The Lemony Snicket Who Wouldn't Stop Screaming 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 44 people found this review helpful.

This is the worst children's book I have read for a long time, and that's saying something, considering the junk that is on a market which I try to keep myself informed upon. Tell me something, Mr. Snicket: would you tolerate a book containing the level of prejudice yours contains, if its sentiments were antisemitic rather than antichristian? I am a Christian, but I stand up for the Jews when I hear antisemitic comments. You are obviously not interested in combating prejudice, but in promoting your own ideology at the expense of others. Why don't you find something more important to scream about than people confusing two holidays together, something like the plight of your people in Israel at this moment? I don't know why you should even care about the "real" meaning of Hanukkah since you are an atheist to begin with. And you seem to forget that there are many Christians who care about and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, that it is not just about presents and candy to us, and that some of the objects we use in celebrating it are also symbolic, as are those used to celebrate Hanukkah. If someone wishes me a happy Hanukkah, it does not offend me or make me have an identity crisis; if I thought you felt the same way, I would wish you a merry Christmas.

Editorial Review:

Latkes are potato pancakes served at Hanukkah, and Lemony Snicket is an alleged children’s author. For the first time in literary history, these two elements are combined in one book. A particularly irate latke is the star of The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming, but many other holiday icons appear and even speak: flashing colored lights, cane-shaped candy, a pine tree. Santa Claus is briefly discussed as well. The ending is happy, at least for some. People who are interested in any or all of these things will find this book so enjoyable it will feel as though Hanukkah were being celebrated for several years, rather than eight nights.

Great for very young children 4 out of 5 stars.

My 12 month old's favorite book is "The Foot Book" by Dr. Seuss. So I bought her several other Dr. Seuss books for her birthday. She really likes this book. The other Dr. Seuss books that I purchased are a little long and wordy for her for right now, but "Hop on Pop" is perfect for this stage-and it's nice that it comes in board book form.

Classic early reader 4 out of 5 stars.

Let's note first that this book isn't actually intended as a readaloud book, nor is it intended for children much younger than the age of six.

The format of the book reflects this. It's a bit long for toddlers (who aren't known for having great attention spans), and the different spreads are disconnected - when a kid is at the age where they struggle to read "All, Ball, We All Play Ball", the last thing they need to worry about is what they read two pages before!

Can it be used as a readaloud? No doubt! But don't be disappointed if it doesn't work for you and your kid that way.

That said, this is a wonderful early reader. Simple rhyming text, with the main words in large print at the top of the page; and really funny illustrations.

I really suggest this one.

Editorial Review:

A condensed, board book version of the classic bestseller, perfect for babies and toddlers. Introduces the youngest readers to the wonderful world of Seussian word play.

My son read this book at the barber shop and loved it so much we ordered it for him. It is a great way to teach word recognition and promotes fast reading so they practice, then they enjoy challenging the whole family to read the book. As a homeschool mom I appreciate any book that encourages my boy to read! Love that Dr. Seuss

A book designed to twist your tongue into contortions, kids love the wackiness and also seem to enjoy seeing the grown ups mess up. Not for lightweight adult readers.

Tongue Twister Heaven 5 out of 5 stars.

The note in the front of the book sums it up: Be careful, this book is dangerous. If you are looking for a lot of unusual and wacky tongue twisters which are truly hard, you need this book. It's fun reading with young children and also a fun challenge for Intermediate to Advanced learners of English as a second language. The artwork is classic Suess, too.

The Chronicles of Narnia Pop-up: Based on the Books by C. S. Lewis
This is the best, most intricate pop-up book I have ever seen. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves pop-up books or Narnia.

Excellent pop-up book!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Robert Sabuda is incredible. The book came exactly as described, brand new, all that good stuff. Got here in the time allotted.
As for the book itself...it's awesome. So far, I've gotten this, Alice in Wonderland, and Wizard of Oz. They're great for kids and adults and just so well done. Highly recommended!

Editorial Review:

C. S. Lewis's classic Narnia books spring to life in the hands of award-winning paper engineer Robert Sabuda. Each of the seven books in the series has its own pop-up spread rendered in spectacular detail with stunning special effects. Experience a different adventure from Narnia on every spread in this beautiful addition to the Narnia library—sure to enchant fans of both C. S. Lewis and Robert Sabuda.

Wonderful Wizard is Wonderful 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book as a birthday present for my Dorothy-obsessed 3-year old and she LOVES it. I was a little worried that it would be seriously abridged when I read that it only had 16 pages, but no need to fear. Within each page is a chapter of the book so there is plenty of story. It takes almost an hour to read it to her but it is well-worth it.

Sabuda Does It Again 5 out of 5 stars.

Robert Sabuda is a master of the pop-up book and this is the second one I purchased of an adaptation of a famous children's story, and once again it does not dissapoint.

A good telling of the story combined with some incredible pop-ups, the one of the Emerald City makes you feel like you are in the story.

If you are a collector or have children you must get at least one of these books. Make sure you read it with the younger ones to show how books should be handled properly, though make sure they really understand before letting them use the book on their own.

Editorial Review:

Robert Sabuda has created a resplendent pop-up version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original publication. This glorious edition is told in a shorter version of L. Frank Baum's original text, with artwork in the style of W. W. Denslow. With sparkling touches of colored foil and Emerald City eyeglasses, this classic tale is certain to find an honored place on the family bookshelf.

Book is Blessing for A Bad Day 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a book about miracles and perspective. 'You don't always get what you want, but you get what you need,' a wise songwriter once wrote. This book is the perfect gift for anyone who feels that things NEVER turn out right for them. Like me. I bought this book for myself because I love Lemony Snicket. I've already read it several times and I laugh in exactly the same spots every time. I had a horrible day today -- NOTHING went right -- and I came home and read this book. Perspective changed. Mood improved. Try it. You'll love it.

Fun for parents and kids 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book - it's very clever and very funny, yet still heartwarming with a very positive message. I thought the Lemony Snicket books were dark, and while this has a little darkness in it, it's much more optimistic then I expected. This isn't for very young children (it's bit verbose for my 3 year old), but it's now my 5 year old's favorite. Good plot twists and great language for a kids book.

Editorial Review:

This is a story about a lump of coal who can think, talk, and move itself around.

Is there a more charming holiday tale to behold? Probably, but Lemony Snicket has not written one.

A Fresh and Funny Perspective 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"Everybody knows the story of the Three Little Pigs. Or at least they think they do. But I'll let you in on a little secret. Nobody knows the real story, because nobody has ever heard my side of the story."

This is what Alexander T. Wolf (but you can call him "Al") tells to pseudo-biographer Jon Scieszka at the start of this tale of the "real story" behind what happened between Al and that irksome triad of swine, the Three Little Pigs. Al claims that how it all got started was with "a sneeze and a cup of sugar" and things just got blown (literally) out of proportion from there.

You see, one day Al had a nasty cold that had him sneezing himself into oblivion. He was also baking a cake for his dear old granny for her birthday, ran out of sugar, so decided to go to his neighbors for help (what, there's not a corner store in Al's neck of the woods?). Those neighbors happen to be pigs and poor craftsmen at that - Al manages to knock down two of the pigs' houses (one of straw, one of sticks) with those gigantic sneezes of his. He then eats the deceased so they "don't spoil" and then moves on to the last house (made of brick) to plead for that cup of sugar he so desperately needs. The pig in the brick house denies him passage AND sugar, inciting Al's anger with a nasty little comment about his grandmother. This has Al seething and when the authorities roll up, he is sneezing uncontrollably and with great force whilst trying to break down the door. The media frenzy this creates gives Al the "Big Bad" moniker he has had to this day, a misnomer this entire story has sought to discredit.

But how are you gonna trust a wolf behind bars?

Scieszka's amusing take on the hapless villain of this oldest-of-old fairytales is just as amusing for the adult as it is for the young reader. Lane Smith's illustrations are spectacular, designing Al as the everyman (or should I say "everywolf") with a demure sweatervest, bowtie and studious-looking spectacles. What little we see of the pigs (other than their shiny rear ends paired with fork and knife) isn't nice - they are literally painted as antagonists, for we aren't meant to sympathize with them in this story.

Bottom line: This is a great children's book to own (I read it myself when I was a child and loved it), especially if you and/or your child are familiar with the original story. It will provide a fresh and funny perspective time and time again.

Editorial Review:

is presented from the humorous perspective of a beleaguered wolf, whose innocent requests to borrow cups of sugar are rendered cataclysmic by a snoutful of unfortunate sneezes. Reprint. NYT. AB. NYT.

Wonderful collection of stories 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this after seeing it on Amazon. It was one of my favorite books growing up and I wanted to share it with my three daughters (8,6,& 2). After reading "The Sneetches" to my 6 year-old, she looked at me and said that it wasn't very nice to treat people badly because they aren't the same as us. I was thrilled that she got the meaning of that story right away. Dr. Seuss is a genius for getting these moral points across in a way that children understand and making it so fun at the same time. She thought that "The Zax" was funny. She didn't understand why they just didn't compromise. Every story in this book has an important lesson and it's such a great way to spend time with your children too!

LESSONS LEARNED FOR LIFE 5 out of 5 stars.

Seuss teaches so much to my daughter that I would have a hard time starting a conversation about. My daughter doesn't quite get the stories so she asks me and we have great conversations about right and wrong.

Last night while I lay thinking here
Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
And pranced and partied all night long
And sang their same old Whatif song:

Whatif I flunk that test?
Whatif green hair grows on my chest?
Whatif nobody likes me?
Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me?...

Here in the attic of Shel Silverstein you will find Backward Bill, Sour Face Ann, the Meehoo with an Exactlywatt, and the Polar Bear in the Frigidaire. You will talk with Broiled Face, and find out what happens when Somebody steals your knees, you get caught by the Quick-Digesting Gink, a Mountain snores, and They Put a Brassiere on the Camel.

From the creator of the beloved poetry collections Where the Sidewalk Ends and Falling Up, here is another wondrous book of poems and drawings.
