Tabby is a wonderful "learning to read" book. 5 out of 5 stars.

We first became acquainted with Tabby when we checked out the book from the library. My daughter (three years old) wanted me to read it to her every day, at least two or three times a day. Soon, she was telling me the story herself, as she "read" the pictures. Tabby is an excellent learning book for pre-readers.

Super Aliki Book 5 out of 5 stars.

We discovered this book at the library and were lucky enough to find a used copy to purchase. My two year old son loves this book and requests it frequently. It's our favorite Aliki book. Great illustrations and a good story about growing up in a growing family.

Cute! 5 out of 5 stars.

I can't figurte out who this book is supposed to be for, but my daughter (who loves cute things) is just not having it. Maybe it's not for 3 or 4 year old girls.

Editorial Review:

Tabby the kitten has a brand new home, a warm bed, good food to eat, and best of all, a little girl to play with. The pictures tell the story in this charming, full-color book, so even the youngest reader can be enchanted by Aliki's affectionate look at kitten's first year with her new family.

A childhood favorite! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was a favorite of mine as a little girl, and it stands the test of time! The drawings are absolutely adorable and sweet, as are all of Aliki's books. The story is also cute. Besides Mary Bloom and her neighbor, the little girl, all the characters are animals, making their assorted sound. This book would be wonderful for a young new reader. It is absolutely a crime that this book is out of print!!!

CHILDREN'S LITERATURE AT ITS BEST 5 out of 5 stars.

This is another of those works that is currently out of print which is an absolute shame as it is far, far superior to many of the books currently in publication for this age level. Written and published in 1976, it was a favorite for several years, in particular with little girls. My daughter still uses it in her first grade class room and it is one of the children's favorites.

The story is simple; a little girl's pet mouse has just had babies! "I'll go tell Mary Bloom. But if I do, I know what will happen," says the little girl. The story then goes in to a repetitive sequence of what will happen at Mary Bloom's house, starting with the baby will cry, the dogs will bark, the cat will escape, the owl will shiver, the skink will shake, the magpie will call, the monkey will shriek and on it goes through the entire menagerie which is Mary Bloom's house. I guess I can identify with this book as it sounds much like our house when our children were wee ones.

This is a great first reader. The wording is simple and each word is repeated several times. The illustrations are perfect. They are simple yet convey so much meaning and are simply...well cute! This is a wonderful read aloud book for a group of children and they do not seem to tire of it with repetitive readings. With the exception of a picture of a dial type phone in a couple of the pictures, the book is rather timeless and difficult to date which makes it all the better.

This is one of those you need to dig out of the library or used book store and offer your little ones. As I said, it is a shame this work is no longer in print and we are going to end up loosing another good one.

The Many Lives of Benjamin Franklin 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This was a simple overview of Benjamin Franklin's life and his contributions to the United States. When Ben was born in Boston, his parents knew he was special because he was curious, had a sense of humor, and read a lot. He always tried different ways of doing things such as making paddles to swim faster and holding onto a kite while he swam so it could pull him. Ben was sent to live with his brother, James. James was a printer, so Ben wanted to learn to print also. Ben wrote letters for the newspaper without his brother's permission. When James discovered Ben's dishonesty, Ben decided to move to Philadelphia. Benjamin worked hard at printing until finally he bought his own shop. Benjamin married and had two children. His contributions to Philadelphia are tremendous, such as starting a reading club called Junto, starting the first free library, fire department, hospital and school, and even proved that lightning was electricity. Before Benjamin Franklin died at age 84, he helped free America through signing the Declaration of Independence and writing the Constitution of the United States.

Editorial Review:

A simple biography of Benjamin Franklin emphasizing his contributions to American literature, politics, and science.

Being a sibling of an identical twin there is often a struggle for individuality. This book portrays the lives of identical twin brothers. It teaches children that just because twins may look alike, they are two seperate individuals who often have opposite interests.A must read for any child with an identical twin.

A Nice Little Book -- a Review of Aliki's "Hush Little Baby" 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I borrowed this from the Library and it is a nice little book that my children have really enjoyed --boy and girl; 3 and 5.

[Note: the book we have borrowed is hardback, a 1986 edition by Simon and Schuster. This paperback was printed by Aladdin.]

The illustrations that accompany the classic text are colonial and folksy in feel, having a slightly aged patina. And it is the 'colonial' aspects of the pictures that my children found the most interesting. There is an old highchair depicted, as well as old style toys and carts (a toy bull with wheels for example).

Four stars. A nice little book that has features of interest.

Nice but not my favorite 4 out of 5 stars.

We borrowed 3 books about this song from the library to compare. It does have nice pictures, but I decided that the child looked a little spoiled in the pictures (of course, the song implies being spoiled too! ;) ). This version is about "Papa" buying all the items, but it only shows Papa on the first few pages, and then it's just the child with the defective gifts & a new one appearing on the scene each time. It is a nice book -- I'm just being critical, because I was trying to choose between 3 options. :)

Editorial Review:

/Aliki/ "Manners are the way people behave. Manners are the way you treat others. Good manners make you nice. They make others want to be with you. Read this book and find out all about manners". The creator of Feelings knows just how to explain important matters without being didactic, and she makes good manners make.
