Editorial Review:

Genre-jumping author Avi clocks in here with his 50th book, Crispin: The Cross of Lead, an action-packed historical narrative that follows the frantic flight of a 13-year-old peasant boy across 14th-century England.

After being declared a "wolf's head" by his manor's corrupt steward for a crime he didn't commit (meaning that anyone can kill him like a common animal--and collect a reward), this timid boy has to flee a tiny village that's the only world he's ever known. But before our protagonist escapes, Avi makes sure that we're thoroughly briefed on the injustices of feudalism--the countless taxes cottars must pay, the constant violence, the inability of a flawed church to protect its parishioners, etc. Avi then folds in the book's central mystery just as the boy is leaving: "Asta's son," as he's always been known, learns from the village priest that his Christian name is Crispin, and that his parents' origins--and fates--might be more perplexing than he ever imagined.

Providing plenty of period detail (appropriately gratuitous for the age group) and plenty of chase-scene suspense, Avi tells a good story, develops a couple of fairly compelling characters, and even manages to teach a little history lesson. (Fortunately, kids won't realize that they're learning about England's peasant revolt of 1381 until it's far too late.) (Ages 10 to 14) --Paul Hughes

A Review by Third Graders From Spiritridge Elementary 5 out of 5 stars.

Do you want to read an adventurous, dangerous story that will keep you on your toes? Well, Poppy, by Avi is the the book for you! This story is about a family of mice that live near a forest. The main character is an adventurous mouse named Poppy. She has a BIG job to do! You see, her family is running out of food and Poppy must ask Mr. Ocax (the vicious, ruling owl of the forest) for permission to move. This turns into a harder job than she ever thought it would be. She has many dangerous adventures along the way.

All of us here liked this story because it has lots of adventure! There are some talking animals, dangerous predators, and even some fighting scenes!

This story would be perfect for people that have read other books in this series by Avi. This is only one of many awesome books! We hope you get the chance to check them out!

Editorial Review:

King of the Night

At the very edge of Dimwood Forest stood an old charred oak where, silhouetted by the moon, a great horned owl sat waiting. The owls name was Mr. Ocax, and he looked like death himself. With his piercing gaze, he surveyed the lands he called his own, watching for the creatures he considered his subjects. Not one of them ever dared to cross his path. . .until the terrible night when two little mice went dancing in the moonlight. . .

Read it, why not? 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is an ok book. If you are interested in a short book with a sweet little story, this is the book. There isn't much action, and the action that there actually is, is very little. I would recomend this book for a fifth grade book report. This book isn't very interesting, but it's cute. In a lot of the chapters is the same thing over and over again. Read it, why not?

All the qualities of its main character - sweet, charming, unpretentious and smart. 5 out of 5 stars.

Ida Bidson attends school in a one-room schoolhouse in 1925 Colorado. One day, her teacher is called away to take care of her sick mother. Since it is late in the year, the school board agrees to close the school and allow the children to take up their studies the next year if they find a new teacher. But Ida doesn't want to wait a year. She is in eighth grade and wants to go on to high school. She has dreams of being a teacher and they are about to come true (sooner than she thinks!)

When her friend Tom suggests that she be the teacher, Ida thinks it might be a good idea but the school board can't know. It's a big decision though and she takes it very seriously. When the students agree that they will keep the departure of their teacher a secret and that they will keep attending school if Ida teaches, Ida decides that she will do it.

Ida takes all her responsibilities seriously and becomes a very good teacher. But she still has to work on the farm AND she has her own exam to study for. It becomes bit overwhelming and it becomes increasingly difficult for her to keep up with it all. Will Ida's secret school stay a secret? Will the students learn enough from Ida to progress to the next grade? Will the school close permanently if Ida is not successful? It's a lot of pressure on one 14-year-old but if anyone can handle it, Ida can.

I highly recommend this book to girls. Ida is a fantastic role model for persistence and having faith in one's convictions. Yet this is not just "girl book". Boys can learn a thing or two from the character of Ida. They might even find a bit of themselves in Tom Kohl, Herbert Bixler or Ida's brother Felix.

This is no thrill ride or huge suspense story. But it has real value nonetheless. It is sweet and charming, unpretentious - much like its main character. Avi describes each landscape and each conversation superbly yet with an economy of words. Like Avi's other works, this book not only teaches us about the characters and the time they live in, it also teaches us something about ourselves and basic human nature. I enjoyed this book.

Editorial Review:

More than anything, Ida Bidson wants to become a teacher. To do that, she must finish eighth grade, then go on to high school. But her dream falters when the one-room school in her remote Colorado town shuts down. Her only hope is to keep the school open without anyone finding out. Yet even a secret school needs a teacher. Ida can't be it. . . . Or can she?
In the spirit of The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Newbery Medal winner Avi creates an inspiring story of a headstrong girl determined to control her own destiny.

In BEST SHORTS, you never know what surprise you're going to get next. Unlike many short story collections, which usually revolve around some thread of a theme, the stories Avi selected for this anthology come from all over the genre spectrum. The one thing they all have in common, however, is that they are all great little adventures you can experience without the big time commitment of an entire novel.

Readers can get freaked out by seeing what happens when Dad loses his cell phone at Auntie's funeral, travel along with some city-smart boys who try to camp out alone, and root for an entire bank who adopts a baby abandoned in the night-deposit box.

It's pretty slick how a well-written short story can suck you in; before you know it, you're reading a genre that you are sure you don't like. An interesting thing that happened to me as I read this compilation of stories is that I enjoyed stories in genres that I may never have picked up if they had been labeled. As I read these stories to my sixth-grade students, they wanted to get copies of their own. They, too, enjoyed the punch in these stories and the wide variety of styles and genres.

How can you go wrong with a book featuring stories from such authors as Richard Peck, Lloyd Alexander, Washington Irving, Theodore Taylor, and even Avi himself?

If you're looking for a sampler of authors or genres, or a few short stories to read between novels, or something to read without committing to an entire book, or you just feel like something a little different, then try BEST SHORTS on for size. It is one of those one-size-fits-all kind of collections.

Editorial Review:

"Helping others!" Ereth the porcupine snarls viciously. "Being good! It's all broccoli bunk and tick toffee."

On a birthday that he suspects everyone has forgotten, the last thing this grumpy old porcupine wants is to get involved in a sticky fox family predicament. But just as he's about to take a mouthful of his favorite treat, salt, he hears a weak voice calling for help, and his conscience trumps his desire. Soon he's embroiled in his worst nightmare: leaving his comfortable home to act as caretaker of three energetic, chatty, newly motherless fox kits. His longing for his stinky log home next door to his best friend, Poppy the mouse, lessens somewhat as he gets down to the business of keeping the young foxes fed and safe. Meanwhile, another four-legged hunter has his eye on Ereth, and the fox kits' father is nowhere to be found.

Avi has struck gold again with the latest addition the Dimwood Forest series. Hard life lessons and hilarious gems from Ereth's prickly lips ("fish feather fruitcakes!" "puckered peacocks!") mesh to create an entirely engaging story. Fans of Poppy, Poppy and Rye, and Avi's other highly entertaining titles will welcome the chance to meet up with their old furry and spiky friends again. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Struggling to find her love Rye, Poppy (a mouse) has to stop the beavers from making dams. She also has to stop them from turning the beautiful little pond to a big and dirty lake. Rye (a mouse) is trapped inside a dam and cannot get free. So Poppy is not only trying to stop the beavers and set free Rye, Poppy has a wild adventurer with her friend the porcupine, Ereth to tell Ragweed's parents (Rye's brother) is dead. Can Poppy stop the beavers as well as set free Rye and deliver the news? To find out, the call number is AVI and the author and illustrator is Avi and Brian Floca. You need to read this book along with the other great adventures with its series. "Ragweed," "Poppy,' "Poppy and Rye," Ereth's Birthday" and "Poppy's Return." This author has written many great books especially this one. So please, read this book. "Poppy and Rye" is a book for anyone. It has adventure, describing and wow words and many more! Here are some describing and colorful weird words said by Ereth. "Oh, fox flip," the porcupine growled. "Sticky roach toes," Ereth muttered. "Crabgrass up their snoots," Ereth snapped. Avi has a great word choice that makes you picture everything but with words. He really uses his imagination when it comes to writing words. This book I think everyone should read. So please try it!

This was a really good book. I enjoyed it so much, I read it at least thrice and every time I re-read it is still a wonderful book. It gives you a look at the world through a dog's eyes. I think that every dog owner - no make that every pet owner, should read this book. Actually it would be enjoyable to even someone without a pet. Not only is this a great book for kids, but I think adults would even love this book!

Thanks Avi!

A Book Review From a Spiritridge Third Grader 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Do you want an adventurous, dangerous, thrilling story that will make you jump out of your skin? Well, you should read Ragweed, by Avi. Ragweed is about a mouse that lives by a brook and wants to travel from country to country to see the world! He comes along a fork in the road and needs to decide which way to go. Suddenly, a vole bumps into him! Finding himself starting a conversation on which way to go, he discovers that one path leads to a railroad! So he follows it to the railroad and gets on one of the parked trains. After the train ride Ragweed runs top speed to escape a cat! The rest is SECRET until you read the book!

I enjoyed that Ragweed met lots of friends, including extremely unpleasant ones! For example, he meets Silversides and Graybar two unpleasant cats.

Readers who are interested in adventure and who can read thick chapter books should read this book! It is very satisfying!

Editorial Review:

A mouse has to do what a mouse has to do.

Ragweed is determined to see the world. He leaves his family and cozy country home and sets off by train for the big city. What wonders await him: music, excitement, new friends...and cunning, carnivorous cats! Silversides is the purring president of F.E.A.R. (Felines Enraged About Rodents), a group dedicated to keeping cats on top, people in the middle, and mice on the bottom. Can Ragweed and his motley yet musical crew of city nice--Clutch, Dipstick, Lugnut, and Blinker--band together to fight their feline foe?

Ereth's birthday 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Ereth's Birthday is a very cute and good book. I recomend it to people inbetween the ages of 8 & 11. I'm 11 but I still loved it. It's about this porcupine named Ereth and he thinks that his best friend and the mouse he has had a crush on forever forgot his Birthday. Then he decides to go off insearch of his favorite treat. SALT. Although he's a very determined prcupine he gets slowed down by a thick layer of snow. Through out his long journey he learns that he shouldn't think about just himself when his life is threatened. It is funny and sad in a few places but thats what makes it a good book. He makes up odd words like bubbled bat wings and slimy slithering snakes. But I think you should defanately read it.

Editorial Review:

Four novels from one of children's literature's greats--AviĀ—-are collected in a handsome boxed set that his many fans will treasure. The swashbuckling tales of life for the brave rodents and other woodland critters in the Dimwood Forest have an edge-of-seat appeal for readers of all ages. From the high drama of Ragweed, in which adventure-mouse Ragweed hops freight trains, joins a clan of hipster mice, and wages war against evil cats; to the heartbreaking and breathtaking saga of Ragweed's plucky sweetheart in Poppy; to the poignant tale of progress gone bad in Poppy and Rye; to the entertaining expletives of a porcupine foster pop to fox pups in Ereth's Birthday, Avi's stories are persistently engaging. Illustrator Brian Floca's mouse-eye perspectives and dastardly depictions of the villainous cats, owls, and beavers add loads of drama to this terrific series. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter
