A truly wonderful story 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Swan Lake is a beautiful book. The story of the old man, the little girl, the true prince and the beautiful Odette is told with simple elegance through the eyes of the wise old grandfather. I read this book out loud with my friend, and we could have stayed up all night, caught up in the beautiful, heartbreaking tale of love and life and learning. We laughed and cried, and sat stiff with suspense. We were filled by turns with sorrow and joy, despair and hope and sometimes a mixture of them all. Everyone should read Swan Lake, for this book is truly a treasure, a gem that will shine brightly for years to come.

A truly beautiful book 5 out of 5 stars.

I still remember the first time I read Swan Lake; I was in tears. I was not sad, exactly, but deeply moved. This book is timeless, and the prose is beautifully balanced. The story itself is strong and very well-written, with some very neat characters. This book could be read to slightly older children, and there are clear-cut 'villains' and 'heroes', but the heroes are human, they can fall and make mistakes, and this story is not for those who love unambiguous happy endings. Helprin is too aware of the world for that. I would also not recommend it for people who greatly dislike reading fantasy. It has a vague feel of a fairy tale, though it is too real and vivid for that. The pictures, by Chris Van Allsburg (known for The Polar Express), are extremely beautiful and fit the writing style. I would highly recommend this book, as well as the other two in this series, A Veil of Snows and A City in Winter. Swan Lake can stand alone, but the other two complement it very well. I don't even know how many times I have read these books, but I found them rewarding every time.

Editorial Review:

The two-time Caldecott medalist illustrates Mark Helprin's enchanting story of the characters in Tchaikovsky's famous ballet.

Ease the good-byes 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My young children enjoyed this book because they could identify with the content of a young boy who doesn't want his parents to leave him with a babysitter for the night. This delightful story proves that not all picture books have to be syrupy-sweet. Children see themselves in the young character who refuses to let his parents leave without a fuss. You know that old adage that "misery loves company"? Judith Viorst is the champion at depicting young children's complaints, and this selection is no exception. Share it with your young child today.

My kids love this book! 4 out of 5 stars.

I didn't think that much of this book, but my 2-year olds love it, and want me to read it over and over again. It's helping my son learn to deal with his separation anxiety. So, I recommend it!

Editorial Review:

This little boy will do anything to avoid an evening with the baby-sitter. He pleads with his parents. He begs. He bargains. Maybe he has a fever of a hundred and ten. Maybe he'll run away. Maybe he won't say good-bye!

A Wonderful Story for Christmas! 5 out of 5 stars.
37 of 40 people found this review helpful.

This is such a wonderful book! Every year I look for a special book to share with my family, this year it will be The Last Straw. It is a humorous tale that also teaches a valuable lesson about humility. The Last Straw is right up there with Santa Calls and The Red Ranger Came Calling. I highly recommend this book!

A Christmas Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
26 of 26 people found this review helpful.

A proud camel is selected to accompany the Magi described in Matthew to carry gifts for Jesus. He tries to get out of the journey (he has other commitments), but is convinced otherwise by some sand-blowing voices. As his journey continues, so does his burden, as gifts are added to his back. A young child even adds a straw for the baby's bed, that, well, I don't want to spoil the ending ("Will this straw cause me to fall?").

We used this book as the basis for our church's family Christmas Eve service. The children participated in a recreation of the Christmas stories in Matthew and Luke, and then settled in for a reading of this great book. During the story, we had two people in a camel costume come through the aisles, as "presents" were loaded onto baskets on the "camel's" back. It was a great success, and helped bring alive the oft-repeated Bible stories.

Thury has a great skill of weaving in enough adult humor to keep the attention of even the most holiday-weary parent (this camel complains of his joints, gout and sciatica, which all parents and granparents can relate to after weeks of holiday shopping, eating and "assembly-required" efforts). My seven year old has requested it again and again. Original, enchanting and a great twist on both the Christmas story and "the straw that broke the camel's back." Or did it? The pictures are outstanding.

Editorial Review:

A prideful camel named Hoshmakaka learns the value of humility as he bears more and more gifts to the baby Jesus at Bethlehem.

Editorial Review:

"Long ago, in the time of the old emperor, I was young and just beginning in my profession. The Usurper was there, and one could not escape his evil presence.... An enthralling story in the time-honored tradition of Lewis Carroll and C. S. Lewis. Although her kingdom has lived in peace for many years, the queen has always feared the day the Usurper would return to plunge her city into darkness. Even as she rejoices in the birth of her first child, she sees signs of impending danger. Her husband and his army have vanished in the wilderness. With only a short time left to reinforce the kingdom's defense, her faithful general masterminds a strategy to keep the city safe, against great odds. But even when the Usurper's victory may seem to be complete, the mysterious veil of snows hides a symbol of undying hope. The Veil of Snows is a moving and powerful tale about the light of the human spirit, light that can never be wholly extinguished. The Veil of Snows, which stands on its own as a compelling story, also completes the Helprin/Van Allsburg trilogy that began with their first collaboration, Swan Lake, which Publishers Weekly called "elegant and beautiful...wise and musical." As Kirkus noted in a pointered review of A City in Winter, the second book, "The sheer scale of the city [Helprin] envisions will enthrall readers of any age...." Mark Helprin is the acclaimed author of books for adults and children, including A Soldier of the Great War and the best-selling Winter's Tale (both Harcourt). He lives in New York state. Chris Van Allsburg is a two-time Caldecott winner, for Jumanji and The Polar Express (both Houghton).

Practice your Spanish with volcanoes and dinosaurs 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've been listening to audio books to practice my Spanish for a while now, and I've always found Fonolibro's CDs to have great voice acting and narration. My only complaint with this one is that it was rather short (only 2 CDs, from a 250 page book), and a lot of good episodes from the book were cut. Still, if you want a simple way to practice your Spanish and listen to a classic story in the process, this is a great place to start.

Sciencie and romanticism walking each other's hand 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It's 8 years now since I first read the book. Since then i've reread it once more. What can i say about the book? it's enthralling, daring, imaginative in its vocabulary and many things more. I'm keen of adventure books but when you add exotic landscapes to accurate data you make a masterpiece. You may think the book does not deserve its 5 stars but just read the story and tell me 'du ecrivain français'.Bye

LOVE IT! 5 out of 5 stars.

I just reread this book. It is one of my most favorite books of all time. Highly recommended to any teenager who thinks they are invincable.

Cautionary Tale of Drinking 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Izzy has always been part of the in crowd. She is pretty and relatively popular, decent in school and athletic enough to play tennis and be on the high school cheerleading squad. She is popular enough to be the first of her friends to be invited to a party by a senior. She is excited even though she doesn't particularly like this guy, Marco. Being asked out by him will be good for her social standing, as will being seen at a party with all upperclassmen.

At the party Izzy has a pretty god time mingling with other students. When it is time to go, though, she sees that Marco has been drinking. She thinks maybe she should call her parents or accept an offer from someone else who wants to drive her home. But she doesn't want to seem like a lot of trouble, so she lets Marco take her. Before she knows it, she is in the hospital after a serious car accident, and she's lost one of her legs.

No one seems to be able to act normally around Izzy. Her family tries too hard to make things okay, and her best friends are too freaked out even to visit her much at the hospital. They have dropped out of her life now that she isn't the pretty and popular girl she once was. Only an acquaintance, Rosamunde, has any sense at all. She doesn't try to ignore the fact that Izzy has a tough time ahead of her or that she is no longer who she once was. And through her friendship, Izzy begins to think that things might be okay after all.

I liked some of the characters in this story. They had realistic personalities, from Rosamunde's lack of tact to Joel and Jack's joking, to Francie's obnoxiousness. Izzy was very shallow, though, and she was weak to have accepted a ride with Marco. Her weakness was never really dealt with. This book also read like a cliche cautionary tale, the sort of thing a parent would tell a teen when trying to convince them not to drink and drive. Parts of it were like a lecture.

Editorial Review:

This time-saving, easy-to-use teacher guide includes inspiring lesson plans which provide a comprehensive novel unit--the legwork is done for you! The guide incorporates essential reading, writing and thinking practice. (This is NOT the paperback novel.)

Angus and Sadie Book Review 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Angus and Sadie by Cynthia Voigt is about a couple who adopt two puppies. The male puppy's name is Angus. Angus is more brave and clever than Sadie. Sadie the female puppy is shy, and slow at learning tricks. Angus and Sadie go on a lot of adventures. Sadie almost gets lost in the woods with a sheep. They live on a farm with animals and mean barn cats, who try to jump on Sadie, but she runs away.

This book is teaching you that even though you may not be the same you can still be friends. Like even though Sadie and Angus are different, they are still friends. It is also like that in the world because everyone in the world is different.

Angus and Sadie is a very good book to read if you like dogs. It reminds me of my dog. You might also like to read it because it has good pictures. Angus and Sadie get into a lot of mischief on the farm. You should read Angus and Sadie.

Editorial Review:

They're brother and sister, but Angus is bigger. He is a good, brave, and clever dog—and he likes that. Sadie isn't as quick to learn—or to obey. Angus thinks she's scared of everything, but Sadie knows that's not true.

Newbery Medalist Cynthia Voigt's story of border collie puppies growing up on a farm in Maine is for animal lovers of all ages, and for anyone who's ever had—or ever wondered what it would be like to have—a brother or sister just like themselves, but very, very different.
