Timeless mix of tall-tale and heart 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've been passionately in love with this book since the 4th grade. I think it is one of the best children's books ever written, in the many themes it explores.

Heck, you have to give the author credit for writing such an ordinary story in a style usually reserved for legends. For that's what this becomes, an urban legend, a tall tale, of a boy who is simply an ordinary boy. It's real and touching even as it goes over the line to the roll-your-eyes fantastic.

Even as Maniac Magee impresses the locals with his small-time wonders, he is a very real boy with very real emotions. No character in this book is made flat, and everyone is shown in multiple lights.

And yet it still manages to have simple, poignant riding that is easily understood, even if the themes are a little more complex.

One of the greatest books Spinelli has written or will ever write.

Editorial Review:

After his parents die, Jeffrey Lionel Magee's life becomes legendary as he accomplishes athletic feats and other extraordinary exploits that awe his contemporaries. Paperback.

Editorial Review:

10th Anniversary Edition Louis Sachar received great recognition for his groundbreaking story of Stanley Yelnats – a boy with a history of bad luck. As School Library Journal predicted in their starred review of the book when it was first published, “Kids will love Holes.” A decade later, the book is still quenching young readers’ thirst for a gripping story about a far-reaching family curse, friendship, adventure, endurance, and, finally, a generous helping of good karma.  Celebrate with this special 10th Anniversary Edition, which includes portraits of the author as a little brother (by his big brother), as a husband (by his wife), and as a father (by his daughter), along with photos and Louis Sachar’s 1999 Newbery acceptance speech. Vladimir Radunsky, who created the original iconoclastic cover illustration, has made new art from the familiar images. Wrapped in an acetate jacket, this edition is an appealing package that will be equally welcome in public, school, or home libraries.

Best Kids Books 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I can't forget this book, because of it had several great factors. It covered almost every place a kid may see, with it's name to know what the object is. Each page shows kids different work spaces, lands, city life, even inside a home, room by room.
This would be an excellent book for preschoolers, and even younger as well. Children and their parents may create their own stories with the detailed scenes.

It really IS the BEST word book ever! 5 out of 5 stars.

I LOVE this book! I had it when I was a child. My favorite word in it is on the kitchen page "Batter Spoon"!!!

Great book if you don't mind having to read it all the time! 5 out of 5 stars.

My 17month daughter loves this book! I was into Richard Scarry books growing up and really wanted my baby to like it. Initially I was afraid the illustrations would be too busy for her, but that is clearly not the case. This book is one of three books (the others are big book of animals and book of words) she brings to me just about every thirty minutes, which is driving me a little crazy but I'll just have to deal with it. She really gets into the scenes especially scenes of the circus, zoo, farm, grocery, home, beach, ships, trains, etc. and has built up quite the vocabulary. She's saying the names of the animals and their sounds, bodyparts, the landscape such as tree, sun, moon, cloud, flower and can point to most anything in the pages. The scenes of the airport, trucks and "when you grow up" aren't engaging her yet but I'm sure later when she gets it more.

Richard Scarry books are a beloved classic, they are and will be on the bookshelf in our home (until the grandkids). ;)

Editorial Review:

Kenny and Kathy Bear and their Busytown friends introduce new and familiar names for objects grouped by subject, theme, and setting, in the city and on the farm, at the dentist and at the grocer's, in the kitchen and at the circus and all the places they frequent.

Editorial Review:

Tucker is a streetwise city mouse. He thought he’d seen it all. But he’s never met a cricket before, which really isn’t surprising, because, along with his friend Harry Cat, Tucker lives in the very heart of New York City—the Times Square subway station. Chester Cricket never intended to leave his Connecticut meadow. He’d be there still if he hadn’t followed the entrancing aroma of liverwurst right into someone’s picnic basket. Now, like any tourist in the city, he wants to look around. And he could not have found two better guides—and friends—than Tucker and Harry. The trio have many adventures—from taking in the sights and sounds of Broadway to escaping a smoky fire.
Chester makes a third friend, too. It is a boy, Mario, who rescues Chester from a dusty corner of the subway station and brings him to live in the safety of his parents’ newsstand. He hopes at first to keep Chester as a pet, but Mario soon understands that the cricket is more than that. Because Chester has a hidden talent and no one—not even Chester himself—realizes that the little country cricket may just be able to teach even the toughest New Yorkers a thing or two.

Beautiful book, but.... 4 out of 5 stars.

The song is inaccurate. I bought this because this is my favorite Christmas song and was wowed by the art work, yet disappointed that the song was botched! Twelve drummers drumming, Eleven Pipers Piping, Ten Lords a Leaping, and Nine Ladies Dancing were all mixed up in this edition. Very disappointing.

A Wonderful Family Reading Experience! 5 out of 5 stars.

I've wanted this book for years, but thought my children were too young to take care of it. I got it this year for my 4 & 8 yr. old. Reading this book together will be a part of our goodnight routine now through Christmas. They love the pop ups! And the anniversary edition's last page includes a battery-lit Christmas tree pop up. My little boy (who's scared of the dark) waits by the light switch so he can turn out all the lights and shut the door to see the tree light up. This is a beautiful book!

Editorial Review:

A true holiday classic literally comes to life in this stunning pop-up edition of a seasonal favorite. With a partridge popping, snow scattering, and lords a-leaping off the page, this lavish book is a gift for readers of all ages. For this special anniversary edition legendary paper engineer Robert Sabuda encloses his own gifts to the reader: extra pages with a pop-up Christmas tree with real lights aglow, and a beautiful pop-up ornament of two turtledoves. The ornament is packaged with the book and is perfect for adding a celebratory touch to your tree. This beautiful anniversary package is one to treasure!

My children loved Richard Scarry and it's fun to now introduce the grandchildren to the same books and games. They like them just as much as my own did. I'm so glad this one was available. Great condition.

Editorial Review:

Welcome to Busytown where everyone is on their way to work. The Busytown grocers stock and sell fresh food; the bankers keep the money safe; the doctors and nurses make sure everyone is healthy; the postal workers collect and deliver letters; the sanitation workers collect trash and recyclables; the lumber workers chop trees to make furniture and houses; and the workers at the docks, railroads and airports help transport people and freight. But it takes even more careers and professions than that to keep this busy town running.

Baby Bird and Mother 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a children's book and it is absolutely the sweetest book I've ever read. It is about a baby bird hatching and then finding its mother in this big world. The mother feeds the baby (brings it a worm).

When I read this book to my children, we compare the bird to them (the child) and compare the worm to the mother's milk. When our children are first born, they immediately find their mother and immediately get fed.

I just cannot sing enough praise for this book. I like giving this book as a gift at baby showers. If you have a small child, I would definitely recommend it.

Awesome!

traumatic and horrifying 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

While i can understand the usefulness of this book for parents of adopted children, when i was little i thought it was just AWFUL!

I always hated that book, and it made me terrified of getting lost and not being able to find my mother (not that i was ever in any danger of being out of her sight for 1 minute...). I remember thinking that the story was cruel and calloused, and i felt so sorry for the poor baby birdie.

To this day (25 yrs later), my mother, sister and I, still joke about being traumatised by "are you my mother?", and refer to it as "that awful book".

If your kids like it, that's fine, but i will never buy this book for my kids.

Editorial Review:

Never having seen his mother, a newly hatched baby bird, separated from his family, makes many humorous mistakes in trying to find her, in a bilingual English-Spanish easy reader.

Great book for remembering how lucky we all are!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I love this Dr. Seuss book. It is too easy these days to focus on the negative things in life. I bought this book for my 10 year old son and 12 year old daughter to remind them, in a humorous way, that even though everything in life may not be exactly the way they want it to be, they still have a pretty terrific life.

A lesser known Dr. Seuss book for good reason 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you receive this book as a gift see if you can trade it in for a better Seuss book. Don't add it to your bedtime reading rotation if you've already stocked some of the more popular Dr. Seuss titles, such as:

The Cat in the Hat
Green Eggs and Ham
Horton Hears a Who

This book is mind-numbingly repetitive and not in a lyrical, pleasing way like Hop on Pop or Fox in Socks. Add the fact that this concept is much harder to grasp than what you'll find in most Dr. Seuss books. Job satisfaction isn't a problem for young sons.

Overall, these issues don't make this book as horrible as a movie tie-in but I can't recommend this book when it fails to measure up to Dr. Seuss classics.

Editorial Review:

Illus. in full color. Children will be cheered just contemplating the outrageous array of troubles they're lucky they don't have.

We love Richard Scarry and bought this book for Christmas. i was always so disappointed that it was only 6 pages long -. I just realized today (1 day past the return date) that it is supposed to be 24 pages long and we have a defective book. ***IF YOU ORDER THIS FROM AMAZON BEWARE THAT IT MAY ALSO BE A DEFECTIVE AND SHORT BOOK!!****

Lots to look for, lots of fun. 5 out of 5 stars.

My son (2 years old) loves this book. It's great for teaching new words and getting him to search the drawings for new things. The pages are chaotic, but that's part of the fun. It's a very silly story, and it makes for wonderful reading time. We look forward to adding more books like this to our collection.
It is a paperback, so you might want to check how gently your kid might or might not treat the book.

Editorial Review:

Drippy and Sticky the house painters have come to paint the Busytown Fire Station. But with Smokey and the other brave firefighters rushing in and out to rescue people, there are quite a few wet paint mishaps! Filled with information about firefighters and Scarry’s sense of fun, this book is sure to delight young readers everywhere.
