Great early childrens book with colorful and simple illustrations 5 out of 5 stars.

Byron Barton has created another great children's book with colorful illustrations and simple text. The rhythm of the text makes this book clever and musical. It was a fovorite of my son for several years. I now purchase this book for other children and a shower gift for expecting parents. As a sppech language pathologist, I want to foster the child's love of communication through words ans illustrations.

We love this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is great to prepare for a trip on an airplane. We were getting ready to move to Australia and this book along with the "Shae by Air" DVD made a huge difference for us with our 2 & 3 year old boys.
Now that we are settled abroad, we just went on a short flight and brought the book with us to the airport-- they could not believe they were actually in the airport while looking at the pictures in the book of the check in counter, security line, and waiting area-- it was great!

Toddler son loves this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Our son is 27 months old, and loves this book. As soon as I finish reading it, he wants to read it again. I think it would be great preparation for a toddler's first airplane flight.

Great book for little first time flyers!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I read this book to my 2 1/2 yr old son over and over again in preperation for his first airplane trip. He loved all of the sounds that the airplane made on our trip and wasn't scared or startled at all by the loud engines etc. I highly recommend this book for little first time flyers.

Editorial Review:

From the excitement of arrival to the wonder of taking off -- a picture book that captures in joyous and powerful images all the magic of an airport.

My son has had this book since he was two and it was his favorite until he discovered longer stories. He had memorized most of this book. The pictures are bright and lovely, and the sequence is perfect. Highly recommend this for a toddler!

Unhappy with this purchase! 1 out of 5 stars.

I actually returned this book because I bought it new and when I received it the front cover was all scratched like it had been used. I had also purchased another book. It was used, but it was in better shape than the new one. I was very disappointed and returned the book.

A great little book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this for my friend's two year old son, and she says he loves it. Requests to have it read to him often. I looked at the book before I sent it, it seemed pretty sturdy and was colorful. It shows a few different kinds of airplanes, with a main focus on the passenger airplane and the airport.

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

When my son was 2, he could not get enough of this book - he asked for it every day and even carried it with him in the car. Of the many truck books for young boys, this one is especially appealing for a few reasons:
-Simple, bold illustrations are easy to look at.
-Just one sentence per page makes the book great for short attention spans.
-In very simple language, the book introduces different kinds of trucks and their purpose. (Oil truck, bucket truck, cement mixer, etc.)

Besides appealing to toddlers, I think this would be an excellent choice for boys who are beginning to read on their own.

Editorial Review:

The tow trucks, cement trucks, and newspaper delivery trucks pictured here all help people and will fascinate small children. This very simple picture book about transportation 'will delight the youngest, and have enough meat for older preschoolers and beginning readers.' -- K.

Not as good as other Barton books 3 out of 5 stars.

This story was kind of boring, not as melodic as some of the other books (Cars is our favorite) but kind of cute. Graphics are somewhat boring too (compared to the others)

Good Book... 5 out of 5 stars.

My son loved this book from the time he was about 15 months old. The words and the illustrations are simple and catchy. I'm not sure if this one comes in paperback but I highly suggest getting all of the Barton books in the board book style. They are sure to be read over and over!!

Surprise Hit 4 out of 5 stars.

Byron Barton's Trains has become an unlikely favorite for our 2-year old. I say unlikely because it's so different from what most of his favorites (which are heavy on Sandra Boynton, Jez Alborogh, and the Spot series) are like. The art is extremely simple, using lots of bold colors, and the story doesn't rhyme or feature any noticeable repetition. It's not really even a story at all, but rather a descriptive sentence on each page highlighting the kind of train or activity shown.

I don't know whether it's the bold colors or just the subject matter (my son is absolutely fascinated by all kinds of vehicles), but this little board book went straight into his bedtime "top 5" and shows no sign of leaving! I may not get it, but I'm confident enough after seeing my son's reaction to this book to recommend Trains to the parents of any toddler interested in trains.

Editorial Review:

Byron Barton introduces young readers to the excitement of trains in this bold and colorful book. All aboard as the train journeys through a town, past workers repairing a rail and into the station.

Simplicity is its strong suit! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

When I first got this for my son (2 years), I thought "What a snooze-fest!" We were still high on the Mo Willems wave, still in love with Knuffle Bunny and the slightly off-kilter viewpoint of the Pigeon, so the utter barrenness and simplicity of Machines at Work honestly put me off. But, as it is all about the baby (and don't he know it!), Connor simply loves it! Although he is fickle (we have now moved on to the pop-up Bug series by David A. Carter) it firmly held the New Boy Times #1 bedseller slot for a good 3 weeks (an eternity to the toddler set). It also was known to douse many a tantrum (great diversion - "I know you just ka-bonked your head on the dining room table for the fortieth time today, but LOOK AT THESE COOL TRUCKS!") and entertain on long car rides.

The story (as it is) involves a diverse work crew doing stuff with simple 4-5 word narration for each page. It is so simple, it is almost zen-like. And Connor came to be able to repeat each phrase as we turned the page - as soon as I opened the cover he would gleefully shoud out "Hey, you guys!". Reading this to him at bedtime has become one of the fondest memories of my fatherhood experience, and hopefully one of my son's funnest moments.

Editorial Review:

"Hey, you guys! Let's get to work." At the construction site, the workers gather. Their machines are ready and waiting. A busy day is about to begin. Rhythmic text and bold, graphic illustrations convey all the energy and excitement of the day.

Often requested 4 out of 5 stars.

My kids love this book. They ask for it (and other Barton books) to be read over and over. The pictures are simple and appealing. Byron Barton is definitely on to something. Get this with My Car -- both are especially appealing to infants and toddlers.

Little disappointed 3 out of 5 stars.

This book had some great pictures and gave good information about what happens when you build a house.

I must say that I was disappointed in the incredibly short sentences. I should have known it would be like that considering the author, but I guess I thought the subject was a little more advanced so maybe the language would be too. Nope.

Excellent book for preschool and toddlers 5 out of 5 stars.

When I saw this book only had an average of 3.5 stars, I had to write my own review. My two boys LOVE this book. One is 5 years old, with mild autism, and the other is a highly gifted [...]. The text IS simple, and short, but the pictures allow for plenty of exploration and explanation. We talked about all the different people involved in building a house, the family moving in when it was complete, etc.... In my mind, this is an excellent book for sharing. Parents can expand on the simple text as they see appropriate.

Editorial Review:

A machine digs a big hole. A cement mixer pours cement. Carpenters put up walls. Bricklayers, electricians, plumbers, and painters do their part. Through brilliantly simple words and pictures we follow each step, and before our eyes a house is built.

Editorial Review:

Sam may be a man of few words, but he is certainly eloquent on the subject of his car. With a bright, bold palette of mostly primary colors, author-illustrator Byron Barton (Trucks, Planes, Machines at Work, etc.) deftly depicts the fondness Sam has for his chunky little car and the care with which he treats it. "I love my car. / I keep my car clean. / My car needs oil / and a full tank of gasoline." Sam also describes the parts of his car, how to drive carefully, and where he likes to go in his car. The story concludes with a twist, sure to delight already rapt readers.

Sam and his acquaintances are unusual-looking, blocky figures, with big black blobs for eyes, and more blobs for nose and mouth. Characters and objects are reminiscent of the cars, signs, and figures in a child's play station. Small details are appealing: the mechanic is a woman, and the car's headlights bathe a portion of the text in yellow. This should be required reading for every driver's ed student; we can only hope that the repeated readings this book is bound to receive will sink in to preschoolers' minds for future recall: "I obey the laws. / I stop for pedestrians. / I read the signs." This is a lovely picture book. (Ages 2 to 5) --Emilie Coulter

All aboard Barton's "Boats" 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

"Boats," by Byron Barton, is a good book for beginning readers. Like others by this author, the book combines simple text with illustrations in Barton's trademark style: bright, solid colors and simplified, almost iconic figures.

Barton depicts a rowboat, sailboat, fire department boat, ferry, cruise ship, and other vessels. The boats are actually shown in action. A nice touch is that the passengers and crew are people of different colors and ethnic appearances. Sample text: "There goes a fishing boat out to sea." A colorful and educational book.

Bright colors and big pictures 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I suggest Amazon.com to reconsider their age rating for this book. Toddler to 3 years might be more approriate. This being said however, my toddler boy loves this book. He goes wild over the bright colors and big bright pictures. The great thing is that the book introduces one new boat per page while keeping the previous boat displayed in the background. This way the child is able to see what happens to the other boat while being introduced to a new one. The Text is easy and plain "here comes a rowing boat" style, leaving plenty of room to create ones own stories.
I recommend this book for small children.

My son's favorite! 5 out of 5 stars.

This has been my son's favorite book since he was about 8 months old. I was suprised how well he took to it as such an early age. He is now almost 14 months and still can't get enough of it. It is the one book he will look around for and really insist on having at his high chair during meal times. Agree completely with the other reviewers who mentioned how fun it was to make the dinosaur noises and that the "long sharp claws, long sharp teeth" part is especially fascinating for the child. Even when i don't have the book handy, just by saying the opening lines...a long time ago...there were DINOSAURS -- brings a delighted smile to his face every time.

He also enjoys "My Car" by the same author although that book is not as simple (i.e., talks about car needing oil change, obeying traffic laws, etc.).
