One thing that went wrong 4 out of 5 stars.

(on behalf of my 6 year old son). I like this book because nothing went wrong except one thing, and it was when bear said, "Hello" but it echoed. I recommend this book because it is a pretty good beginner book.

Brings Back Memories!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the best book ever... My mother used to read this book to me at bedtime every night and I loved it so much. It was also one of the first books I learned to read on my own. It is great that I could find it on here. I gave the one I had when I was little to my nephew. I am going to purchase this one for myself and for the friends of mine who already have children...This will definitely be on my childrens' shelves when I plan to start a family. A Great and simple read that teaches children to appreciate the little things..
Thanks for reading...

A delightful game of "hide and seek" 4 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Little Bird teaches Bear how to play "hide and seek," complete with covering his eyes, counting to ten, and, most importantly, taking turns. Later, when Little Bird is not around, Bear asks the moon to play. When it's Bear's turn to count, the moon "hides" behind a cloud. But when Bear can't find the moon, he first enlists the help of Little Bird, then all of the animals in the forest to help search for the moon.

This delightful book teaches toddlers and preschoolers several important lessons. First, they learn the rules of hide and seek, a quintessential childhood game. They can count to ten along with Bear and practice taking turns. And they learn the importance of cooperation and asking for help when you need it. Many books for children attempt to teach such life lessons in heavy-handed ways, but this one maintains its gentle tone throughout.

Hide-and-seek bedtime story 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book tells the story of a young bear who learns to play hide-and-seek from his friend the bird. He spends all day taking turns hiding or counting to 10 before searching for his friend. At night he decides to play the same game with the moon. The natural world of the moon and the clouds astounds him. The animals of the forest come out and help. The book is charming, and a good short read before bed, with about 700 words.

During a game of hide-and-seek, Moon hides behind a cloud, leaving his friend Bear very worried.

Mooncake 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Although some of the concepts may be difficult for young ones to grasp (hibernation, space travel, etc.), the easy reading, simple characters and delightful pictures make this a wonderful addition to a children's library. The story is subtle in what it is trying to teach as it doesn't overtly mention all of the seasons and doesn't explain hibernation. It doesn't need to and doing so would take away from the story. It presents a wonderful opportunity for parents to teach their children more on their own. Besides that, it is one I am asked to read over and over again by my 2 year old.

Not As 'Accessible' to Small Kids as Other Frank Asch Books 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Okay, perhaps I am being a little hyper-critical but to me this particular Frank Asch book is not as child-friendly as his other books.

Certainly the artwork is wonderful and the characters are warm and familiar, but the concepts within the story seem too advanced for toddlers and even preschoolers.

Two examples would be space travel and hibernation. The idea of traveling by rocket and that fact that the moon is *very far* away is not all that understandable to most small children (at least not to mine who are 3 and 5). Mine can't even comprehend why we can't drive to Florida to visit relatives *today*.

Also, my children were clueless as to a) what a rocket was and b) what it could do, even with my explanation.

Then there is the notion of `hibernation'. While this exact word does not appear in the text, the author does say that "... instead of climbing into bed and sleeping through the winter, he kept right on working". My 5 year-old grasps the significance of bear's action, but I am sure my 3-year-old doesn't.

Three Stars. Nice story. Attractively illustrated. However, this Frank Asch books fails to win top points because there are concepts in this book that ruin the story for many young children because they 'just don't get it'.

Editorial Review:

Bear builds a rocket to take him to the moon so he can taste it.

A Cute Thought Provoking Story - a review of "Moonbear's Shadow" 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a very nice book in which Moonbear explores how light and objects make shadows. [Thus story and science combined - wahoo!]

In this book, Moonbear is going fishing and finds himself vexed and perplexed by his shadow. At first it just gets in the way by scaring the fish; but at the end of the day his shadow ends up 'catching a fish' (shadow fish) just like he does.

In between, Moonbear tries various experiments and learns a great deal about light and shadows. You can't for example nail a shadow to the ground, nor bury it, nor can you get away from them by climbing a large rock if the sun is behind you. You can go inside your house, but chances are that when you come out again, that you will find your shadow, or vice-versa.

There is a nice sequence of pictures that depicts how the movement of the sun makes the shadows of stationary objects move.

Four Stars. Good story. Good read-aloud which is no doubt why Frank Asch has been on the my daughters entering -kindergarten and -first grade reading lists. With older children you can talk about shadows and the nature of visual optics (light).

Amazon has this book listed as good for babies to preschoolers; but I think older children would enjoy it too. [My daughter and son are 6 and 4 years of age respectively; and they enjoyed it.]

Journal # 3 of the Cardboard Genius finds Alex Archer's powers of invention tested once again. His intergalactic spaceship, Star Jumper, is ready for deep space travel, but his co-pilot Zoe Breen finds a glitch: When Star Jumper returns from her voyage, more than fifty years will have passed on earth! It's time for Alex to invent a time machine. Its first live subject will be Alex's little brother, Jonathan! The imp's been cooperative since Alex promised he could come on the voyage -- a promise Alex has every intention of breaking. Time travel proves to be full of serious mishaps -- one of which threatens the very existence of the universe! And little Jonathan proves that he's learned a thing or two from his older brother and invents a time-bending device of his own. But once time is twisted, will the Cardboard Genius be able to twist it back?

What a Good Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Frank Asch was on my entering kindergartners Summer Reading List (they simply stated "anything by this author") and to tell you the truth we were not familiar with his work.

Boy were we missing out. We love his stories. They are simple and sweet and really manage to spark a child's imagination.

The other reviewers' have done an excellent job outlining the story, so all I will add is that our household was captivated by this book. We go around finding things that we do "just like daddy".

Lots of fun and a good read.

boys book club choice 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am a teacher who thought my boys book club for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders would like "Star Jumper". They loved the book from page 1, even the boys who are usually reluctant readers!!! Their parents commented on how eagerly their children read this book. By the way, we were inspired to build our own cardboard spaceship. A real winner!!

Editorial Review:

Self-proclaimed genius inventor Alex is convinced that his little brother Jonathan is evil. The kid never shuts up. He's a klutz, and he drools on his pillow when he sleeps. Jonathan's specialty, though, is sticking to Alex like glue -- and sticking his nose into his big brother's business. That's why Alex has to leave Planet Earth and fly so far away that no one will ever be able to find him. Using cardboard, duct tape, old odds and ends and his amazing scientific imagination, Alex builds Star Jumper, a spaceship that will deliver him from his rotten little brother forever! It's a plan only a cardboard genius could ever hope to pull off. But Jonathan has other ideas -- and a secret that ultimately brings forth Alex's most brilliant creation ever!

dealing with a common fear 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

in Frank Asch's _Milk and Cookies_ the author introduces the common childhood fears of monsters, and presents a story which helps children overcome that fear.

Mama, Papa, and baby bear are visiting at Grandma and Grampa's house. They spend the night. Baby bear looks through the cellar door to see Grampa feeding "a dragon" in the cellar, which is actually a wood stove. Later baby bear has a dream of a dragon coming upstairs, which eats all his milk and cookies. Crying baby bear is then taken downstairs by his father to see "the dragon." After that, baby bear is no longer scared; he and his grandparents and parents all eat milk and cookies.

My 3-year old son loves this book. He sympathizes with baby bear, and he loves the way the story is resolved, of course. I'd recommend this, as well as Frank Asch's book _Goodbye, House_ as excellent books for children aged 3.

Editorial Review:

In Alex Archer's previous journal, Star Jumper, he described how his brilliant cardboard invention was tragically destroyed during a pillow fight with his little brother Jonathan. Alex knows that all geniuses encounter a setback now and then -- it just spurs them on to greater achievements. And his totally rebuilt cardboard intergalactic spaceship is certainly an improvement. There's just one ongoing problem: pesky Jonathan. He's still doing his best to disrupt his big brother's every brilliant moment. But nothing can stop the cardboard genius now. His latest invention, the Anti-Gravitron, is finally ready. Soon, Alex will be able to master gravity and make it do anything he wants! It's the crowning touch to his cardboard masterpiece of a spaceship. He and his new copilot, Zoe Breen, are about to say hello to Jupiter -- and goodbye to rotten Jonathan! Or so Alex thinks ...
