The Sticking Together Sisters 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Little Women is a story about four sisters who live with their mother. I thought it was a great story because it is really easy to figure out what they are doing in a jiff. The best part of this book is that it shows the characters have feelings and emotions that are throughtout the whole story. The story explains to me what it was like to live back in the older days. Yet to me this book seems new. If I could say who represents me most,it is Jo. Jo is a great reader and it comes in handy when she meets a boy named Laurie. Laurie is a rich kid who ends up being like family to these sisters. This story really reminds of how life is sometimes. Will you find out what happens to these sisters? Read Little Women and get into the story. I think the best rating for this book is four and a half stars. It needed a little more happiness towards the end. But still take the risk and read Little Women.

Editorial Review:

In picturesque nineteenth-century New England, tomboyish Jo, beautiful Meg, fragile Beth, and romantic Amy come of age while their father is off to war.

Not the Best Copy of a Beautiful Story 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

"Take care my skirt don't trip you up..."
"Don't Meg pull fair?"
"Oh, yes she tries to but she don't love Bethy as I do..."
If you're looking for a copy of Little Women with lots of colorful illustrations don't buy this copy there are none.
If you're looking for a copy with extra information about the author don't buy this one there's only a very short paragraph at the end about Louisa May Alcott that comes after the 15 "book discussion" type questions that are not very useful to an independant reader.
I was not impressed with the wording of this Sterling Publishing edition of this beloved children's classic. I've read other editions of Little Women and don't remember the word don't being used so poorly throughout the novel as it was in this edition. Are these the original words of Louisa May Alcott or don't people know how to use proper English back in the 1860's?

Editorial Review:

The beautiful Meg, artistic tomboy Jo, doomed Beth, and selfish Amy: since the publication of Little Women in 1869, these four sisters have become America’s most beloved literary siblings. Louisa May Alcott’s rich and realistic portrait has inspired three movies and stirred the emotions of countless young girls. Set in New England during the Civil War, the novel follows the adventures of the March sisters as they struggle to pursue their dreams.

7 boys and 1 girl...6 aunts and an uncle... 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

EIGHT COUSINS is definitely on my list of favorite books, though I cannot say I like it quite as much as LITTLE WOMEN or AN OLD FASHIONED GIRL. But it does come close, don't get me wrong. The scenes on the little island out at sea, or in the big houses on the green "Aunt-Hill" near the beach where the whole Campbell clan lives, or in Rose's exotic tropical bedroom, or on the skating pond in the freezing winter, create special feelings in my heart that are as fond memories as if I'd really been there. It's definitely a girly book (that is to say, I doubt boys would like it) because the main character is a 13-year-old orphan girl, Rose, and everything is seen from her feminine perspective. I enjoyed how Louisa May Alcott developed the characters: each of the seven boy cousins is different and likable in his own way, and each of the six aunts (2 great-aunts and 4 aunts) has her own peculiarities and lovable qualities. I especially love Uncle Alec, who is portrayed as Rose's young-at-heart guardian who always has the best ideas and the most healthy fun. It was at first difficult to keep all the characters straight in my mind, since Miss Alcott sometimes just calls the boys by their nicknames and since there are so many families, but I created a "Campbell-family-tree" sort of thing on a little card and referred to it when necessary, which was very helpful. Once I got the family straight, I got attached to each one and was in suspense at the climax when Rose gets to choose whether she wants to keep staying with her uncle or go to live with one of the aunts. This book is a good classic that shows how to keep peaceful family relationships and have healthy, clean fun.

Editorial Review:

Life with seven boy cousins isn't quite what Rose expected. Left an orphan after her father's death, Rose Campbell is sent to live at the "Aunt Hill" with her six aunts and seven rowdy boy cousins. For someone who is used to a girl's boarding school, it all seems pretty overwhelming. Her guardian, Uncle Alec, makes her eat healthy things like oatmeal, and even tries to get her to give up her pretty dresses for drab, sensible clothes. Will Rose ever get used to her uncle's crazy notions and all her noisy relatives? Complete and unabridged.

Disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Mostly I got this book because I never owned it and do own Little Women and Jo's Boys.I want my daughter to have the trilogy.I thought it was terrible.A mere series of goody-goody character sketches with very little holding it all together. If anything, it just underscored how Jo should have accepted Teddy! They were a great pair.I did not care about these boys much and even had trouble distinguishing them from one another.Jo's Boys was much better--at least a novel, so read Little Men only to fill in the blanks.

Poor Publisher 1 out of 5 stars.

I was looking forward to having my own copy of Little Men, but the copy I received from publisher Hard Press had many grammatical and spelling errors. It did not have an appealing layout, either. I should return it for a better copy of the book which I know exist.

Gah. 1 out of 5 stars.

Who else would have liked to see the "hoyden" (read: assertive girl) Nan punch that simpering, girly-girly little twit Bess right in her lisping mouth?

Editorial Review:

The beloved sequel to Little Women, this classic continues the story of Jo March, who goes on to get married and inherit an estate with which she creates an experimental school for boys.

Editorial Review:

Best known for the novels Little Women and Little Men, Louisa May Alcott brought the story of her feisty protagonist Jo and the adventures and misadventures of the March family to an entertaining, surprising, and bittersweet conclusion in Jo’s Boys. Beginning ten years after Little Men, Jo’s Boys revisits Plumfield, the New England school still presided over by Jo and her husband, Professor Bhaer. Jo remains at the center of the tale, surrounded by her boys—including rebellious Dan, sailor Emil, and promising musician Nat—as they experience shipwreck and storm, disappointment and even murder.

Popular for over a century, Alcott’s series still holds universal appeal with its powerful and affectionate depiction of family—the haven where the prodigal can always return, adversity is shared, and our dreams of being cherished, despite our flaws, come true. In this edition of Jo’s Boys, readers once again experience a treasured classic by one of America’s best-loved writers.

Five stars are not enough 5 out of 5 stars.

I read Little Women when I was a Little Woman. I just recently decided to buy it for my daughter and read it again. What a classic! This is a must for anyone's reading list both male and female. The story chronicles the March family, in particular one of the daughters, Josephine March. It is a story of hope and love. This is not a love story of romance, but one of tender, unconditional love that exists in a family of a mother, father and four very different daughters. There are moral lessons throughout the book that are refreshing and the character of all the girls comes through vividly. Alcott does a wonderful job devloping the different personalities of her characters. There are lessons for young people written between the lines on strength, wisdom, love, patience and quiet service. Boys and girls alike will benefit from the examples of polished and refined manners. A beautifully wirtten story that well deserves the label of a Classic.
Just a note about this particular copy--We like to buy classics that are nicely bound and not cheap looking. I was a little hesitant to buy this online. I was pleasantly surprised when it came in the mail. It is nicely bound. The cover is hardcover cloth. The pages are not great quality but are sturdy and seem "old fashioned". It was a great value for the money and as well, looks good on the shelf. I am expecting it to hold up to lots of readings!

You MUST read this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Little Woman is a book that everyone must read. I really love the characters and everything about it! My favorite character is Jo, who seems a lot like me because she loves books and isn't a really girlie girl. I also like Beth because she is so nice. I really recommend reading this book.

Editorial Review:

Following Sterling's spectacularly successful launch of its children's classic novels (240,000 books in print to date),comes a dazzling new series: Classic Starts. The stories are abridged; the quality is complete. Classic Starts treats the world's beloved tales (and children) with the respect they deserve--all at an incomparable price.

Louisa May Alcott's classic novel, set during the Civil War, has always captivated even the most reluctant readers. Little girls, especially, love following the adventures of the four March sisters--Meg, Beth, Amy, and most of all, the tomboy Jo--as they experience the joys and disappointments, tragedies and triumphs, of growing up. This simpler version captures all the charm and warmth of the original.

It Only Gets Better 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If Eight Couisins was great, Rose In Bloom is classic! I left the child-hood friends in great anticipation of meeting them again as adults. At the same time, however, I felt an ominous sense of foreboding. . . Would Charlie and Mac ruin their friendship in vieing for their sweet cousin's hand? I could not imagine Mac striving with anyone over anything. So . . . what then? Would the romantic and debonair Charlie simply sweep Rose off her feet, while Mac stands in the background and sighs with dissapiontment? No. That didn't seem to fit, either. As it turned out, the good and noble Mac did win Rose's heart over his hansome and undiciplined cousin. I - like Rose - first fell in love with "the Prince". And like her, I came to see, through tragic circumstances, what true love really means. . . finding someone you can look up to, instead of lift up.

Editorial Review:

In this sequel to Eight Cousins, Rose Campbell returns to the "Aunt Hill" after two years of traveling around the world. Suddenly, she is surrounded by male admirers. But before she marries anyone, Rose is determined to establish herself as an independent young woman. Besides, she suspects that some of her friends like her more for her money than for herself. How can Rose tell who her real friends are? Is there anyone she can count on?

I bought this book as a gift to impress the receiver. To my shock, the receiver told me the book was very nice indeed but it contained only the first half of the book. I did not see anywhere where we are told about this being only half of the book unless you include the Library Journal description.

This is my favorite book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a librarian and purchased this for our library after reading several of the other books in the 'Whole Story' series. This is a lovely book. It feels good in the hand, has great sidebar photos and info and will draw in old and new fans of the classics--especially Little Women.
