Re-enacting childhood 5 out of 5 stars.

These pigs were a favorite growing up, so I was please to discover them in print for awhile in paperback. The book, as most of their adventures, is a little imaginative, a little retro (mom always ends with a cream cake or pie for her boys), and usually a nice social lesson. Too bad the author moved on from this style of work.

Editorial Review:

Readers will go hog-wild for this rip-roaring adventure yarn starring Tomi Ungerer's beloved Mellop family. When Mr. Mellop finds clues to a sunken treasure in a dusty old trunk, he and his porcine family are soon embarked on a voyage that will have them donning scuba gear, exploring an undersea wreck, fending off a giant octopus, and getting shipwrecked on a desert island. First published in 1957, this charming tale showcases the wit, imagination, and captivating illustrations that make Ungerer one of the great children's storytellers.

"Adorable!" 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book was one of my sisters' and my favorites when we were kids about 30 years ago.

I particularly remember that in the illustrations, each pig in the family had a "gimmick" that carried throughout the book. (One little pig is always shown from the rear; one always has a flower in his mouth.) I also remember how clever each member of the family was, and how they stuck together through thick and thin.

The I can't wait until this one comes back in print so I can read it to my children.

Robber barons writing children's books? 1 out of 5 stars.

I found this book to be appallingly outdated. The Mellopsdrill for oil in the forest while the mom cheerfully "practicesout door cooking" and then all must flee when a passing motorist carelessly sets a forest fire. This book, written in 1958 when Standard Oil was king and women were third class citizens, is 1950s pulp and remains in the past--not on any child's bookshelf. Although it could serve as a good example of how far society has come in understanding and environmental awareness.

Editorial Review:

Tomi Ungerer's intrepid family of pigs faces new challenges in this delightful tale first published in 1958. Bad-tasting water from a woodland brook prompts Mr. Mellop to look for oil, a decision that leads to a gushing well promising great riches -- until a raging forest fire intervenes. But not to worry. By the end of the story, the Mellops are safely back home enjoying cake and ice cream.

Editorial Review:

In this wonderful children's book, Tortoni Tremolo is a gifted musician whose neighbor, a fortune teller, prefers TV to the strains of Mozart coming from next door. She puts a curse on Tortoni that makes his instruments fill with musical notes as he plays. Tortoni despairs until he discovers that the notes can be eaten -- & every piece of music he plays has a flavor all its own. When he goes into business producing great music for people to eat, he becomes a national celebrity. Then something truly incredible happens that makes the witch reconsider her curse & shows the world a life beyond the unrelenting din of TV. Author & illustrator Tomi Ungerer won the Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustration for his lifetime contributions to children's literature.

Pigs Spelunking. Good v. Evil. Great Book. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Based on my memory of thisbook from 30(?) years ago, it concerns a pig family, the Mellops, who embark on an adventure into a cave. They face not only subterranean wonders, but also a band of robbers hiding their loot. I won't give away the ending because I don't remember it.

Hurray for the Mellops reprints! (Normally, I don't care for exclamation points, but it seemed suitable here.

A fun book for kids 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a really fun story about a family of adventrous. Kids will really enjoy them and grown-ups will have fun reading them too.

Editorial Review:

When Mr. Mellops's golf ball rolls into a crevice, the family decides to go spelunking. They gather the necessary equipment and head down. In the cave, they are dazzled by rock formations. The junior archaeologists proceed to dig out tools from earlier civilizations when a flash flood threatens to drown them. Just as they escape the flood, they stumble upon a smuggling ring! 32 color illustrations.

Great historical fiction 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I remember borrowing this book so many times from the school library and even did a book report on it. The struggle to adjust to a completely different lifestyle that Koichi and his family go through are poignantly displayed in the book. Having to go from a feudal warrior culture to California's gold rush era is quite a shock to one's cultural sensibilities. I applaud Yoshiko Uchida and this wonderful book of hers.

Editorial Review:

Here is a story based on a true, if almost forgotten, incident in California history: the founding of the Wakamatsu colony, a Japanese society near Sacramento, by exiles from the wars that wracked Japan and devoted to the growing of tea and the cultivation of mulberry for silk worms.

The year is 1869 and young Koichi dreams of becoming a samurai like his father. But when their clan is defeated along with the Shogun in a fierce battle, he suddenly finds himself going to America to become a farmer. Even there Koichi and his father cannot escape confrontation, as hostile miners bring tragedy to Wakamatsu. It is impossible not to get caught up in Koichi’s own hopes, fears, and joys as he makes a difficult decision worthy of the noblest samurai.
