Great 1st book of poetry 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought the book for my four-year-old great-granddaughter. The poem choices are charming and the illustrations are delightful. I showed "Here's a Little Poem" to neighbors in the senior complex where I live and sold four more copies. Two of the buyers are retired primary teachers; one is a retired librarian; I am a retired Professor of English. We all agree that this is the perfect introduction to poetry for little people.

Editorial Review:

Here's a superb collection of poetry for little ones. More than sixty poems offer a comprehensive introduction to some remarkable poets: from Margaret Wise Brown to Gertrude Stein, Langston Hughes to A.A. Milne. Greeting the morning, enjoying the adventures of the day, cuddling up to a cozy bedtime - these are poems that highlight the moments of a toddler's world from dawn to dusk. Carefully gathered by Jane Yolen and Andrew Fusek Peters and delightfully illustrated by Polly Dunbar, Here's a Little Poem captures a young child's intense delight in the experiences and rituals of every new day.

Useful and effective for certain goals 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This children's book offers several very clear lessons:

1. When you see people with a different skin color, especially people that dress and speak differently, it's OK to mock and ridicule them, because they're not quite human and probably won't understand anyway. It's like making fun of a dog. If you see someone with lighter skin than your own, check to see if they have a tail.

2. It's not enough to make fun of those that are different, however. It is extremely important to drive the sub-humans away by whatever means necessary. Treating them as true humans will only lead you to become less than "truly human" yourself.

3. You should judge people by their skin color, not by their actions. Focus purely on their skin color, language and how they dress, plus any dreams you may have had about them.

Let me be clear - I agree that what was done to native Americans was wrong. If this book taught about that, I would gladly buy it for my children. But this book does NOT argue that the white-skinned sub-humans should have been judged by their actions, or that all people have basic, fundamental rights that should be respected.

The boy in the story is condemning the Spanish based purely on the fact that their skin, clothing and language are different, and argues that they should be driven away for that reason alone (well, plus the boy had a bad dream!). As an old man, he says that his own people are no longer 'true humans', not because of slavery but because they have begun to speak and dress like the sub-humans. People should be judged by their appearance, and those that are different should be exiled to prevent contamination.

The book is beautifully illustrated and written in a way that will be attractive to children. If you're trying to teach your children to be more racist, this book will be a useful and effective tool.

Editorial Review:

When Christopher Columbus landed on the island of San Salvador in 1492, what he discovered were the Taino Indians. Told from a young Taino boy’s point of view, this is a story of how the boy tried to warn his people against welcoming the strangers, who seemed more interested in golden ornaments than friendship. Years later the boy, now an old man, looks back at the destruction of his people and their culture by the colonizers.

A flight of pure fantasy 5 out of 5 stars.

A truly spellbinding book. Yolen has out done herself with her Pit Dragon series. The last book was captivating and your hands will refuse to let you set the book down. The story of Akki and Jakkin continues, along with 5 not so little versions of the beloved Heart's Blood. This is a book for any true Yolen fan and dragon lover! Symbolism and wisdom underlay the breath taking plot which Yolen has written. I personally suggest this to anyone who has a love for fantasy novels, ages young or old.

Not worth hearing about! 1 out of 5 stars.

The first book in this series wasn't that bad. (I guess I just don't like Yolen's style). But then came the second book, which was pathetic. It was like Jane Yolen was struggling to finish the damned series. But oh, no, she didn't stop there. She made a the momma of crappy books. Want some real books? Read the Eric Nylund and William Dietz's Halo series (The Fall of Reach, The Flood, and First Strike). Don't waste your crappy time on reading this book which sucks; big time.

Avoid. Avoid. AVOID! 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I think Jane Yolen made a serious misstep in writing this book. She aimed it for kids, but the world she created would have been perfectly suited for something more adult.

Austar IV is an ugly place filled with criminals set on doing ugly things to themselves and the dragons that they fight in arenas. Most of the descriptions the author paints for us makes you want to wince. Weeds that smoke and burn, hot desert with freezing nights cold enough to kill, dragon scales and tongues that cut and scrape, blood that eats though human flesh like acid.

The character names are annoying to say the least. Jakkin and Akki and any number others characters with multiple K's in their name. It isn't explained until near the end the reason why this is the case, and by the time it came down to it, I had a headache.

Again, I think this would have been a lot better as an adult book because then the author could have elaborated on her dusty dirty world and the sad people that inhabit it. Instead we are given half references to prostitutes and drug addiction that could have been put into a decent plot, but was just left hanging there.

The ending was pretty bad as well. The man Jakkin looks up too pretty much ties up all of the loose ends in the plot with a grandiose explanation. He reminded me of a James Bond villain, explaining his motives right at the end so that the viewer doesn't miss anything. Basically, the end was for a kid's book while the entire plot up until that point was good for adults.

This book was a disappointment after seeing so many good reviews.

Editorial Review:

Dragons are trained to fight to the death, and two determined teens help free them in this spellbinding saga.

Training a dragon to be a fighting champion is the only way to freedom for fifteen-year-old Jakkin.

Hearts Blood 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I think Jane Yolen out did herself and hit a homerun, with Hearts Blood, an extraordinary book. In this vivid storyline, a boy named Jakkin risks his life, his dragon Hearts Blood's life, and his dragons hatchlings life, to save his love Akki. The risk was being involved with the rebels who are against the republic and the republic send people down to the colony to keep everything in order but then the rebels exploded the side of the Major dragon pit called in the city of Rokk. The people from the republic think Akki and Jakkin did it so they flee. Will the republic find them or not, what will happen to Jakkin and Akki? read Hearts Blood to find out. I've read the whole series, and many of her other books such as; Devils Arithmetic, The rest of the Pit Dragon trilogy, Merlin, and Armageddon Summer. Her word choice was great because she uses words that you wouldn't normally know the meaning to, but when she uses them you do; such as, "Myriad of colors", and she is very imaginative in the ways she described the dragons.
I highly recommend this book to all young adults.

Editorial Review:

Jakkin risks everything--his freedom, his dragon, even his life--to rescue his beloved in this stirring sequel to Dragon's Blood.

Disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The on-line description of this book and CD led us to believe that there were many songs on the CD. Unfortunately, there were only a handful. We felt a bit deceived. On the plus side: (1) The book itself has wonderful pictures; (2) The history of each rhyme is interesting to an adult; (3) The descriptions of how to involve a child are very good.

The parents loved it 5 out of 5 stars.

All those songs you remember from childhood, but have no clue what the words are beyond the first three. This is a great way to share time with your child, whether simply soothing them with song or having fun and teaching them music.

A Poetic and Photographic Feast 4 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

Yolen and Stemple have created a visual feast in their, "Color Me A Rhyme." As usual, Jane Yolen's poetry is excellent, but what sold me on the book were the amazing photographic layouts of natural images in green, grey, orange, purple....Each two page spread in the book has a Jane Yolen poem about the featured color, other names for the color (for white: chalk, snow, alabaster and bone), a literary quote about the color, and at least two lovely juxtaposed photos. You have to see the book to really appreciate its gorgeous layouts. This book would be excellent in the early grades, where teaching concepts is emphasized, or when teaching creative writing. Kids could all write their own color poems. I also think young artists would enjoy the varieties of color represented in the volume. How many kids know the varieties of blue? Some of its names are lovely and mysterious--cerulean, sapphire, azure and turquoise. Let them experience these colors in this fine book.

Poems about Colors for teachers 5 out of 5 stars.

I really like this book of poems. The pictures are lovely. Some poems have just a few lines and some poems are longer. The second language students and native English speaking students enjoy these poems.

Long but interesting 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

When I first got this book I expected bamboo, chopsticks, honorable monks and all that other stereotype Chinese stuff. But I saw that life in sixth century China was not that way. The Chinese were beyond bamboo but the Hsien people to the south weren't. The Hsien who lived in Southern China at the time lived a peaceful life in the forests until the jealous Dog Heads (who I think were from India or Vietnam) came and the Chinese help them. The Hsien send their Princess Red Bird to become a liasion and makes a clever plan to defeat the Dog Head Elephants. This Clever Book-loving Princess records in Five Scrolls her life living with her Father the king and then later her brother King Little Tiger who was a royal pain like this other Chinese rich colonist girl who ends up living with Red Bird. But I think lot's of kids who love books can relate to Princess Red Bird. I hope you like it as much as I have.

Editorial Review:

The Royal Diaries proudly presents two-time Newbery Honor author Laurence Yep, whose stunning diary of sixteen-year-old Lady of Ch¹iao Kuo takes readers on a remarkable adventure to Southern China in the sixth century A.D., where Ch¹iao Kuo, a born leader called Red Bird, is courageous and keenly intelligent.

A Chinese fairy tale story. 5 out of 5 stars.
24 of 24 people found this review helpful.

An excellent book on Chinese fairy tales about a Prince/Dragon and a poor, but skilled and beautiful peasant girl. It contains exquisite illustrations that captured my preschool and grade school daughters attention. I highly recommend this fantasy book for preschoolers, through grades three. The reading level and some content (reasoning) for older grades. Recommended for students, teachers, and parents.

The Dragon Prince Review 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is about a prince who can turn into animals and a farmer who had 7 daughters. The third sister is the evil and greedy one and the seventh sister the youngest daughter, was the prettiest. If it wasn't for her weaving fine shoes the family would have died. In the story the prince is trying to find a wife. So he searched everywhere for one.
If you like Beauty And The Beast you will like this book because this is the same only that it is the Chinese version. They also have the same theme which is don't judge a book by its cover. I know this is the message because in both stories they disguise themselves and they are really are princes
This is an awesome book. I recommend it to young readers for it has excitement, romance, adventure, and more. So pick it up at your local library or buy it at a book store. Hope you enjoy.

Editorial Review:

When a poor farmer falls into the clutches of a dragon, only Seven, his youngest daughter, will save him—by marrying the beast.
Publishers Weekly praised "Yep's elegant, carefully crafted storytelling" and Mak's "skillfully and radiantly rendered illustrations" in this captivating and luminous Chinese variation of the beauty and the beast tale.
