For average travelers, this guide is a bust! 2 out of 5 stars.
17 of 26 people found this review helpful.

Unless you aspire to travel like a "Survivor" fan, this book is not for you. It dwells on the most bizarre of activities and destinations that only a fraction of the population could find inviting or affordable. Enjoy the taste of grubs or insects? - This is for you. Got unlimited travel funds, come aboard.
If you expect a book that narrows the world's most fulfilling and affordable destinations down to a practical choice, look elsewhere. This book was a major disappointment with only a few helpful pages.

For the travel enthusiast 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this series from Lonely Planet. It's beautiful and cleverly written. The bluelist isn't designed to give you a travel itinerary or help you get around but presents interesting and iconic experiences weighted by current travel trends. For me, the bluelist is all about daydreaming about the next travel adventure.

Editorial Review:

Bigger and better than before! The new Lonely Planet BLUELIST 2007 is here and it captures the best in travel - a collection of trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the year ahead.

Drawing on the knowledge, passion and miles traveled by the Lonely Planet community of authors, staff and travelers, and covering every country in the world, this year's edition is a selection of the best places to go and things to do all around the world right now.

Enough Already 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've had it with the Rick Steves Groupie crowd. We just came back from a month long trip in Europe and the only people anyone with the Rick Steves guides are meeting are other Americans with the same guidebooks. They all eat in the same restaurants and they all go to the same places. Europe Through the Back Door? Not hardly. It's Europe through the SAME door. Read a guidebook before you go somewhere, but leave it home. Have a small pocket map of some sort along with you and then ASK questions from locals when you get there. The whole idea of travel is to meet new people, enjoy a different culture and have some fun. The purpose is NOT to check things off a "to see" list.

Editorial Review:

Rick Steves doesn't just list where to travel in Europe, he leads travelers through the "Back Door," and reveals how to give every journey an extra, more authentic dimension. He shows travelers how to delve into European culture, make friends with the locals, and experience each region's natural wonders -- economically and hassle free. Rick Steves' London 2003 includes the British Museum, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's, and the Tower of London. You'll find the best sights and activities, friendly places to eat and sleep -- heavy on character, light on the budget, suggested day plans and itineraries mixing famous sights with little-known discoveries, shopping and entertainment secrets, and special tips for exploring with kids. "It's Rick Steves again, that one-man Euro-dynamo." -- Chicago Tribune

We LOVED this guidebook. the only disadvantage is that it's a bit heavy. but the coated pages and the fast-read pages made it fa 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

this is a great simple guidebook for a short trip to paris. it's very easy to absorb, but there are deeper sections if you want to know more. perhaps we had the latest edition but we did get a quick overview of the trendiest spots in paris - perfect if you're travelling with a pack of teenage girls...

the only problem is that it's a bit heavy. i'd have carried even more often if it were lighter.

Nicely Arranged Guide 5 out of 5 stars.

Purchased the guide as a replacement for a borrowed guide that got wet while we were in Paris. This one came with a wear/water resistant cover and was very nicely arranged for quickly finding the locations and areas of interest.

Editorial Review:

The Eyewitness Travel Guide helps you to get the most out of your trip with minimum difficulties. The opening section Introducing Paris locates the city geographically, sets modern Parisian its historical context and explains how Parisian life changes through the years. Paris At a Glance is an overview of the city's specialties. The main sightseeing section of the book is Paris Area by Area. It describes all the main sights with maps, photographs and detailed illustrations. Get to know Paris with The Eyewitness Travel Guide.

Italy (Eyewitness Travel Guides)- a clear and concise travel guide 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My family and I visited Italy for two weeks, and this travel guide was priceless. I borrowed it from a friend (his 1998 version) and had to purchase a more recent version from Amazon as soon as I got back.
DK Publishing has reasonables prices, and the delivery time is fast. Very fast. The book arrived in brand new condition, and I noticed that our hotel in Rome 'The Lancelot' is now listed in the directory of places to stay in Rome. There is so much information in this travel guide. Each tourist sight description is short and sweet and to the point. No pages and pages of details that might otherwise put you to sleep, as other tour books can do. And the pictures are just as wonderful. Looking at them again now that we've been back, is even more fun. They do a great job, and this seller is very good. I'll buy from them again. Ciao!

Best travel guide 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The DK books are always great, if a bit heavy because the pictures are so good. Another benefit, if you don't get there the guide makes you feel like you have been there anyway.

nice pics 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a nice reference guide when walking around town -- there are good pics and maps and it's a pretty light book. However it does not provide many recommendations on where to stay/eat so it's not too helpful in the planning stage except to get you excited about what you are going to see. Probably could've gone without it, but giving it 3-stars for being pretty... :)

Primer for a trip to N.Z. 4 out of 5 stars.

It's a nice and thick travel review of all the places most people would want to visit, when going to New Zealand for the first time. The smallish pictures are good for giving you an overview of the history and sites, and all of the major cities are covered.

Not bad, could be better 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Basically, my main complaint is that they took out the good stuff from the old edition and replace them with irrelevant stuff.

One example would be in the last edition, they had a section with color pictures of different types of food served in Thailand, something I find interesting to note when traveling to a foreign country. They replaced this section with a section with picture of people riding on elephants and scenery that don't really tell you much.

The reason why I did not give them too bad of a rating is that the information is pretty much the same between the two editions. In this edition, there is less information on border crossings, but that is due to increase safety concerns (so I can understand why they did that). I would still recommend the last edition. Besides being cheaper, you actually learn a little bit more.

Nice guidebook 5 out of 5 stars.

We enjoyed this guidebook on our recent trip to Florence. It was comprehensive, easy to use, and fun to read. This publisher also offers a companion map and mini-guide book to use on the go.

Good Info for a Trip 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this prior to traveling to Italy. Great info on Tuscany and Florence. And I loved that area!!

Only wish I'd had more time 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Yeah, doesn't everyone? There is so much in this book outside of Florence and I really wanted to make the trek into the Tuscan hills around the city, especially to Pisa and Siena. But alas, I was trapped in Florence...and what a prison it was! Everyone should find themselves thus abused at some point in their life, I believe.

This DK guide made the punishment a lot easier to endure, saving me time and headache by thoroughly breaking down specific areas of the city in detailed maps. From Palazzo and Ponte Vecchio, to the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (il Duomo), and on to Brancacci Chapel and Santa Croce and everything in between. This guide gave me detailed information on each of the sites and helped enrich the experience. The exploded diagrams cover the finer points, giving the reader recognizable visual elements to look for along the way. This is so much better than words alone.

Overall, I highly recommend this book...and the city itself. Florence is a place like no other!

Editorial Review:

There is something for just about everyone in Florence and Tuscany. From viewing some of the world's greatest Renaissance art to wandering around designer boutiques. Discover a whole new side of Florence and Tuscany with the Eyewitness Travel Guide. This guide will give you practical information without any hassle. All of the important towns and other places to visit are described individually. Within each town or city, there is detailed information on important buildings and other sites. Make the most of your trip with the Eyewitness Travel Guide.
