A lovely tale at any age 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this book in college and was enchanted all the same. A lifelong fan of sci-fi and fantasy, I loved the story as well as the illustrations. I plan on holding onto this book forever - and to share it with my own children and with the children of friends and family.

Love story of a fiery princess and brave hero 5 out of 5 stars.

This story and the beautiful pictures will delight youngsters. Older children and teens might like reading, along with it, the Old English poem, "Kemp Owyne" upon which it is based. I love it myself and I'm well above the age of discression!

A Good Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved the book Dove Isabeau by Jane Yolen. Although it is filled with action and excitement Dove Isabeau was not at all gory and even though it was scary, it was a good book. The characters were amazing. They had great dialog!
(For example)Kemp Onwain a handsome man studying sorcery. He loves Dove Isabeau a young girl turned into a dragon by a witch who has eyes as green as May but a heart as bleak as February. Oh and remember the white cat that helps Kemp Owain on his quest to save Isabeau. The plot was amazing and very dramatic. It was also sad.
The Theme was love someone for who they are, not for beauty. All the men who loved Dove Isabeau for beauty were devoured by Isabeau as a dragon.
The book started when Isabeau's mother dies and her father marries a witch. The brilliant yet evil witch hates Isabeau and is always talking to a crystal ball hoping that she can find a terrible fate for Isabeau. One night a frightened lizard climbs on to the glass ball. The witch sees and knows that she must turn Isabeau into a dragon. She collects herbs trailed by the cat.
Isabeau greets her stepmother at the door and they go up to Isabeau's mother's room together (which is now filled with dark magic.) The Which waves her hands so Isabeau cannot move or protest. Then she throws the herbs in Isabeau's face Screaming," herbs of evil herbs of woe change the shape the shape of Isabeau."
Isabeau feels her shape change. She sprouts wings and her gown bursts. Then shiny red scales appeared all over her body. Isabeau is now a dragon and only Kemp Owain can save her (he will soon he will be turned to stone.)
One of the best things about was that it was very poetic. There was a poem on almost every other page. This is part of my favorite poem "give the red wyrm kisses three and turned to stone you'll surely be."(This poem was a clue that the white gives Kemp Onwain.)
Compared with Yolen's book the Devil's Arithmetic Dove Isabeau was less complex. But still Dove Isabeau is complex and it is also one of the best books I've ever read!

I think you can use this book for a great read aloud for kindergarten to second grade in third grade you should be able to read it to yourself. Get a grown up to help you with words and watch out for romance. It takes a certain personality to like this book, but on a scale of one to ten, Dove Isabeau gets a nine so I would suggest reading it!!!!

Unique Arthurian story 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Everyone's read the oft-accepted story of King Arthur's boyhood, right? A seemingly orphaned fosterling is raised by kindly Sir Ector, doesn't really know who he is. This story gives a mild but enjoyable twist on the old tale.

Artos is a young orphan in Sir Ector's castle, whose only playmates are the sons of Sir Ector, who often look down on him. One day, as he chases the dog Boadie into the woods, he comes across a cave that appears to have a massive dragon inside it. Though Artos is initially afraid, he befriends the ancient dragon. The dragon, in exchange for foodstuffs from the kitchen, will teach Artos wisdom.

The teachings that the dragon give Artos unconsciously change his outlook and his treatment of other people - even those below him. But after a strange incident in which the dragon temporarily vanishes, Artos discovers the truth about his friend.

Aside from the works of Gerald Morris, I don't think I've found a more likeable version of King Arthur than Artos. The lessons that he is taught are mild but creep into the mind and take root, transforming him effectively from a "bulky, unruly, illiterate boy" to a thoughtful and compassionate soul (he isn't perfect, but who is?)

The supporting cast is sparkling, from "Garlic" Meg the kitchen maid, ancient Druid wiseman Linn, and the cheerful smith who provides Artos with his first sword. The writing style is admittedly a bit bare at times, but not so much that it is difficult to read. The dialogue and visualization of the final chapter are perhaps the best part, almost mystical.

A small note to those reading this book for the first time: Read carefully what the supporting characters say, and you might just guess ahead of time what is up with the dragon.

A magical tale without real magic, this is an enjoyable tale for lovers of a darn good story and a must-see for Arthuriana nuts!

Editorial Review:

Son of the Dragon

Thirteen-year-old Artos is not as good as swordsplay, romance, or any other knightly accomplishment as his foster brothers Cai, Bedvere, and Lancot. An orphan raised by the kindly Sir Ector, he doesn't even know the identity for his parents. But one day, Artos stumbles into the cave of an old and lonely dragon who offers to teach him the game of wisdom. Artos accepts, and becomes the Pendragon--the son of the dragon, the dragon's boy. And with the dragon's guidance, Artos sets out on a journey to a remarkable destiny--one that he never dreamed could be his own.

Here there be dragons aplenty 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Jane Yolen produces more great poetry and fiction in "Here There Be Dragons," part of her short story series focusing on ghosts, angels, witches, dragons, and so forth.

It starts off with "Why Dragons?", a poem about St. George, and proceeds to the highly original "Great-Grandfather Dragon's Tale," a story from the point of view of the dragons rather than the humans. There are two evocative little drabbles (stories under a hundred words), the saddening "Dragon Woke and Stretched" and the spellbinding "Sorry the Old Man Said." "Cockfight" is what later became the Pit Dragon trilogy, a story about a young boy on a poor planet which has dragons fighting for money. "Dragon Night" is a sweet little poem, a sort of dragon lullaby. "Dragonfield" is a slightly less interesting story about an unheroic young man and a healer's daughter (and a dragon, of course).

"The King's Dragon" is the story of a member of the King's Dragoons, who has a slight problem when people keep hearing "dragoon" as "dragon." "Into the Wood" is pretty, if a little hard to understand. "Dragon's Boy," which later became a short children's novel, tells the story of the adolescent King Arthur and how he learned wisdom from a "dragon." "The Making of Dragons" is a thoroughly entertaining poem about how to construct a dragon. "One Ox, Two Ox, Three Ox, and the Dragon King" is the story of three boys called One Ox, Two Ox, Three Ox (I think their father had a screw loose), in a story partly influenced by Chinese legends. The collection ends with the wistful "Here There Be Dragons," a poem which harkens back to old maps with those words on them.

As in all of these books, Yolen includes comments and insights to the beginning of each story and poem, what caused her to write them and how they were influenced. David Wilgus's pencil drawings are realistic and soft-edged, very nice to look at and very appropriate to the contents.

A nice little collection for the dragon fanciers, much better than most story collections. Fans of Yolen's "Dragon's Boy" and "Pit Dragon" trilogy will undoubtedly enjoy this.

Editorial Review:

In Here There Be Dragons, dragons appear in every guise--ghastly, ghoulish, gentle, gargantuan--always endowed with the author’s ingenious touches. Each piece is introduced with the fascinating, and often revealing, story of its making and is illustrated with the intricate, moody pencil drawings of David Wilgus.

Shimmer Fights the Final Battle -- a review by Vijay 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

In the final book of the Dragon Series by Laurence Yep, Shimmer, the dragon princess, and Monkey and Indigo fight the last battle against the Boneless King to save Shimmers home. The Boneless King, disguised as the butcher, has evil men who try to kill Shimmer and her friends. The bonless Kings allies are very powerful and Shimmer and Monkey and Indigo nearly die When Thorn, the human boy, gets his soul stuck inside the dragon cauldron, Shimmer and her friends find it hard to continue. The Boneless King wants the cauldron because he wants to boil Shimmers home, the sea. Shimmer, Indigo, and Monkey make a long and dangerous journey to the dragon kingdom but things get worse, for Shimmers brother, Pomfret, has sided with the Boneless King.

The book starts out a little bit slowly but if you are patient you will love it. This is a great book -- it is my favorite book of the Dragon Series and maybe my favorite book ever. I rate this a five star because of Laurence Yeps great way of describing things, and of giving people actions that fit their personalities. Monkeys personality makes him the funniest character in the book -- he makes fun of Shimmer, cheats in games against her, and a lot more funny stuff. The story is full of surprises. People who like mystery, humor, and lots of adventure all in one will enjoy this book.

Editorial Review:

The dragon princess Shimmer fights the final battle to save her home

The evil, immortal Boneless King has taken possession of the powerful dragon cauldron-with the soul of Thorn, the human child, trapped inside-and has declared all-out war on dragonkind. His plan: to use the cauldron to boil the seas and destroy the dragons. And he has convinced Shimmer's brother, Pomfret, to be his ally.

The dragon princess Shimmer, the wizard Monkey, and Indigo, a human child, transform themselves into guards, horses, and even fleas to elude the despicable Boneless King. In desperation they return to the kingdom of the High King of the Dragons to recruit Shimmer's kinmates in a fight for their lives and to save the Inland Sea. Up high in the sky and down low to the underwater mountains they go to fight the Boneless King's army. Can they defeat this evil incarnate, return Thorn's soul to its human form, and restore the Inland Sea?

Prince Across the Water 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

When Bonnie Prince Charles comes home to Scotland and tries to rally his people to retake his throne from the English, he disrupts the lives of all the Scottish people. Duncan and Ewan are two boys from the same village who run off to fight for their prince - a prince they have never seen. Charles is defeated and forced to run for his life, Ewan is killed, and only Duncan is left to remember how he fought for his prince and to pass the legends on to his children.
There are several Scottish words in the text, but the authors have provided us with a little glossary at the end. They also include the factual information that was used in constructing the story. I recommend this book for readers of historical fiction. It is written on a level that makes it usable in middle school, but older readers may enjoy it as well.

Editorial Review:

When Scotland calls on all its able-bodied clans to join Prince Charlie in the march against England's tyranny, young Duncan McDonald is as ready as anyone to fight. He's grown up on Granda's stories of glory in battle, and his heart is stirred by what he knows of the young prince. But when he and his cousin Ewan run away to join the great battle at Culloden, they find themselves caught in a nightmare: not the glorious field of heroes they expected. As much as he loves his country and his prince, Duncan has to ask himself: Can anything good really come of Culloden?
Following their much-acclaimed The Queen's Own Fool and Girl in a Cage, Jane Yolen and Robert J. Harris have crafted their most chilling and affecting story yet.

Outstanding Bedtime Book for kids 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a father with a persistently open mind and a background in comparative mythology I was looking for stories and bedtime readings that encourage open thought when it comes to spiritual life. I have to say this is an outstanding book in that regard. Great visuals and good spiritual concepts without being biased one way or another. Great for a 4-7 year old I would think. My daughter is 6 and it's one of her favorites.

We like this one 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a nice story. A sweet look at a fairy child and an "earth" child and their friendship from childhood into old age.

This book has a very sweet and beautiful story written in poem style. It also has beautiful art within each page that helps to make the story seem to come to life. My daughter loves this book! A very good short story to read just before bed time.

Tom has always been a reluctant apprentice. But since his grandmother's death, he's assisted the tiger Mr. Hu in guarding the magical phoenix egg. When the phoenix hatches prematurely, Tom faces his greatest challenge of all. The phoenix believes Tom is his mother, and suddenly it's Tom's turn to be a good teacher and parent, which is especially hard when your child has the power to destroy the earth.

A full-blown war has erupted between evil Lord Vatten's troops and the Alliance led by Mr. Hu. Tom and his motley crew of friends are in for the battle of their lives—and the hardest part may be keeping their allies united in the fight.

In this exciting conclusion to the Tiger's Apprentice trilogy, Laura Ingalls Wilder Award recipient and two-time Newbery Honor author Laurence Yep reveals the ultimate strength of loyalty, friendship, and family and how the true power of magic is knowing when to use it.

"What if a dinosaur catches the flu?

Does he whimper and whine between each 'At-choo'?"

Just like kids, little dinosaurs hate being sick. And going to the doctor can be pretty scary. How DO dinosaurs get well soon? They drink lots of juice, and they get lots of rest; they're good at the doctor's, 'cause doctors know best.

Yolen and Teague capture children's fears about being sick and put them to rest with playful read-aloud verse and wonderfully amusing pictures.
