This is a wonderful book. This author captures the magic of children's imaginations, and creates lovable and believable characters out of the unexpected;dolls! Definitely a recommended book for younger girls who still love to play, or for adults/young adults who want to reminisce on their childhoods.
If you enjoy this book, here are some other great children's books that you might enjoy:

The Doll House by Rumer Godden - Review 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In The Doll's House, by Rumer Godden, Tottie Plantaganet is a wooden farthing doll inherited by Emily and Charlotte Dane from their great Aunt Laura. After being inherited by the girls, Tottie tells her doll family about the old dollhouse she previously lived in, and all the beauty it possessed. To the family's amazement, Emily and Charlotte become heirs to the dollhouse; however, they also inherit Marchpane, a porcelain and haughty doll. The family must overcome Marchpane's attempts to keep them out of the house, so they can live as they have always dreamed.
The book appeals to young girls, rather than boys, because contains dolls (two of which are male) and dollhouses. I was fond of this book because it brought back memories of my childhood when I played with dolls. This book is an outstanding volume for someone with imagination and wishful thinking.

Editorial Review:

Story about a brave 100-year old Dutch doll, her family, their Victorian dollhouse home, and the two little English girls to whom they belong.

Mississippi Wonders 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Mississippi Bridge is about Stacy Logan, her brothers and sisters, and Josias Williams. Josias Williams is taking the bus to a new job because a flood coming through the town ruined his last job. In the 1930s black people were not treated equally because of their skin color. But then Stacy Logan, her brothers and sisters, and Josias Williams and Stacey's grandmother get on the bus but something happens and the town has a horrifying nightmare that will change the townspeople's lives forever.
The book takes place in Mississippi in the 1930s during the time of the great depression.
The problem is really about how Jeremy Simms always watches as the weekly bus comes from Jackson and goes through his town. But one day on the way from the stop the bus goes over a bridge and a flash flood sweeps the bus into the rivers. The bus ride becomes more than just a daily routine, it becomes a situation between life and death.
The theme of the story is about four kids always being told you can't try this on unless you are going to buy it because they are black. But one day they get on the bus and their friend Josias and Stacy's grandmother get kicked off the bus and the four kids are left alone. The bus driver doesn't know that a flash flood has occurred. Something happens that changes their lives forever.
The main characters are Josias Williams, Stacy Logan, her brothers and sisters, and Jeremy Simms who is trying to find a job.
The mood of the story is very adventurous and can be at some times mad, scary, and sad at one time.
The grade and age group for this book is for 5th grade and from 11-13 years old students/kids.

Editorial Review:

Jeremy Simms watches from the porch of the general store as the passengers board the weekly bus from Jackson. When several white passengers arrive late, the driver roughly orders the black passengers off to make room. Then, in the driving rain, disaster strikes, and Jeremy witnesses a shocking end to the day's drama. Set in Mississippi in the 1930s, this is a gripping story of racial injustice.

The Friendship 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I thought that this was a pretty good book . In the story these boys went to this market to get there aunt Callies head medicine. When they got there they saw a family friend that was going there to get his sardines and some candy canes. The boy that was there would not give him what he wanted so he asked for the owner and he came out to see what the problem was and he gave him what he asked for. When he went back in there to get some tabacco the guy who owns the market shot him in the leg.

Tom-Bee 4 out of 5 stars.

I thought that this was a pretty good book. I would defanately recamen this to other readers. The book ended in a wierd spot but it was good.

Editorial Review:

Cassie Logan and her brothers have been warned never to go to the Wallace store, so they know to expect trouble there. What they don't expect is to hear Mr. Tom Bee, an elderly black man, daring to call the white storekeeper by his first name. The year is 1933, the place is Mississippi, and any child knows that some things just aren't done. Black & white illustrations .

Some good history here -- Myths persist, though 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 23 people found this review helpful.

Jean Fritz' attempt to tell the story of Paul Revere's ride is an engaging tale, but it is riddled with the myths that have accumulated around this pivitol event in U.S. history. She does a good job giving Revere's personal history, and readers can get a good sense of the context in which he was working. Still, she refuses to let go of some myths that have long since been proven false.
Of course, no historian still believes in the "one if by land, two if by sea" nonsense that Longfellow invented for his 19th century poem. But Fritz includes it here as if it is fact. And how's this for a misleading version of the reasons behind the revolution: "Now the English were causing trouble, telling the colonies they couldn't do this and couldn't do that, slapping on taxes, one after another." Hmm.
Well, what Fritz doesn't tell you is that the "this and that" the English were telling the colonists not to do consisted primarilly of burning native settlements and murdering the inhabitants. The English had a non-confrontational policy toward the natives along the colonial border, while the Americans wanted to move in and take the land, by force if necessary. This was one of the main disagreements between the colonies and the English, but Fritz hides this behind some silly word choices. She also neglects to tell readers that the taxes were being levied to pay for the defense of the colonies during the French-Indian War (quite a reasonable stance from their point of view).
This book is OK on a very surface level, when read as a strict adventure tale. But don't make the mistake of thinking that this is very serious history.

Beautiful Book for Bedtime 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I love this book because it is one of the few Christian children's books I have seen that have real grown-up prayer in it and not paraphrased age-appropriate scripture.

While we have lots of prayer and bible books aimed at toddlers (my son is two), and we love those books too, it was starting to bother me that my son never heard REAL prayer and scripture. Sure, I can read to him from the Bible, but with no pictures he is not interested.

This book has gorgeous old-fashioned illustrations along with classic prayers in grown-up language. We read a prayer from this book every night after reading a few age-appropriate books. The prayer is nice for both of us and he really enjoys the pictures.

I would definitely buy more Tasha Tudor books.

Editorial Review:

Here is a collection of favorite, familiar prayers selected from Tasha Tudor's inspirational little book First Prayers, newly reissued in a special Life Favors edition. Tasha's delicate full-color artwork is showcased by a new jacket and interior design. Refreshed with a brand-new look, these prayers will once again inspire and delight Tasha Tudor fans, young and old.

Inspirational classic 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

One of the most persistent themes in American pop and literary culture is the switched identity plot. Movies like Garfield 2, Face-Off, Big Business and Double Dragon have been based on this trick. Where did it all start? Probably with this children's classic by Mark Twain. Set in Renaissance England, it tells the story of two boys who look exactly alike, except one is a prince and the other is a poor boy. The two meet each other, exchange places, and have loads of fun. All ends well as they each regain their proper places with more wisdom and friends than before.

The text of the book is readable by most elementary school kids, though the length is quite long for a children's work. The dialogue is English, and might make hard reading the first time around, and the comedy might be dry for those not used to it. But the book is enjoyable and totally appropriate. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

Tom Canty and Edward Tudor look alike, but their lives could hardly be more different. For Edward is Prince (and heir to the throne), whilst Tom is a miserable pauper. Until one day fate intervenes, and for a while each must see how the other lives.

The Cay Book Reveiw 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Cay by Theodore Taylor was a very good book in my opinion. I say that because the book has two very well described characters. One main character is Timothy a big, black man with white hair in his seventies. Another main character is Philip a white boy that is eleven and is blind for most of the story. The story began in February of 1942 at the beginning of World War Two.

The plot in this story was also very good. It begins on the small island of Willemstad that had been attacked by German submarines. Philip's mom and Philip both leave to go to America by ship (Philip's mom is afraid of airplanes and Philips dad has to stay on the island because that is where he works). Their ship gets torpedoed in the ocean and Timothy pulls Philip on his raft that he found (Timothy was one of the ship's crewmen). Then Philip goes blind from a wooden plank hitting his head. They drift around on the ocean for days then land on the cay. Timothy and Philip survive on the cay by eating sea grapes, coconuts, fish, and Langosta (a lobster without claws). While on the cay, Timothy dies from injuries received in a hurricane, and a few days later Philip is picked up by an American ship. In the end, Philip meets back up with his parents and they stay in Willemstad and don't move back to America.

One of the main themes of this book was racism. One example of racism used is when Philip's mom doesn't let him go down to the docks because of the black people there. Another is how Philip first responds to Timothy. Philip first thinks that Timothy is just an ugly and stubborn black man, but when Timothy dies Philip realizes that Timothy was only stubborn because it was the only way for Philip to survive alone on the cay. I thought that this was a great book that you should read if you like survival and adventure stories.

Editorial Review:

In the novel The Cay, a young white boy and an old black man are stranded on a small sandy cay in the Caribbean Sea following a shipwreck. Eleven-year-old Phillip was blinded by flying debris when a torpedo struck the SS Hato, and old Timothy has taught him how to survive. This prequel-sequel tells the rest of their tale in alternating chapters--the compelling story of two very different people who share the courage and tenacity to turn their dreams into reality.

Amusing and Timeless Reading 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Mark Twain captures human nature at it's best and worst in this book. The collection of quotes by Twain "alphabetically" comment honestly on topics ranging from adultery to government to money to youth. Such insight into humanity rarely comes along in a lifetime (or several lifetimes!) His words in truly reflect society during his lifespan and, as I have reread this book several times, the passages reflect society today. This book is an "easy read" as it contains memorable quotes as well as portions of a variety of speeches, papers and books/stories Mr. Twian wrote. You can read the entire book at one sitting or glance through it if you have a few minutes to spare and still feel the impact of his writings , thus finding yourself highly amused by his insight. You can pick up the book again at a later time and enjoy it as much as before. The "authors"/collectors/writers of this book are to be applauded.

Editorial Review:

Arranged alphabetically by topic, from Adam to Youth, and culled from his novels, speeches, letters, and conversations, this anthology of quotes is timeless and represents the very essence of Mark Twain -- hilarious, cranky, and insightful.

Cassie Logan 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I would recommend this book because it speaks the truth and it doesn't hold anything back. I think that people who came from this background would like the story because it's our nature. It's easier for people who came from a similar background; it would be easier to understand. Some are used to hearing real southern slang 24/7. They can get into depth as I did, and relate to the story. They can read," in between the lines", the message is more clearly sent. This book was so real and you felt like you were there. I personally think that it wasn't hard to concentrate on the story because it was such a page-turner. Something was always exciting or causing anxiety. I learned a lot of things by reading this book. The message that was mainly focused was that racism wasn't a joke. For some people, the details got too emotional. The Road to Memphis was a terrific book.

I thought it was a great book, it had a lot of action in it. I would recomend it for anybody but it has a lot of bad language in it so be carefull. There is a fight between a couple of black kids and a couple of white kids, in the end brains win over fists. The fight starts when a couple of white people think they are better than all black people, are they right or wrong? Read the book to find out. :)

i thought this book was great! it had a lot of action in it. I would not recomend this book for people that are young, beause it has a lot of bad language in it. But i would recomnend it for people 11 and older. Their is a fight between a black and white kid. And if you would like to learn about what they did in the olden days to colored people then this would be a good book to read. the fight was started when Hammer and David come across a white kid. And the white kid knocks David down, and if you want to know the rest of the story you will have to read the book. =P

Editorial Review:

During a drought, the Logan family shares its well water with all its neighbors, black and white alike. But David and Hammer find it hard to share with Charlie Simms, who torments them because they are black. "A brief but compelling story about prejudice and the saving power of human dignity".--"School Library Journal".
