I got a stuffed animal instead of a book! 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I ordered a number of "How does a Dinosaur" books and my 3-year old girl loves them. This book, however, did not arrive. I got a stuffed dinosaur (a character from the book) with a "How do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon" tag on it, but no book. My daughter really likes the stuffed dinosaur and I see that the book is now listed as out of stock. A well-liked gift for my daughter either way.

Great 5 out of 5 stars.

I love these books. Everyone of the books in the series have met mine and my child's expectations. Of course being a boy he loves the dinosaurs and as I the mom, I love the values, manners and morals they teach.

Editorial Review:

What if a dinosaur catches the flu?Does he whimper and whine between each "At-choo"?Does he drop dirty tissues all over the floor?Does he fling his medicine out of the door?Just like kids, little dinosaurs hate being sick. And going to the doctor can be pretty scary. How DO dinosaurs get well soon? They drink lots of juice, and they get lots of rest; they're good at the doctor's, 'cause doctors know best.As in their previous book, Yolen and Teague capture children's fears about being sick and put them to rest with playful read-aloud verse and wonderfully amusing pictures.

terrified mother 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 22 people found this review helpful.

The story goes beyond bad. This is a story of three little girls that torture and kill the wolf in a premeditated way. My 4 year-old son was very sad after someone read the story to him in a school interview to preschool. He said to me that it was a bad story, and the girls have done "bad choices". I can't believe this is in the list of books recommended for 4 and 5's.

Lon Po Po 4 out of 5 stars.

Title- Lon Po Po A Red-Riding Hood Story From China
Author- Ed Young
Do you recommend this book? Yes because it is great.

The book was so good. It's about a wolf and 3 girls. The 3 girls were very scared because of the wolf so they had to figure out how to get rid of the wolf. So they decided to climb up a tree and get a rope with a basket and hang it down and the wolf got on it then they put the rope over on the other side and let go of it and the wolf fell and hit his head the wolf tried this a couple more times until the last time when he broke his heart so he went away forever.

My daughter and I both enjoyed this book. It was great to have further development of Mia's story. No one engages a child's interest like the American Girl!

Stunning novel, but with one glaring flaw 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I tend to disagree with the reviewers who say this book is unsuitable for readers under 14. I was 9 or 10 when I first read it 15 years ago and though I may not have grasped everything in it with quite the same degree of understanding that I bring to it nowadays, it certainly wasn't unsuitable. Children are far more capable of handling dark subject matter than most adults will admit. As for the 'homosexual themes' I've seen some reviewers mention... The Nazis persecuted homosexuals nearly as zealously as they persecuted the Jews. This is historical fact, and one that tends to be overlooked. Kudos to Jane Yolen for addressing it. I wouldn't necessarily hand this book to a child under 10, but it's definitely appropriate for 6th graders and up.

As for the book itself, Yolen does a lovely job of interweaving past and present, fairy tale and reality. "Gemma's" version of Briar Rose has long been one of my favorite modern retellings. There are some issues with the book--the shallowness of the minor characters, the inordinate convenience of Josef Potocki's appearance in the story--but these are easily brushed aside due to the cruel beauty of the fairy tale, which is indisputably the highlight of the novel. The only major problem is this:

Granted, the characters believed Gemma came to the US before the war. But. Are we truly to believe that a Jewish family descended from an Eastern European immigrant never made the connection between the details in Gemma's unique telling of Briar Rose and the Nazis? Big black boots, shiny silver eagles, deadly "mist", and no one but the heroine lives happily ever after, yet none of them picked up on the Nazi references? I can't say it bothered me when I first read this book--I was a child, after all--but in subsequent readings it has jolted me out of the story. It was necessary for the plot to develop in the manner Yolen desired, but I can't help feeling that there are other ways she might have handled it so that this unrealistic device didn't intrude on the story.

Back to the 18th century again! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Another outstanding book by one of the best writers of the History Mystery Books published by American Girl about 10-12 years ago. Great to read further adventures about Felicity Merriman, the AG who lived at the time of the American Revolutionary War. Absorbing story that truly helps to understand history in a meaningful way. Also always enjoy a good mystery. Is being read now by my 35 yr old dghtr, who will then read it to my 5 yr old gr dgtr --this book appeals to 3 generations! Wish MY parents were alive to have read it...

This is one mystery you'll find difficult to put down! 5 out of 5 stars.

The year is 1776. Ten-year-old Felicity "Lissie" Merriman is in good spirits at the thought of her eleventh birthday quickly approaching. While she doesn't expect much for her special day, she can't help but admire the gorgeous copy of GULLIVER'S TRAVELS sitting in Widow Reed's storefront. The book is everything that Felicity could ever want; and she and her best friend, Elizabeth Cole, can't help but stop by the print shop every day just to admire the handiwork displayed in this lovely piece of literature. Felicity would do anything to own such a beautiful book. But when terror strikes the town of Williamsburg, Felicity's selfish thoughts go straight out the window.

Over the years, Fiona McLeod has become one of Felicity's dearest friends. As a Scot, however, Fiona's family is at risk of being named a Loyalist; something that Felicity can't understand. But she's forced to come to terms with it immediately when an unknown source, going by the name of Mr. Puller, begins posting broadsides around Williamsburg, falsely accusing Mr. McLeod of just that. Fiona is terrified, and so is Felicity. But even more so when her very own father decides to stand up for Mr. McLeod in court. Of course Felicity wants to help her friend, but she can't help but think that her very own family may become targets or angry mobs if they defend the McLeod's. Felicity's father, however, thinks nothing of it, and declares that he shall assist Mr. McLeod as much as he possibly can. When Felicity's worst nightmare comes true, however, and Father is accused of helping the British, and being a traitor to the Patriots, Felicity knows that she must do something to help her family's name from being dragged through the mud, and save her Father from the cruelty of their so-called friends and neighbors. But to get to the bottom of the case, Felicity must enlist the help of Ben and Elizabeth, and locate the mysterious Mr. Puller; otherwise her father could be put to trial under false pretenses.

When I was growing up, I more often chose to read the Kirsten and Samantha stories. However, since delving into Elizabeth McDavid Jones' PERIL AT KING'S CREEK, Felicity has earned a soft spot in my heart. And now, as she makes a mysterious return in TRAITOR IN WILLIAMSBURG, I am quickly finding myself drawn more and more to her character, and the era she was from. As with PERIL AT KING'S CREEK, McDavid Jones has, once more, penned a tale that is mysterious, and a little spine-tingling. Felicity is spirited and spunky from the get-go. Her loyalty to her friends and family is admirable; while the bravery she displays at every turn of the tale paints her as a heroine you can't help but adore. The facts about printing presses and newspapers that McDavid Jones sprinkles throughout the story are interesting; while the detective work conducted by Felicity, along with Elizabeth, Ben, and Walter leaves the reader on the edge of their seat. This is one mystery you'll find difficult to put down!

Favorite Folktales from Around the World 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a good, basic collection of stories; you'll be surprised how entertaining they can be! Enjoy.

I adored it. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I teach elementary school, and I originally got this book because I was instructing other teachers on how to incorporate multicultural folklore into their classrooms. However, this book ended up spending most of its time by my bedside. It is SO GOOD. I came across it by accident, but I totally love it, just as much as I love my anthology of original Grimm's fairy tales. If you have any interest in the nuances of folktales, and if you love looking for similarities between cultures, start here. It's amazing.

For an adult reader not for children 3 out of 5 stars.

While this collection is great. I would recommend it for a young adult or adult reader - 15 years and up. It is not for younger children. There are little to no pictures, (a few line drawings) the text size is smaller and the language is not for young readers.

This is a beautiful book. I bought it for my children, who enjoyed it immensely. I also used it in a classroom of first graders. They were delighted with the book, and we all had fun with the illustrations and the story. I think it is a wonderful book, with beautiful illustrations and a great story.

7 Blind Mice 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Ed Young brings simple truths to preschoolders and young children as he retells a favorite story about the Blind Man and the Elephant using 7 blind mice to show that each point of view, just like all the colors of the rainbow, come together to make the "whole" of the elephant and also equals white light, which is what all colors of the rainbow equal. Many teaching moments such as primary colors equal white when combined and looking at things from many points of view brings about a different understanding, can be shared with children as they are able to understand. Enjoy the simple story or the depths of the wonderful ideals illustrated simply and beautifully.

Editorial Review:

"It's a pillar," says one. "It's a fan," says another. One by one, the seven blind mice investigate the strange Something by the pond. And one by one, they come back with a different theory. It's only when the seventh mouse goes out-and explores the whole Something-that the mice see the whole truth. Based on a classic Indian tale, Ed Young's beautifully rendered version is a treasure to enjoy again and again.

"Immensely appealing." (The Horn Book, starred review)
