keep myself informed upon. Tell me something, Mr. Snicket: would you tolerate a book containing the level of prejudice yours contains, if its sentiments were antisemitic rather than antichristian? I am a Christian, but I stand up for the Jews when I hear antisemitic comments. You are obviously not interested in combating prejudice, but in promoting your own ideology at the expense of others. Why don't you find something more important to scream about than people confusing two holidays together, something like the plight of your people in Israel at this moment? I don't know why you should even care about the "real" meaning of Hanukkah since you are an atheist to begin with. And you seem to forget that there are many Christians who care about and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, that it is not just about presents and candy to us, and that some of the objects we use in celebrating it are also symbolic, as are those used to celebrate Hanukkah. If someone wishes me a happy Hanukkah, it does not offend me or make me have an identity crisis; if I thought you felt the same way, I would wish you a merry Christmas.

Editorial Review:

Latkes are potato pancakes served at Hanukkah, and Lemony Snicket is an alleged children’s author. For the first time in literary history, these two elements are combined in one book. A particularly irate latke is the star of The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming, but many other holiday icons appear and even speak: flashing colored lights, cane-shaped candy, a pine tree. Santa Claus is briefly discussed as well. The ending is happy, at least for some. People who are interested in any or all of these things will find this book so enjoyable it will feel as though Hanukkah were being celebrated for several years, rather than eight nights.

Editorial Review:

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the publication of L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz, master paper engineer Robert Sabuda has created a pop-up version of Dorothy's adventures in Oz that fans will find hard to resist. Modeling his depictions of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the rest after W. W. Denslow's original art, Sabuda adds a third dimension that would have rocked Denslow's--and Baum's--world. A rapidly spinning cyclone actually casts a breeze over the startled reader's face. Glorious red poppies wave seductively in a field. And the Emerald City positively glitters with green, especially when young readers try on the special tinted "Spectacles for You" provided in a pocket on the page. The abridged text, provided in minibooklets set onto each page, covers enough basics for the Oz novice, but we recommend a read-aloud of the original, as well, for all the glory and detail of Baum's fantastic tale. Sabuda's homage to the classic is truly spectacular; even purists will gasp in delight at the sight of the humbug wizard floating away in his shiny green, gold, and blue hot-air balloon. This great introduction to the story of Oz doubles as a fun collector's item. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

My son read this book at the barber shop and loved it so much we ordered it for him. It is a great way to teach word recognition and promotes fast reading so they practice, then they enjoy challenging the whole family to read the book. As a homeschool mom I appreciate any book that encourages my boy to read! Love that Dr. Seuss

Tongue Twister Heaven 5 out of 5 stars.

The note in the front of the book sums it up: Be careful, this book is dangerous. If you are looking for a lot of unusual and wacky tongue twisters which are truly hard, you need this book. It's fun reading with young children and also a fun challenge for Intermediate to Advanced learners of English as a second language. The artwork is classic Suess, too.

Editorial Review:

A collection of tongue twisters that is an amusing exercise for beginning readers.

clever and a nice addition to Christmas tales 4 out of 5 stars.

I used to teach 5th grade and first read this to my class when it came out as a newspaper feature. I purchased 4 copies this season to share with young family members.

Book is Blessing for A Bad Day 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a book about miracles and perspective. 'You don't always get what you want, but you get what you need,' a wise songwriter once wrote. This book is the perfect gift for anyone who feels that things NEVER turn out right for them. Like me. I bought this book for myself because I love Lemony Snicket. I've already read it several times and I laugh in exactly the same spots every time. I had a horrible day today -- NOTHING went right -- and I came home and read this book. Perspective changed. Mood improved. Try it. You'll love it.

Fun for parents and kids 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book - it's very clever and very funny, yet still heartwarming with a very positive message. I thought the Lemony Snicket books were dark, and while this has a little darkness in it, it's much more optimistic then I expected. This isn't for very young children (it's bit verbose for my 3 year old), but it's now my 5 year old's favorite. Good plot twists and great language for a kids book.

Editorial Review:

This is a story about a lump of coal who can think, talk, and move itself around.

Is there a more charming holiday tale to behold? Probably, but Lemony Snicket has not written one.
