Pretty Good Start 4 out of 5 stars.

Avery, Baby, and Owen Carlyle moves into Blair Waldorf's old place on the Upper East Side. Avery immediately wants to be a teen socialite, Owen is desperate to find the girl he fell for the summer before who lives in NY as well and Baby just wants to go home to Nantucket. As they all quickly find out what they want isn't easy. Avery's makes enemies with the wrong girl in school: popular girl Jack Laurent. Owen quickly finds out that the girl he wanted is the girlfriend of his only friend Rhys Sterling and Baby tries to get herself in trouble so she can be expelled and go home.
It's a good start to a new series and a lot of people are going to make the mistake of comparing the Carlyles and the other characters to the old characters of the now retired original series but you have to see it in a different light as a different series which is what it is. There is very little mention of the old characters in the blog and readers will have to know that the B in the book isn't Blair and the J isn't Jenny. Unlike in The It Girl, the characters aren't cookie cutters of the ones in the original Gossip Girl series. Although this book is mainly about the triplets, the character that makes the book interesting is Jack, who is supposed to be the Blair (or queen bee) of this series although if you ask me she's more like Cammie from the A-List. Jack stands out in the series and I can't wait to see what she does next since I know she wants revenge on the Carlyle girls after what happens at the end. So far none of the guys work for me. Just like with the original series there are only two main ones: Owen and Rhys and one supporting one, J.P. (Jack's boyfriend) whose point of view we don't get to read. Owen is a little too egotistical about his looks and Rhys is too sensitive after his breakup with Kelsey who isn't worth it anyway but there has only been one book so hopefully they will improve throughout the series. I hope the series doesn't get stale and boring like The It Girl did after the first three books, though.
Grade: B+

Editorial Review:

Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen were the reigning princesses of the Upper East Side.

Until now.

In Gossip Girl, The Carlyles the inimitable Gossip Girl introduces the most fabulous sixteen year-old triplets to ever inhabit the Upper East Side. When the Waldorfs move from their apartment at the end of Don't You Forget About Me, the Carlyle triplets of Nantucket, Massachusetts--Owen, Baby, and Peyton-- move in. In the new titles of the Gossip Girl series, we will follow the Carlyles, plus three other teenagers living in gorgeous apartments, attending the most exclusive prvate schools-- the familiar Constance Billard School for Girls and St. Jude's School for Boys-- and treating New York's Upper East Side as their personal playground. Welcome to the new era.

Lucky for you, Gossip Girl is there to whisper all their juicy secrets...

A Grand Adventure 5 out of 5 stars.

Note: Some immature Mormon has been slamming my reviews because I wrote some negative reviews of books attempting to defend the Book of Mormon.

So your "helpful" votes are greatly appreciated. Thanks

In my opinion, a short review is best if you haven't read the book. I always read the longer reviews afterwards.

I read this book forty years ago in college and loved it. I also saw the movie, but as one reviewer pointed out, Phileas Fogg traveled by boat, train, car, sled, and even elephant, but never by balloon. The balloon scene was added to the movie.

Nevertheless, I loved all of Jules Verne's stories, and I highly recommend this one, whose title says it all--"Around the World in Eighty Days" on a bet that it couldn't be done.

I enjoy collecting paperback books with neat covers, and I have a couple of "Around the World in Eighty Days."

Oh, and I hope this is helpful. Read "The Other Log of Phileas Fogg," by Philip Jose Farmer. This retelling of Verne's story has Fogg going after Captain Nemo. It's great Fun. Farmer also wrote novels about Tarzan and the "Barnstormer in Oz"--very sexy.

After the fire at the barn, the school is in an uproar trying to figure out the culprits of who started it.

As readers of this addicting series already know, ever since Tinsley Carmichael came back to school she has had it in for Jenny. Jenny wasn't the one who started the fire, but that doesn't mean anything as far as Tinsley is concerned.

Bret and Kara have rumors flying about them! What will they do to stop them?

The boys are getting into the usual amount of trouble. Will they help stop the rumors of who started the fire? Or fuel them?

This weekend the prospective students are in town, meaning those already attending the school have to be on good behavior. But do they really know what that is? And does one of the new students have a dirty little secret?

LUCKY is the fifth book in the IT GIRL series, and should be read in order. I wouldn't want to let you ruin such an addictive series by reading them out of order!

Christmas Classic 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What this book speaks to me about is the magic of Christmas, not the commmercialism, something I try hard to capture each year amid the avalanche of enticements to buy and consume. I grew up not believing in the Santa that just brings presents but in the magic and spirit of giving and receiving and the joy and wonder of the season and by reading and sharing this book with my family each Christmas, I hope to capture some of that magic and wonder, for each of us to hold in amongst the chaos that surrounds us at this time of year.

Editorial Review:

For twenty years, The Polar Express has been a worldwide bestseller and Christmas
classic. To commemorate this special anniversary, this heirloom gift edition has been created. The slipcase holds a cloth copy of the book, which includes a distinctive bookplate designed by author Chris Van Allsburg exclusively for this edition. A perfect keepsake for any family, this beautiful edition can be handed down to each new generation of readers.

In 1986 The Polar Express was awarded the prestigious Caldecott Medal and hit the New York Times bestseller list. Since that time, more than six and a half million copies have been sold, and every December it faithfully reappears on national bestseller lists. In 2004, The Polar Express became a blockbuster holiday movie. The DVD release in 2005 assures, that like the book, the movie will become a holiday classic.

Don't waste your money. 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Okay, I really did try to read one of these books once, but that didn't last very long. I honestly don't understand why people even like them. There's nothing good about these books. They're just about materialistic people and their boring, superficial lives. Seems to be that all they do is drink, have sex, and backstab their "friends". How wonderful. Don't waste your money.

Editorial Review:

Welcome to New York City's Upper East Side, where the girls are dazzling, the guys are gorgeous, and the summer heat is the perfect excuse to throw a fabulous roof-deck pool party. As if we need a reason! It's our last summer together before heading off to college, and things are sizzling - no, it's not just the weather. Despite that steamy kiss on graduation night, Blair, Serena, and Nate have gone their separate ways...though not for long. Blair is off to London with her English Lord boyfriend, Serena's about to become a movie star - as if she wasn't a star already! - and Nate's rolling up his well-worn khakis and heading to the Hamptons. Back in New York, Dan and Vanessa are rekindling their love. Fiery! Watch out, this summer is going to be hotter than ever.

Great Autumn Read - a review of "The Stranger" 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Stranger is a marvelous read. It has a smart story, engaging artwork, and a strong element of mystery that ought to appeal to both children and adults.

The story begins when Farmer Bailey hears a thud and discovers that he has accidentally struck a man with his truck. He takes the man home and calls the doctor who concludes that the stranger is all right except for a loss of memory. He settles in for a stay that's a bit longer than anyone planned. Days pass, and then weeks, and the stranger never does say who is his or where he is going. In fact, he never speaks at all. But that doesn't keep the Bailey family from coming to love the stranger's quiet, friendly presence.

When the stranger does eventually recover his memory, he moves on leaving a legacy out doubt and questions as to who he is. I won't say more except that he leaves a message every fall to the Bailey family written in frost.

The Accelerated Reading (ATOS) designation for this book is 3.7 which means that the "average" 3rd Grader in the 7th month of school should be able to read it without becoming too frustrated by words they don't know.

The "official" Interest Level is supposed to be 1st thru 4th Grade.

Most younger children are going to need help to figure out and appreciate this mystery -- or to even know that there is one. But once they get the idea they are going to want to read this book again and again so they can see the clues stack up and the mystery resolve.

The enigmatic origins of the stranger that Farmer Bailey hits with his truck and brings home to recuperate seem to have a mysterious relation to the weather. Could he be Jack Frost?

'Nobody Does It Better' than Cecily von Ziegesar! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Everyone thought that the hard part applying to college was getting accepted. But, now that acceptance letters have made their way into the hands of the Upper East Side's most glamorous, it's quite obvious that deciding on which college to attend may just be even more nerve-wracking and confusing. Luckily, there's only one month left of high school for the seniors, and they plan on partying the last part of the semester away. After all, there's always time to think about college after we attend the latest sample sale.

Everything is finally falling into place for Blair Waldorf. She and Nate Archibald are back together, and she has finally handed her V card over to him. Her mother gave birth to her little baby sister, Yale; and, much to her surprise, she absolutely adores the tiny tyke, and is shaping up to be the best big sister the Upper East Side has ever seen. The only thing that has her baffled and in a perpetual state of anger is the fact that she has been wait-listed at Yale. Even worse, both Nate and Blair's best frienemy, Serena van der Woodsen snagged spots at the Ivy league she wishes to call home, making her wonder whether two of the most important people in her life will leave her behind.

Though Serena van der Woodsen has a B+ average, somehow she got accepted to all of the Ivies - Yale, Harvard, and Brown, just to name a few. Now comes the hard part. Serena never realized that she was actually into the whole college thing, but now that she's begun to think about the future, she's convinced that this is a huge decision on her part. The only problem is that she's leaning towards Yale, and, knowing that Yale is Blair's number one choice school, Serena knows that Blair will wring her neck if she accepts the spot. Time to make a tough decision - her best friend, or her future.

Nate Archibald is up to his old tricks again, smoking weed to his hearts content. The only difference is that he and Blair are finally back together, and he's convinced that the two of them will be together forever. But now that Blair has been wait-listed at Yale, he wonders if everything will work out the way he has always hoped. Maybe if he could keep his lungs clear for more than a minute or two, he'd be able to reassure Blair that the two of them will never be separated, and that she'll definitely be accepted by Yale. Too bad he's so dependent on his little marijuana friend.

Vanessa Abrams thought that things were finally back to normal between her and her morbid poet boyfriend, Dan Humphrey. The two were living together in Williamsburg, soaking up the pleasures of being a happy couple. But after an out-of-control party, and an unexpected houseguest, the two bid adieu to one another; Vanessa being left by her lonesome, and Dan being recruited as the singer/songwriter for the band The Raves. Now it's Dan's little sister, Jenny's time to misbehave. Jenny Humphrey has always been the good girl, doing what she was told, and acting demurely. But after developing a fascination with boarding school, Jenny has decided to indulge in a little debauchery of her own. Suddenly, she's partying all weekend with college-aged rockers, breaking Constance Billard's dress code, and even modeling in big-time fashion spreads alongside Serena. If Jenny's not careful, she may just end up elsewhere next year. But maybe that's what the pint-sized vixen is hoping for.

I have fallen so head-over-heels in love with the GOSSIP GIRL series, that I have been devouring one after the other, just trying to keep up with the amount of scandal and juicy storylines that seem to pop up in each addition. NOBODY DOES IT BETTER is no exception. Blair shines, as always. Nate actually takes on the role of the supportive, caring boyfriend - for about two seconds. Serena seems to be hitting a milestone in her life; finally buckling down and attempting to be serious. Vanessa seems more out-of-control than ever, but maybe a little help from one of our favorite Upper East Side princesses will help balance her out. Dan seems to be going through a crisis of sorts, finding it hard to figure out exactly what he wants to do next. But one of the shining stars within the pages of this installment is everybody's favorite little sister - Jenny. Jenny is truly shaping up to be the next Serena, and even manages to steal the spotlight from some of the seniors we all know and love, making it obvious that she may just be ready to run the show. There's no question about it, NOBODY DOES IT BETTER than Cecily von Ziegesar!

Editorial Review:

he uptown girls are headed downtown as Serena and Jenny take on their new fabulous roles as rock-star model girlfriends of New York's hottest band, The Raves. Meanwhile, Dan is too busy drowning his sorrows in empty bottles to notice a mysterious French beauty who has a penchant for dirty, Jim Morrison-wannabe lead singers. Blair takes residence at the Plaza to think about her future. Will she become a gun-toting international spy or Manhattan's snobbiest society hostess? Decisions are so difficult! Sounds like everyone needs a day off at the spa. And Senior Spa Day promises to serve up further doses of scandal for New York's busiest private-school vixens.

A WELL TOLD STORY AND THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE TOP LINE. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Sweetest Fig, by Chris Van Allsburg is one of those unique books that is simply "different." I can think of no other way of describing this book, other than delightfully and simply "quirky." It is an absolute delight for both young and old. It is a simple story of an uptight dentist, a long suffering dog, an old, poor lady down on her luck, and two very interesting, magic figs which will make your dreams come true. The dentist takes the two magic figs, rather begrudgingly, as payment for dental work done for the old lady.

Now this is enough of the story line. This is a story of greed and the consequences of greed. The art work in this small book is absolutely wonderful. The longer you study each frame, the better it gets. The text is quite simple and very easy to understand. The story explores a side of human nature (for some people) that needs to be explored. Your kids will be running into individual like our unlikeable dentist all of their lives, and this book will give them something to remember and something to snicker about as they get older. Now some folk, I like to call them the "hand-wringers" will think that the story, and the way it is told, may not be appropriate for younger children. Yes, there is some implied mild violence, some very sly and vague Freudian imagery (if your child can spot this, then she or he is well beyond the understanding level of most adults and you probably need to upgrade the child's reading list.) and indeed, the way the greedy dentist treats his dog is not nice at all. This of course is the responsibility of each individual parent to make this decision, but for the life of me, I cannot find the objection here.

This wonderful morality tale gives the parent loads of little items that can be discussed with the child as the story is being read, and there are many little lessons to be learned here. I have read this book to children in the class room as young as six and they all certainly got the meaning of the story, enjoyed it, and loved it when the dentist got what was coming to him. Let us not underestimate the brightness of our children. In many ways they are much smarter and more perceptive than we are. Recommend this one highly. (Love the little dog, by the way).

"These figs are very special," the woman whispered. "They can make your dreams come true." -- Thus Monsieur Bibot, the cold-hearted dentist, was given two ordinary-looking figs as payment for extracting a tooth from an old woman's mouth. Monsieur Bibot refused to believe such nonsense and proceeded to eat one of the figs for a bedtime snack. Although it was possibly the finest, sweetest fig he had ever tasted, it wasn't until the next morning that Monsieur Bibot realized it indeed had the power to make his dreams come true. While dragging his poor dog, Marcel, out for his walk, he discovered that his strange dream from the night before was becoming all too real. Determined to make good use of the second fig, Monsieur Bibot learns to control is dreams. But can he control Marcel? Once again Chris Van Allsburg explores the mysterious territory between fantasy and reality in an uncanny tale that will intrigue readers of all ages.
