clumsy translations / great stories 1 out of 5 stars.

There are many better translations out there, so there is no excuse to produce something that reads badly. I was disappointed and bought another edition. Mine is being resold on Amazon. I hate these bogus "classics."

The Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales, Deluxe Edition (Literary Classics) 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Excellent edition, however I had hoped to receive one with colour plates rather than the black and white plates. This was my only disappointment. The book was luxuriously bound and beautifully put together. All the stories are there, and it is funny how ones memories can play tricks as I thought the description in the story The Tinder Box described one of the dogs as having 'eyes like saucers' when the book texted 'eyes like teacups' or 'eyes like towers'. I am in no position to argue, but the story still remains magical.

Worth having this in any serious book collection, but as the pages are quite fragile I would suggest avoiding letting children having free run of this in case it gets damaged, perhaps until they are at least about 8 with advanced reading capabilities.

Why would you inflict this book on a child at Christmas? 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The art in this book is truly beautiful and does an excellent job of conveying the sad, joyless life the Little Match Girl has versus the warm, colorful life of those around her.

But this book is really not appropriate for a young child. We received it for Christmas for our 4-year-old daughter. She won't read it until she is old enough to find it in the library catalog all by herself, if I can help it.

I read over some of the other comments about how this is the saddest Christmas book they have ever read, and how important it is to expose our children to the importance of empathy and action for people in need. I agree that these are very important morals to teach our children - but maybe you should try action (soup kitchens, food pantries, adopt-a-family) instead of making your child sob right before bed.

Hans Christian Anderson is an amazing writer and I look forward to introducting my child to his stories (unadulterated by Disney) - but when she is a tween and can handle learning about Anderson's milleau and how that influenced his writing.

This book is especially inappropriate for non-religious families. I am an atheist and found the "child finds comfort in arms of grandmother as she dies and is scooped into heaven" message to make this story even sadder.

Your mileage may vary. At the very least, I recommend upping the age range to 7-8 years old.

Editorial Review:

Fearful of returning home to a violent father without having sold enough matches for the day, the Little Match Girl remains on the street resigned to warming herself by lighting matches. With each match, she sees a vision—a warm stove, a table laden with hot food, a beautiful Christmas tree decorated with lights leading up to the sky, so high that one becomes a shooting star. According to her grandmother, each shooting star is a person who had recently passed on and is now heading to heaven. Her next strike brings a vision of her grandmother—the only person in the world who ever loved the Little Match Girl—who takes her away in her warm embrace to heaven. The classic ending is intact here and accompanied by gentle, sensitive illustrations—children will return to this stirring tale often to understand its tragedy and the valuable lessons within.

Flawless execution of timeless classics 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I don't know what I can add, really.

I bought this book based on reviews already posted, having compared it to about a dozen other Aesop's Fables compilations available on Amazon. This one stood out far and above the competition in the reviews, and it did not disappoint. From the binding, the paper, printing quality, to the actual format and selection of artwork (including a lot of familiar images from the edition of Aesop's I had as a child thirty-five years go), top-notch all the way.

Basically, all those other glowing reviews? Spot on.

Classic illustration and very wonderful coloring 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a good book to have for the children's library or your own library. The illustrations brought back memories of my youth when I would sit down in the library and open an old musty book of Alice in Wonderland. I liked to admire all the fine line detailing the artist would apply to a single illustration. This edition was done using modern artists using that old style and I fell they managed to emmulate the classic style very well.

Editorial Review:

This delightful selection of Aesop's parables--some of them universally recognizable, others refreshignly unfamiliar--is magnificently complemented by illustrations taken from a variety of antique editions.

Editorial Review:

A richly entertaining and informative collection of Hans Christian Andersen's stories, annotated by one of America's leading folklore scholars.

In her most ambitious annotated work to date, Maria Tatar celebrates the stories told by Denmark's "perfect wizard" and re-envisions Hans Christian Andersen as a writer who casts his spell on both children and adults. Andersen's most beloved tales, such as "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Ugly Duckling," and "The Little Mermaid," are now joined by "The Shadow" and "Story of a Mother," mature stories that reveal his literary range and depth. Tatar captures the tales' unrivaled dramatic and visual power, showing exactly how Andersen became one of the world's ten most translated authors, along with Shakespeare, Dickens, and Marx. Lushly illustrated with more than one hundred fifty rare images, many in full color, by artists such as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, The Annotated Hans Christian Andersen will captivate readers with annotations that explore the rich social and cultural dimensions of the nineteenth century and construct a compelling portrait of a writer whose stories still fascinate us today. 146 illustrations including color.

The Ugly Duckling. The Little Mermaid. It's all here! 4 out of 5 stars.

The Ugly Duckling. The Little Mermaid. The Tinderbox. The Emperor's New Clothes. The Princess and the Pea. It's all here!

C. S. Lewis, in his preface to "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," observed that as children we grow out of hearing fairy tales, but as an adult we can come back to them with fresh eyes and be enchanted in a different way. HCA stories have that amphibian quality of living above and below the supposed age limits.

I find it surprising that HCA writing in a minor language would be so popular, but he is a genius at writing fairy tales. The Grimm Boys just collected and edited the German fairy tales, but HCA was generating new and original fairy tales. I hope we don't sluff off this unique talent he had solely on the ground that he was writing to children. After all, how many naked Emperors have we seen? The comic Dilbert gets it's life blood from the fact that so many emperors can be smooth-talked by so many charlatans, and be sustained in their delusion by smarmy sycophants, and only brought to light by a child.

If children can understand this, why can't we adults?

On the printing-side of the book, I would like to see this in a hardbound, with durable paper, and not the thin and fragile newsprint. I am almost afraid to read this book since the opaper is so delicate!

Destined to be a Collectors Item 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A superb collection of nine favorite H.C.A. stories (see below), wonderously illustrated with something like a hundred hig-quality reproductions, at least half of which are full-page, drawn from the work of twenty of the greatest artists from the "Golden Age" of children's book illustration (around the turn of the century). The art is simply mind-blowingly beautiful.

The tellings themselves are very fine. The language used is both delightful and sophisticated, making this a fine volume to entertain good readers amongst older children, and to expand their language skills. Of course, less able readers and younger children might like the stories just as well if they were read to them. There is no information in the book or on the publishers website regarding the origins of these particular tellings.

A sample paragraph, from "Thumbelina":

"Then they came to the warm lands. The sun was shining much more brightly, the sky was twice as high, and the most wonderful green and black grapes were growing by the roadside and on fences. Lemons and oranges hung in the forests, and there was a scent of myrtle and curled mint, and pretty children were running by the roadside playing with big colorful butterflies. But the swallow flew still further, and everything became even more beautiful. There, beneath magnificent green trees by a blue lake, stood a shining white palace, with vines climbing up it's lofty pillars. At the top were lots of swallows' nests, and the swallow carrying Thumbelina lived in one of them."

This collection contains the following stories:

The Emperor's New Clothes The Little Mermaid The Little Match Girl The Nightingale The Princess and the Pea The Steadfast Tin Soldier Thumbelina The Tinderbox The Ugly Duckling

The compilers, Russell Ash and Bernard Higton, must be very proud of the beautiful object they have produced. The publisher, Cronicle Books, deserves praise and support.

This book is a must, either for the child's library or the collectors shelf.

Editorial Review:

A collection of fairy tales by the well-known and beloved writer features such popular tales as "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Little Mermaid," and "Thumbelina," as well as paintings by turn-of-the-century artists.

A BEAUTIFUL TREASURY OF MAGICAL STORIES! 5 out of 5 stars.
46 of 46 people found this review helpful.

I have grown up loving fairy tales, and I collect books of fairy tales. I happened to be at [the store] one day, sometime before Christmas, and I noticed Christian Birmingham's book of Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol". I looked at it for a while, surprised that I haven't seen any of this illustrator's previous work. I continued to look around and I found "The Classic Treasury Of Hans Christian Andersen". I looked at it, and was amazed at how magical and beautiful the illustrations were. All of the illustrations in this book capture the timeless fairy tales of Andersen perfectly. I was once again reunited with some of the stories I grew up loving like "The Little Mermaid", "The Little Match Girl", among others.
The luminous illustrations complement the black and white drawings so that it's just the right amount of artwork to capture pivotal scenes from the stories without overdoing it. I love the color illustrations of Thumblina flying through the air with her bird friend, the black and white drawing of the Little Mermaid saving the prince from drowning, the color illustration of the nightingale signing on the branch of blossoms as the captivated people watch it, and the black and white drawing of the Little Match Girl being taken to Heaven by her Grandmother. These are truly beautiful stories brought to life by an outstanding illustrator. Although you would expect all fairy tales to have perfectly happy endings, many of Andersen's do not. It is up to the reader to decide if the endings are happy or not. I would say they are bittersweet, but beautiful just the same. Anyone who is looking for an excellent book of these stories, or just for a good picture book, I HIGHLY recommend this!!!

Editorial Review:

Award-winning English illustrator Christian Birmingham--one of the rising stars of children's illustration--brings eight time-honored fairy tales to life in dazzling, full-color artwork for this charming collection. Sure to become a treasured part of any childhood library, this sumptuously illustrated book includes the read-aloud favorites The Ugly Duckling, Thumbelina, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Little Match Girl, The Little Mermaid, The Nightingale, and The Princess and the Pea.

Honk! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 10 people found this review helpful.

"The Ugly Duckling" is one of those rare examples of the triumph of image over story. Anyone who's ever read, heard, or seen performed this story knows that there are elements to it that can make you feel a hair uncomfortable. After all, the moral of the tale is that it doesn't matter how awful your life has been just so long as you're beautiful and look like all the pretty people in the end. Even if we dislike what "The Ugly Duckling" is trying to say, though, it's hard not to be compelled by its striking images. The cygnet amongst the ducklings. The resentment directed at him by both the animal kingdom and humankind. And then, the slow realization that he is in fact the most beautiful creature in the entire world. If this story were a Grimm Brothers tale it would probably end with the duckling rubbing his newfound good looks in his siblings' faces. Fortunately, we're in Hans Christian Andersen territory here, and (more specifically) Jerry Pinkney territory as well. Mr. Pinkney has taken Andersen's original wordy version and pared it down to the point where contemporary children will understand and identify with it better. He's even changed the moral of the tale oh-so-slightly so that it's less lotsa-pain-equals-more-physical-beauty and more hard-work-will-lead-to-happiness-in-the-end. I'm not personally buying it, but that's the fault of Andersen. Not Pinkney.

In case you are not familiar with the original Andersen version (and isn't it remarkable that there isn't a Disney version out there somewhere?) here's the lowdown. One day a mother duck finds that one of her eggs is different from the others. No explanation of this is ever given. Pity. When the eggs hatch the largest/different one takes a long time to crack open and when it does it exhibits a large ugly grey "duckling". Immediately, trouble starts. Other ducks bite the duckling's head and its brothers and sisters join in. It gets so depressed that when a dog passes it over as a meal it can only think, "I am too ugly even for a dog to eat". A woman, a cat, and a chicken all find the duckling to be utterly useless. It freezes in a pond and flees the nice man that frees it. Finally after multiple trials and countless tribulations the duckling turns into a swan, meets up with its brethren, and discovers the beauty of ... um... beauty.

No deep insights in this one. Now normally I don't much care for Jerry Pinkney's illustrations. I found his "John Henry" to be a bit slapdash and his "Noah's Ark" lacking. For some reason though, "The Ugly Duckling" works. When you consider that I don't usually like the story and I don't usually like the illustrator, the fact that I like the two when combined is just plum weird. It's not that the story has improved much. But under Pinkney's hand it becomes tolerable. Sure, it's still mighty depressing to see the poor little duckling bitten, screamed at, and teased. But when he's beautiful, there's no arguing with his looks.

In the end, I tip my hat to Pinkney's guts. Some people will pooh-pooh this review because they feel I'm criticizing the story and not the edition itself. Blarney. You can't separate this book from the tale on which it's based. I'm still not a fan of "The Ugly Duckling". I think it teaches the wrong lessons in a clumsy way. But Jerry Pinkney has given us perhaps the only edition of the original story that's readable in this day and age. For that reason alone the book deserves its Caldecott Honor.

Editorial Review:

For over one hundred years The Ugly Duckling has been a childhood favorite, and Jerry Pinkney's spectacular new adaptation brings it triumphantly to new generations of readers. With keen emotion and fresh vision, the acclaimed artist captures the essence of the tale's timeless appeal: The journey of the awkward little bird -- marching bravely through hecklers, hunters, and cruel seasons --- is an unforgettable survival story; this blooming into a graceful swan is a reminder of the patience often necessary to discover true happiness. Splendid watercolors set in the lush countryside bring drama to life.

Beautiful Illustrations! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is in reference to the version illustrated by D. Duntzee--some of the reviews here were a little confusing on that point. This version is the time-honored story by H. C. Andersen which I grew up hearing. The illustrations are really lovely and my two little girls just adore this book. If you have a library of classic children's stories, you should add this book to it--it's wonderful!

Empty retelling of Hans Christian Andersen tale 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

"The Princess and the Pea" by Janet Stevens is the retelling of the famous Hans Christian Andersen tale. This time, we get beautiful pictures, reminiscent of Maurice Sendak, and a bland story.

The typeface is an uninspired black Times New Roman, placed unimaginatively at the bottom of each page.

The Plot:
A prince wanted to test his beloved to see if she were a real princess. His mother demanded that the prince be sure. Each time the prince met someone he fell in love, she failed the test. One could not play soft music, another ate like a pig, and still another could not dance.

When a rainstorm brought in a young tiger who claimed to be a princess, the queen decided to lay out 20 mattresses with a pea beneath them all. Would the young tiger sense the pea and prove she was a real princess?

The story is all there. The problem is that there is nothing exciting in the language. There is no alliteration or assonance, and no word play. The writer goes through the motion of storytelling without ever bringing the story from her heart into the child's.

Better retellings are out there, and the illustrations, as good as they are, are not so much as to make the book a worthy purchase.
