Memories of childhood summers at the beach 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is the story of a family's summer at the beach-house, and their not-so-lazy days on the beach and in the water playing. My two and a half year old loves me to read this book to her. When she was two, our family took a vacation to the beach, and this book captures the essence of our vacation. The book allows us to share our time at the beach and all the new adventures we had all over again.

The book is filled with wonder and excitement. The illustrations perfectly compliment the story, and are colorful and fun. My daughter has asked me to read the book to her dozens of times.

Editorial Review:

A story about sand castles, sunburns and sand-drenched sandwiches in which Aliki recalls a summer holiday spent by the sea.

Annoying, inconsistent with my parenting style 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This book rubbed me the wrong way. The book depicts a mother spoonfeeding her child and cajoling her to eat with a rhyme as she goes. Then in the dramatic climax of the book, the child throws food around and and apparently also vomits. I can't imagine that the author intended the picture to depict vomit. I think she just wanted to evoke the feeling of a big mess. But, the picture shows green material ejecting from the child's mouth, and the last spoonful the child was fed was not green. So where did this green stuff come from? The apron clad mother happily cleans up the mess, and with a huge smile goes back to shoveling food in.

Aside from unstimulating in it's own right, I found that this book clashes with my parenting style. I try to avoid pressuring and cajoling my son to eat. He knows when he has had enough. I also believe in allowing a child to self-feed as early as possible. The child in the book was walking already, and thus should have been capable of happily feeding herself with her hands and experimenting with a spoon (That would make a much more interesting book).

Both the passive (or passive aggressive?) baby and the servile mom depicted in this book are models that I don't wish to reinforce for my child.

One Little Spoonful

Your 1-year-old enjoys playing games and sharing rhymes with you.

Tips for reading and sharing:

  • Repeat the words of this rhyming game as you feed your child
  • Touch your child's nose, toes, fingers, etc. as they are mentioned
  • Encourage your child to name the body parts and point to them, too

Used to being Late! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was one of my favorite books as a child. I still have my ragged and worn copy - my mom fixed the binding at least a dozen times. It's the story of two kittens, Edward and Elizabeth, who are always late for school, one morning when they hurry to school, no one is there! They decide to go home because there must not be school today, but is that really true? The illustrations are full of awesome details, like a Charmin toilet paper tube in a mouse's cage, prices on toys in a shop window, names on drawings by students at school, and a policecat ticketing a car in front of a "No Parking Sign". I remember when my mom and I would sit on the couch looking for details we hadn't yet seen. The book also has a subtle way of reinforcing learning to tell time. A great book to read with a small child you know!

Simple, beautiful book to read again and again 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My 15 month old loves this book, and I think I know why. The illustrations by Aliki depicting a day in a cotton field are simple but bold and full of character. The text is nothing short of poetry, and reminds one of a traditional spiritual song. For older children, there is a lot of content that can be discussed along with enjoying the song-like text: child labor, racism, stereotypes, history. Because of the repetitive text, it is a good book for children learning to read.
My daughter asks for this one again and again since the day we came across it by accident, and I think we will continue to enjoy it for many years.

    Editorial Review:

    Bargain Books are non-returnable.

From dawn to dusk, a little girl harvests cotton in the sweltering Mississippi Delta heat. Imagining her way through the endless day, she wishes she could be anyone else from a snake curled up and cool to a buzzard going round and round in the sky. Finally, sunset approaches, and a special treat awaits. Based on a sharecropper's childhood memories, Polly Greenberg's rhythmic text and Aliki's sun-soaked illustrations make an unforgettable tale just right for the youngest reader.

    Editorial Review:

In colors as rich and varied as an antique quilt, Aliki illustrates a favorite folk song with freshness and charm, depicting early American life in authentic detail. The familiar story of the old gray goose and her unusual demise is both poignant and funny as the gander weeps and the goslings mourn, but the children run to tell Aunt Rhody. Full color.

A Family Favorite 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I kept having to go back to the library every time one of my daughters was sick to get this book, and now I've found it to have in our own book shelf! The kids like the sibling envy and the funny way it's resolved, as well as the very realistic portayal of how a sick child feels. We parents love the tounge-in-cheek details in the drawings that the kids miss but we laugh at every time. One of our family's all-time favorites!

i wish i was sick too 4 out of 5 stars.

Oh don't we all as kids make that wish.... 4 out of 5 stars.

I read this book a lot as a kid. What kid does not wish to be sick themselves when brother or sister get all the attention.
Such a precious little book, and easy to read- any young child will love it. The illustrations by Aliki are interesting too.

    Editorial Review:
