Hard to use 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I would not recommend this phrase book because I found it very hard to access the phrases. It is organized by situations where you would use the phrases, such as counting, traveling, eating, and sleeping. It requires too much skimming and scanning to find what you want to say.

Helpful and compact 5 out of 5 stars.

I speak enough French to survive in France without assistance if I had to, but why do that when I have this handy little guidebook? Seriously, this book brought back to memory much of the vocabulary I learned in high school and college. I didn't really need to use it much, but it was a great refresher. If I didn't speak any French, it would have been a lifesaver. My husband actually referred to the book quite a bit because he doesn't speak French.

Editorial Review:

Useful and fun to read, this French phrasebook is the ideal way for travelers to communicate easily and naturally. The typical French dictionary won't show you how to tell the hotel manager "J'ai dormi comme un enfant" ("I slept like a baby") and certainly not "Je suis couvert de piqures des punaises!" ("I'm covered with bug bites!"). This one does!

Lonely Planet Italy 4 out of 5 stars.

Decent range of information, though some more specificity would be nice-especially in Venice. They had very little on accommodations or dining there.

Fine, but there are better 3 out of 5 stars.
18 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Used this book for a three month trip through Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. A friend who travelled with me had Footprint's guide to South America. While Lonely Planet had far and away the better maps, everything else about the Footprint book was better -- more information, more current information, and most importantly, broader coverage! There were many small towns that were not even included in the LP book. Even in the major cities, Footprint covered more sights and did so with more detail. If you are picking up a second book for a trip, by all means get the LP. But if you are only buying one, go with Footprint until LP seriously expands this edition.

Editorial Review:

Challenging? Check. Rewarding? Beyond your wildest dreams. South America is made for travel-the gripping, spine-tingling, adrenaline-charged type of travel you live for. Fine guide, but biased 3 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

As someone who has lived in Israel for almost a year, I know that every tiny thing is politicized here. So I don't really hold it against this guide that it has an obvious anti-Zionist slant. It's hesitant to mention the word Israel (note the title), but sometimes it does. It does not acknowledge that Jerusalem is in Israel, but you'd only notice that if you're paying attention. Any section that discusses the modern history of Israel is severely biased. The tone is appropriate, but the facts are presented in such a one-sided manner that relying just on this book would give you a seriously skewed perspective. There aren't many up-to-date guides to Israel, and this one is pretty good (I also like the Frommer's). So go ahead and buy this guide, but read about Israel from a couple of other sources to offset the bias. The Idiot's Guide to Middle East Conflict is an easy to digest overview, though it's biased in the other direction -- sadly, I don't think objectivity on this subject is achievable.

Purely as a tour guide, this doesn't quite stand alone; it's a great supplement if you have another guide. Hotel and restaurant listings are very brief, and they aren't included on the maps.

The book has great maps and nice pictures, but doesn't help with making decisions for what to do on limited time. It also doesn't provide tips on avoiding lines or what days are best to go like other books

It's a great book if you've never been there before to find out what you want to do. Everything is categorized in the back, and great pictures! It's definitely a good thing to purchase before you go and study on the long plane ride.

Good but only for certain States 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This manual is an informative manual as long as you don't live in Florida. As a Boy Scout I camped all over the state of Florida and now as a parent of a daughter I must find camping spots that are public such as State or National Parks, I purchase this book in hopes of finding the best places to go in my state. Unfortunately the information for Florida is severly lacking. The cool feature of telling you exactly which site in the campground is the best site... missing. Now if you live in other states they do seem to tell you where is the best site so the best advice I can give is get this book from the library look at a few sites in yoru state and if the details are there, buy it or if you happen to have lots of money and or time to travel get it anyway.

Editorial Review:

  • Covers campgrounds in every state except Hawaii
  • One out of every ten vehicle-owning households in the U.S. owns an RV, and 150 million Americans enjoy camping
  • Reviews nearly 5,000 campgrounds that accommodate RVers and families traveling by car
  • Includes "Campground Awards" for privacy, cleanliness, security, facilities, and best setting

A Good Supplemental Reference 3 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

The DK Eyewitness Travel book for Australia is a decent travel guide, which includes a lot of pictures to help the traveler see what the attraction is while doing their planning. This 2006 revised edition runs over 600 pages, and includes an introductory section as well as 8 sections on the various areas of Australia, including one for Sydney by itself. It also has a section for Travelers' needs, which include accommodations, restaurants, and shopping information, and a section titled "Survival Guide" which contains a lot of useful information for travelers.

While the pictures are quite striking, they do seem to come at a price of more information about each of the attractions as well as the general areas. For my trip, I found the section on Tasmania to be rather sparse. The section on Melbourne was significantly better, but even there it would have been nice to have more information. I also question the practice of grouping all the hotels and restaurants together in a single section for the entire country. It seems as if the traveler would be better served if information of that sort was included in each of the sections rather than all together. They do organize the items by region within those sections, but in a hurry one might not notice if they stray outside of their area.

This is a useful reference, but I think it works best as a supplemental reference along with other material. If one needs a single reference, you should look elsewhere.

Editorial Review:

Recognized the world over by frequent flyers and armchair travelers alike, Eyewitness Travel Guides are the most colorful and comprehensive guides on the market. With beautifully commissioned photographs and spectacular 3-D aerial views revealing the charm of each destination, these amazing travel guides show what others only tell.

Spain, Eyewitness 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

great product...but a bit heavy to tote around Spain! Read it before you go.

Its General Information 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Very Practical, though its bits of information..if you are planning in to visit a particular city, you should buy the book of that particular city. This book its like a run-through of Spain. But it has the most important guides and tips (Survival Guide). A really good value. It has really great pictures and drawings, great maps, a phrase book with translations and how to pronounce it. It has the maps of the metros in Barcelona and Madrid. It has a street finder, which is also very practical. Its a great book for "on your own trips", for it has the opening hours and its schedules.

Editorial Review:

The Eyewitness Travel Guide to Spain provides detailed, practical information and expert recommendations. It has information about Spain's country, historical, and cultural sides and includes features about food, wine, beaches and festivals. Check the Traveler's Needs section for restaurant and hotel recommendations and the Survival Guide has tips on everything from transport to using the telephone system. The Eyewitness Travel Guide to Spainhelps you to get the most out of your visit
