Kids will love this non frightening Halloween book. 5 out of 5 stars.

My mother read this book to me as a child. It was out of print for a while, but this new printing is excellent. The illustrations (same as orginal version) are superb and the text is quaint but clever enough to keep the attention of small kids or new readers. Highly recommended for Halloween or year round.

Another JEWEL.... 5 out of 5 stars.

Through the years I have purchased many Tasha Tudor books for family and friends; all have deserved a FIVE STAR rating as far as I am concerned. Her delightful illustrations have been outstanding and reflect the story content almost "word-for-word".
She is a MUST on our book shelf!

Delightful for Halloween 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a primary book set in pre-1900s Connecticut. The lovely little story could prompt discussion about holiday traditions and life on the farm in the US. The illustrations provide an amusing and exciting crescendo. The teacher may want to use this book around Halloween as a seasonal story about scaring people, which is not a scary book at all. The book could prompt talk about what life in the US was like during earlier periods: When did this story take place? How can you tell? How was Halloween different then?

Editorial Review:

It's almost Halloween and little Sylvie Ann has found the biggest, fattest pumpkin. But before she can carve it into a giant, crooked-toothed pumpkin moonshine (or jack-o'Iantern), she has to get it home.

Beautiful edition of a classic 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

A Child's Garden of Verses has always been one of my favorite books, and over the years I've given dozens of copies of it as First Birthday presents to the new children in my life. This is the most beautiful edition I have ever seen of these beloved poems. The illustrations are wonderful! They're taken from numerous editions over the years, and they cover a variety of styles and time periods. I couldn't be happier with this book, and I can't wait for the opportunity to give it to more children who I hope will grow to love it as much as I do.

The world is so full of a number of things
I'm sure we should all be as happy as kings.

Who says you can't go back.... 5 out of 5 stars.

Just love the works of Robert Louis Stevenson. Loved them
as a child and still do. And the illustrations are
wonderful - reminds me of when I was a little girl, and
we sometimes need that.

A wonderful romp 5 out of 5 stars.

Aesop's Fables 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Aesop's Fables is a great book that is a collection of short stories. This book gave us famous phrases that are used today, such as "sour grapes." These are easy to understand stories for all ages(unless you are under the age of 7). It's amazing that such small stories have great meaning. Every fable gives some kind of small lesson at the end. The characters fit each story very well. This book is a must read for people who wonder where some of our everyday phrases come from and who want to learn a lesson from just a few sentences.

perfect for the young 5 out of 5 stars.

It's the perfect introduction for little ones to Aesop's Fables. The fables are quite short with amazing illustrations by Lisbeth Zwerger.

Editorial Review:

"The Country Mouse and the City Mouse," "The Fox and the Grapes," "The Hare and the Tortoise"--these and other well-loved fables are ilustrated with intricately detailed paintings that provide a perfect counterpoint. "(A) magnificent volume . . . illustrated with elegant paintings in opulent colors."--Publishers Weekly. Full color.

My daughter and I love this book. She is learning her alphabet and understanding the sounds that go with the letters! Each letter of the alphabet has a clever story involving PL Travers delightful characters. It is verbose if your child doesn't love to listen to stories and be challenged by vocabulary, this is not for you. But if yours is like mine...you will both enjoy it!

Editorial Review:

P. L. Travers introduced Mary Poppins to the world in 1934. Ever since, the no-nonsense English nanny has been beloved by children and adults everywhere.

Originally published in 1962 and long unavailable, Mary Poppins from A to Z offers a unique glimpse of the famous Poppins cast. Twenty-six vignettes--one for each letter of the alphabet--weave unexpected tales of Mary Poppins, the Banks children, and other characters from Travers's timeless novels. As an added twist, each vignette is filled with fun and unusual words that start with the featured letter.

In full color for the first time, this enchanting new edition will delight both old and new fans of the inimitable Mary Poppins.

Amelia Bedelia is Job Hunting, Look Out! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

When Amelia Bedelia, the housekeeper who literally takes everything literally, brings Mrs. Rogers her cereal with coffee, the woman takes one look at those flakes floating around in her coffee cup and fires Amelia before she gets a chance to fill her creme puffs. Amelia, one who always sees the bright side of life, sets out to find a job. First she goes to work in a beauty shop, but when she's told to pin up a customer's hair and does it with pins from her purse, she is fired. Then she finds work in a dress shop as a seamstress, but she shortens all the dresses with a scissors and is fired. As a file clerk, she stamps on the letters with her feet when told to stamp them and files papers with a fingernail file when told to file them. And when she goes to work for a doctor, well, you'll just have to read this book to your child to find out what mischief she gets into there. Fortunately she makes a terrific cream puff, because when she remembers she forgot to fill them and goes by the Rogers', they hire her back, because those cream puffs are just oh so good.

My son Devon is fast approaching three. He knows his letters, upper and lower case. He knows they make words and he loves to sit while I read Amelia Bedelia stories to him. We've been doing it for over a year now. At first I made up the story line as his didn't have the attention span or the ability to understand. Now I've started reading, pointing to the words as I go along. Ms. Parish has written an excellent series for children and in this one, Wallace Tripps illustrations set off Amelia's tales to a tee. If you want your toddler to read early, and I do, then this is a series for you.

Editorial Review:

In this vibrant edition, newly recolored by the original illustrator, Amelia Bedelia's job search gets her into another ‘homonym hot seat because she does what she's told'literally. For example, she gets a job as a file clerk, only she takes out a nail file and shreds the papers she's supposed to file away! The comic convolutions are endless and endlessly enjoyable.'The Baton Rouge Advocate Magazine.

I thought that this was a pretty good book and that I would recommend it to someone else. In this story there are these black people that own land thats a forest and these white people want to cut almost all the trees in the forest so they said that they would give them money but since they cut down more than theypaid for so one of the kids went to get there dad. he came back and set up dynimites all over and was going to kill himself and the lumber man if they didn't get out right then.

Editorial Review:

With the depression bearing down on her family and food in short supply, Cassie Logan isn't sure where her next meal will come from. But there is one thing that she knows will always be there-the whispering trees outside her window. Cassie's trees are a steady source of comfort to her, but they also happen to be worth a lot of money. When Mr. Andersen tries to force Big Ma to sell their valuable trees, Cassie can't just sit by and let it happen. She knows that her family needs the money, but something tells her that they need the trees just as much. The beloved heroine of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry enchants us again in this story of strength and pride.

Karina 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I agree with many people that the Land is a very interesting and factual story about a boy in the 1860's who was the son of a rich and wealthy landowner, who married an african american after the Civil War was over. It tells how Paul had a great life and was not discriminated when he was young. But when he and his half brother are seperated his half brother turns his back on him and Paul learns that the world is not fair and not everyone is equal. Paul has no friends because when he was with the african americans they think he is too white and when he is with the white people they think he is too dark.

Editorial Review:

The son of a prosperous landowner and a former slave, Paul-Edward Logan is unlike any other boy he knows. His white father has acknowledged him and raised him openly-something unusual in post-Civil War Georgia. But as he grows into a man he learns that life for someone like him is not easy. Black people distrust him because he looks white. White people discriminate against him when they learn of his black heritage. Even within his own family he faces betrayal and degradation. So at the age of fourteen, he sets out toward the only dream he has ever had: to find land every bit as good as his father's, and make it his own. Once again inspired by her own history, Ms. Taylor brings truth and power to the newest addition to the award-winning Logan family stories.

What I think of The Prince and the Pauper 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I read the book The Prince and the Pauper, by Mark Twain. It is a book about Edward, the Prince of Wales, and Tom, a poor boy from the streets of London. Tom ventures out to the palace to meet a real prince, which was his lifelong desire. Edward rescues Tom from a crowd that jeered at him because of he was clothed in rags. The two become friends. They switch clothes and realize that they look exactly alike! But then everyone mistakes Edward for being the poor boy and Tom for being the prince. The boys are separated.
Tom is thought to be the Prince by everyone in the palace. When Henry VIII dies, Tom is declared Edward VI, King of England. He denies it and tries to tell them he is a pauper, but they think he is mad and teach him what he needs to know to act like a king. Tom learns to enjoy being king, but wants to return to his home and family.
Edward goes on a quest to find his way back to the kingdom and Tom. During his adventure, he meets Miles Hendon, a kind fellow who was on a journey to his home, for he had finally gotten out of a war he was fighting. Miles rescues him from another crowd that is about to throw him into the Thames River. He decides to take Edward in with him. Together, they travel to Miles' old home and then to the palace to declare Edward's rightful place as the prince.
I enjoyed this book very much. It has got a straightforward theme: Don't judge a book by its cover. I would recommend this book to either teens or adults, since Twain uses some hard-to-understand archaic English words like "hither" and "thither". This book is book is not easy to read, but has interesting adventures.

Editorial Review:

A pauper caught up in the pomp of the royal court.

A prince wandering horror-stricken through the lower depths of English society.

Out of the theme of switched identities, Mark Twain fashioned both a scathing attack upon social hypocrisy and injustice, and an irresistible comedy imbued with the sense of high-spirited play that belongs to his happiest creative period.

Ben Franklin's Fooling Around 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Benjamin Franklin fooled around a lot. It wasn't because he was lazy; he had a strong curiosity to find out things, and he did. But once he knew something, he didn't fool around. He knew he didn't want to work for his brother, so he left. He knew England was wrong to tax the colonies the way they did, so he told them so. He knew how to invent things that others needed, so he did. This was Ben Frankilin. Read of the little and big events in his life.

I thought Whats the Big Idea Ben Franklin , by Jean Fritz was a preaty well written book. I'll give it four stars out of five. His magnificent contributions to human life wanted me to keep turn the page more and more. I was esspecially impressed with his discoverence of proved electrical theories. If electric was never proved by theory, life today would not be the same. I thought this was a preaty good book and if some one is interested in this book about famous history they shoule definatly go to their local library and check this book out.

My Favorite Book 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This was my favorite book when I was little. I made my mother read it to me at least one hundred times a day. Now that I have children of my own, I want to share it with them. My 3 year old son knows most of the book by heart now. I look forward to cuddling up with my children every night before bed to read this story together.

Thanks for bringing back some memories 5 out of 5 stars.

I was a substitute librarian, and was thrust into a storytime. The librarian handed me this boook and said it was a great ice breaker. I read it to the class, and it's true! This book practically tells itself - and the kids loved making the animals sounds with me. Well, I decided I was having so much fun, I shifted gears and became a children's librarian, and used this book a LOT! Not only fun with the various animals, but good vocabulary (hissed, swished, etc.) and the children really do get to know new words and also know instinctively what they mean. I cannot praise it highly enough - bought it for both my nephews!
